Weather Affects
Fertilizer Supply
The most severe winter in many years is having a significant impact on the fertilizer supply outlook. In planning for your supply for spring crops, we suggest that it would be prudent to consider the following:
Natural gas curtailments are restricting the output of anhydrous
ammonia at many production facilities, including some that supply this fertilizer material to Georgia manufacturers, dealers and farmers. Since anhydrous ammonia is also the building block for other nitrogen-bearing products the "domino effect" is obvious;
(Our guest columnist this week is H. T.
Ray, President, Georgia Plant Food Educa-
tional Society, P. 0. Box 1685, Atlanta

and affects the supply of ammonium nitrate, and nitrogen solutions for both manufacturing mixed fertilizer and for direct application to the soil as well.
The competition for available rail cars is already fierce. Grain movement fqr export will make it difficult to ship fertilizer materials over land on a timely, reliable basis. Rail transportation problems and rail car shortages will be especially critical in the movement into Georgia of such fertilizer materials as potash and phosphates;
Many rail tank cars and tank truck transports which normally transport anhydrous ammonia have been pressed into service to transport fuel to relieve critical shortage areas;
Fertilizer deliveries this fall were not up to expectations and inventories are minimal;
Planted acreages for corn and other major crops are forecast upward. Many farmers anticipate increasing fertilizer usage to improve yields and combat rising operating costs. Clearly, buyer demand will be strong.
The winter is far from over. Weather-related factors may stabilize or deteriorate further. But now is the time to carefully evaluate all of the factors which may affect your supply of fertilizer for spring crops. Don't wait until planting time.

Weights, Measures Week

Fred Voigt, a graduate of old Eleventh District A & M School [now South Georgia College] in 1920, and a farmer ever since, is the 1976 recipient of the "Friend of County Agents" award, the highest bestowed by the Georgia Association of County Agricultural Agents. Harvey Johnson, left, Bacon County Extension Chairman and president of GACAA, presented the award at the Associations' Annual Meeting in Macon.
'76 Corn Crop
Breaks Record
Georgia's corn crop for 1976 was quite a crop. Georgia's corn producers set a new yield per acre average of 56 bushels per acre, and 22 Georgia corn growers produced 200 or more bushels per acre on five or more acres.
You heard right, 22 corn producers in Georgia had an average of over 200 bushels of corn per acre in 1976. That's quite an accomplishment since only four other farmers in the state have previous records of 200 bushel production.
Shetland Assn.
To Hold Meet
The recently formed Georgia Shetland and Hackney Pony Association will hold its next meeting March 13th. All interested parties are invited to attend.
For more information, please call Dave Chambers, 548-1022 or Tony and Seria Phillips 945-9348.

Celebrated In Georgia

"Metric Awareness Now" is this years theme for Weights and Measures Week, proclaimed by Governor George Busbee. The week long observance
is an annual event commemorating the anniversary of the signing of the first Weights and Measures Law in the United States on March 2, 1799.

Egg Producers
Continue ACC
Georgia Egg Producers have once again voted favorably to continue the GEORGIA AGRICULTURAL COMMODITY COMMISSION FOR EGGS for another three year period. Of those producers voting, 80 per cent were in support of continuing the Commission.
With the vote of approval, producers will continue paying 2 cents per thirty dozen case of eggs to the Commission for its work in promotion, education, and research.
Asiatic Newcastle
Found In Georgia
Veterinary inspectors of the Georgia Department of Agriculture destroyed many of the birds exposed to Asiatic Newcastle at two pet shops in Georgia last week and launched a search for others that have been sold.
Asiatic Newcastle is a deadly fowl disease that could seriously threaten Georgia's multi-million dollar poultry industry.
Although Asiatic Newcastle is not contagious to humans, it is so deadly to all fowl that a constant vigil must be kept to insure the safety of our poultry industry and wild bird population.
An Asiatic Newcastle outbreak in California poultry four years ago cost millions of dollars to bring under control and eradicate while decimating the poultry industry in some areas of that state.
State and federal veterinary inspectors are continuing their vigil to search out and eliminate any throat of Asiatic Newcastle in Georgia.
Spring Farmland
The Spring Farmland Edition is coming March 23rd. The deadline for nds received in the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN oifirn i? *> V.rr.h 9th.

The principal purpose of National Weights and Measures Week, observed this year March 1-7, is to acquaint the public with the important services weights and measures officials provide protecting consumers and business interests from incorrect weight and measures. Weights and measures officials of the Georgia Department of Agriculture inspect and test all weighing and measuring devices to insure accurate measurement.
According to Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Thomas T. Irvin, "Most people take the accuracy of weights and measures for granted. It actually requires many thousands of man-hours by department of agriculture personnel to insure this accuracy." The agriculture department continually weighs prepackaged items in stores throughout the year. In addition, weighing and measuring devices are checked for accuracy at industrial, packaging, and retail outlets.
The signing of the Metric Conversion Act of 1975 has produced a greater awareness of the metric system in the United States. For the present, however, the country is still in the early stages of conversion. The Metric Conversion Act does not establish a master timetable for the conversion but allows each sector of the economy to convert at its own speed based on its need and limitations.
The Georgia Beekeepers Association was the first in the nation to welcome the 1977 American Honey Queen, JuHe Schmitz from Pierre, South Dakota. Pictured with Julie is GBA's oldest active female beekeeper. Ruhy D. Nolan, age 75.

_Dear E_d,.itor:

Side View (notice the offset appearance).

I would like to find out what this tool is used for. It

appears to be a blacksmith tool but the blacksmiths

that have been questioned do not know the answer.

The working end of the tool is a sharp pointed in-

strument. Back in the jaws of the tool appears to be a

scissor instrument; but both the scissor and pointed

hooks are offset, seemingly on purpose.

The tool belongs to my father-in-law and our cur-

iosity has the best of us. If any of your readers know,

please advise.

USEFUL 'BEAN
A bushel of soybeans produces 11 pounds of oil and 47 pounds of high-protein meal. About 90 percent of the oil is used in such products as margarine, shortening, salad oils, cooking oils, and mayonnaise. Some products using edible soybean protein are found in just about every home today. Over 95 percent of the soybean meal is fed to poultry and livestock.

BABY PIGS
How big a little pig is at birth has a lot to do with whether he lives or dies. Approximately 50 percent of all pig deaths occur during the first three days after birth. Dr. Thomas W. Powell, veterinarian with the Georgia Extension Service, says pigs weighing 2.2 pounds or less at birth have only a 50 percent survival rate. On the other hand, pigs weighing 3.2 pounds or more have an 80 percent chance of making it.

Plantain is a common yard weed

found in practically every part of the

United States but especially in the

eastern states. It is known by a multi-

tude of common names including

whiteman's foot, buckhorn, ribgrass,

jack straw, lamb's tongue and hen

plant.

There are several familiar species

of plantain but all have heavily veined

leaves. The Plantago major, the most

common kind, has ovate shaped

leaves six to eight inches long and

half again that wide.

Plantain is a delicious prepared

green vegetable. Start looking for

plantains when the forsythias bloom.

Pick the leaves when they are about

two inches long and still tender.

Gather plenty because they lose a

good part of bulk in preparation.

To prepare the leaves start at the

base of each leaf and pull out the

strings, or cut them out with sharp

scissors. This is a tedious job but

worth the extra effort. Plantain is

tougher than some other wild greens

so it requires a little more time in the

boiling salt water, approximately 20

minutes.

Besides its value for human con-

sumption, birds eat the seed heads.

From late spring through the summer

gather the spikes, strip off the seeds

and dry them for a few days in the

sun. Wild and tame birds both favor

the seed and will appreciate your

efforts.

Would you please tell me how to stop a nasty person from prowling

around our house every night for several hours spraying everything in-

cluding our bedroom windows with some poison spray even the chicken

house and the well. All of our plant life is just about gone. This has been

going on for several years. If I use the water for coffee or tea I get a very bad

side effect. Thank you.

Please tell me about Fahrenheit and Centigrade.

S. T., Lyons

Zero on the Fahrenheit scale represents the temperature produced by the

mixing of equal weight of snow and common salt.

Boiling point of water, Fahrenheit 212 degrees, Centigrade 100 degrees;

Freezing point of water, Fahrenheit 32 degrees, Centigrade 0 degrees;

Absolute zero, Fahrenheit -459.6 degrees, Centigrade -273.1. To convert

Fahrenheit to Centigrade subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9. To convert Centi-

grade to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5 and add 32. So CRIER'S ALMANAC

Shaw, Rt. 1, Kennesaw 30144 and Joe Young, 3127 Howell Mill Rd., Atlanta 30327 for bunch and one, Rufus Merriman, Rt. 3, Lyons 30436 for purple skins. Both varieties are grown in Louisana. Contact Department of Agriculture, P. O. Box 44302, Capitol Station, Baton Rouge, La. 70804. We understand they are not very good varieties.

Can you tell me how to cure warts on a cow? O. T., Fortson
We answer this one and the mange one all the time. We just aren't allowed to give home remedies as we don't want to hurt anyone or any animal. But, surgery or vaccine done by your local vet will do the trick, according to Dr. John Cobb, State Veterinarian.

I am interested in finding some information regarding the use of black polyethylene as a ground cover in planting. How many mils of thickness are necessary for a ground cover that will hold up for a couple of years?
D. J. Smyrna Gerald Smith, Extension Horticulturist, said standard thickness for mulching purposes is 4 mil. If you want it to last a long tune, it should be covered with one of the organic mulches such as pine bark, pine needles, etc., to shade it. This is due to the fact that ultra violet light rays are the
major cause of decomposition of poly*e*th*ylene plastic.

What is best to plant for cottontails?

T. O., Marietta

Anything. Oats, clover, and rye grass in the fall and peas, beans,

spinach, etc., in the spring.

Can you tell me how corn oil is produced? I presume that it is from the kernel. If so, what part is used, what is done with the rest of the kernel and how many pounds of corn does it take to produce a quart of oil or a pound of margarine? Also, is there some particular species that produces the oil. We once went out, picked a bushel of field corn in the milk stage, boiled it in the wash tub, and had a meal of roasting ears. My record is 18 ears, but no oil oozed out of my ears, I'have never seen a drop of oil on the water in the tub; nor evidence of oil in cooking sweet corn, canned corn or grits.
W.F., Atlanta How long did it take you to think this one up? Have you ever considered entering an eating contest? We mailed you a volume on corn processing but can't reprint here as we would need the whole Bulletin. No one around here over found a diamond in his charcoal bought for cooking either.

I would like some information regarding corn bead plants. I have some corn bead seed to plant. Some people make necklaces of the corn. Is the corn bead poisonous? I would like to grow some and make necklaces for a craft product if they are safe. Please send this information to me.
W. B..Carrol!ton Corn bead seed [Coix lac^vma] are not poisonous and can be planted in the spring. China berries also make nice necklaces.

Cattle Deaths
Due To Weather
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin says the Department of Agriculture is gatting reports of increasing cattle deaths due to cold weather and malnutrition.
"In some cases owners are not able to obtain or do not understand the need for supplemental food to nourish cattle on freeze killed pasture," Irvin said. "We have one report where more than 60 cattle are said to have died from starvation or malnutrition."
The Commissioner said his office is powerless to do anything about such a situation.
"Under state law the only thing we can do is require the owner to properly dispose of the carcasses by burning, rendering or burying," Irvin said, "but such reports add emphasis to the request that President Carter declare Georgia an agriculture disaster area."
The Commissioner said whenever inspectors of the Department learn of such cases they encourage owners to provide supplemental feed for the animals.
