Poultry Labs

Serve Georgia

The Georgia poultry industry is more fortunate than that of most states. Its system of. six poultry diagnostic laboratories are operated on contract with the Georgia Department of Agriculture by the Georgia Poultry Improvement Association. These laboratories are located in Canton, Dalton, Douglas, Oakwood, Royston and Tifton.
In the last several years there has been a tremendous increase in
| the number of bir\ ds located in east ! Central Georgia. These poultry producers had no access to poultry diagnostic laboratory services so the state legislature appropriated $80,000 to set up and operate a laboratory in Statt| esboro. Georgia Southern College has made a building available on its

campus that will be remodeled for this purpose. When this laboratory becomes operational, it should fill a real need for the poultrymen in that area.
A number of new viruses have recently been isolated and identified in poultry. These have different characteristics from more familiar strains such as Newcastle virus, infectious bronchitis virus, fowl pox virus, etc. and require a specially trained individual to work with them. In an effort to help us perform the best services for the industry, the legislature has approved a position for a virologist at the Oakwood laboratory beginning July 1, 1978.
Because of the economic impact of the poultry industry, we need to be in the best possible position to isolate, identify and set up prevention and control measures for any potentially devastating disease that might inadvertently get into our poultry population. These new programs will help us achieve that goal.

Appearances Springtime Weather Excites

Can Mislead
But Labels Never Lie
Read the label to know how much you are buying. Don't "think" it looks like a 50 pound bag of goods without checking the label for the actual net weight.
"This is especially important to farmers purchasing seed corn," according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "In past years most corn seed, particularly hybrid, was marketed in one bushel or 56 pound bags. This year, however, many companies are marketing corn in odd weight bags such as 40 pound, 43 pound, etc."
The odd weight bags make it difficult for a purchaser to compare prices unless they check the label to find out the actual net weight.
The Department of Agriculture checks all agricultural product containers such as seed bags to be sure that the information on the label is correct but it is up to the purchaser to check the label himself.

Anglers With Bait and Tackle

Anglers take note. The fishing season is here again, and this year promises to be just as productive as last year, maybe even more so if one knows the right lake or stream to wet a line.

Start Now To Grow
A Prize Pumpkin
Begin planning now to grow the biggest pumpkin in Georgia.' The Georgia pumpkin contest will be staged at the Atlanta State Farmers Market prior to Halloween.
To grow a winner, start with a hardy variety. Two varieties suitable for Georgia gardens that produce large pumpkins are Big Max and Mammoth King. You might also check with your county agent for other pumpkins that will grow well in your area, hi choosing seed, check the maturation period and add about a three week margin of safety for a full size pumpkin.
For your garden, select a sunny spot with full sunshine during the day. Cultivate an area about six feet in diameter and 10 inches deep.
(Continued On Page 11)

There aren't many sports which can be practiced by young and old, male and female alike, but fishing and especially fishing in Georgia fills this void like no other sport. Good fishing can be found in over 60,000 ponds and lakes, 3,500 miles of
warm water streams, and 300,000 acres of reservoirs so the average angler should have little difficulty finding a spot close to home.
In addition, Georgia offers a wide variety of game fish unsurpassed in
most other states. Every major popular game* fish is found in the
state including large and smallmouth bass, rainbow, brook and brown trout, chain pickerel, crappie, bream, channel catfish, striped bass, Spanish and king mackerel, blue fish and tarpon.
Fishing laws and regulations although strenuously enforced, are
not so restrictive as to deny active participation year-round for most
species. There are no seasons on sportfish with the exception of trout. Trout season extends from late March to the end of October, with a
possession limit of eight fish per day

Ga. Apple Growers

Vote On Increase

For those lovers of the great outdoors, finding a secluded spot off the beaten trail can often mean bonus pounds when you reel in your catch. Georgia is blessed with an abundance of these spots on coastal islands, intercoastal waterways, and mountain lakes and streams.

The Georgia Apple Commission
has called for a vote of apple producers on the question of increasing the assessment from 1 cent per bushel to 2 cents per bushel. The 30-
day balloting period, as required by law, will begin on April 15 and end
at midnight on May 14, 1978. The increase in assessment would be-
come effective on July 1, 1978. Barr Miller, Chairman of the Ag-
ricultural Commodity Commission for Apples, said "This is desperately
needed to keep pace with inflation and to insure that we are competi-
tive in marketing Georgia apples. The increase would allow the Commission to become involved in areas that heretofore we have been un-
able to consider". Commission representatives met
with apple growers throughout the state recently to explain the refer-
endum and the urgent need for an increase in assessments.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Wednesday, April 12,1978

Dear Editor: About 20 years ago there was a fad going round to
put mothballs, vinegar and soda [I think] together in a glass container. The mothballs would float up and down continuously and made a very interesting conversation piece. I can not, however, find information about how much vinegar, soda, etc. go together. Do any of your readers know?

SPRING TUNE-UP Chances are your lawn mower could use a spring tune-up. Extension Service engineers say four quick tasks can mean the difference between smooth operation and trouble. (1) Replace the spark plug or clean the old one and reset the gap. (2) Clean the air filter and wipe dirt from the blower housing and screen. (3) Change the oil. (4) Sharpen the blade.
CLEAN FIBERGLASS Gently. That's the way you should clean fiberglass bathroom fixtures, say Extension Service home economists. Never use gritty harsh cleaners on fiberglass, they advise. Start out by using a household liquid detergent, warm water and a soft cloth or sponge. For difficult-to-remove stains, use turpentine or a household glass cleaner.

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart
buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertise-
ment through the Market Bulletin
should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State
Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the
prime breeding season "aly, January through April.

I bought ice cream at my grocery store and it appeared to be old. I had to discard it. Why don't they put the date and ingredients on the carton?
Mrs. N. H. Thomaston Ingredients and dating are not currently required on ice cream, although labeling rules are now being formulated. Many of the larger companies voluntarily print this information on the cartons along with an expiration date. Ag Line contacted your grocery store and if you are dissatisfied hi the future, you may either have your money refunded or the merchandise replaceed.

A Prize Pumpkin
(Continued From Page 1)
Add fertilizer, particularly nitrogen, and lime. Pumpkins need lime for a ph of six or better. Organic matter will help loosen the soil and maintain moisture. Before planting the seed, wet the soil and let it dry for a day or so.
When the plant is two to three inches tall, pinch all but the best runner. Every two to three weeks sprinkle a quarter cup of fertilizer around your plants, being careful not to get any on the leaves. When the pumpkins are the size of a coffee cup, gently place about 5 inches of hay between the fruit and ground, but don't cover the plants.
When the weather gets dry, water your plants once a week long enough to thoroughly wet the soil. With a good root system, the pumpkins should grow without artificial assistance such as sugar water pumped into the stems. Adequate moisture is needed, although too much dampness will cause rotting. Rainfall is not a reliable source of water for producing a winner.
The 1978 biggest pumpkin in Georgia could be yours. Start to work today.

Anise is one of the oldest herbs recorded. It is originally from Greece and Egypt and traveled with the Romans to northern Europe and England.
The Emperor Charlemagne was very interested in experimental farming and had anise plants brought to Germany in the 8th century to try them out on his farm. Anise flavoring has been a very popular German flavoring agent for foods ever since.
Anise is a member of the carrot (Umbelliferae) family. It is an annual plant which produces white flowers on the end of two foot stems.
The most unusual characteristic of anise is the fact that there are two types of leaves on the same plant. First there are the base leaves which are bright green oval shaped leaves with toothed edges. Then there are the stem leaves which are smaller, elongated and divided into three segments.
Anise is propagated by seeds. Sow the seeds in early spring in lightly fertile soil which is well drained. The herb does not transplant well because of its single long taproot so space the seeds out when planting.
Medicinally, anise has been important since 1500 BC. Since early Biblical records, anise tea has been used to sooth jangled nerves, sleeplessness and indigestion. To prepare anise tea, bruise seeds lightly with the back of a spoon to release the oil. Boil 1 cup water in an enamel, glass or porcelain pot (never metal), add bruised seeds and simmer 5 to 10 minutes, strain and serve hot.
Anglers
(Continued From Page 1)
per person. Most other fish quotas are high enough to allow the average participant to fish at will.
A fishing license is required from the Department of Natural Resources of all anglers sixteen years and older for fishing at all public fishing facilities. Cost of the license is $3.25, with a trout stamp costing $2.25 for those going after trout.
The outlook for early April fishing in Georgia lakes and reservoirs appears to be fairly good. A few more weeks of warm weather should bring most game fish back to the banks where they will feed quite actively before going on the beds. Bass begin preparing their nests when the water reaches 65 to 68 degrees in the spring, and bream and crappie respond similarly.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

I want to have my mattress recycled or restored. Is it legal? L.F.
Savannah There are laws regulating the method used in renovating a mattress. All
materials must be sanitized, but the* p*r*oc*ess is legal.

Some food products sold in Georgia have approval of other state depart-

ments of agriculture on the labels. Please explain.

A. S.

Augusta

Regulations enforced by the various states are uniform for the most part.

However, some states require that registrations be printed on the labels. To

economize in printing labels, some companies have only one set of labels.

The various state seals are simply an indication of the product's registration

and not a measure of quality.

I recently had a very pleasant trip through your state except for one

thing. At the exit from 1-95 to Highway 40 we saw big signs advertising

pecans for $3 a pound. Great. We got off only to find the deal was IF you

bought $5 worth of other products, otherwise the price was 99 cents for a

pound of imitation bits. WE went home to Virginia with no pecans.

Mrs.E.J.W.

McLean, Virginia

Thanks Virginia. The signs are gone now and action has been taken.

Sorry one rotten pecan deal spoiled your stay in Georgia. Ninety nine and

44/100 percent of our merchants are good, reliable businessmen. But a very

few will try to take advantage of customers. Beware of the "too good to be

true." It usually is.

Is "tenting" always required for powder post beetles? W. H.
Bade City, Fla. There are two methods of eliminating powder post beetles. One is by surface treatment and is safe for the home-user. Heavier infestations may re-
quire tenting or fumigating to rid your home of the pests and is used by pro-
fessional applicators only.

Spring and Summer Flowers Add Color and Beauty

Annual flowers can be the key to a successful and attractive yard. They are easy to grow, provide lasting color throughout the summer, and can transform a dull yard into a thing of beauty.
For outstanding specimens, work the soil thoroughly to a depth of eight inches. Make certain it is adequately drained. Improve the soil by adding organic matter such as peat moss or manure.
Plant seeds no deeper than the seed package recommends and transplants no deeper than they grew in their containers. Do not rely on summer rainfall. Water plants regularly but do not overwater. Fertilizing regularly produces lush foliage and full flowers. Use light but frequent applications of 8-8-8 or 1010-10.
Dairy Contest
For Best Recipes
The annual Georgia Farm Bureau Dairy Recipe Contests will be held the week of May 8-13. The event is sponsored each year by the Georgia Farm Bureau Women's Committees and the dairy farmers of Georgia.
All recipes must be submitted no later than May 1 , and a copy of the recipe must be provided along with the entry. These should be printed or typed on 5" x 7" cards with contestant's name and address on the back. County winners will participate in a district contest to be held the week of May 22-27. For further information contact your County Farm Bureau.
