Enjoy An Apple
From A Ga. Tree
Apple harvest in Georgia is underway and will continue thru October. Georgia growers take pride in the fact that they produce a quality product and are the first new crop apples marketed each year.
For many years apple production was confined to north Geo-
[ rgia. Now apples are grown as far south as the Fort Valley area and are well dispersed towards the eastern and wesjtern borders of i the state.
Apple production in the state averages 19,000,000 pounds per year and contributes an average of $1.8 million annually to Georgia's agricultural economy. Most Georgia apples are used in the fresh market. Georgia growers seldom use Controlled Atmosphere

(CA). This type cold storage creates an artificial atmosphere that slows the metabolic rate of the fruit thus increasing the apple's storage life. C.A. has drawbacks, though, such as quick rot and often a change of taste.
Each year brings changes in the apple industry. Old orchards are retired and new ones planted. Smaller trees of semi-dwarfing rootstocks replace big older trees with more trees per acre that possess characteristics for higher quality and increased yields.
Apples can be used in a variety of ways. Fresh use is the largest taker of apples to market. But, more and more apples are being used in top quality products such as canned applesauce and slices, juice, cider, frozen slices, baby foods, dried apples and cereals.
Apples have been with us since the Garden of Eden. Archeologists have found evidence of apples dating back to the Iron and Stone ages.
Apples were brought to this country by early colonists. The first apple crops harvested in the New World were from trees planted by

Tobacco sales continue to bring top dollar prices for Georgia's gold leaf. The highest price reported so far this season is $154.08 per hundred pounds. Season sales total 68,804,302 pounds as of August 10 with an average price of $143.55 per hundred. See page 7 for tobacco market sales schedule number 2.

The Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Beef has tabulated the results of the recent referendum and announced that the Proposed Marketing Order for Beef failed to pass, due to an insufficient number of producers voting.
Of the 24,279 ballots distributed to cattle producers, only 3,518 votes were returned. The. results of the voting were 1,961 in favor, 1,011 against and 546 invalid ballots.
Ballots were declared invalid because producers either failed to vote for or against, failed to indicate their production, or failed to have their ballots postmarked before the deadline.
Joe Gayle, Chairman of the Beef Commission, said, "I am convinced

When a chicken is labeled "whole fryer with giblets", should the gib-
lets include a liver? All I have found lately, are necks and occasionally a gizzard.
R. F. Savannah Yes, giblets includes the liver, gizzard and heart according to USDA regulations. The neck is a part of the chicken meat and not a giblet.
Is there a set price for buttermilk?
I bought some recently and thought
it was very high.
L.D.
Jasper
No, the price of buttermilk, like
most other products, is based on
supply and demand and set by the
store.

Well, readers, you caught us. Glad to know you're reading carefully. Technically hornets are mem-
bers of the same family as wasps, along with yellow jackets and mud daubbers. That wasp nest was a hornet's nest and we sent the 25th caller a free brochure. Also on identification, the insects the lady sent in last week were candle moths and not small bats.

A new program adopted by the Georgia Peanut Commission now pre-
scribes that farmers grow 20 percent of their farm poundage for exporting.
vVith another record crop in the making this year and a 1978-79 budget of
$798,000, many growers are convinced that a viable future exists in export
marketing.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Dear Editor: Having spent a gre?? deal of time in the forest and
marshes studying wildlife, your article on snakes interested me. The title, however, was misleading. Snakes are not sneaky. Human characteristics can't be applied to wild animals. Snakes hide mainly for protection from other predators and from weather conditions. Also, being cold blooded, their limited movements conserve body heat.
Your article said that snakes are necessary for man's environment. Snakes are a necessary link in the food chain, but the environment is for all creatures, not just man.
Your method of snake control through the removal of their requirements is both a safe and logical solution to those who wish to rid their area of snakes.
I would like to add that in all my years in the field, I've never had a close call with any snake that wasn't caused by my own ignorance or curiosity. Given a chance, a snake will avoid man.

Horses,
mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
ATSTUD
At Stud notices will be published in the BULLETIN four times a year, in January, April, July and October. Word limit for these ads is 35 words which must also include the advertisers' name and address. Next issue will be October 4, deadline September 27.

Blueberry plants which are advertised as 1 to 2 year old plants are on the average 8 to 12 inches tall. LOOK OUT LOCKJAW
If you haven't been immunized against Tetanus, or lockjaw, in the past five years, it may be a good idea to do it now. Extension Service health specialists point out that Tetanus spores can enter through any break in the skin. A Tetanus booster may be given an injured person to provide additional protection, but it is no substitute for regular immunization.
Miscellaneous

PAINTING TIPS
Have you ever put a can of paint on a piece of newspaper and found that it sticks to the paper because the paint has dripped down the sides? Janett Gibbs, Cooperative Extension Service home economist home management, offers this solution: Try putting a paper plate under the can to catch all the drippings.
SOUTH'S FOREST
The South's contribution to the nation's total wood production now at 30 percent will increase in the future, says Nelson Brightwell, head of the Extension Service forest resources department. By the year 2000 the 13 southern states will have to supply about 55 percent of the total wood needs in the U. S. The area already produced 64 percent of the total pulpwood supply and over half of the hardwood lumber and plywood needs.

From mid summer through late September, water lilies decorate many ponds with their beautiful waxy flowers. The 'white water lily' or Nymphaea odorata grows from Canada to Florida having naturalized itself in many streams and ponds along the way.
Water lilies are perennials and reproduce from a large rhizome. The leaves float on top of the water or lie on thin mud. Although few people have enjoyed the fragrance of water lilies, they produce a delicate smell that can only be detected up close.
Water lily blooms are open during the morning hours. They close in the afternoon and when it rains. Besides
being pretty to look at, water lily buds are edible. Flower buds have been boiled, seasoned and then eaten as a survival food.

the Pilgrims in Massachusetts and the Jamestown colonists in Virginia. Today apples are the second most important tree fruit crop in the U.S. after oranges. 37 states grow apples in commercial quantities.
The Georgia Apple Commission was established August 1, 1962. Since that time growers in Georgia have united their efforts in the areas of research promotion, education and quality control.
As chairman of the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for apples, I would like to remind you that apples are a delicious, nutritious and economical snack food and a compliment to any meal, whether served as a part of the main course or dessert.

that apathy played a major role in the defeat of this referendum. There was ample opportunity for producers to cast their votes during the 30day referendum period."
A total of 23,897 ballots was mailed to producers at the beginning of the referendum. During the voting period, 382 individual ballots were distributed to producers who requested them from the Georgia Department of Agriculture and county agents.
"We genuinely appreciate the efforts of all those who voted in the referendum," Gayle said.
The Georgia Beef Commission expressed its thanks to all individuals and organizations who had assisted in its attempt to establish a Marketing Order for Beef. Special thanks was given Commissioner Tommy Irvin and the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Georgia Cow Belles, the Georgia Extension Service and the Georgia Beef Board made up of the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation, Georgia Cattlemen's Association, Georgia Independent Meat Packers Association, Georgia Milk Producers, Inc. and Georgia Livestock Markets Association.

award as Georgia's Commercial Egg Producer of the Year for 1977. Governor Busbee made the presentation to Mr. Jackson and his wife Mary in ceremonies at the Governor's office.
A certificate was also presented to Jack Davis, President of Southern Empire Egg Farms, Lithia Springs, who nominated Jackson for the statewide competition.
In naming Mr. Jackson as the state's champion egg producer for 1977, the contest judges emphasized his rigid management practices and outstanding egg production records, noted the benefits in both sanitation and extra income achieved by his waste marketing procedure and cited him as a credit to the Georgia poultry industry.
Other finalists in the 1977 Georgia Egg Producer of the Year competition were Georgia Crook, Gillsville, nominated by J & S Farms, Gainesville; Tobie J. Jacobs, Hoboken, nominated by Gold Kist, Inc., Hilliard, Fla.; Freeman G. Martin, Hoschton, nominated by Crystal Farms, Chestnut Mtn.; Jim Parker, Summerville, nominated by Black and Meek Poultry Co., Summerville and Russell C. Peanut Market

ed compensation for those peanuts used as well as for the excess crops."
McGill further explained that "a new two-price program is still federally supported but at substantially lower levels under certain conditions. Growers may now sink or swim depending on how well their crop is promoted and at what prices they are promoted in the markets, including foreign markets."
Georgia growers may increase the odds in their favor if a consistently available crop is established. India's on-again off-again policy of peanut crop availability is definitely contrary to the ground rules of international trade.
In 1975, Georgia peanut farmers harvested a record crop of 835,000 tons of peanuts. According to the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service reports, odds are three to one that this years crop will surpass the 1975 production figure.
This year's crop is not being plagued with the same problems facing farmers mid-season last year. Heavy insect populations combined with drought joined forces to slow 1977 production levels, but even with these impediments, the crop still topped the 745,000 ton mark.
An aggressive Georgia promotion will be implemented this year with a budget of over $150,000, as a result of the changes in the federal program and increased efforts to sell more peanuts. Much more of the responsibility now rests with growers and the Peanut Commodity Commission.
With the new trends in export marketing, Georgia peanuts are rapidly gaining momentum in foreign countries. Peanuts and peanut products have long been a favorite foodstuff of Americans. Their popularity is spreading worldwide.

Garden
Grass clippings make a fine mulch but don't pile them too deeply. If they are too deep, they will mat, become slimy and smell. Keep the clippings away from stems if wet as they can heat up and damage plants. To dry clippings, spread out on driveway before applying to garden.
If raccoons are raiding your garden, especially the corn, here are some ideas for saving the crop:
Leave a transistor radio on all night near the garden (protected in a plastic bag, of course). Coons don't seem to go for talk shows or rock and roll.
Blinking lights upset raccoons. Some gardeners string Christmas tree lights around the garden borders; others floodlight the area and flick the light on and off every now and then.
Put Rover and his doghouse in the corn field for a few nights.
Walk around your garden barefoot just before dark. The human smell will keep some timid coons away from your corn.
If you have lots of garden seed left over and want to save it for next year's garden, put the seed packets in an airtight plastic bag or container with a plastic lid. Store the seed in a cool dry place as heat will destroy the germination.
Next spring test your seed by placing a few seed in a wet, rolledup paper towel. Then put the paper towel in a damp, rolled-up terry cloth towel. Put this in a clear plastic bag and set in a warm spot. The seed should germinate in four to ten days.
