New Research
In Economics
True, much agricultural research conducted in Georgia is basic research -- research that addresses itself to future solutions to future problems that can develop in agriculture. This research anticipates questions and problems raised by Georgia's farmers and consumers.
But other work by Georgia's agricultural researchers deals with
immediate problems and today's concerns. A recent case in point is the Farm Economics Information | series developed ) by agricultural Sp economists of g Georgia's Agricultural Experiment Stations and Cooperative Extension Service. This series, which will be available soon from County Extension

agents and from the Division of Agricultural Economics, 301 Conner Hall on the Athens campus, examines current farmer's concerns, including production costs, parity, farm policy, price levels, and export issues.
Agricultural researchers in economics contributed their knowledge to this series to explain to farmers and to the general public exactly what is meant by certain current catch-phrases such as "100 percent parity". By providing a well-balanced series of information papers, agricultural economists have provided us all with a background from which we can learn about agriculture and its particular economic concerns.
One of the series' papers, "Threads of Farm Policy," written by Dale Carley and Joseph Purcell, agricultural economists at the Georgia Experiment Station near Griffin, discusses current farm policy from a historical view-point. The authors explain that national farm policy has helped shape the structure and direction of agriculture in this country, and acknowledges that farmers often react to policy changes by asking "what adjustments in my operations

Federal Funds Available Keeping Bees Increases

For Grain Storage BIdgs. In Popularity, Rewards

Farmers may now obtain Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) loans to build high-moisture forage and silage structures and for remodeling existing structures. Previously, loans were available only for. construction of new facilities for high-moisture grain or grain silage and dry grain.
During the past year, farm facility loan provisions have been broadened and liberalized to help achieve the goals of the grain setaside and farmer-owned reserve programs. Eligible producers may borrow up to 85 percent of the cost of buying and installing storage facilities and drying equipment, including concrete and wiring costs. The loan limit for this use has been increased to $50,000 from $25,000.
Additional information about the farm facility loan program and its eligibility requirements may be obtained from ASCS county offices.

In 1975, the state of Georgia officially designated the honeybee as our state insect. Not only are these insects important as a steady supplier of honey, but invaluable in the cross-pollination services rendered in their constant search for food.

In 1977 Georgia recorded 150,000 bee colonies. Yield per colony averaged 25 pounds. The 1977 value of production was almost two million dollars.

Anyone can keep bees, and colonies can be maintained just about anywhere. The three basic needs of a beginning beekeeper are an elementary knowledge of honeybees, the correct materials and a suitable location for the hive.
The honeybee ranks as one of the world's oldest domestic creatures. However, it was not until the last century that man learned how to manage these industrious workers and produce honey on a commercial scale.
The most common strain of bees kept in the United States is the Italian. These bees are yellow to brown in color, hard, industrious workers and relatively unexcitable.
The Caucasion strain is more gentle than the Italian and is also widely kept. It is gray to black in color.
The basic equipment necessary for beginning beekeepers should include the following items:

Leaders In Agriculture

1. A hive to store the bees. 2. Frames and foundation to support the honeycombs and young

bees.
Honored By Hall Of Fame 3. Smoker to blow smoke into the hive to pacify the bees when

working with them.

Georgia's agriculture has been shaped by many fine leaders who have devoted their careers to advancing Georgia agriculture.
For years these men went unrecognized for their achievements. Since 1968, however, many of Georgia's agricultural leaders have been honored

4. Hive tool, to pry frames apart to examine the hive and harvest honey.
5. Veil, to protect the face and

in the Hall of Fame established by the College of Agriculture Alumni Association.

(Continued On Page 12)

Thirteen men have been honored by the Alumni Association. Agricultural leaders who are members of the Ag Hall of Fame are:
(Listings are alphabetical.)
Tapley Bennett is noted for his contributions to all areas of agricul-
ture but perhaps is best known for his work with livestock. He worked | as a beef specialist with the University of Georgia and endeavored to improve beef cattle in Georgia. He served as livestock superintendent at the Southeastern Fair from its beginning in 1914.
During his years in agriculture, Tap Bennett organized the first ship-

ment of chickens ever to leave Geo-
rgia. He also established the first assembly line poultry processing
plant in the state. As an expert in central Georgia
agriculture, Tap Bennett was re-
commended to help President Roose-
velt develop 2,200 acres of farmland
near Warm Springs.
D. W. Brooks is credited with establishing one of the nation's lar-
gest farm cooperatives - Gold Kist, Inc. Mr. Brooks has served as agricultural advisor to Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson and on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agribusiness Industry Advisory Committee. (Continued On Page 11)

Calling All
Horse Clubs
More than 300 horse clubs in Georgia have sent their name, address and officers to the equine division. However, we know there are some clubs that have not responded.
Equine clubs who have notified us will receive horse-related news releases, bulletins, notices of equine clinics and be listed in the 'Horse and Pony Survey' of Georgia.
Members, check with your officers to be sure they have written in. Officers and a permanent address for the organization should be sent to Equine Director, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Capitol Square, Atlanta 30334.

Bread trays use to be as important in the farm home as the churn and spinning wheel. However there are very few people who still make them. J. R. Beard, Rt. 2, Box 79 A, Sylvania 30487 is one of the few people we know of who still carves bread trays. Mr. Beard says he carved each of the trays shown here from a solid block of tupelo wood.

Dear Editor: I want plans to make a light horse/mule drawn two

Dear Editor: Traveling through many of the towns in Georgia I
have observed a rapid disappearance of both large and small train stations. As I study these structures and try to imagine what might have been the activity there years past, I find myself becoming very interested in them and concerned for their survival.
I have gone to every source I can think of to try to find pictures of train stations in Georgia [only] - in every town that has train tracks present or past. I am now turning to your readers for help. If anyone can furnish me with any type pictures of train stations in and around their community I would greatly appreciate it.

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
AT STUD
At Stud notices will be published in the BULLETIN four times a year, in January, April, July and October. Word limit for these ads is 35 words which must also include the advertisers' name and address. Next issue will be July 5, deadline June 26.

FOOD GOES UP
Everyone knows that food prices went up in 1977, but do you know why? Marketing specialists with the Cooperative Extension Service say two-thirds of the six percent increase in grocery store prices resulted primarily from higher prices for fish and imported foods, especially coffee. Assembling, processing, transporting and distributing food from the farmer to the consumer accounted for most of the increase in domestic food prices.
Plant Injury
Many recommended chemical pesticides can burn plants if they are applied at the wrong rate or if they are put on when it is too hot, warn Cooperative Extension Service specialists.

The U. S. Department of Agriculture defines a small
farm as one having gross
income of less than $20,000 a year from the farming operation. Ronald Atkinson, Extension farm management
specialist at the University of Georgia, says there are
41.837 farms in Georgia that meet that definition. He says that is 71.6 percent of all
farms in the state.

To make one block, applique an arm and pocket to
the dress. Sew the band on the bonnet and one shoe on top of the other, 1/4 inch lower.

W\wt% Catnip?

:

Catnip leaves are used to make a

;' soothing tea considered one of the

\ oldest household remedies known.

I Catnip tea has been used to treat

! hysteria, nervousness and

! headaches. It stimulates the appetite

| and will insure a good night's sleep if

| taken before bedtime.

j

Like all herbal remedies, catnip tea

i has been challenged by modern

medicine. Fact is, though, that catnip

tea has been proven to be an ex-

cellent source of vitamin A and C and

does provide some relief for the

complaints listed above.

Catnip is an easy herb to grow. It

likes sun or partial shade with

moderate moisture. It is a perennial

and a member of the mint family so it

rapidly reproduces by means of

underground runners.

The leaves are somewhat heart-

shaped and covered with a soft down.

In one season the plant will grow two

or three feet tall but should be cut

back to make a compact clump of

growth.

Catnip is native to Europe. It's latin

name Nepeta cataria is derived from

an Italian town Nepi where it is

thought to be originally from.

Most people are aware of feline's

attraction for this herb. To put it

subtly, catnip drives cats nuts.

Catnip has been used as a lure by

mountain trappers to catch all kinds

of cats such as lions and tigers,

bobcats and wildcats.

Since cats enjoy catnip so much

plant it away from other herbs.

Otherwise, your garden may get

"rolled."

Grow It Big

Largest tomato - determined by weight, regardless of degree of ripeness.
Longest carrot - the green top will not be included so the top may be removed.
Largest cabbage - determined by weight.
Largest apple - determined by weight.
Largest potato - determined by weight.
Entry deadline will be September 6. For additional information contact Tim Dobbs, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Capitol Square, Atlanta, 30334, 404/6563689.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

I have bought several cans of chopped collard greens within the last few

weeks and each time my family complained that the greens tasted like

turnips. Can "collard greens" contain a mixture of collards and other

greens?

L. H.

Hiram

No. If the label says collards, that's what you should be eating. We'll be

glad to use the information you sent us to test the product in the lab and

send you a copy of the report.

****

The net weight on the brand of potting soil I purchased reads "net weight, 40 pounds," but the bulk is water. At most the volume is one cubic foot. In tests with other potting soils, this product placed last in germination and plant development.
W. T. Blackshear
Thanks for bringing this product to our attention. An inspector will get on the matter right away.

I ordered some strawberry plants from a nursery in Pennsylvania in February and after writing the com pany three times, I've received six healthy plants and two dead ones from the dozen I ordered. Can you help me?
L.M. Snellville A copy of your letter was mailed to the Pennsylvania Department of Justice and they have notified us that you will receive a refund for your order on the plants that did not arrive.
Is it true that embalming fluid is used in making ice cream?
F.N. Moultrie NO, embalming fluid is not one of the natural flavorings used in ice cream, ice milk or sherbet. No preservatives whatsoever are present in these products.
A man came to our house last week and offered to spray our house for bugs for a real good price. Does he need a license to work like that?
A. C. Griffin Yes, all exterminators must be licensed with the Entomology Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
I have a bald spot in my yard from spraying the wild mums in one cor ner. I have used several herbicides, but none have been effective, what can I do?
R. L. Tifton Unfortunately, the only weapon against this hardy weed short of moving is lots of elbow grease. ****

Don't Soak
It's not a good idea to soak wood items in water. Extension Service home economists say salad bowls and wooden handles may warp or crack, and prolonged soaking may mar their finish.

Economics
(Continued From Page 1)
should I make to make more money?"
A multitude of farm programs has resulted from efforts to stabilize and increase farm income. These programs, the authors explain, in clude acreage controls, marketing quotas, conversion, retirement and diversion payments, price supports, surplus distribution, and foreign trade policies, Yet despite all these programs, periods of excessive stocks of various farm commodities still exist.
The Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1933 attempted to create eco nomic equality between farmers and nonfarmers. The concept of parity arose from the desire to establish farm prices at a level that would gi ve agricultural commodities a pur chasing power relative to what farmers buy. Thus, the parity con cept became a legal basis to estab lish a measure of equality for Amer ican farmers.
Price supports at various levels
of parity and control of supply through acreage allotments (at times accompanied by payments for not planting) have been used to support parity. But one of the problems of ad justing farm policy to changing prices and quantities is the time lag between market relationships and farmer reaction.
Then, the 1973 Food and Agri culture Act shifted the emphasis in farm policy from price supports to target prices. In combination with storage and loan programs, target prices which are closely related to production costs, were set for wheat feed grains and cotton at levels high er than loan rates. These prices were designed to keep commercial agriculture solvent under conditions to low prices or reduced production.
Carley and Purcell point out that adjustments in target prices are made to reflect changes in the cost of production and average yield. And, until 1977, "deficiency pay ments" were unnecessary because market prices remained above tar get. The world market for U.S. ex ports had encouraged higher prices, and thus motivated farmers to in crease production of major crops.
Dr. Fred C. White explains in "Price Goals in the New Farm Bill" that Congress continued the target price concept in the Food and Agri culture Act of 1977. This legislation provides for voluntary participation by farmers. The loan and target price programs include protection

Keeping Bees
(Continued From Page 1)
neck from bee stings. Spring is the best time to begin
keeping bees. Flowers and fruit trees are in bloom and should supply the new colony with sufficient nectar and pollen to insure growth and survival.
The beginner hive should cost around $25 to $30 if new, and should be placed in a shady spot to protect the honey and bees from the summer heat. It should also be near a constant supply of cool, fresh water.
Packages of bees usually are sold according to weight, generally in units of two, three, four and five pounds. There are usually about 7,000 bees in the two pound package and the cost should be around $25.
Georgia is one of the largest shippers of package and queen bees in the nation.
Packages are available with and without queens, however, a queen is necessary to start a new colony. Queenless packages have no growing potential and are used only to strengthen an existing colony.
Georgia has an apiary inspection law in order to protect consumers and the bees from diseases and other problems.
All honeybee colonies within the state must be registered with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Division of Entomology. Bees and used bee equipment must also be certified to be disease-free by a state apiary inspector before they maybe sold, or shipped interstate.
for all eligible production if the far mer cooperates with production ad justments by setting aside pro scribed acreages. Farm policy for feed grains continues in 1978 under the target price concept with some increase in the established loan and target prices.
All farmers are affected by po licy changes, agricultural eco nomists explain, and they must be ready to react. But policy affects consumers, too. This situation cre ates a paradox--to have abundant low priced food while still main taining enough exports to achieve target prices that cover farm pro duction costs.
