Renews Growth
The new $7 million teaching hospital for the College of Veterinary Medicine is scheduled to open this fall and will add nearly 120,000 square feet for expanded clinical services and research.
The building annexed to the north side of the existing college will
house on the first floor examination and treatment rooms for food and companion animals, surgery suites, recovery rooms and animal stalls.
The second and third floors include conference rooms, library reading room, auto-tutorial center,

two-level auditorium and a number of laboratories which will enlarge the research base for the Veterinary Medical Experiment Station.
Completion of the new teaching hospital is the latest of a series of important changes brought about by the growth of the college in the past ten years. Over the total 32-year period since the college was organized, extensive growth has occurred.
Thirteen years after a former degree program was abolished the first class graduated in 1950, the same year the Council on Education of the American Veterinary Medical Association recognized and accredited the new degree program. The number of students and faculty increased substantially and graduate programs were formed.
Ever-expanding classroom and research operations, out-patient clinical services, and diagnostic laboratories necessitated subsequent additions to the physical plant.
The total enrollment of students jumped from 256 in 1968 to 342 in 1978 including 60 Georgia residents in each entering class of 86. The number of graduate students increased from 39 in 1968 to over 100 in 1978 and the number of faculty expanded to 90.

Pick Your Own New Pyramid Traps
Fruit, Vegetables
This office has received many Control Cow Face Flies
requests for places where people
can go pick their own fruits and
Face flies, a major pest of cattle, can be effectively controlled by catching
vegetables. Likewise, we know there them on traps shaped like pyramids.
are many farmers who have a small fruit orchard or several acres of vegetables who would like to get in touch with this ready and waiting market to sell their produce.
Although we can not promise to provide you with the name of a grower who grows zucchini ten miles from your home, we will be happy to tell you the nearest place reported to us where you can pick
your own. Let us know if you have produce
available or if you want to pick your own fruits and vegetables. Write Tick Your Own', Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin, Capitol
Square, Atlanta 30334 or call 404/656-3695.
Face flies can make life miserable for a dairy cow.
Face flies congregate on the faces of dairy and beef cattle. These pests
transmit eyeworm and pinkeye, and by annoying cattle cause them to cease grazing and gather in groups.
At present, there is no economically
effective control measure for face
flies. The new traps developed by
entomologist Lawrence Pickens and
animal scientist Richard Miller, have reduced face fly numbers by as much as 70 percent in experimental
pastures. The traps are constructed of 20 by
30 inch plywood triangles joined at ,the top to form a pyramid. The pyramids are painted with a white
latex paint and then covered with

The ailment may be spread by dogs and cats as these animals often rub against the plants and carry the poison on their fur. It can be carried by smoke from burning the plants. It
can even be carried by smoke from burning logs which were once covered with the plants.
The skin irritant of poison ivy, oak and sumac is a substance called urishiol, found in all parts of the
alone as a woody shrub. They may produce smooth berries, hairy looking berries or no berries at all. The leaves may be toothed or smooth edged, waxy or oily.
But one thing is certain: the leaves always appear in clusters of three. "Leaves of three, let it be", is an often expressed but effective reminder.

Farm Survey Reports
Acreage, L/S Numbers
Changing farm policies and market situations, coupled with unrest among some producers, makes 1978 a pivotal year for agriculture.
Major questions concern just how
many acres actually went into
production this season and how
many livestock are on hand. A
nationwide survey in late May and
early June will develop estimates as
guides to farmers in their market-
ings, and to commodity buyers,
traders, and policymakers.
Earlier this year farmers reported
plans to boost acreages going for
soybeans, sorghum, and durum
wheat while cutting back on corn,
oats, barley, and cotton. A cattle
count at the start of 1978 showed the
third consecutive annual drop in the

Dear Editor:
Just wanted the readers to know how to make
Dancing Mothballs. Use an untinted glass vase at least quart size. Add 2 1/2 cups water, 1/8 teaspoon
food color [any color], stir, add 1/2 cup white vinegar, stir. Slowly add 1 tablespoon soda, stirring constantly-
Foaming action will occur as the vinegar combines
with soda water. Add six or more mothballs. Use only the Naphthalene mothballs. In a few minutes, the
mothballs will begin turning, rising, falling. They will continue dancing for over an hour. You may use
greater or lesser amounts of these ingredients. If you do, keep the proportions the same.
Caution should be taken where young children are involved.

Cattle, swine, other livestock
for sale
In order to qualify to advertise cattle, cattle farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
Potential buyers and sellers of cattle are reminded that any cattle moving from farm to farm should have a negative brucellosis test within the past 30 days before they are moved whenever this is a change of ownership. Exceptions being cattle from certified herds or those consigned directly for slaughter._______________

FOREST FIRES
There were a lot of wildfires in Georgia forests earlier :his spring, but 1977 had more :ires than any year since 1968. Ted Walker, Cooperative Extension Service forester, said more than 15,000 'ires were reported in the state last year. That compares with only 7,234 in 1975. 3ut as for the number of acres jurned, 1968 was the worst year. Nearly 90,000 acres were burned that year, compared to only 25,000 in 1975.

periment Station, and the
Athens Diagnostic Laboratory were added to the college. Interns and residents became a part of the college com-
munity and two programs in animal technician training
were instituted hi conjunction with Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and The Fort Valley State College.
Parasitology and Avian Medicine each became separate departments. The Tifton Satellite Herd Health
Program and a Comparative Medical Research Fund were
established. The college now offers a
number of far-reaching programs that provide
services to Georgia as well as the Southeast. Research on
animal diseases, out-patient clinical services, diagnostic laboratories at Tifton and
Athens, the Southeastern
Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study, and consultative ser-
vices for various agencies all function to meet the growing
needs of the state and of the region.
The pace of technology is apparent in such teaching
facilities as the Medical
Microbiology Laboratory recently remodeled and equipped with closed-circuit television and videotape monitoring.
In addition to food and companion animal clinics, the college provides an Educa-
tional Resources Center including reading rooms,
auto-tutorial study carrels,
student conference rooms, and biomedical communications services for the faculty.

LOSING FARMERS
The U.S. farm population is dropping faster now than it did during the decade 196070. The average annual decline for 1974-76 was 5.8 percent, according to Cooperative Extension Service specialists. This is an even faster decline than in the 1960s when people left farms at the rate of 4.8 percent a year.

Caraway is native to Europe. It has been cultivated from Bulgaria to Morrocco, Russia and Japan. Caraway seeds have even been found in ancient lake villages in Switzerland.
Ancient Greeks prescribed a caraway seed tonic to restore the color to faces of girls with pale complexions. The Romans ate caraway seeds to relieve indigestion and they prepared the roots of the plant like carrots or turnips.
Caraway is one of the most ancient herbs. It was named after an ancient district of 'Caria' in Asia minor. The medicinal properties attributed to caraway date back to the medical papyrus of Thebes, 1552 BC.
Caraway seeds are used to flavor rye bread and are often associated with the German culture. Rye bread is made from rye flour. It is the caraway seeds in the bread everyone remembers.
As a biennial, caraway should be planted every two years. The plant produces clusters of white or pinkish flowers on a plant 8 to 15 inches tall the second year.
To grow caraway select a sunny location with well-drained soil. Seeds should be sown in August and then thinned the following spring.
Among the medicinal properties attributed to caraway, the crushed seeds are supposed to be good for colic and colds when taken in hot water or milk. If you powder the seeds in a mortar they can be made into a poultice to treat bruises. To make caraway tea bruise the seed slightly with the back of a spoon to release the oil. Boil in hot water for 5 to 10 minutes. Strain quickly and serve hot.
Besides all these worthwhile uses, caraway is also reputed to prevent baldness. According to an ancient herbal, "caraway restoreth the hair where it has fallen away."

THE MARKET BULLETIN
In recent discussion, I debated with a friend the nutritional value of brown versus white eggs. Which are better for you?
F. H. Guyton The difference hi the color of the eggs is due to the breed of hen. The nutritional value is the same.
We have ticks in our grass. How can I get rid of them? M.L.B.
Monticello
Sevin dust or spray will take care of the ticks. You may also use rabon.
If I use a herbicide on the weeds in my yard, will it be harmful to the shrubs and grass?
B. Y. Columbus
It is possible to kill other plants when spraying for weeds as most herbi-
cides are not selective in regard to control. As a precaution use a low pressure setting when spraying to reduce chemical drift and always read the label carefully.
Last week in the store, I noticed a large grocery cart of damaged cans, many leaking, for sale at reduced prices. Is this legal?
A.G. Decatur No it is not! We sent an inspector to look into the matter, but found no damaged cans. We will continue to keep a close watch over the store and appreciate you bringing this practice to our attention. ****
Is it true that chicks born in May are sleepier than others born at different times of the year?
R.L. Lumber City May chicks are no sleepier than those born hi summer, fall or whiter months. This idea is apparently based on superstition.
****
What is this weed and what will kill it without hurting my lawn? Mrs.R.W. Thomasville
The plant you mailed us is spurweed, which must be treated hi the fall with St. Augustine and centipede grass killer to avoid lawn damage. Most herbicides apph'ed during this time of year are harmful to your grass. We have mailed you a booklet on weed *co*nt*ro*l hi lawns.

matched year-earlier levels. Frasier T. Galloway of the Geor-
gia Crop Reporting Service cites the importance of producer cooperation in developing reliable current indications of acreages and livestock. Representatives from his staff will interview a cross-section of farmers and mail questionnaires to others to gather data for the estimates. Similar surveys will be carried on in all states.
Final national and state estimates will be published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Crop Reporting Board. A report on 1978 spring planted acres will be available June 30, followed July 11 with estimates of yield and production for major crops. Estimates of hog and pig numbers will be reported June 22, and cattle numbers on July 26.

Poison Ivy
(Continued From Page 1)
or small tree with gray bark. The leaves are arranged alternately with about seven to thirteen leaflets, and all leaves have smooth edges. Leafstocks are reddish and usually turned forward.
At the first sign of poisoning on your body, wash the affected area thoroughly with a laundry detergent, towel dry and apply a lotion such as calamine lotion to relieve itching.
If at all possible, avoid scratching the affected areas as this compounds the problem by spreading the ailment further.
If you discover one of the plants around your home or recreation areas and want to get rid of it, your best weapon is a chemical weed killer. Check the label to ascertain that the product contains either amitrole, ammonium sulfamate or 2, 4-D.
If severe rashes develop, consult your physician, as this may lead to fever, enlarged glands and painful abscesses especially if infection occurs.

methods of treating the traps with pesticides that would kill the flies when they land. Pesticides would eliminate the need to change the plastic every few days when it becomes covered with flies.
The traps catch the most flies near feeding and watering troughs, and when placed in areas near where cattle rest. Tests have shown about one trap per seven head of cattle to be the most effective.
Pyramids placed near drinking troughs seem to be the most effective.
