Global Goals
For Agriculture
Today, the expansion of agricultural industry must be thought of in terms of global agriculture or geoagriculture, rather than on a local or regional basis. Agriculture is entering the mainstream of global economic life.
Expansion of agriculture today centers around successful compe-
tition dealing with specific crop production, distribution, and marketing. More companies and cooperatives are performing all three of these functions in order to successfully compete. Expansion of agricultural .industry must utilize this same tool, keeping in mind that it must be on a global basis rather than local or regional.
(Our guest columnist this week is L. Ed-
ward White, Director, Rural Development
Center, ABAC, Tifton, 31794.)_
Another key to ihe expansion of agricultural industry is manpower. Regular working hours for agricultural workers and shifts of employees on an eight-hour basis similar to plant and factory workers will be a key issue for the production phase of agriculture industry.
Research will continue to play a role in the expansion of agricultural industry. Research is needed to reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers, to perfect solar drying of grain, to create usable energy on the farm, to improve and introduce new crops, and more efficient use of all resources.
American agriculture today, as never before, is highly dependent on international markets. Roughly onefourth of the cash receipts of American farmers come from exports. Most of the recent expansion in agriculture has been based on the assumption that agricultural exports will continue strong. Exports now require 100 million harvested acres in the U.S.
Our world is headed toward marketing internationalism. We need to move into the mainstream of global agriculture if we are to expand agricultural industry.

Hog Producers Alerted

Approved For
Just when hog cholera has been conquered, another equally deadly swine
disease looms on the horizon. African Swine Fever has been confirmed in the Dominican Republic and threatens to move northward to the United
Feed Program Helps
Farmers Fight Loss
Georgia livestock farmers hard hit by summer drought during the last two years have thus far received more than $11 million in federal aid under provisions of the emergency livestock feed program, according to State Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin.
Irvin added there will probably be more funds forthcoming for a number of farmers who have had their applications approved, but who have not yet received assistance.
Figures released concerning the program indicate that during a

The deadly disease was first diagnosed in Africa in the 1930's. It later invaded southern Europe. In 1971 African Swine Fever entered Cuba and resulted in the loss of over onethird of that country's swine before it was eradicated.
With the new outbreak in the Dominican Republic, U.S.D.A. and state officials are on the alert for any suspicious swine illness which could be African Swine Fever. The symptoms of ASF closely resemble those of hog cholera: high temperature, weakness, tendency to huddle together as if cold, red blotches on the skin, higher than usual death loss and little or no response to antibiotics.
There is no vaccine for this disease. The only effective way to prevent ASF from spreading is to find cases early and eradicate the

Ga. Peanuts
A build-up of Army worms and other threatening insects has resulted in Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin's approving the use of Lorsban 4E on Georgia's peanut crop.
Irvin's action in declaring a crisis exemption under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act will allow use of the pesticide to replace similar products that are in short supply or no longer effective against insect threats.
Lorsban 4E is currently registered for use on cotton and peaches but the Commissioner has authority to expand its usage for crops such as peanuts to protect against Armyworms, cutworms, corn ear worms and mites.
The chemical may be applied by growers and or commercial applicators at recommended application rates. One application is expected to give control in most cases.
Georgia Dairy Goats Pay For Their Keep
Up until just recently, many Georgians envisioned the dairy goat as an offensive, smelly creature standing on top of a rusted, abandoned automobile dining on an old tin can. Georgia now has hundreds of goats and that impression is rapidly giving way to a new image.
Many regions in the U.S. are experiencing a "back to the land" movement by ecologically minded professional individuals and urban dwellers and Georgia is no exception. More people are buying dairy
goats and other livestock which are relatively clean, require a minimum
of living space and help cut soaring grocery bills.
As populations expand and there is more competition for land areas,
dairy goat numbers may increase even further. The animals are ideal
for the small rural dweller who works in the city and lives in the country.
Dairy goats can provide an abun-
dance of wholesome milk and milk products. Two good goats can
supply a family with three to five quarts of milk a day for much less money than is required to keep a cow.
Even more pleasant is the fart that dairy goats are highly companionable and make excellent pets. Gone are the days when the goat's smelly scent made them undesirable. Now, through a simple debudding process, scent glands may be easily removed, eliminating all offensive odors.
(Continued On Page 11)
Georgia dairy goat numbers are increasing steadily across the state. Mrs. H. Garland Head, president of the Georgia Dairy Goat Breeders, Inc., has a herd of registered Nubians which she is breeding for their spotted coats as well as conformation and milk production. Mrs. Head holds in her right and left hands, "Bambi", who
was Grand Champion at the South Carolina Dairy Goat Show, and "Pretty", who placed second in the 3 to 5year-old milkers in the event. Nubians are known as desert goats and thus are an "ears down" variety, in order to protect against desert sands and other irritants.

Dear Editor: In several issues of the MARKET BULLETIN you have
featured articles about various breeds of horses found in this state. I represent the owners of one of the rarest breeds of horse found in the entire world, the prehistoric Tarpan horse.
There are only about 100 of these unusual horses in the world with only about 45 in the U. S. Georgia has one of the largest populations with 12 registered Tarpan horses.
Tarpans stand about 13 hands tall. The mane is semi-erect. The horse has a large head, massive jaws and a very thick neck. They have a calm disposition, are very intelligent, affectionate, but very stubborn.
On September 9, nine of the twelve Tarpans in the state will be shown at the Blazing Saddles Club Horse Show in Bamesville. It will be the First Annual Georgia Tarpan Classic.
Ellen J. Thrall American Tarpan Studbook Assn. Route6, Box 429 Griffin, Georgia 30223.
If roses won't grow for you, scatter a few cantaloupe seeds and stand back! Mrs. R. E. Alt man, Jr. of Tucker threw a few seeds into her wilting rose beds and this 23 3/4 x 26 1/4 inch monster was the end result.
Editor's note: We thought the craft of making bread trays was a lost art but we have heard from another Georgian who has been sculpturing trays for forty years. Mr. Ted Ivey, Rt. 1, Box 33, Jesup 31545 says he has made trays for homes from St. Simons to San Francisco ranging in size from eight to twenty-four inches long.

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. Hie MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

- All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. All agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition. All agricultural seed and plants must be produced by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale.
Blueberry plants which are advertised as 1 to 2 year old plants are on the average 8 to 12 inches tall. Horticulturists advise us that it takes an average of 3 more years before the blueberry plant will produce enough blueberries to make a pie. There will be a few berries the first year on the small rooted cutting.

Dairy Goats
(Continued From Page 1}
Not only is goat's milk very high in minerals, but it comes from the goat virtually homogenized. Bacteria count in the milk is extremely low since goats generally are very clean animals, .and the milk is highly valued by individuals in a weakened physical state as it is easily digested.
According to Mrs. H. Garland Head, president of the Georgia Dairy Goat Breeders, Inc., Georgia is rapidly developing an export market in dairy goats. Countries such as Mexico, Venezuela, and Brazil are increasingly buying from owners of pure-bred stock here in Georgia for use in upgrading milk production in their native stock.
Mrs. Head explained that goats are worth their weight in gold in clearing thick growths of unwanted poison ivy, briars, kudzu, honeysuckle or weeds. This not only wages war on unwanted undergrowth, but indirectly destroys covers for snakes and other undesirable denizens.
The first importations of goats into the U.S. came from Switzerland. Records of early settlements in Virginia and New England indicate that milk goats were brought to the U.S. by Captain John Smith and Lord Delaware.
Breeds of dairy goats found in Georgia include the Saanen, Toggenburg, Nubian, Alpine, and French Alpine. Individuals interested in buying dairy goats should buy from herds which have official milk records in order to ascertain that a quality animal is being selected.
Two goats should stay clean and healthy on one half acre of land, provided they are fed grain and hay and given a dry draft-free enclosure : in which to sleep. Keep in mind also that these animals must be milked daily.
As a 4-H or youth project, dairy goats are ideal. They are interesting and like attention, are not expensive to buy or feed, are easily handled and transported, and are fun to show at fairs. For further information, contact Mrs. Head at 404/4754500.

Make A Cheerful Quilt
To Brighten Dreary Days
Although the patchwork flower quilt is not too old, it has a surprising popularity for its youth. Just the looks of it are cheerful and bright and making it is easy. Use a bright yellow print for the border and a light color for background. Make centers yellow and leaves green. Use bias tape for the stem to make the quilt even easier.
Grandpa's
Garden
Page 11
Picking a ripe watermelon is not the easiest of jobs. Mark Twain found that a green watermelon says "pink" or "pank" and a ripe watermelon says "punk" when thumped with the knuckles. To pick a ripe cantaloupe, press lightly on the stem ends with thumbs. If the stem end gives a little and if the melon has a "ripe" smell then it's ready to enjoy.
To test a container grown plant for moisture, push a wooden toothpick into the soil and pull it out. If soil clings to the pick, no water is needed. If it comes out clean, add water.
If you have a black walnut tree in your yard and wonder why nothing will grow near it, the reason is that the roots secrete a substance toxic to other plants. Your best bet is to lightly mulch the ground around the tree with pine straw and save your gardening efforts for other areas in the yard.
Fall vegetable gardens must contend with an increase in insect pests. So extra effort must be made to fight the critters at the onset. To trap aphids fill a yellow dishpan (they are strongly attracted to this color for some reason.) 3/4 full of water and set in the middle of the garden. Aphids will flock to the water by droves, land on the water
and can't get out.
Each block is 11 by 13 inches. Sashing is added after all blocks have been finished. Place stem on background square about 1/2 inch from bottom edge. Position the two leaves on either side with ends tucked under the
stem. Place the petals over the stem, overlapping each petal on the one before
it. Place the (a) unit on top. Baste hi place then sew by hand or machine. Outline all seams with black embroidery thread if desired.
Feed Program
(Continued From Page 1)
period from last October through July 31 of this year, 7,378 requests have been approved with actual financial assistance provided 6,998 Georgia farmers.
Commissioner Irvin pointed out that the feed assistance program represents more than 585,000 pounds across the state.
Farmers may be reimbursed up to 50 percent of the cost for replacement feed purchased during an emergency period as long as it does not exceed two cents per pound in terms of feed grain equivalent.
Clean Greenhouse
Many hobby greenhouse owners put their plants outdoors for the summer. That's a good time to remove empty pots and flats, wash the walls, scrub the benches with a disinfectant, and clean all the trash off the floor.
FULL FIGURE?
Ladies with full figures often find it difficult to shop for clothes. Carolyn Ashley of the Cooperative Extension Service says the larger woman should select clothing that flatters her figure and portrays a positive self-image. Strive for a low-keyed look, and avoid trying to make a dramatic statement with your clothes, she advises. In other words, dress simply. * * * *
WATERING TIP
When it comes to watering flower beds, a canvas soaker hose is an excellent way to do it. Doug Crater, Extension Service horticulturist, says sprinklers wet the flowers and foliage, and this makes them susceptible to diseases. Also, the soil may puddle or crust over, thus keeping the water from soaking into the bed when a sprinkler is used.
We have received many requests for oldtimey garden hints. While most of these methods have not been 'research-tested' they have withstood the test of time. If you have hints to share with our readers, please let us know.

Will tomatoes and other vegetables spoil if you wash them before you put them in the refrigerator?
S. T. Toccoa No, vegetables will not spoil from washing. In fact, you should clean them before storing in your refrigerator.
One of the nicest things about fall is the expectation of chrysanthemums. When everything else is dying back to the ground and the leaves start to fall, chrysanthemums brighten up the landscape and provide cut flowers for the house.
Depending on the variety, chrysanthemums bloom from August through November. There are dwarf bedding mums, single, double and spider mums and of course the essential 'football mum' which is a corsage in itself.
The name chrysanthemum is a literal translation of the common and genus name as found in the Greek language 'chryos' meaning gold and 'anthemom' which means flower.
Chrysanthemums were introduced to the United States less than fifty years ago. They have been popular in China since before 550 B.C. where
they are native. Mums do well in good garden soil
enriched with organic material and a flower garden fertilizer. Mulching is
recommended to keep the plants from drying out.
Pinching back tender growth makes for compact, full, bushy plants. However, this practice should be discontinued after July as flower buds start to form and instead of pinching back the plant you are pinching out the flower.
Great Farm Show
Coming to Georgia
The Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition in Moultrie, October 10-12 will provide the ultimate opportunity for farmers and consumers in Georgia. Those individuals attending will be able to observe firsthand, some of the latest technological innovations and advances in the agriculture industry.
Billed as the largest farm show ever held in the Southeast, the exposition hopes to draw over 100,000 visitors and participants including agri-business from all over the rich Southeast area.
The Exposition site at Spence Field is composed of 1680 acres, of which 400 will devoted to irrigated crops used for harvesting and tillage demonstrations and 60 acres for the main exhibit area.
Ample acreage has been assessed for overnight campsites, free parking, and a FAA controlled, 9000' hard surface runway for aircraft attendance. For further information or assistance, please contact the Sunbelt Committee, at P. O. Box 1209, Tifton, Georgia, 31794 or phone 912/386-3397.
About a year and a half ago I bought a largo order of treated fence posts and now they are rotting. Is there anything that can be done?
Z. W. Barnesville
Action has already been taken, but too late for you to benefit. The company which processed your posts is no longer allowed to sell them in the state of Georgia. However, according to the law our jurisdiction ends after the sale has been made. The business is still in operation and you may con-
tact them to convey your dissatisfaction. Currently they are selling in other
states.
Can you tell me what these little bugs are? I found them in my yard?
G.Y.
Vienna
Yes, they are mole crickets and we have sent you some literature on their
control.
****
Early this year, I placed a large order with an out-of-state nursery company for some shrubbery. I have yet to hear from them and have contacted every known agency to no avail.
R. B. Columbus You have certainly made a thorough search of state and federal offices. We will check into the matter for you and see if additional assistance may
be offered. Unfortunately, many of these operations are quite familiar with the limitations provided by the law and profit from this knowledge.
Regulatory agencies may revoke their license, but often cannot force the company to return the buyer's money. When making any order, please keep
a careful record of your transactions, including dates and addresses.
Should eggs sold in the grocery store be kept under refrigeration? L. G.
Atlanta
Georgia has no laws requiring that eggs be refrigerated in the grocery store. However, eggs must be sold at the labeled grade which in hot weather can change rapidly if the temperature is not controlled. Packers are responsible for the grade being maintained for a longer period when the
eggs are refrigerated. Therefore, m*o*st*st*ores use this method of storage.
Why can't I find the expiration date on many frozen foods? L. 0.
Barnesville It's an old line, but you can't find what's not there. Proper freezing acts as a sufficient preservative for foods. In addition, expiration dates are
rarely used on foods. Pull dates are much more common. ****
?s there something that will get rid of mimosa plants? C.M.D. Dalton
You may use 2-4-D or Animate, but please read the label directions care-
fully for application instructions and the possible affect on surrounding
plants.
