What Is Christmas?

Number 51

Christmas is holly and mistletoe It's sleighbells that jingle, and sometimes snow It's busy days and sleepy nights
As we look for presents that will express
Our love to each other without excess Of cost, or taste, or uselessness.

*
Christmas is cards and messages It's v\ isits from friends and relatives It's thinking of those of the long ago
And watching those who will follow, so Swiftly and surely, as we leave the scene To the young and handsome, the lithe and lean Who are coming after to improve our world.

Christmas is an orange in the toe of a stocking With nuts and candy and fire logs popping t's good old Santa and prancing reindeer That dance in the minds of our children dear It's waking up early with noise and clatter As they look for the toys that really matter And keep the faith in Santa Claus.

Christmas is the Christ Child, the Prince of Peace Who lived and died to bring release From war and hatred and fear and greed That mar our lives and point man's need For love and Beauty and sacrifice For brotherhood and mutual aid To enjoy the beautiful earth God made.

Christmas is turkey and cranberry sauce With oyster dressing and never a loss For Waldorf salad, and candied yams And the fine aroma of well cooked hams With chocolate cake and sweet ambrosia You eat 'till you're full and groan with joy Wishing for the stomach of a little boy.

The world is better, I know it is so! Christ came not in vain and we must go Into another year with joy and hope To work, to give, and try to cope With the evils at hand, big or small, 'Till the world can know that Love conquers all And Christmas will come again and again.

Merry Christmas

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Wednesday, December21,1977

Y
Dear Editor: Your paper has become so interesting we now read
it like a newspaper and that's what is so interesting. May I make a request and I feel others would benefit from this also. I have saved little bits of grease here and there and have gallons now. I have forgotten how we use to make soap. My granny used wood ashes and I don't have these. Would love to get letters on this. There's a great waste in our grease pot and many would benefit from knowledge on soap making. Please tell me how to make it, perfume it and make it for baby's bath.
Mrs. L. W. Kennedy Routes, Box 16 Clarkesville, Ga. 30523
Dear Editor: I would like to know the uses for wild cucumber
bark. I see it advertised frequently in the BULLETIN but have never read anything about how it is used.

Farmer Protest Tractorcade A Success

Pressf/me, Thursday, December 15

Saturday, December 10, 1977, was a historic day in Georgia and the nation as thousands of farmers and tractors gathered at the state Capitol in Atlanta to demonstrate their protest of low farm prices. Although at press time, the effects of the strike were not known, [the BULLETIN goes to press Friday morning early prior to each Wednesday's publication] the protest was determined a great success with the tractorcade into Atlanta extending

more than 35 miles. The protest was peaceful and well organized, arousing the concern of every American in every walk of life. Picture one: tractors approach downtown Atlanta and Capitol area. Picture two: farmers and tractors arrive at state Capitol hi sub-freezing weather. Picture three: Tommy Irvin participates hi tractorcade as a north Georgia farmer. Picture four: thousands crowd at Capitol steps to hear speeches and statements from farmers throughout the state.

Christmas Traditions

The presents brought to the Christ Child were of great value: gold for kingship, frankincense for holiness and myrrh for the suffering the Christ Child would endure in His life on earth.
The frankincense tree produces a resin which is acclaimed to be the finest burning incense in the world. The name frankincense is derived from the word meaning "free-lighting." For many centuries, frankincense was the principal item for trade among Mediterranean countries.
The tree itself is native to the mideast. It is a beautiful tree with pink star-shaped flowers and bright green leaves similar to the mountain ash. The wood is very hard and is used for many purposes.
The other sacred plant product was myrrh which is also native to the mideast and coastal Red Sea. Myrrh grows in a bush and produces a large trunk with knotty branches. Along the thin bark, small leaves grow in clusters. When the bark is cut, a yellowish, oily liquid flows but solidifies into brownish granules with a balsamic odor and bitter aromatic taste.
Myrrh was used as a salve in the purification of the dead. The holy anointing oil was used in Tabernacle ceremonies to prepare the body for religious rites.
Myrrh has also been used to identify a fragrant wild herb commonly called sweet cicely (Myrrhis odorata.) This plant though is not the myrrh brought by the wise men according to Biblical authorities.

Make Happy Memories

Several weeks ago we asked our readers to share with us their Christmas traditions, family memories and holiday customs. Our mail box has since overflowed with letters and cards telling about Christmases of long ago, and family traditions that have been carried on for many years. We would like to share some of these with you.

We cut our tree, string popcorn, put a wreath on the door made of pine cones and nuts from the farm and bake cakes.
