4-H Serves
Youth and You
As we merge with our country's third century, it is evident to each of us that the youth of our first two centuries had fewer variables to consider when deciding about then1 goals and aspirations for adult life.
In our country's first century, a young person could theorize, "The sky's the limit!", and today, as we witness the tip of the iceberg of our country's third century, we can knowingly go far beyond our earth's sky. Where are the limits? What are the options? What lies ahead for me? These are the questions that can be more easily answered when the choices, the electives, the possibilities are better understood by the explorer of life's work and leisure.
The 4-H program today recognizes that young people want to be productive citizens, they want to be intimately involved in decisions that affect them.
No single Cooperative Extension Service concept or program is more widely known or recognized than 4H. Four-H is a distinctively

American non-formal educational, character and skills building youth organization. It is keyed to the development of individual boys and girls, so they may contribute responsibly wherever they live. It lays a broad, firm base for a lifetime of personal growth.
Four-H is effective because its educational services are relevant to youth's needs. Through plain, individual hard work, 4-H helps guide young people toward meaningful goals goals they set for themselves. Some of their goals are never attained; some are interrupted; some are changed in significance. Yet the search and increasing ability of their minds and hands are our state's and nation's real base for continuing renewal.
Georgia has 161,282 youth organized in 4,608 4-H Clubs throughout the state. Another 43,220 youth are enrolled in the 4-H Expanded Nutrition Program for a grand total of 204,502 youth involved in some phase of 4-H. Of this

Farmers Must Report

Farmers' Protest

'77 Crop Acreages

Moves To Capitol

All farmers who have not already reported their 1977 planted acreag-
es to the local county ASCS office are urged to do so as soon as possi-
ble. The date by which producers
must report their normal crop acreages (corn, barley, sorghum, wheat,
cotton, oats, rye and soybeans] has been extended to January 20, 1978.
Reporting 1977 planted acreage is
most important for producers as it will provide the basis for benefits such as drought assistance avail-
able to producers for the next four years.
hi the past program benefits and set-aside emergency crop programs
have been based on allotments. The new farm bill has eliminated these allotments and program benefits will
be based on the total normal crop acreage (NCA) as established by the producer's planted acreage in 1977.

Last week as the F&C MARKET BULLETIN went to press tractors and farmers from throughout the state were moving into Atlanta for their December 10 demonstration drive to the State Capitol. Upon request, Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin had provided the Atlanta State Farmers' Market facilities, parking, meeting, sleeping and rest rooms, for one gathering point for the massive tractorcade. Irvin was making plans to participate in the demonstration as a farmer with his home group of North Georgia farmers. (See next week's BULLETIN for additional protest coverage.)

SBA Disaster Payments

8115 for $797.3 million 5540 for $277.4 mllion 2783 for $ 76.7 million

Farmers are reminded that physical disaster loan applications will be accepted through December
30 at the Georgia District Office, 1720 Peachtree Street, NW, Atlanta
30309. Applications from farm-related businesses for economic injury
disaster loans will be accepted through July 31, 1978. The toll-free number is 1-800-282-0411.

Pigeon, Dove Meet

The Greater Atlanta Pigeon and
Dove Club will hold its annual show January 7, 8, 1978, at the Atlanta Farmers Market.
Fancy breeds of pigeons and
doves from several states will be entered. Entry fee is $1.25 per bird.
Mail all entries and fees to Mrs. Pat Mosley, Box 153, Clarkston 30021.

by Dec. 26. The public is encouraged to attend.

Feed Grain Set Asides Insufficient

The announced 10 percent acreage set-aside for American feed grains is

not enough, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.

"If farmers are to escape the low price pit which has trapped them in an

overabundance of feed grains, we need a 20 percent acreage set-aside,"

Irvin said.

The U. S. Department of Agricul-

ture has announced a 10 percent

set-aside of feed grain acreage next

Stockdogs will be advertised in the MARKET BULLETIN on January 11. Deadline for this issue is January 4. Please include dog's breeding and special training or ability that qualifies the animal as a stockdog. Notices are limited to 20 words or less.

year in an effort to bring supply in h'ne with demand. Such a set-aside is permissable under the new farm law.
Commissioner Irvin said the prevailing low prices for corn, wheat, soybeans and other feed or cereal grains are the primary cause of farmer unrest and the major spur to the present tractorcade protests.
Irvin said he strongly supported the protests to focus attention on the plight of the small farmer.
"Several years ago when Russia and other countries wound up with grain crop failures and made large

Dear Editor: I also have a great way to grate coconut. Crack,
drain and peel the coconut saving the milk. Slice coconut about the size of shoe strings. Put milk in blender with 1 cup of sliced coconut, grate until fine. Take out and put in colander until well drained. Put milk back in blender with another cup of coconut and grate. Do this until all is grated. Then put all in colander and drain well. If this doesn't drain enough, squeeze out with hands.
Mrs. Ruthell Earwood Route 1 Fairmount, Ga. 30139 (Editor's note: The Clayton County Home Economists also gives these helpful hints for preparing coconut: pierce the three eyes and pour out the milk. Put coconut into 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Let cool and break. Meat will come out much more easily when prepared this way. Also, coconut grates easily if you freeze it first.)

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

For a parasitic plant that bears no flowers, has no aroma and must be gathered with difficulty, mistletoe has done all right for itself. It has achieved notoriety in many cultures throughout the world and is considered an essential to the holiday season.
In the south, collecting mistletoe is part of the Christmas tradition. It is considered great sport to shoot mistletoe out of trees and the best marksman who brings home the most mistletoe is allowed the privilege of hanging it over the door and collect-
ing the first kiss beneath it. Ladies kissed under the mistletoe
were considered lucky; those who missed their chance were destined to remain husbandless for another year.
Early farmers believed mistletoe would protect their cattle from disease so they hung boughs of it over their stable doors.
Mistletoe berries are poisonous but they do contain medicinal properties that have been refined into a drug used to reduce blood pressure. Don't mess around with mistletoe though as a home remedy. Without proper usage it can be deadly.
Pick Firewood Carefully
For Your Specific Needs
A crackling fire in the fireplace does more than provide a thrifty alternative to modern heating systems. It makes a room cozy, friendly and inviting something a radiator just can't do.
The kind of fire you have depends on the type of wood you choose. Softwoods like pine, spruce and fir are easy to ignite because they contain more resin than other woods. They burn rapidly with a hot flame and are just right for the quick fire that burns out before you go to bed or leave home.
For a longer lasting fire, use hardwoods such as ash, beech, birch, maple and oak. These woods burn less vigorously and with a shorter flame. Oak gives the most uniform and shortest flame and will produce steady glowing coals. Several oak logs burning in the grate will produce a steady flame for many hours.
Aroma is best derived from fruit and nut trees such as apple, cherry, hickory and pecan. Their smoke generally resembles the fragrance of the tree's fruit. Wood from fruit and nut trees is usually more expensive than other woods but they provide a terrific aroma and are steady producers of flame.
By mixing softwoods and hardwoods you can achieve an easily-ignited and long-lasting fire. The heat that a fireplace produces depends on the concentration of woody material, resin, water and ash. Since woods are of different compositions, they ignite at different temperatures and give off different heat values.
The best way to lay a fire is to place two good size logs on the iron grate or fire basket and lay tinder such as dry paper between them. Place a small handful of dry twigs or

ONE PIECE PATTERN

FOR BEAUTIFUL QUILT

One pattern piece is all that's required to make Grandmother's Flower Garden - an old fashioned
quilt which is easy to assemble, cut, and quilt. It is also known as the "merry-go-round", and "Martha Washington's garden of flowers".
Cut the master pattern from a plastic coffee can lid so the points can't wear down as you trace the shape on the fabric. Outline the pattern on the wrong side of the material and cut it out. Save steps by doubling thicknesses and cutting out several quilt pieces at one time.

purchases from this country, the American farmer was urged to go all out on production and now that he has, he has been left high and dry," Irvin said.
The Commissioner said the feed grain price problem was only one of the problems plaguing protesting farmers. He added that inflation, along with American foreign policy practices, all combine to create unhappiness in rural communities.
"The very thought of lending other nations money to develop their agricultural potential and compete directly with our farmers on the world market is extremely obnoxious to me," the Commissioner said. "We had better guard our ability to produce food and use this ability to trade advantageously with those countries who have products or natural resources we need," he added.
split softwood kindling above this. Then place dry logs over this base. Generally no more than four logs are needed to make a good fire.
Ashes should only be left to accumulate within an inch or two at the bottom of the grate. A greater accumulation can ruin andirons and block the flow of air to the base.

number, 18 percent of the members live on farms; 60 percent live in rural non-farm areas; and 22 percent live in urban or suburban
areas. Georgia 4-H members are enrolled
in 362,483 projects valued at more than $16,000,000. The most popular projects are leadership, food and nutrition, clothing, home economics, woodworking and home repair, wildlife conservation, dog care and training, housing and equipment, recreation, horse and pony, animal science, and small engines.
Camping continues to play an important role in the 4-H program. Four camps are operated by the Cooperative Extension Service. This year more than 28,000 youth attended educational, recreational and inspirational activities offered at 4-H camp. Speciality camps are offered in animal science, horse science, community pride, communications, forestry, ecology, wildlife, and leadership.
Judging activities are extremely popular. The real purpose of judging activities is to teach 4-H boys and girls how to make decisions and then to verbally explain those decisions. This year 3,038 4-H members participated in activities offered in livestock, dairy, poultry, horse, and
land judging. Out-of-state travel is an integral
part of the 4-H program. Nine 4-H members participated in international exchanges; forty-eight delegates attended National 4-H Congress in Chicago; thirty-two won out-of-state trips in judging events; 90 delegates attended National 4-H Conference in Washington, B.C. Because of our historic tie with our Georgia School System, scholarship is not neglected in 4-H. This year 4H members earned and were awarded $57,084 in college scholarships to assist them with their plans for higher education.
Participation in the Georgia 4-H program is voluntary and open to all interested boys and girls regardless of race, color, creed or national origin. They must be between the ages of nine and nineteen, agree to the principles of 4-H, and reside where professional Extension personnel and volunteer leaders are available to conduct the program.
If you are now a 4-H member... congratulations, and work even harder this year. If you do not presently belong to a 4-H club, contact your local county extension agent. The phone is listed under county government in your local telephone directory. 4-H is good for youth and you.
