Conversion To
Metric System
- In the late 18th century, French scholars culminated their search for a new system of measurement, one that would be precise and universally standardized. The search resulted in the establishment of the metric system. It was not until December of 1975 that President Gerald Ford signed the "Metric Conversion Act of 1975" and committed the U.S. to begin plans for conversion from our customary system of measurements to the metric system.
All major world powers, with the exception of the United States,
have converted to the metric system, or are in the process of doing so. Only a handful of countries such as Ghana, Jamaica, . Burma, Barbardos and Trinidad and the United States remain outside the mainstream of the metric system. A U.S. tradeoff of its system

of measurements to help insure the success of its future trade relationships is inevitable.
Why is this important to you? The product of one-fourth of U.S. farm acreage goes to markets which are going to be metric, and the units of trade must be provided on the buyer's terms. The European Economic Community will accept products marked only in metric measurements by 1978. The importance of international markets for U.S. agricultural products is growing constantly.
The conversion to the metric system will affect you personally and economically. Habits of a lifetime for most Americans will have to change. In your cupboard you're bound to find products which are "dual dimensioned," that is they have both the metric and customary designations to indicate the amount of product.
Actually, the metric system of (Continued On Page 8)

The top two-thirds of these bulls will be eligible for sale.

For Top Quality Nuts

February and early March is the time to fertilize your pecan trees. Applying fertilizer now is important so that the nutrients have a chance to move down into the root zone before growth starts in the spring.
According to Dr. Ray Livingston, Head of the Extension Horticulture Department, a 10-10-10 fertilizer for yard trees at a ratio of three pounds for every inch of trunk diameter at breast height is desirable. Fertilizer should be spread five feet from the trunk to five feet beyond the shade of the tree when the sun is directly overhead. You can eliminate digging fertilizer holes if you water immediately after spreading.
Nitrogen is the most important element needed during the first flush

Deadline March 1

This Stuart pecan tree has been properly fertilized. Note the bending down and spreading of the branches caused by the heavy crop of nuts. Branches will not be as full with foliage when improperly fertilized..

Jerry Monarch 668Cresthill Aye., NE Atlanta, Georgia 872-6824
Dear Editor: The poem "Grandpa Was A Farmer" in the
BULLETIN was just great; reminded me of my Grampa Flemning of Smyrna; when I was a child. When he came to the house at lunch time after eating, he and my uncles would lay on the grass under a big oak tree to rest before going back.
He always had a big sand pile for us to play and he would recite so many of these kind of poems. One I remember so well:
Pink on the Apple Chicken in the Pie Everbody's happy When the crop's laid by.

Wild ginger is not related to the tropical plant of the same name. It is however, a native source of ginger and has been used for many generations as the main ingredient in homemade gingerbread and ginger cookies.
Wild ginger root has a pleasant flavor and like the true ginger of commerce may be candied. Recipes calling for ginger, however, refer to the tropical variety and quantities required must be doubled or tripled to achieve the right taste if you use wild ginger.
Besides its value as a flavoring agent, wild ginger is reputed to have medicinal qualities. Mountain folk claim it makes an all-purpose tonic, antiseptic and a healing root tea that is a sure cure for stomach gas.
To identify wild ginger, look for two dark green heart-shaped leaves and one or two purple-brown bell-shaped flowers in shady rich woodlands. As soon as spring has officially sprung, wild ginger should be easy to find.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Deadline Near Chicken Cooking Contest

For Food Exhibit
Special invitations have been sent to 720 Caribbean and Latin American buyers to exhibit at the 1977 CARIB-USA Food Exhibit to be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico April 16-18.
The 1976 meeting was attended by several Georgia companies who learned of the increased marketing potential in this area. This year the exhibit will be repeated, but on a much broader scale. Cut-off date for participating is March 4.
Interested companies should immediately contact the International Trade Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture for full information.
Quality Nuts

of growth and to insure good nut production. Trees that are 20 years or older or 20 inches in diameter need at least ten pounds of straight nitrogen.
Besides fertilization, pecan trees should be pruned at this time to remove any damaged or low hanging limbs. These limbs drain the nutrients from higher, more productive branches if not removed.
Pecan expert Dr. Thomas Crocker reminds large grove owners that a leaf analysis and soil test between July and August is essential for sustained nut production. Kits for these tests are available from the county agent's office.
Georgia's pecan crop is estimated at 50 million pounds, three times larger than the next largest producing state. This is the 5th year Georgia has led the nation in pecan production.

flavor enhancer and at least 1/4 cup Mazola corn oil. Ingredients must be exact and nationally available, instructions complete, and total preparation must not exceed 3 hours.
Metric System
(Continued From Page 1) measurement is much simpler than our customary system. It's based on three simple units: the meter for measuring lengths and distances, the liter for volume, and the gram for weights.
The Georgia Metrication Committee seeks to assist the state in developing plans for metric conversion. Its volunteer membership represents business, industry, government, and education. If you would like additional information concerning "metrication", the committee welcomes your inquiry. Call the U.S. Department of Commerce (404) 529-5872 or Robert Collier, Chairman, Georgia Metrication Committee, (404) 424-3728 and remember to "Think Metric".
