Sunbelt Show
Coming Soon
Not since the Cotton States Exposition of a century ago has Georgia been the host for an ag expo with the predicted impact of the Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition, October 10, 11, and 12 at Spence Field near Moultrie. Based on 60 years of successful Midwest farm show formats, Sunbelt is well on the way to being the first agricultural showcase of the South.
Sunbelt is unique in that it brings to the South a comprehensive
view of virtually every aspect of agriculture, with field demonstrations as well as static exhibits. Set in the midst of the rich farm belt of Georgia, the expo site covers 1680 acres complete with an active 9000 foot hard surface runway and 200 camper hookups. These factors, combined with the timing of Sunbelt, are the major

reasons for the impressive list of cosponsors for the show. The sponsors, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service-Rural Development Center, PROGRESSIVE FARMER, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Coastal Plain Experiment Station, city of Moultrie, and Georgia Department of Agriculture, are all doing their part to bring to the farmer, agribusinessman and consumer a different type of educational experience.
A part of this education will be provided by national representatives of the 127 companies already signed. These exhibitors range from synthetic oil distributors to nationally-known tractor and equipment companies to home appliance manufacturers. Exhibit space begins at 8x10 feet, and runs as large as 200x250 feet - almost 1.1 acres! In addition, several of these companies have provided, on a grant-in-aid basis, over $200,000 worth of equipment and supplies for the expo.
Of the total expo area, 400

Commissioner Irvin discussed with James Sims [left] of Columbus and Fred Latham, General Manager of the Bibb Company, the comeback that cotton is making and how many consumers today are looking and asking for 100 percent cotton in their clothes.

The export promotion program will market an all-american type of peanut butter to be introduced into United Kingdom markets this year. The venture is considered one of the National Peanut Commission's most important programs aimed at encouraging export of U. S. peanuts

Purple Martins Make
Good News For
Interesting Garden Pets
If you don't have a purple martin colony in your garden this spring, now is
the time to plan for next year's spring migration. These sociable birds
return every year to the same nesting sites where they feed on flying insects
from spring until early fall.

Peanut Farmers
The recent action regarding resale of non-quota peanuts held by GFA is welcome news. The minimum resale of $400 per ton for peanuts held by the government should assure our farmers of at least this price for the non-quota peanuts.
Secretary Bergland's original announcement of $250 per ton support price for non-quota peanuts was discouraging to say the least to every peanut farmer in Georgia. Bergland had been urged by our Congressional leaders and by Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin to reconsider and to raise the support price to the original $420 per ton because of the strong demand for Georgia peanuts in world markets.

Dear Editor: I would like to answer the lady's letter about the
three seeds. This gourd she has grown is what old folks use to call running okra. She can plant it close to a small tree and let it run up the tree or frame it and the gourds will grow long and more straight.
You can cut the amount you want to cook off and it will heal over and keep growing. You can slice it like an okra pod, roll it in meal and flour and put it in a pan of grease. Put your salt and pepper in as you would for okra and fry. It makes a delicious dish.
I also wanted to write you about maypop vines. We used to call them 'apricots'. We used to think they were just something to step on and listen to the pop but after I married my mother-in-law would go out in the field and gather the fruit when it was young while the seeds were tender and peel off the outside, roll the pulp in meal and flour and put it in a pan of hot grease, salt and pepper and fry it.
Mrs. Verdie Mae Cook 1403 Big Shanty Road Kennesaw, Georgia 30144
(Editor's note: Your information on the 'gourds' is right but it is not running okra. It is called the cave man's club gourd or just the club gourd. Running okra is ribbed this is smooth outside.)

DON'T PACK SOIL
The less you pack the soil in your garden, the better. It just stands to reason, says Jim Barber, Extension Service horticulturist, that a plant's roots will have an easier time getting into soil that's loose and loamy than they will soil that's hard and packed. Wheel tracks and foot paths, once established, should be used throughout the growing season. In other words, walk in the middles and not on the rows.

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare wifi ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin
should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

colorful sight, chattering and looping through the air in pursuit of butterflies, beetles, flies and grasshoppers.
Their ability to control insects, particularly mosquitos, has been overated in some instances. Martins seek food from dawn until dusk, while mosquitos are active from twilight into the night.
The birds winter in South and Central America arriving in south Georgia by late January or early February and appearing in north Georgia a few weeks later. The earliest reported sighting in Georgia this year was January 29 in Augusta.
Martins live in colonies ranging in number from 12 to 100 houses. They return to the same nesting site each year. In selecting a nesting site, they will choose a complex with space for each pair of

Sodding requires soil preparation similar to that for seeding. However, once the seedbed is prepared, the growing plant in the form of sod pieces is placed over the entire lawn site.
On slopes these sod pieces may need to be fastened to the soil with a wooden stake to prevent washing and erosion. It is important that the sod be laid properly.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
ttflwl 9 AH Held? Seeding, Sowing, Sodding
For A Beautiful Lawn While you are laying out your
spring vegetable garden, make room
for herbs. Although a separate herb garden is lovely, herbs will do well mixed in with vegetables or flowers and will lend another dimension to your garden.
Planting a new lawn is not as easy as it looks. Unless you use the proper techniques, all the hard work spent preparing the site may be wasted.
If a seeded variety such as fescue or common bermuda is to be planted, then seeding would be in order.
Cultivated herbs such as dill, basil, rosemary, chives, etc. are so easy to grow it is a shame more people do not include herbs in their garden. There is nothing more delightful than fresh sprigs of mint in your summer iced
The best way to distribute seed is with a mechanical seed spreader cyclone or broadcast type or gravity flow seeder. Divide the required amount of seed into two equal amounts. Apply one-half of the seed in one direction across the lawn and
relatively free of soil, and placing them on the soil surface. The plant

Historically herbs have always been important to man. They have been regarded as symbols of life due

Once the seeds have been
to their healing properties, their use planted, rake the area lightly to
in preserving, purifying and ornamen tation.
Herbs were first used in preserving foods and only later were appreciated for the flavor they added to the food. Herb remedies were the first medicines known to man and have been used as the basis for many modern-day drugs.
Besides their essential uses for medicine and food preservation, herbs were widely used to combat odors and insects. "Strewing" herbs were those fragrant herbs placed on the floor of public places such as the courtroom, stores and churches. Ladies tucked sprigs of lavender in
their pocket to sniff if bad orders came too close.
provide some soil cover. Place a light mulch over the lawn to help keep the seed moist and to enhance germination. The mulch also prevents soil erosion during heavy rains.
If straw is used as a mulch be sure it is weed free. A bale of straw will cover approximately 1000 square feet. If you don't spread this

material too heavily, it may be left on the lawn to decompose after the lawn is established. Peat moss or aged sawdust do not make good mulches.
When the seed is down and the
parts are then mechanically inserted into the soil. Once this has been accomplished, irrigation should begin immediately and continue until plant parts begin to grow and cover.
Plugging uses small pieces of sod approximately one to three inches in diameter placed in the landscape six to twelve inches apart. While complete coverage can be obtained by plugging, it is perhaps the slowest technique for vegetatively propagating lawn grasses. For example, zoysiagrass lawn plugs planted six to twelve inches apart may take from eighteen to twentyfour months to cover the lawn area.
Sodding, the quickest and most expensive form of planting, may pay

Q. The super market where I shop often has carts filled with discounted
items. Many of the cans are bent and some have torn or missing labels. I'd
like to take advantage of these sales, but have been reluctant.

Statesboro
A. Stores are required to remove damaged cans from the shelves. They
are allowed to sell these in small quantities at reduced prices. HOWEVER,
labels cannot be completely removed and you should not buy cans that are
puffy, leaky or bent at a seam. Now you may take advantage of the bargains
as a wise shopper.

You can also get a copy of the birth certificate if the child was born in Georgia by writing the Vital Records Office, 47 Trinity Avenue, S.W., Room 217-H, Atlanta 30334. Send the child's full name, date and place of birth, father's full name and mother's full maiden name. There is a $3.00 fee which should be sent by U. S. Postal Money Order or certified check.
Q. My new car manual says I should use gasoline with 90 octane or greater. Sometimes I notice the pumps only contain 86 or 87 octane, I'm confused.
O.J. Cartersville A. That's O.K. It can be confusing. But the 87 or so octane is OK for your car as it is an average reading between motor performance and lab checks.

irrigated acres will be devoted to harvesting and tillage demonstrations involving peanuts, corn, cotton, and soybeans, plus seed, fertilizer, and chemical plot demonstrations. Approximately 60 acres of static exhibit area will encompass individual exhibits and the Consumer-Family Living Show and an agribusiness tent. The remaining area is designated for car, bus, camper or airplane parking.
But Sunbelt is not only for those of South Georgia - it is a multiregional event. The Cooperative Extension Service of Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi, and North and South Carolina have each pledged their support for this longneeded exposition.
Site manager Don Nicholson is now in the process of readying the site for planting. The countdown has begun. The outlook for the Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition, Inc., and southeastern agriculture is bright indeed.
