Profit Needed
Not Credit
Georgia farmers have had ample credit during recent years due mainly to programs of the Farm Credit Administration, Farmers Home Administration and commercial banks. The Georgia Development Authority is pleased to have a small part in this through the Authority's insured farm real estate program with Georgia Banks.
Frequently we hear that credit is not available for various capital
expenses on the farm. I maintain that credit is available but the problem is that a satisfactory cash flow can not be maintained to pay for the capital investment during its useful life. Too often equipment has worn out before it is paid for. Dairy and beef brood cows are frequently worn out

before they have paid for themselves. Too many real estate loans are made to refinance operating losses. These loans are possible because of inflated land prices.
FARMERS' SHARE MUST BE INCREASED Approximately 3% of the population of the United States feeds all the rest of us along with our allies. The remainder of us are free to follow the vocations we choose. Despite concern over corporate farming, only about one American farm in a thousand is owned by a corporation with more than ten stockholders. Such corporate farms are said to account for 3% of all farm sales. Profits are too low to attract this capital.
CREDIT A TEMPORARY HELP
Credit is a temporary boost, not a cure for the problem. Plans must be made to assure plenty of food with not so much emphasis on cheap food. The cry goes out to feed the hungry. We all agree this must be done but welfare programs are not the

GROSS VALUE OF GEORGIA'S CROPS UP 3 PERCENT ESI 1976

The gross value of production of Georgia's major crops [excluding livestock and poultry] increased by $33.2 million hi 1976. According to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service, the aggregate value of the state's crops amounted to $1,158,625,000 up 3 percent from the 1975 value of $1,125,424,000. The gross value of Georgia's crops have shown an increase for 8 of the last 9 years, with 1975 being the only decrease. It was the third consecutive year when the crop values exceeded the "billion dollar mark". Crops showing less value hi 1976 were tobacco, peanuts, soybeans,
peaches, sweet potatoes, and sorghum. Corn recaptured the top-spot hi value, accounting for 28.3 percent of the
total value. Peanuts, last year's leader, followed in second place.

Tobacco Growers
Hold District Meet
Flue-Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Corporation, the grower organization which administers the price support program for flue-cured tobacco, will hold its 19th annual district meeting for Georgia growers in Alma on February 16, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
A director to represent Georgia growers on Stabilization's Board for a 3-year term, beginning in May of this year will be elected at this meeting.
All flue-cured growers are urged to make every effort to attend the meeting in order to get a better understanding of the problems confronting all segments of the tobacco industry.

Eradication Efforts
For Brucellosis Requires Cooperation
Brucellosis is a contagious and infectious disease of cattle, swine and goats transmissible to all warmblooded animals. It causes a disease known as undulant fever in man, which is a very serious, debilating condition that is very difficult and expensive to treat, and often leaves its victims chronically ill.
The disease has been virtually eliminated from thirty-nine of the fifty states, leaving some eleven Southern states that must be tested and the infection eliminated.
Georgia and Tennessee have been making a great deal of progress during the past three years in identifying infected herds by the testing of all eligible animals moving through salebarns, with prompt quarantining and retesting of infected herds. Due to this progress as well as our geographic location (the easternmost states with heavy infection), the Federal government has made money available to engage in an eradication program that will be successful.
There are some 80 countries that have had a considerable amount of infection disclosed. As a result, all herds in these counties will be tested as rapidly as possible and all herds with infection will be either tested and reactors removed until they are clean, or if the herd is infected to a degree that it is more economical for the owner and the government, an agreement will be made to pay indemnity on the entire herd.
Two counties have been tested, except for approximately 20 herds

Horses,
mules, ponies
for sale
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Watercress is a great food plant. It can be found growing wild in every state in the Union and in almost any season. Although it is more plentiful in warm months, and mild climates (like Georgia used to have) it should be easy to find year around.
Watercress is a cultivated plant gone wild. It is a creeping, floating herb with tiny hair roots growing along the stems. It does have flowers but they are insignificant. Just like other herbs, the taste is stronger when the plant is in bloom.
There are few plants richer in vitamins and minerals required by the body. The plant has the nickname "nose twister" because the leaves have a pungent taste, a taste you will crave once you've had your first watercress salad.
In gathering watercress, do not pull up the whole plant. The parts below the water are tough.
If you can't find watercress growing near you, pull a few stems from another bed and deposit them in your stream. You can also purchase watercress seed from many seed houses. Seed should be soaked overnight so they will sink. Scatter thinly in a running stream from one to six inches deep.

Few Producers
Only four per cent of all Americans are involved in food production. In Yugoslavia, it takes 53 per cent of the population to grow food; in Brazil, 44 per cent.

Eradication Efforts
(Continued From Page 1)
that are yet to be tested. A total of 36 infected herds have been disclosed and fourteen of these were so badly infected that the owners elected to depopulate the herds with Federal indemnity being paid to the owners.
In order to protect our gains, it is going to be necessary to require that all cattle moving from one herd to another be tested before moving, and any cattle moving into the state be isolated, quarantined and a test for brucellosis be conducted in not less than 45 days or more than 60 days. This is an attempt to prevent infection from slipping in behind as it has in the past. Fifteen years ago, Georgia was in good shape, very few infected herds, and then, as the cattle industry expanded, we apparently received a great number of reactor and exposed cattle until we have become one of the "dirty dozen." We don't like the situation and are sure Georgia's farmers like it even less, so we know we can count on your support hi this brucellosis eradication effort, and then maintain a free state by demanding health certificates on new purchases and isolate additions and retest for brucellosis in 45 to 60 days.
Peanut Producers
Vote On Referendum
Georgia peanut producers are urged to mark and return their ballots in order to reestablish their respective marketing orders for another three years. The referendum period for milk producers is January 18th through Feb. 16th.
If you did not receive a ballot, please contact the Commodities Division, Room 326, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta 30334.

My Grandpa was a farmer And a special kind of man He made his living By the sweat of his brow And the work of two calloused hands.
He wasn't a rich land owner. Had to scrape to make ends meet But he had a fine wife. And seven, strong, healthy kids. Who always had plenty to eat.
He began each morning at sunrise And worked til long past sundown, Raising his chickens and pigs, Milking his small herd of cows. And tilling the dark, fertile ground.
Days were long and nights were short; Spring changed quickly to fall, But he'd always take time Each day of the year To thank the good Lord for it all.
Yes, Grandpa was a farmer Made his living from the land, Where he was at peace with himself And at peace with his God And richer than many a man.

Profit Needed

responsibility of the farmer alone. The burden must be shared
by all Americans. Food must be produced at a profit to the producer. The buyers may dispose of it as they see fit, sell or give it away.
NOTHING IS WRONG WITH FARMING PROFIT WELL NOT
CURE Government planners must help remove the inequity in income between farm families and city families with comparable investments. A new look must be taken at a farm land use tax. The ultimate shock to fat Americans will come when we drive our Sports Cars to the grocery store with plenty of money in our pockets but "LO, the grocer has no bread". The farmer has gone broke.
