Poultry Contests
Honor Progress
The grassroots, on-the-farm phases of Georgia's biggest agribusiness were spotlighted and saluted recently by new annual Georgia Poultry Federation contests to find and recognize the best among the thousands of Georgia's broiler growers and egg producers.
Monty Holland, of Forsyth County. was named early this year as
iGeorgia's Broiler [Grower of the Yelar for 1977, and [Charles M. Jackjson, of Morgan j County, recently [received his Fedleration award I from Governor " George Busbee as the state's 1977 Commercial Egg Producer of the Year.
(Our guest columnist this week is George
Bagley, President, Georgia Poultry Fed-
eration, P. 0. Box 763, Gainesville, 30501.)
As Governor Busbee said in presenting their awards, these men typify the skill and dedication of the thousands of farm men and women from all over Georgia. These are the individuals who are playing such a tremendous part in making Georgia the nation's number one state in total farm-level income from chickens and eggs, and are the base of our state's overall agricultural heritage and progress.
The Georgia poultry industry is now producing and processing everyday approximately 5 million pounds of chicken and 15 million eggs. In 1977 Georgia produced 485,879.000 broilers and 5.535,000,000 eggs.
Mr. Holland learned his trade on the farm of his father, and in 1956, began his own full-time broiler growing operation. Today, his four broiler houses produce some 200,000 birds yearly, a task that takes up an average of three to five hours of the Holland family's time seven days a week, 365 days a year.
Mr. Holland's formula for success as a broiler grower, "not letting your birds go lacking for anything you can possibly provide," sums up the Georgia farmer's hereditary experience and concern in animal husbandry that Federation officials

Fall Farmland Disaster Loan Reorganization

Edition Coming

Now Provides Swifter Service
The Farmers Home Administration (FmHA) now has authority to make

emergency loans to farmers as soon as loss from natural disaster is con-

firmed, Commissioner of Agriculture, Tommy Irvin has announced. In the

Crop Switches Offset Losses

The abolished time-consuming system first required county governments and state governors to re-
quest disaster loan service. At this point the Secretary of Agriculture would then designate which coun-

realtors, brokers or dealers are allowed to advertise in this edition, only individual farm owners wishing to sell their personal property for their own use. A 35 word limit will be enforced.
All farms should consist of five or more acres unless there is a farm operation currently existing there such as chicken houses or hog parlors. No subdivision property will be allowed.

An unusually good peanut crop with an expected yield of some 3,330 Ibs. per acre, coupled with a high quality tobacco yield of more than 2,000 Ibs. per acre will help to offset this years early summer drought damage, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
Drought effects would probably have been more severe if there had not been an even greater switch from corn to soybeans this year, Irvin said. Corn acreage in Georgia dropped 540,000 acres, while soy-

ties would receive FmHA emergency loans.
Under the new, less time-consuming procedure, state directors of FmHA may authorize the agency's county offices to make emergency loans to any number of farmers showing a need for emergency credit to offset substantial loss caused by storm, flood, drought or other natural disaster. State directors will

bean acreage increased by a half million acres.
Corn yields this year are expected to average about 50 bu. per acre as compared to only 24 bu. surviving the 1977 drought, and soybean yields are expected to average 22

In Permit Violations
A north Georgia cattle trader has been found guilty of violating federal regulations and interstate movement of cattle. Phillip Da vis, Ringgold, was convicted for moving cattle

Agriculture requires that all cattle

Frank Strickland, of Lanier County, has been elected Director of the Flue-Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Cooperation for District 2.
The election was held August 30, at the Ware County Courthouse in Waycross to fill the unexpired term of Jack Massey who died in May.
District 2 of the Cooperative includes all tobacco growing counties in Georgia and Alabama. Ninety two voting members of the cooperative

(Editor's note: Last year when we started publishing I

stockdogs in the MARKET BULLETIN, we were concerned |

that only those dogs which were strictly used to work on i

the farm be advertised. In an effort to maintain the column j

for the purpose it was originally intended, we asked the !

Mid-South Stockdog Association for its opinion of what is j

astockdog.)

j

"... The breed of stockdogs are as follows: Aus- j

tralian Shepherds [Aussie], Border Collies, Blue {

Heelers, English Shepherds, Kelpies, and Catahoula j

Leopard dogs. All of the bulldogs are catch dogs. I

They are dangerous to use to both the handler and the !

stock.

j

Now these are the most widely used breeds of j

stockdogs. Any dog, including a mutt, will work if j

trained properly, but a dog of this type is extremely !

rare.

j

Such dogs as Collie, German Shepherd, Great Dane j

and Malamute were derived from working stockdogs. j

However, the working ability of these dogs has been !

bred out of them through the years. . . "

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
AT STUD
At Stud notices will be published in the BULLETIN four times a year, in January, April, July and October. Word limit for these ads is 35 words which must also include the advertisers' name and address. Next issue will be October 4, deadline September 27.

Be sure to check how many pounds are in the bale of hay before you buy. Weights fluctuate considerably as there is no state or federal standard weight for hay. Advertisers are urged to include poundage of bale in their ad. Another alternative is to buy hay by the ton.

able or leathery. Store in airtight containers.
Dried apples may be eaten as is for a quick snack. They can also be rehydrated by boiling them in water for one minute and then allowing them to stand for one hour. Use the rehydrated apples as you would canned or frozen apple slices.
Lend flavor to your meals with fresh Georgia Apples. Eaten raw, apples make a great low-calorie snack or dessert and a medium size apple contains only 70 calories.
Versatile Georgia Apples make a plain meal special when served as part of the main course, in salads, breads or desserts.
Apples contain a number of important nutrients such as carbohydrates and vitamins A and C. Often called "Nature's Toothbrush", apples also provide fiber for the proper functioning of the body's digestive and regulatory systems.
For these reasons, and because of their universal flavor appeal, versatility and convenience, nutritionists rate them high on any list for "eating right and staying fit."
Georgia apples will be available through fall. Take advantage of this Georgia commodity at roadside stands, state farmers' markets, local groceries and at area orchards.

bu. per acre, however, corn acreage lost to dry weather may total more than 200,000 acres.
Pasture and hay crops which were damaged severely during the early part of the summer have recovered with increased rainfall and an anticipated yield of some two tons of hay to the acre is expected from 475,000 acres.
This year's cotton crop is the smallest on record, with just 150,000 acres planted but a yield of 443 Ibs. per acre is indicated compared with a yield of only 232 Ibs. per acre last year.
Go Corduroy
Extension Service clothing specialists are recommending corduroy for school wear this year. They say its natural, rugged appearance makes the fabric very fashionable.

Farm land notices are divided into six sections, northwest, northeast, west central, east central, southeast and southwest. If you are looking for land in a particular area of the state, locate the county on the map to determine the section under which the land would be listed.

Poultry Contests
(Continued From Page 1)
believe to be a basic factor in
Georgia's poultry progress. Mr. Jackson's two 300 by 30-foot
cage-type layer houses are home to some 34,000 hens; producing some 24,000 eggs daily and requiring some five to six hours of attention from the Jackson family every day of the year - more on clean-up days.
His selection to become the state's first Commercial Egg Producer of the Year is highlighted by the fact that he has been in the poultry business only since September of 1976. He, too, stresses close atten tion to the needs of the flock as the key to success in commercial egg production.
Those who nominated and judged him in the contest cited his initiative, his sense of responsibility and his adoption of and strict adherence to good management practices.
As the statewide trade association for all elements of Georgia's poultry industry, the Georgia Poultry Federation is grateful to these men and the thousands like them throughout the state.
We will soon begin the search for Georgia's Broiler Grower and Commercial Egg Producer of the Year for 1978, and plan to add the selection of Outstanding Hatching Egg Producer. AH of these are important to Georgia's billion dollar poultry industry.

Disaster Loans
(Continued From Page 1)
act on the basis of available information including damage reports received from FmHA county offices.
FmHA emergency loans can be made to farmers lacking other sources of credit for recovery from natural disaster. Beginning October 1, 1978, amounts offsetting actual loss associated with production will be made at an interest rate of 5 percent, and additional amounts at higher rates. Low-rate loans also are made to restore farm dwellings lost or damaged due to natural disaster, Irvinsaid.
FmHA emergency loan services also are automatically available where a major disaster or emergency has been declared by the President, the Commissioner added.
$500 RICHER
Seven delegates to the Georgia 4H Congress in Atlanta last week went home $500 richer. The Atlanta Journal awarded $500 college scholarships to Cindy Baldwin, Route 1, Lumpkin; Tina Conley, Siloam; Cathy Ann Cox, Blue Ridge; Diane Ferguson, Sautee-Nacoochee; Crystal Fleming, Route 1, Crawford; Cynthia Jackson, Collins; and Sara Collins, Route2, Lexington.
SHOPPING TIP
Smart shoppers make a grocery list before going to the supermarket. The practice will prevent "impulse" buying, according to Cooperative Extension Service specialists. They also suggest comparing items that are similar in size, quality and price. Leaving the kids at home, and shopping when you are not hungry, also help keep the food bill down.

Colorful, Versatile, Pansy No Stranger to Gardeners

Growing flowers is a favorite pasttime as well as hobby for many Georgians. As a hardy biennial with a wide range of colors, markings and sizes,
the pansy is one of the most popular garden flowers in the state and now is the time to begin planting.

The ideal temperature range for pansies is about 40 degrees Fahrenheit at night, to about 60 degrees during the day. These plants produce their best flowers in the spring when the weather is mild.

such as peat moss, leaf mold and pine bark.
Place three to four inches of either material on the surface of the bed and work it in to a depth of six to eight inches. One to two inches of well decomposed stable manure is also very beneficial.
Apply about one inch of water once a week during the growing season, but do not water in the late afternoon or evenings. Watering at this point during the day only encourages disease development.

Pansies should be placed where they will receive full sun or partial shade. Many new breeds thrive in full sunlight as too much shade reducesJlower numbers and size.
Seeds should be planted in late summer, and spaced 7 to 12 inches
apart. If seedlings are purchased,
they should be set out about six weeks before the first killing frosts.
Short, stocky seedlings should be
chosen, with four or five strong
leaves at a minimum. One of the keys to successful
pansy culture is good soil preparation before planting. Pansies grow poorly in heavy, compact soil or in
extremely sandy soil, even when fertilized properly.
Organic matter added to any soil will enhance root growth and a variety of materials may be used

After transplanting seedlings tc their permanent location, they need to be watered only after dry periods and when they are fertilized. Ir> addition to watering, use a mulch around the young plants to conserve soil moisture.
For fertilizer, use a general pur pose brand such as 8-8-8 or 10-10-lC analyses. An average rate is a levei teaspoonful per square foot of pansy bed.
Apply the fertilizer about a wee! after fall transplanting, once more in late fall or early winter and agair in March. Do not use excessively high levels of nitrogen as this wil cause the plants to produce soft foli age and to rot.
To encourage more blooms, re move the flowers that are fading This prevents seed pods from form ing and extends the flowering period. Next, get ready for a garder full of bright colors!

GET A SCOOP
An ice cream scoop comes in mighty handy around the house and not just for removing rock hard ice cream from its carton. It also shapes the ice cream into attractive balls for serving. Extension Service home economists say you can also use the scoop when you want to make even portions for salads, mashed potatoes or sandwich fillings.

Agricultural seed and plants
for sale
All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. All agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition. All agricultural seed and plants must be produced by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale.
Blueberry plants which are advertised as 1 to 2 year old plants are on the average 8 to 12 inches tall. Horticulturists advise us that it takes an average of 3 more years before the blueberry plant will produce enough blueberries to make a pie. A frequent complaint these days is that home appliances aren't built as well as they used to be. Doris Oglesby, housing and equipment specialist with the Georgia Extension Service, doesn't buy that. "They don't always look as sturdy as old models, but many of today's products are better," she says. "They do more things, have more style and go through more sophisticated testing; and many more families own them."

Many homemakers wonder if they can substitute honey for sugar in cakes. As a rule,
says Linda Wall, food and nutrition specialist with the Extension Service, honey can
be substituted for only part of the sugar. She says this would be especially true when making cakes which require creaming sugar and shortening . She suggests using only

THE MARKET BULLETIN
QQ consumer line.
I have just had an unpleasant experience opening my soft drink bottle. There was a cigarette lighter sitting in the bottom.
S.Y. Atlanta That certainly does sound unappetizing. Please bring the bottle and lighter to our office. We will notify the bottling company of the situation and take any corrective action that may be required.

In early autumn beautiful crocuslike flowers burst into bloom. Although the flowers are short-lived, more and more blooms keep opening so that for several weeks a clump of autumn crocus is a beautiful sight.
The name autumn crocus is used because of the flowers' similar appearance to the low-growing spring blooming plant. However, colchicums (as they are correctly known) are really members of the lily family. The flowers have six stamens - crocus haveoniy three.
Most colchicums are rosy - lavender but there are two varieties of white. The flowers bloom without the benefit of any foliage so they should be planted near other foliage plants, such as hosta, periwinkle or pachysandra. The foliage appears in early summer - pretty lush green large leaves - but they soon turn yellow and are unsightly.
Cutting the foliage, however, will result in less flowers come fall. If planted near other green ground cover, the leaves can be pressed down and covered with other plant foliage.
Since fall flowering plants are less numerous than spring and summer availabilities, coichicums provide a welcome addition to the fall landscape.
Go. Peanut Festival
Set for September
The 15th Annual Georgia Peanut Festival is scheduled for September 28 through October 1 in Sylvester. Events include a gospei singing and dance, a "Battle of High School Bands" competition, a crafts exhibit and a farm equipment display. For further information, contact the festival committee at 912/776-5426 or 432-0988.
Horse Management
Offered at DeKalb
Beginning September 16, at 11:00 a.m., the Central Campus of DeKalb Community College will offer Horse Management I and II. The courses are part of an informal enrichment program which will include lectures and field trips to breeding farms, training centers, and stables. Interested individuals should contact Mrs. Evans at 404/466-8788, or Mr. McPherson at 404/296-4400.

I planted a sample of the seeds I bought out of state recently and only a handful came up. Can you run a test for me?
R.T. Carrollton Yes, we'd be happy to run a germination test for you. You will need to send us at least 400 seed. All seeds sold in Georgia must bear a testing date not older than nine months for your protection in purchasing seed.

I am being infested with fleas in my apartment and need HELP. F.T.
Macon There are several steps in the battle plan. You will need to treat your pet, if you have one, your home and possibly the yard area surrounding your apartment. You may use sevin outside and indoors a solution containing 0.5 percent diazinon or 5 percent malathion. Repeated applications will be required as the new eggs hatch. Be persistent and follow precautions included in the brochure attached and on the insecticide labels.
****
Why won't the store where I shop sell me a half dozen eggs? It's no trouble and I think they should be forced to comply with a reasonable request.
B.C. Macon If the eggs are packaged in a carton of a dozen, they should not be broken into smaller units unless the required information is printed on each section. The regulations regarding this practice were written to protect you.
****
Will the herbicide I use to kill locust trees in my yard harm my grass? P.T.
Savannah Yes, it will kill the trees and the grass. Make spot applications being sure to read the label directions.

1 bought a can of beans that tasted unusual. Can you tell me what the pro-

blem was?

M.G.

Cairo

Yes, we can check the product for you and give you an unofficial test re-

sult. If you will send us the complete label information, we may run an offi-

cial test on an unopened sample. We will be happy to send you the results of

both tests.

Should I remove the crabgrass in my front lawn or let it die before planting fescue?
R. S. Gainesville It would be advisable to get rid of the crab grass. Now is a good tune to broadcast the fescue.
