The Homemaker
Changes Images
Future Homemakers of America is a national organization of home economic students in middle, junior and senior high schools of the United States, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and American schools overseas.
The goal of Future Homemakers is to help youth assume their roles in
society through home economics education in areas of personal growth, family life, vocational education and community involvement.
The 1978-79 State Executive Council chose "Future Homemakers: A Better You - A Better World" as their state theme for the upcoming

year. State leaders are working to create more responsible individuals, the people who will one day be the leaders of this country. When we create better people, we will in turn create a better world.
As the world is changing so is the homemakers' image. The new definition of homemaker is "anyone who contributes to the bonds of love in human relationship" and that means men as well as women!
If we were to write a job description for a homemaker it might read: a caring person who is responsible for managing budgets, coordinating household tasks, planning nutritious menus, dealing with family crises, rearing children, supporting family members, chauffeuring and supervising education.

Researchers and engineers from the Georgia Tech Engineering
Experiment Station have now developed a supplementary or per-
haps even a replacement energy source for the more expensive LP
gas now commonly used. The new energy source is actually
a combination of two energy banks, solar and wood-burning heat, designed to complement each other as the need arises. On a series of
cloudy days, the wood-burning system could provide back-up for
the depleted solar system normally used, until the weather cleared.

Pumpkins Compete

Diversified crops are nothing new to Georgia farmers, but some residents may not be aware of the tasty variety that fresh grapes can add. Mr. Tom Blackstock is a cattle farmer in Hall County, but has been growing over 20 acres of both Concord and Niagara grapes for over 15 years.
In Annual Contest
The great pumpkin contest will be October 7 at the Atlanta Farmers Market. The contest, held in conjunction with the 'Paintin and Pumpkin' arts and crafts festival, will award prizes of $25 each for the largest pumpkin as well as the best decorated one.
Entries for both contests must be brought to the Atlanta Farmers Market by 2 PM, Saturday, October 7. Judging will be that afternoon and the winners announced at 5 PM. Pumpkins may be picked up between 12 noon and 6 PM Sunday, October 8. ,
Early fall is a great time to visit the farmers market, stock up on produce, enjoy an arts and crafts fair and come to the pumpkin contest. Visit the Atlanta Farmers Market October 7 and 8 and be a part of it all.

Horses,
mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
AT STUD
At Stud notices will be published in the BULLETIN four times a year, in January, April, July and October. Word limit for these ads is 35 words which must also include the advertisers' name and address. Next issue will be October 4, deadline September 27.

Grandpa's
Garden
Cucumbers should be harvested before they turn yellow while they are still green. During heavy production, cucumbers often require picking two or three times per week to encourage continuous growth. Try not to pick up the brittle vines. Any disturbance to mature vines disturbs cucumber roots and can cause wilt.
To keep birds and squirrels out of fig trees, Mrs. W. B. Bihling from Shady Dale recommends hanging long tomato peels in the tree. When the tomato vines dry and curl around the branches, they look like snakes which scare away the fruitloving pests.
Also, to keep birds away from your garden, you can invest in toy lizards and snakes at the dime store. These decoys are often all a bird needs to see to keep him away from your fruit or vegetables.
Gourds should be harvested when completely mature. Store in a dry, warm place during the winter. A dark or light-colored mold on the surface of the gourd is natural and does not indicate that the gourd has gone bad. After the gourd is completely dry, scrub off any mold or film. Paint with shellac and decorate as desired.
If your garden has a magnesium deficiency, you can correct the problem by adding epsom salts. This deficiency is often the reason tomato blooms fall off. Sprinkle a handful around plants and scratch into the surface. Then water into the ground.
Georgia Pecans
There are about two million pecan trees in Georgia, and Ray Livingston, head of the Extension Service horticulture department, says 99 percent of them were transplanted by man.

Nutrition
Another advancement in poultry production is a nutritional method of reducing poultry mortality rates.
Researchers have discovered that a sucrose solution in the first water that young chicks drink will reduce mortality rates. Also, a sucrose solution injected beneath the skin of the chicks complemented by sucrose in the drinking water reduced mortality rates even further.
Because body fat is lowest in oneday-old broiler chicks, the sucrose supplements the chick's energy supply thereby increasing survival rate.
The Homemaker
(Continued From Page 1)
And yet last year, the U.S. Department of Labor put homemakers at the bottom of 22,000 occupations ranked by difficulty.
Fewer young women are approaching marriage with the idea that he's going to take care of me for the rest of my life. Instead the team pattern of marriage with husband and wife sharing the provider, homemaker, and parenting roles is becoming much more prevalent.
Homemaking of the future will be a blend of the efforts and talents of both men and women ... a dual role. Men and women will be responsible for raising the family and having wage earning jobs.
Someone has said that there are four kinds of 'bones' in every organization. There are the wishbones, who spend their time wishing someone else would do the work. There are jawbones, who do all the talking, but very little else. Next there are the knucklebones, who knock everything anyone ever tries to do. And finally, there are the backbones, who get under the load and do the work.
Georgia Future Homemakers are the backbones! We are working to make others aware of the homemakers' changing image and involve them in changing it.

Climate Aids In Grape Production
(Continued From Page 1)
Over 100 commercial growers in Georgia produce a variety of bunch grapes including Concord and Niagara grapes as well as Fry, Higgins, Cowart and Hunt muscadines.
Fewer bunch grapes are grown in Georgia than muscadine grapes. Muscadines are less hardy than bunch grapes but thrive in the warmer southeast climate, an area in which they are grown almost exclusively.
Disease control is a must for Georgia bunch grape producers. In 1968, growers lost one to five tons of grapes per acre to rot. The cost of disease control represents only a small fraction of total grape financing when compared to the losses inflicted without these controls.
Disease control on grapes is not difficult provided strict practices are followed pruning, cultivating and spraying. Those individuals not prepared to carry out all three of these practices will not be a successful bunch grape grower.
Annual pruning, usually in December, is very important in controlling anthracnose and black rot in bunch grapes. Since these two diseases remain in the old canes through the whiter, it is necessary to prune out and burn all excess growth.
The only part of the vine kept year after year is the trunk with approximately 80 percent of the vine cut and pruned away. Only strong, healthy canes of the previous year's growth are selected to produce the following season's crop.
Muscadine grapes are recommended for both the urban and suburban dweller. These grapes grow vigorously and can be produced successfully without an intensive pesticide- spraying or pruning program.
For muscadine grape plants grown for fruit, a one-wire trellis is recommended. If the plants are intended for landscaping purposes as in background planting or dividers, a trellis with as many as four wires should be considered.
Those individuals seriously interested in commercial growing of grapes should first locate a market for their produce. Success depends first on a viable market and then on a consistent, abundant supply.
As Georgia growers seek to diversify then- crops, varieties such as blueberries, plums, figs, and bunch and muscadine grapes are becoming more prevalent. Urban gardeners too may enjoy the rewards of the hardy grape plant grown successfully as near as the back yard.
PLANTS OUTSIDE
When placing plants outside, it is a good idea to put them where they will get some shade, according to Doug Crater, Extension Service horticulturist. Under a shade tree, for example, is great for your hanging baskets. Crater says enough sun? light will get through the canopy of leaves: at the same time, the tree will give some protection against heavy winds and rain.

Often known as the 'fishing-worm tree', catalpas are native to the south. In the 19th century, catalpas were one of the most popular shade trees and were frequently planted near new homes because they were fast-growing trees.
Besides providing cooling shade, catalpas also produce some of the best fish bait in the world. The caterpillar of the catalpa sphinx moth is prized by fishermen who often hunt a tree to 'pick' their bait from before going on a fishing trip.
Although catalpas have no autumn color, their luxuriant summer shade made them valuable in pre-air-conditioning days. The attractive white flowers also added to the natural beauty of the tree.
In late summer, the tree produces seed pods which look like long beans. These 'beans' often remain on the tree long after all the leaves have dropped giving the tree an eerie silhouette in winter.
The southern catalpa tree no longer enjoys the popularity it once did. Shade trees are attractive but not mandatory to survive the sweltering summer heat. As the popularity declined and less trees were planted, catalpa trees became less and less in number since they are a short-lived tree.
Beekeeping Course
A commercial beekeeping course will be held September 19 - October 24 at West Georgia College in Carrollton. Instruction for management of bees in each season, disease control, migratory beekeeping, queen rearing and honey production will be included in the course.
For information and registration contact W. Calvin Vinson, Rt. 3, Carrollton 30117, 854-4629 or Continuing Education office at West Georgia College.
Will It Last?
Permanency is an important design criteria as the landscape is planned and developed. Well planned gardens mature over a period of time and should improve with age, says Neal Weatherly Jr. of the Georgia Extension Service.

Lately when I buy pig feed, it seems to be short by several pounds. Last week I weighed some on my scales and it was off anywhere from six to eight pounds. Do you all check into that sort of thing?
R.F. Macon Yes, we do. We have checked into the matter at the plant where the feed is bagged and necessary steps have been taken to correct the problem. ****
My home was under contract with an exterminator for several years and at the end of the first five-year period they refused to extend the coverage. Is this normal? We have since changed companies.
B.C. Decatur There is not a standard form that all companies follow in drawing up contracts. Some will extend coverage and others will not. Before signing a contract or legal form of any kind, read the small print as carefully as the larger type or you may miss some important details. ****

I bought some chitlings in a ten pound bucket and when I got home, I weighed them. On my scales, chitlings, ice and bucket all weighed less than indicated on the label.
V.L. Savannah Please realize that home scales are not as accurate as the ones used by our inspectors or the ones in the grocery store. However, on an accurate scale the net weight of the product should not include the container. We have sent an inspector to buy some chitlings and check the weight.

This summer our family has been plagued with insects indoors. I want to know about the hazards involved in using extra strength outdoor spray rather than my cabinet spray.
R. V. Nahunta The outdoor spray was intended for outdoor use and may have more effect on your family than the bugs. PLEASE FOLLOW THE LABEL RECOMMENDATIONS. In some cases several applications are required to take care of a heavy insect infestation.
