Research Station
Serves NW Georgia
The Northwest Georgia Branch Experiment Station is in Gordon and Floyd Counties. It serves the Limestone Valley and Upland Area of the state. The wide variety of soil types and land classes make this location well suited for research in crops and livestock.
Projects are conducted by research scientists from Griffin,
Athens, and Blairsville. The station program is designed to solve problems common, to this area of the state.
The beef bull evaluation project has been very valuable to producers in the improvement of their herds. Another project involves the

growing and finishing of steers on "home grown" feed, primarily silages. These steers are divided into groups and fed for pre-determined rates of grain at one, two and three pounds per day.
By determining efficiency of feed conversion at each level of feeding, we can calculate the most economical system under different feed cost-cattle price relationships.
A purebred Hereford herd is being utilized in a project designed to increase rate of gain through genetic improvement. This herd was involved in a management study to determine the effect of rumensin on the lactating beef cow. Another management study concerning estrus synchronization is also under way.
A backgrounding demonstration project is being initiated this summer in cooperation with the Extension Animal Science Department. Forages will include tall Fescue, Midland Bermudagrass, Tifton 44 Bermudagrass and Millet. Different types of fencing will also be demonstrated.
Agronomic projects include variety testing of corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, and small grains, planting dates of corn and grain sorghum, insect control in minimum tillage

New Tariffs Lower
U.S. Tobacco Sales
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has urged Special U.S. Trade Representative, Ambassador Robert Strauss to seek a reduction in the trade barriers which are hurting the sale of American tobacco abroad.
The European Common Market has changed its tariffs on American tobacco from a "specific duty" of so much per pound to an "ad valorem duty" representing a percent of the total value.
The effect of these tobacco tariffs are of particular importance to Georgia tobacco farmers as 2/3 of our flue-cured crop is exported overseas.
Irvin has urged Strauss to do everything possible to improve the outlook for tobacco export sales in trade negotiations now underway and has pledged the support of his office as well as the support of Georgia tobacco farmers.
License Law Changes
For Some Ga. Hunters
If you are young or disabled there are new hunting and fishing license regulations which effect you.
Effective March 1, 1979, the Mandatory Hunter Training law will require those hunters born on or after January 1, 1961 to complete an approved hunter training course in order to hunt legally in Georgia.
The hunter training course is offered free of charge to groups anywhere in the state. Contact Bob Baker, Chief, Education Section, Department of Natural Resources,

Supply Exceeds Demand

In The World Of Worms

For the past year, worm farming has been the hottest new agricultural

promotion in Georgia. Information on companies, markets, production

costs, etc. has been limited as research on vermiculture (worm farming)

was practically nonexistent.

In the past twelve months resear-

Japanese Beetles

chers at Fort Valley State College and the University of Georgia Exten-

sion Service have been busy study-

ing worm farming its potential

and risks and who is promoting it in

Georgia.

The research was generated by
numerous inquiries from Georgians who were contemplating an invest-

ment in worm farming or from frus-

The 7th Annual Stone Mountain State 4-H Horse School will be held at Stone Mountain Park Julv 30 - August 4, 1978. Instructions will be offered for six riding groups: beginning, intermediate and advanced western, beginning, intermediate and advanced hunt seat.

trated worm growers who had already invested thousands of dollars in growing a product they could not sell.
Claims made by many worm companies regarding the profit potential, worm reproduction statistics
and extensive markets available are often misleading and difficult to substantiate.
According to promotion material prepared by one of the big worm companies, "2,000 mature breeders will produce one million earthworms in one year and close to one billion in two years." At the going rate of $3.00 per pound, 1,000 worms per pound, you can gross three million dollars in two years with a small initial investment!
But where are you going to find a market for one million earthworms every year? According to an article published November 16, 1977, in the MARKET BULLETIN, researchers at

Cotton Pesticides

Approved By ERA

Mark your calendars. Watermelon Day is coming up Sunday, July 9, at the Atlanta State Farmers Market. Festivities will begin at 1:00 p.m. with an eating contest, a seed spitting contest, country music and free watermelon slices for all.

The Environmental Protection Agency has approved five new pesticides for use this year on a closely supervised basis for the control of bollworm-budworm complex on cotton.
The five are Ambush, Bolstar, Curacron, Pounce and Pydrin.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin had requested special EPA approval to use the new pesticides in anticipation of a seriou.s bollworm-budworm problem this season.

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. Hie MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the pas* 60 days.
AT STUD
At Stud notices will be published in the BULLETIN four times a year, in January. April, July and October. Word limit for these ads is 35 words which must also include the advertisers' name and address. Next issue will be luly 5, deadline |une 26.

All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. All agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition. All agricultural seed and plants must be produced by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale.
Blueberry plants which are advertised as 1 to 2 year old plants are on the average 8 to 12 inches tall. Horticulturists advise us that it takes an average of 3 more ytars before the blueberry plant will produce enough blueberries to make a pie. There will be a few berries the first year on the small rooted cutting.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Page 11

The World Of Worms

(Continued From Page 1)

Fort Valley State College stated that 50,000 backyard redworm farmers with 200 square feet of worm beds each could saturate the entire U.S. market. They could produce enough worms so that every man, woman and child in the 50 states could buy
100 redworms per year. Georgia's share of this would be
about six or seven producers per county or one grower per county with abed 10x 130feet.
The uses for worms suggested by worm companies include fish bait, protein supplement, livestock feed additive, foreign markets, sewage disposal, organic fertilizer, biological supply houses, etc.
To check the fish bait dealer market, bait dealers throughout
Georgia were asked about the demand for redworms. According to the reports received, 41 percent of the worms sold are redworms; 77 percent of the bait dealers said they can buy all the redworms they need with 73 percent of their redworms coming from local growers. When asked what portion of their redworms came from the thirteen known worm companies in Georgia, only three of the 60 bait dealers who responded had ever purchased any worms from these companies.
As a protein supplement to the human diet, earthworms are expensive. At $3.00 per pound for fresh earthworms ($25.00 per pound dried), a pound of chicken or beef is considerably less expensive. Also, educating the consuming public to eat earthworms is going to take time.
As an additive to livestock feed, research has been conducted at Fort Valley State College by Dr. Ronald Abe. Some promoters however have misconstrued the results of this research to suggest that earthworms as a livestock feed additive are economically feasible. To date, research results have not proven this to be the case.
Foreign markets? Some reports say that Japan, Israel, Italy and Mexico buy tons of earthworms. The international trade division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture has no reports of any worms being exported from Georgia.
And, according to the export trade service division of the Foreign Agricultural Service, USDA, only two inquiries have been made from foreign companies for purchasing earthworms. Although modest foreign markets may exist, the demand is not as great as worm growers may have been led to believe.
Claims that worms can help dispose of sewage is still in the research stage. Perhaps in the future they will, but only a few pilot projects are underway now. With the productive potential of redworms, only a few breeders will be needed if the sanitation facility waits for them to multiply.
Some worm promoters claim that worm castings are among the finest fertilizers known to man. Recent research, however, indicates that castings are low in nitrogen and have a slightly saline condition.
Worms for research, biological supply houses, pet food, school biology classes, etc. the list is endless. Perhaps these uses do provide some markets for redworms, but they are not an unlimit-

ed bonanza for the worm growers. With only the claims of worm pro-
moters go on, why then do people plunge into worm farming? Many people are looking for a backyard business and gold mine. The money sounds too good to be true and the worms pose no great difficulty to raise.
Newspapers, radio and television have promoted worm farming because it is a saleable story. Sometimes, though, they repeat the promoter's claims without checking the facts.
How long can the redworm boom last? The business of franchising earthworms is a cyclic one. In other states, the redworm markets peaked and fell. Some growers with franchises may make money when the market is on the upswing, but the demand may not last.
If you are thinking about entering the worm business, consider it carefully. Beware of exorbitant claims about earnings or returns on the original investment. Examine the contract carefully to determine what conditions must be met for the buy back agreement. Do you need to deliver your worms? If so, what happens if the company relocates in another state?
Check with your attorney if you are in doubt about the meaning of the contract. Consider the cost of additional materials such as beds, bedding and feed.
Above all, carefully explore the market for redworms in your area and evaluate your own ability to raise and sell them.
(In this article, all reference to worms is
redworms, the easiest of all bait worms to
produce.)
Fighting Mildew One of the best ways to keep mildew out of the house is to keep the house clean, dry and well ventilated. Mildew won't grow under such conditions.

Last year I bought a flea and tick collar for two of my dogs and the only one without ticks didn't have a collar. This year the company has an "improved" product advertised and I wonder if I should give it a try.
R. N. Zebulon It's a shame you can't ask the tick-free dog what's the trick. Your complaint is the first received against this particular company. Flea collars are
registered with the department's pesticide division, but it is possible you
purchased a faulty one. To check out the collars, confine the dog wearing a collar in an insect free area and see if the ticks are killed. Remember each
time your pet goes roaming, it may attract additional pests. It may be necessary to treat your lawn.

On our way home from a Florida vacation, we stopped and bought some peanuts in Georgia. Last year the ones I purchased were quite good. However, when I got home and opened these, they were wormy.
Mrs. P. H. Penacook, N.H.
Sorry you got a bad deal. We have investigated the situation and now the only worms sold in that store are for fish bait.

The vitamin C is killed in the heating. However, only a small amount is present originally. Vitamins A and D are added before pasteurization in order that they may be found in the final product.

Chamomile is considered to be the 'garden doctor'. Legend says that if you plant chamomile near a sick plant, it will make it well.
Chamomile is a creeping herb. It spreads rapidly by root runners and when happy, will quickly cover small areas of ground.
Anthemis nobilis is commonly known as Roman or English chamomile. Its other common name is ground apple. In old-fashioned formal herb gardens, chamomile was often planted in the walkways so that as you strolled through the garden the leaves were bruised and a delicate aroma was released.
For successful cultivation, chamomile needs well-drained, light soil and a sunny location. It is a perennial and will return every year stronger than before.
One of chamomile's most noted uses is as a hair rinse. A teaspoon of chamomile leaves can be steeped in hot water, strained and applied directly to the hair. Allow the hair to dry, brush and set. It will bring out the rich, natural color in the hair.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
June Brings Japanese Beetles
To Eat, Chew, Destroy Gardens
Warmer weather and damp earth have combined to produce increased numbers of Japanese beetles this year. The drought which plagued most of Georgia last spring reducing the beetle population has not returned as a factor lowering infestations.
MAY ! JUNE JULY AUG. SEPT. OCT. IBEETLES FEED ON FOLIAGE AND FRUI

Seasonal life cycle of the Japanese beetle.

Dry weather destroys many beetle eggs and kills newly hatched grubs. On the other hand, wet summers are favorable to the development of eggs and grubs and are usually followed by seasons of increased numbers of beetles.
Japanese beetles are destructive pests which have recently gained a foothold in Georgia. Unintentionally introduced to this country in 1916 from Japan, these beetles have migrated from their New Jersey port of entry north to Maine, west to Missouri and south to Georgia.
In their dormant season, Japanese beetles live underground as milky, white grubs. They surface in June and return to the soil by early August after they have chewed and destroyed vegetables, flowers and ripening fruit.
Beetles feed on leaves, chew out the tissue between the veins and leave a lacy skeleton.
The most effective natural control for Japanese beetles is milky spore
disease. It kills grubs after causing their normally clear blood to become milky in appearance.
Milky spore disease is harmless to humans, warm-blooded animals and plants. The dust may be applied any time when the ground is not frozen, but is particularly effective in the spring or fall.
To rid your garden or yard of these pests, a regular spray schedule using Carbaryl, Malathion or Methozychlor is recommended.

Another effective means of eradication is the Japanese beetle trap when baited with a commercially produced lure which contains a sex-attractant.

The trap itself may be purchased

or you can make

your own trap wi-

th two empty milk

jugs. Cut windows

in one jug and fold

the flaps inside.

These flaps will

prevent the bee-

tles from flying

back out of the

trap once they

have flown inside.

In a cheese-

cloth or similar

f

material bag,

I >V

place three or

four tablespoons L of the lure you

have purchased (available at most

garden and feed stores) and attach

the bag to the top of the inverted

milk jug in which windows have been

cut. Remove the screw lids from the

jugs and connect them at the neck

with tape.

Suspend the trap from a tree limb

away from vegetable or flower gar-

dens. The beetles will fly into the top

part of the trap and drop into the

bottom jug. When full, remove the

bottom jug and pour the beetles in a

mixture of hot water and kerosene to

destroy them.

I ordered plants from a mail order nursery in January and have received only a partial order and no response to my letters.
Mrs. J. D. Pembroke Too bad you had to change your spring planting schedule. The company has been contacted and you have the option of receiving a credit slip on another order or a refund on the plants not received.

Please identify this weed growing in my centipede lawn. How can I get rid
of it? L. W.
Fitzgerald
The plant is lespedeza. You will need to wait until winter when the grass is dormant to treat with a herbicide. Then you may make applications of Silvex in half the normal dosages.
