Experiment Stations
Solve Ag Problems
Georgia's Agricultural Experiment Stations demonstrate what can happen when federal research funds and state appropriations roll up their sleeves together to solve local agricultural problems.
New crop plant varieties are developed. A soil testing program
and an "optimum feeding" concept for cattle are developed. The first grain sorghum breeding program in the Eastern United States is begun. Improved varieties of forage grasses and small grains are brec; forage and grain producers as well as the Georgia

livestock industry are benefitted. The state becomes the location of the first breeding, disease control, culture and processing research on peanuts. Peanut and tobacco production is mechanized; the man hours required to produce a ton of peanuts is decreased from 150 hours to 15 hours.
The story could go on. The needs of the farm and home are met at the grass root level as agriculture remains the number one industry in Georgia, leading the nation in production of poultry and eggs, peanuts, pecans and other commodities.
The Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) system is a network of 250 University of Georgia scientists from eleven disciplines agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, agronomy, animal science, entomology, food science, forestry, home economics, horticulture, poultry and plant pathology - conducting 450 research studies in areas such as feed grains and forages, animal feed evaluation, environmental quality, ornamental plants, peaches, pecans, small fruits and soil and plant nutrients.
The AES system has proven itself to be the most effective way to use public funds to meet the needs of citizens at the local level by addressing its work to the agricultural needs of the communities around them.

ASCS Deadline
The deadline for signing up for acreage set-asides with the ASCS is April 30. Farmers who miss the deadline will not be eligible for financial assistance should disaster strike Georgia's crops again this year.
"The weather is already giving us problems and first plantings of corn are rotting in the ground from lack of moisture," according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "Farmers should take all precautions available to protect themselves from another year of financial disaster."
The ASCS (Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service) program is designed to give farmers the privilege of applying for relief payments and loans in the event of a poor crop growth such as occurred last year.
For further information contact your local ASCS office.
Sweet Onion Copy-Cats
Not &*- Famous Ga. Onions
When you have a good thing going, it seems someone, somewhere will
always try to copy. Onion growers in Vidalia and Glennville have had a
really good thing going for several years now ... a big sweet, full of flavor,
Georgia onion.
Unfortunately, a few people from
other states or areas, seeing the

Finding new markets for Georgia's agricultural products is one of the many ways the Georgia Department of Agriculture [GAD] serves our farmers. Recently Georgia agricultural and agribusiness leaders talked to Overseas Private Investment Corporation in Washington, D.C. to discuss financial assistance and insurance in exporting and marketing. In attendance were: Johnny Whitworth, Director, International Market ing, GAD; Charles Crowder, Executive Director, Ga. Agribusiness Council; Emory Brinson, Assistant Commissioner for Marketing, GAD; Graham Williams, V.P., Overseas Private Investment Corp; Don Sands, Group V.P., Gold Kist, Inc.; Jimmy Bridges, Director, Markets Division, GAD.
I need something that will kill the dandelions in my yard without harming the grass.
J.G. Macon Silvex or 2-4-D should rid you of the weeds. Follow the label directions.
My child is allergic to eggs, but I would like him to enjoy ice cream. Without the ingredients listed on the containers, I have no idea what would be safe to buy.
D.B. Waycross Because they are not required, ingredient listings are printed on a limited basis. However, your son may eat sherbet or ice milk without any allergic reactions.

Dear Editor: A lot of years ago, my family and I lived in White
County around Cleveland, Georgia, and burned firewood in a fireplace to afford heat in winter, so
cutting wood was a must. Now my husband was a whiz at getting out of this hard work, so on a nice day in October he would invite twenty to twenty-five men
friends to a day of wood cutting. We took with us two other ladies to help especially
in dressing chickens which we carried alive in a coop, along with a ten-gallon wash pot, enough rice, macaroni, butter, salt and black pepper for our
purpose. After dressing, washing and cutting up about four
or five large fryers and sometimes hens, we put them in the clean wash pot with salt and cooked them until tender, then added much butter and a goodly portion of rice and macaroni to pretty well thicken the stock
they were cooked in. This took about 30 minutes. The men did a good days work, not expecting pay,
but all the food they could eat at two big meals. Everyone had a good time working at their own pace, telling and listening to tales of their choice, and were ready the next time they were invited to go chop wood and eat "Chicken Mull".
Yours very truly, Mrs. Ocie M. Palmour 21 Craig Dr.

Basil is one of the easiest herbs to grow and should be c ie of the first herbs you include in your herb gar den. It is an annual so you have to re plant every year but basil grows quickly to an attractive plant with shiny leaves.
Select a sunny location for basil. It needs warm, moderately rich soil but requires no fertilizer. As with many herbs, flavor is sacrificed for lush fol iage if fertilizer is applied. Pinch back new leaves at the end of stalks so the plant will be bushy instead of leggy.
Basil is a very old herb. It is native to the middle East and is called "tulasi" in India. It is regarded as a sacred herb, cultivated near temples and homes as a protector from misfortune and a guide to heaven in death.
Italians associate the herb with love and compassion. According to Italian lovers, love comes to couples who wear a sprig of basil tucked be hind the ear.
In Persia the plant was known as "rayham" and was cultivated in ce meteries. In Persia and Egypt, basil was regarded as a herb of funerals and a required ingredient to reach the land beyond.
There are several popular varieties of basil. The sweet basil which is the most widely known for its culinary uses grows about two feet high. It bears small white flowers which should be pinched out to keep the sweet herbal flavor from becoming harsh and pungent.
There is also a dark opal basil which is mainly used for decoration. The purple-bronze foliage is particu larly attractive when the lavenderpink flowers appear in late summer.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Easter Pets Often Suffer, Require Mature Attention
In order to provide for the thousands of Easter pets given to children each
spring, proper care must be exercised. The U.S. Humane Society estimates that ninety per cent of these pets perish within a few weeks, victims of starvation, malnutrition and general abandonment.
According to Brenda Ingram, Director of Public Relations for the Atlanta Humane Society, the novelty to children of the small chick, duckh'ng or rabbit wears off after a few weeks when the animal has grown in size and responsibility has mounted. At this point many are abandoned or left to the mercy of neighborhood dogs and cats.
The problem in many instances seems to stem from a lack of information about the care and attention necessary for these pets. "These animals must be provided with the proper shelter and food in order to survive", said Ms. Ingram. "Small children can not accomplish this task alone and need to be guided and instructed by a responsible individual."
Chickens, rabbits and ducklings all require housing outside of the home proper, for sanitation reasons. Those animals maintained in cardboard boxes in children's bedrooms, basements, etc., invite disease such as salmonella, especially young growing chickens. The animals need

practitioners as to the proper technique to take cultures from suspect animals.
As a bacterial venereal disease of horses, GEM affects breeding efficiency. Signs in mares include a vaginal discharge and failure to conceive. Stallions can be successfully treated but to date, there is no sure cure for mares.
The disease was apparently introduced into Kentucky by horses imported from France before a September 1977 import ban was imposed on breeding horses from France, Ireland, Great Britain and Australia.
Those individuals having reason to believe this infection exists in their animals should contact their veterinarians at once.

Is all gasoline the same? I have been saving money buying at a cheaper station, but wondered if this is wise.
M.W. Atlanta All gas is not exactly the same, but all gas must meet minimum standards set by state laws. As long as you are buying the same grade, there should be no problem.

a cage or pen large enough to provide exercise room as well as protection from extremes of heat and cold. Proper nutrition can be provided through regular feed and grain stores or pet stores originally selling the pets.
Rabbits tend to have a better survival rate and are cleaner and easier to care for according to Ms. Ingram. Housing can be provided by a simple 4x4x2 wire hutch per rabbit, with straw and leaves inside for winter cover. Ducklings seem to survive next best and many thrive in suburban locales with a small lake or pond nearby to which they can migrate as they grow older. Both ducklings and chicks must be maintained in a fenced enclosure away from extremes of heat and cold until they reach older ages and become more adaptable.
For the parents or children who no longer want their pets, the Humane Society provides the best alternative. Animals brought here are resold to older children and families who are sincere about raising them as pets. A further alternative would be to advertise in newspapers for interested individuals.
State Veterinarian Dr. John Cobb said the poultry industry is so large and specialized, that the possibility of disease spread prevents anyone in the business from accepting baby chicks from unwanting homes and children, and the rabbit industry would probably react similarly. "The solution it would seem", said Dr. Cobb, "would be to appeal to the people's conscience. Parents must be prepared to accept the responsibility for the proper care of these pets."
Sweet Onion
(Continued From Page 1)
So be patient. The "real thing" onion will be ready for harvest around the first of May. And, read the labels. One thing the labels and tags all have in common is the "g" with a leaf on top, signifying it is a Georgia grown product.
Suggested Uses for Sweet Georgia Onions
Make an onion sandwich; they are sweet enough to eat as is. Peel, core and fill with butter. Bake slowly for 30 or 40 minutes. Chop a Georgia Sweet Onion, potato and cube a little cheese. Wrap together in a foil pouch. Place on the grill along with your meat. French fry the rings in a pancake batter.

Experiment Stations
(Continued From Page 1)
Research projects at major Georgia AES stations located in Athens, Experiment (near Griffin) and Tifton along with branch stations in Blairsville, Calhoun, Eatonton, Midville, Plains and Attapulgus aim at solving the problems of the local people.
The Georgia system falls in line with the contributions and leadership of AES research systems established in each state by the Hatch Act of 1887. Agricultural Experiment Station research has given the United States better crop varieties, control of crop diseases and nutrition. It was AES research that gave this country hybrid corn, vitamins, streptomycin and. biological control of pests.
In Georgia, agricultural research is, bringing in a new day of irrigation and soil management practices, selection and breeding and crop management. Experiment station research in Georgia will continue in its commitment to use its public funds to answer the agricultural problems around us.
