Counting Blessings
Learning to count our blessings is often the hardest lesson of all.
This past year our farmers have had very little to be thankful for. Th-
ere have been few, if any, "bountiful" harvests.
Beset with problems of cold, drought, insects, inflated costs and low profits, the farmer has had to look hard for what he can call a blessing. Financial problems due to crop losses have left many in a state of economic disaster with little or no money for life's necessities, much less to pay debts and rebuild for next year. The beauracratic red tape surrounding federal disaster loan payments has been like another slap in the face. To top it all, it is often apparent that government officials and the general public are not aware or do not care enough about the farmers' plight. While thinking and worrying about these problems Sunday morning, I received word that shocked me beyond daily cares and worries. The Toccoa Dam at Kelley Barnes Lake had broken and a 30 foot wall of water had swept through Toccoa College killing men, women, and children in its path. This was a place I knew. I grew up fishing in that lake and some of the Bible school students were friends of mine and my family. Several of the school's students attended our church. As the death toll mounted and the reality became more dreadful, I began to ponder life's real problems and its blessings. It was like putting things back in the proper perspective. Not since the Winecoff Hotel fire or the Gainesville tornado, 30-40 years ago, has our state been hit with such a disaster. This one is more real to me. It's in my home community. We have learned a lot this year. Man has not mastered control of nature. A drought or a flood can be devistating. And yet, man has learned and continues to care. We do still care for each other and we are our brother's keeper. Two volunteer firemen were lost while checking the

State Bank Dept. SBA Officials Promise

Offers Assistance Loan Payment Speed-up

On Farmer Loans
The Georgia Department of Agriculture and the State Banking Department are coordinating efforts to advise and counsel with bankers and farmers while awaiting federal farm disaster loans.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said last week he has talked with State Banking Commissioner Jack Dunn and they are coordinating their efforts in every way possible to help rural bankers, many of whom face problems in servicing farmer accounts.
Normally at this time of year, many farmer notes become due and the red tape that has held up disaster loans has created collection problems for many small banks.
Efforts are being coordinated to help bankers deal with these problems properly while continuing banking service to their farmer clients and protecting the interest of other banking customers.

Christmas Traditions Make Family Memories

Congress approved a new 1.4 billion dollar appropriation bill for SBA loans last Friday. The SBA loan production figures in Georgia at the close of business Tuesday, November 8, were:

Some people make a family outing of cutting their own Christmas tree, others bake cakes and cookies by the dozens. In many families, each member has his own homemade Christmas tree ornament while in other households garlands of red and green streamers stretch across the living room with a red paper bell in the middle.
Long ago, an apple, orange and peppermint stick were the best treat you could expect while other children placed empty shoeboxes under the Christmas tree in hopes that Santa would fill the boxes with surprises.

One of the biggest problems the SBA has had here in Georgia is that of securing experienced people with a knowledge of agriculture to help process loan applications according to Deputy Secretary of Agriculture John White in Washington. Efforts are underway to secure the services of some 50 people this week. Some of these will probably come from the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation and some retired agricultural specialists may be employed temporarily to help with this workload.
The Farmers Home Administration, which is also making disaster loans to farmers, has approved 960 loans totaling in excess of $78 million and has actually closed 262 of these

New Idea In Farming - - Worms

Growing earthworms has captured the interest of thousands of potential worm farmers in Georgia. Because of the great enthusiasm, Fort Valley State College has devoted a portion of its study to earthworm farming: how-to-do-it, the requirements, and most importantly, the potential market.
GROWING WORMS
The "Red Wiggler" or "Red hybrid" is the most popular earthworm farmed in the U.S. They are easy to-raise and multiply in large numbers in any moist, neutral soil medium containing approximately one-third decayed organic matter such as peat moss, manure, leaf compost, peanut hulls and other plant by-products.
For a beginner, a container such as an old galvanized tub two feet in diameter and ten inches deep could be used to produce about 5,000 fishing-size worms a year starting with 100-200 worms. For large

volume production, long rectangular beds of convenient width constructed of concrete blocks or lumber on the ground are more practical. The sides of the bed do not need to be higher than ten inches.
Moisture content of the medium is very critical; it should be kept very wet at all times but not to the point of being soggy. Therefore, frequent watering and good drainage must be provided. Shade of some sort will help control the moisture content of the bed.
The worms may be fed a variety of feeds, such as corn meal, broiler chick mash, fresh manure, etc. Frequent but light applications of feed should be practiced to protect against souring and excessive heating.

Pecans are native American trees which produce delicious sweet nuts. Pecan trees were first found growing in the southeastern portion of the United States and parts of Mexico. They are easy to grow and bear as early as three or four years.
They are predominately grown in, the South with Georgia being the leading pecan producer in the nation four out of five years.
Pecans are in the same family as hickory trees and like hickorys they are large, branching trees reaching heights of 100 feet or more. The leaves are finely toothed and have a pungent odor if bruised.
On young trees, the bark of pecans is smooth but as they get older the bark becomes deeply ridged.
The brown-shelled nut is wrapped in a husk which usually splits and falls away from the nut before harvest time. If the husk does not break away, the nuts are usually defective.
After gathering fresh nuts, store in the shell approximately two weeks before cracking to improve taste. After shelling, use nuts within a couple of months. Freeze unused nuts to prevent them from turning rancid.

growers since fishworm farming is one of the fastest growing farm enterprises in the U. S. Since the number of fishworms used in the U. S. each year are not available, the size of the total market is unknown.
Let us assume that each of the 230 million persons in the U. S. used 100 fishworms annually. The market would be 23 billion worms. Using research yield data from Fort Valley State College of 100 tons or 100 million worms per year/acre surface area, the 23 billion worms could be produced on 230 acres of worm beds. It can also be translated to mean that 50,000 backyard fishworm farmers having 200 square feet of worm beds would be able to supply the assumed 23 billion worm market. As you can see, the fishworm market can easily become flooded and may already be at this point in some areas.
OTHER USES
Earthworms may be used to help dispose of large quantities of organic waste, such as animal wastes, garbage, pulp sludge, etc. A successful operation of this type would produce tons of surplus worms that may be released into the fishworm market.
Worms can also be used as protein supplement for animals. The five earthworm is approximately 10 percent protein (60 percent protein on the dry matter basis). If worms could be grown, in large quantities on organic wastes and processed into a protein supplement, similar to soybean meal, and fish meal, economically, it could become a marketable product.
However, at the present retail market price of approximately $5.00 per pound of worms, a pound of dried earthworms containing 60 percent protein would cost $25.00 per pound.

working on an automated system of raising earthworms for use as a protein supplement for livestock, poultry and aquatic animals. The system uses liquified animal waste as the sole source of feed to raise the worms. The system uses a special worm bed that has good drainage and is designed to facilitate the testing of a large mechanical harvester prototype, presently under construction. It is hoped that this system will provide a means of producing worms in large quantities at economical cost.
Earthworms are found in moist soils throughout the world. They are found in large numbers in soils that provide the right combination of environmental growth factors: moisture, nutrients, temperature and pH. Earthworm (fishworm} farming is similar to truck crop farming in that common sense, hard work and experience are needed in production and marketing.
