All Georgians
Let's hear it again for agriculture -- Georgia's largest industry, which generates more than 11 billion dol lars annually to our state's economy. This, of course, includes the pro duction, processing and distribution of all agricultural products. We call this diversified industry - agri business.
Agribusiness is promoted and represented strongly by an organ
ization known as the Georgia Agri business Council. This is a state wide, chartered, non-profit, mem bership organ ization with head quarters on Cap itol Hill in Atlan ta. The org anization consists of a full-time pro fessional staff, 28 directors and a

statewide membership representing all segments ..pf agriculture and every area of Georgia.
The Georgia Agribusiness Council was created approximately eleven years ago at the recommendation of the Agricultural Alumni Association of the University of Georgia.
The GAC program includes: agribusiness development, legis lative affairs, advertising and public relations, program development, membership services and financial development. The newest committee is agricultural financing, for the pur pose of establishing credit and cap ital for expansion of agribusiness in dustries.
The Georgia Agribusiness Cou ncil invites all agriculturally-related firms and organizations to join its ef forts to assure that Georgia will de velop into the Agribusiness state of the Southeast.
Our state has 70,000 farms with four to five percent of our population in actual farm production. One far mer today produces enough food for 56 others. Only 15 to 18% of our dis posable income is spent on food. If our farmers can continue to incre ase production, reduce operating costs, and develop effective market-

New Pecan Harvester

For Small Orchards
A much-needed inexpensive pecan harvester for orchards of five to twenty-five acres has been deve loped and tested by agricultural engineers. The harvester driven by a garden-size tractor will sweep up pecans in a 40-inch wide path at the rate of 1/3 acre per hour.
The harvester was developed at the Southeastern Fruit and Tree Nut Research Laboratory in Byron by Donald Peterson and Gordon Monroe. It is expected to be a valu able economic aid to small pecan
farmers. Pecan recovery is better than 90

Growing Christmas Trees Can Be Profitable In Ga.

More and more Christmas trees are being grown in Georgia. Our favor able growing conditions, lower shipping costs and demand for fresh trees have prompted many farmers to devote more acreage to Christmas tree pro
duction.

Turner Davis, Assistant Professor and Registered Forester, who prepared the article on Georgia Christmas trees, has also provided us with planting, growing and pruning information for Christmas trees. If you would like this material, please let us know.

Growing Christmas trees can be profitable and rewarding if good cultural practices are followed. Most failures come when too many trees are planted with not enough labor or knowledge in production
procedures. It is best to start small and in
crease production as procedures are learned. Successful growers usually plant some trees each winter and plan well ahead, having a number of age groups when sales begin. When a good market is estab lished, the grower must have trees getting large enough to sell each
year. The area of the state will deter
mine the species to grow. In the mountains, white pine, Virginia pine, some varieties of spruce and some varieties of Scotch pine can be
grown. Virginia pine, red cedar and
white pine are best for the Piedmont

Virginia pines produce a saleable Christmas tree in 4 to 5 years but require more shearing than other Christmas tree species.

The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

MILK IS BIG
How big is America's dairy industry? Every day, ac cording to Extension Service specialists, milk is produced by about 11 million cows on nearly 300,000 farms. Every other day, this milk is picked up by about 20,000 trucks and moved to 1,600 bottling plants or 3,000 dairy product manufacturing plants. Another 20,000 trucks distribute milk and milk products, and ultimately some 50,000 retail outlets sell the milk to you -- the consumer.

Flame violets are correctly known as Episcias and are native to southern Mexico, Brazil and parts of the West Indies. The name Episcia is derived from the Greek word meaning shaded and in their natural environment, these plants grow in shaded places.
As members of the violet family their culture is similar to other violets. However, when grown indoors they prefer a little more light. If grown only for foliage a north window will provide sufficient light but if you want to enjoy the beautiful pink, scarlet or yellow flowers give them an east or lightly shaded south window.
Flame violets need more than other violets. Keep the soil well moistened at all times but don't drown them. If water accidently gets on the leaves keep the plant out of the sun until dry, otherwise the sparkling drops of water will cause leaf burn.
These are humidity-loving plants. This can be achieved by sufficient watering but you might also mist the plants daily. Because episcias thrive in high humidity they are excellent candidates for terrarium culture.
Flame violets are low-growing plants. They trail and produce new plants which can be pinched off the mother plant and rooted.

As projected by the engineers over a ten year period, the annual overhead cost including the initial cost, interest, maintenance, and repairs of the harvester plus 50 percent of the cost of a tractor, should be about $375.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Entomology Careers Offer Varied Job Opportunities

Insect and pest control is vital to the farmer to prevent losses of crops and revenue. Job opportunities in entomology -- the field which includes these
control measures -- were described best by Dr. T. Don Canerday, entomo logy division chairman at the University of Georgia when he said, "Where there are bugs, you need a good bug man."

And there must be a lot of bugs around because Canerday cites good job market conditions for qualified entomologists. "There are opportunities in all fields of entomo logy and right now it is as good as it has been since I've been in the pro fession."
Why? Canerday likens the in crease in entomology job opportuni ties to the economics of supply and demand. In past years, for example, there was an overflow of entomology people. But that number has since decreased and now there are more jobs than there are people to fill them.
Job Prospects
"The glamour area to work in at the moment is pest management. Also in demand is the generalist (with a good background in all areas of entomology) as well as the spec ialists," says Canerday.
"Another area which is wide open is private consultant work where one goes into business for himself and counsels others on entomologi cal problems. This is an avenue which has not previously been open for our discipline," Canerday comments.
Pest management, according to Canerday, will be the thing to go in to in the future. Pest management specialists are "plant doctors" who specialize in combating various pest harmful to crop production. These few specialists look at the total pest picture, including insects, weeds diseases, and other factors which can cause plant damage.
"More people will be coming into the field in the future," says Canerday. "Of course, there will always be a demand for educators in the field."
It seems that entomologists can be found anywhere there are good growing conditions for crops. "Most entomologists are concentrated in

ing programs, they can help to ex pand our domestic and export mar kets and reap the profits.
Farmers will survive this year's drought. They will need help in get ting better prices for their pro duction. They deserve a fair return on their investments, just as any other firm producing a product or service.
The total agribusiness industry must be protected, nurtured, ex panded and supported. Our citizens need to be more aware of problems of the farmer, expecting food prices to increase just as any other product or service.
The Georgia Agribusiness Coun cil will continue to promote and re present our state's largest industry. We invite all agriculturally-related firms and individuals to join our ef forts in the future.

areas such as the Southeast, Florida and California -- the centers of agricultural importance in the country," explains Canerday. "There is a good correlation in the amount of entomology education in a state and the importance of agricul ture to a state's economy."
Money
So, if the prospects of a good job market after graduation, and a nice, favorable environment to live in doesn't appeal to you, how about the money available in entomology?
"An undergraduate will start in the neighborhood of $9-12,000," says Canerday. "People with masters degrees start at about $1218,000, and Ph.D.'s are variable in the $18-20,000 range.
"People who have good qualifica tions and who don't restrict them selves to a very specialized location in which they want to work have no problem finding a job," states Canerday. "People going into edu cation will, of course, have to have a masters or Ph.D. degree. Industry puts some less demand on advanced degrees."
Trees

and Middle Georgia area. Virginia pine and red cedar do best in the Coastal Plain at present. Other species are being tested and show promise for Georgia.
The profit made hi Christmas tree production varies considerably with the practices followed and species grown. A six to seven foot Virginia pine can be grown in four to five years. It takes about six to seven years for the same size white pine, six years for red cedar and up to ten or more years for blue spruce in the mountains.
The estimated cost for growing one acre of Christmas trees, includ ing labor, supplies and depreciation of equipment should be no more than $1,200.00. There should be a mini mum of 800 good quality trees per acre. This is a cost of $1.50 per tree. The minimum retail price for an average quality tree this year should be $1.25 per linear foot or $8.75 per tree. This would be a gross income of $7,000.00 per acre for the 800 trees, 7 feet tall.
Research has shown that custo mers in Middle Georgia like the choose-and-cut method of buying trees. Growers actually make a greater profit if this method of selling is used, since they have no transportation costs and get retail prices.
There are numerous methods of attracting customers, but the only way to keep them is to grow good trees. Georgia's "choose-and-cut" operators have only one problem in 1977, the demand is much greater than their supply.

Georgia Counties
Numerous, Diverse
Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi River encompassing 37,429,120 acres or 58,483 square miles. Within our boundaries are 159 different counties, some large, some small -- each with an interest ing history and valuable contribution to Georgia agriculture.
BAKERCOUNTY
Baker County is one of the leading peanut producing counties in Georgia with more than 40 million pounds of goobers produced in 1974.
The land in Baker County is particularly suitable for raising pea nuts as well as cotton, corn, pecans. The land is mostly loamy sand and sand and the freeze free growing se ason lasts an average of 250 days per year.
Latest statistics indicate that 229 farms are located in Baker County and of the 277,264 acres within county boundaries 154,375 of those are devoted to farming, which includes cattle and swine production as well as crops.
Baker County was the 61st county in Georgia. It was created December 12, 1825 and included Dougherty, Mitchell and a part of Miller county. The county was named for Colonel John Baker, a patriot of the Revolu tionary War and 1775 member of Congress. The County seat is Newton, named for Sergeant John Newton, another Revolutionary War hero.
SUNSET ON THE FARM The sun was setting beyond the

shadows falling low. Daddy still had work to do,
before to bed he would go. But when work was over, he would
