Seed Insure
Continuing Life
Seeds are many things. Above all else, they are a way of survival of their species. Seeds are wealth; they are beauty; they are a symbol of beginnings. Everything about seeds their numbers and forms and structures - has a bearing on their main purpose, to insure continuing life. One of the most important services performed in agriculture today is the assurance of a continuing supply of high quality seed of adapted varieties to the producer of crops.
The farmer produces our food and fiber. Of all the costly steps that
go into the preparation for crop production, probably the most important single act performed by the farmer is to procure the best seed possible for the crop he is to plant. The seed industry has a responsibility to see that farmers have

plenty of clean seed of guaranteed purity, germination, known origin and suitable heredity to perform in the areas of distribution. The standards have risen through the years, along with State and Federal seed laws, so that any reliable firm would decline to market seed that will not assure the quality needed.
A prominent businessman once said "I would no more want to be in a business without a trade association than I would want to live in a community without a church. The church sets up the moral environment in which we live and raise our families; the trade association provides the ethical, economic setting in which we run our business. As a result of my association membership I have made friends I might not otherwise have met and I have a better understanding of my industry and its importance to the national economy."
The Georgia Seedsmen's Association voting membership is made up of Producers, Processors, Distributors and Retailers in the seed industry such as chemicals, fertilizers,

Milk Agreement
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has served notice on State of Alabama Officals that he is cancelling the reciprocal agreement signed with them for the free-flow of milk and milk products across the Georgia-Alabama state line. An Alabama handler shipped illegal milk to the Borden Company at Macon, Georgia.
The milk did not comply with the agreement on procedures outlined in the reciprocal agreement. The procedures are necessary to provide the required health protection to the consumer of Georgia.
Handicraft Issue
The special handicraft edition of the MARKET BULLETIN will be published on November 23. Deadline for notices is November 11. Regulations for handicrafts will be relaxed to include ornamental and gift items not regularly published.
All notices should include an affidavit stating that the item was made by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale.

For 1978 Soybeans

Liming acid soils is a fundamental principle in soybean production. The optimum pH for maximum soybean yields is 6.0 to 6.5. To determine the pH level of a soil, a soil sample should be taken from random locations within the field and sent to the Soil Test and Plant Analysis Laboratory located in Athens. This service made available through the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service is free to all Georgia residents. A soil sample bag can be obtained at the Extension Agent's office located in each county.

Chester White Breeders

Meet In Statesboro
Chester White Breeders throughout the United States will meet in Statesboro for the Southeast Winter Spotlight Show scheduled for January 15-17.
The national show will end with a sale of boars, open gilts and bred gilts on Tuesday, January 17.

Acid soils are a major problem to high soybean yields in Georgia. A recent survey of soybean fields show as many as 76 percent of the fields in some areas of the state need lime.
If lime is needed, it should be applied in the fall and mixed into the soil so that it will have time to react in the soil before soybean planting season. It normally takes approximately six months for this reaction to take place. Dolomitic limestone should be used since it also supplies needed magnesium as well as calcium.
Lime should not be applied without a soil test. It is possible to apply too much lime. The time spent obtaining a sample now may be the most valuable time spent for the 1978 soybean season.

Brucellosis Battle Continues:

Strengthened By New Program

An Accelerated Brucellosis Program is currently under way to finish once and for all the job of eradicating Brucellosis in Georgia's dairy and beef cattle.
The Accelerated program started in Georgia in the fall of 1976. It was made possible by USDA's cooperation with the Georgia Department of Agriculture in providing additional funds needed to carry out area testing in counties which have had a high degree of infection. The area testing, compiled with existing screening devices to detect infection, is paying great dividends for Georgia dairymen and cattle producers.

Monies to depopulate heavily infected herds are also available to herd owners where retesting will be time consuming and impractical for various reasons.
In addition to detecting and eradicating the disease from infected herds, the surveillance program has also been tightened. A retesting program to check herds, which cleaned up after the test and slaughter method, six months from the date of quarantine release will assure that latent infection was not left on the premises.
Also, all breeding cattle imported

into the State will be retested after a period of 45 to 60 days. Exceptions to this are cattle received from Certified herds, Qualified herds, or official calfhood vaccinates which are under test age.
The number of cases of undulant fever, brucellosis in humans, has decreased in proportion to reduction of the disease among livestock.
Inspectors from the Georgia Department of Agriculture are concentrating their efforts in areas of Georgia where brucellosis infec-

Figures Reveal
Farmers' Plight
With SBA Loans
In the October 26 MARKET BULLETIN we reported that many Ga. farmers had made application for Small Business Administration loans for drought and disaster relief, but only a very few had received even partial payment.
As the BULLETIN went to press this week the following figures were made available; 16,638 Georgia farmers talked to SBA about disaster relief. 8,073 made application for assistance in the amount of $729 million.
Of these applications, 2,002 have been approved for payment of $98 million.
To date, 222 farmers have received half of their money, with the other half promised at planting time.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Dear Editor: I've found a very easy, safe way to hand grate fresh
coconut. No broken nails or skin off your fingers in your delicious fresh grated coconut. And it is so simple but all the years I've grated by hand I had never heard this.
After I cracked, drained and peeled the coconut, I got out my common ordinary dimestore grater, then I saw my white cotton work gloves and I thought why not try it? So I slipped one on my hand and started to grate. And it worked! I did not break one nail or skin one finger. Now my family can enjoy this delicious threat without Mom having four bandaged fingers.

Staghorn Sumac
In the fall the leaves of the staghorn sumac are especially brilliant and in Georgia the vivid scarlet autumn color is a common sight along roadsides and fields.
The staghorn sumac derives its name from the velvety brown texture of its branches so named because they resemble the downy covering on a deer's antlers.
The Indians and early settlers found many uses for the staghorn sumac. In the fall they crushed and powdered the leaves and mixed them with tobacco for smoking. They made a drink called Indian lemonade from the acid tasting berries. Also by boiling the leaves and twigs they were able to produce a black writing ink.
Of all the native sumacs, the staghorn is the largest. There are however other sumacs which are widely known and widespread, the most infamous being the poison sumac.
Poison sumac and staghorn sumac both have brilliant red leaves in the fall. The leaves, though, are different and with a little attention can be separated without much difficulty. The staghorn leaves are toothed and are silvery below while the poison

variety has smooth margins and lack the silver coloration.
The most noticeable difference though is the difference in berries. The poison variety produces white berries on the female plant while the staghorn has clusters of dark berries covered with reddish-brown hairs.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
HOLIDAY DECORATION WITH NATURAL BEAUTY

Holiday decorations using natural materials are among the most popular and economical way to spruce up your home for fall. Gourds, pine cones, corn shucks and dried nuts lend themselves especially well to fall and winter centerpieces, door decorations and wreaths.
Before you can use these natural materials, however, they must be dried or preserved to insure that your work will not deteriorate after a few days.

PINE CONES

Pine cones are especially
abundant in Georgia and are among the most versatile of our natural materials. Select undamaged cones for decorating. If necessary, cut
from the tree to get a perfect cone. Cones that are sticky with pitch
can be cleaned with a rag dipped in turpentine. Place the cones in the sun and air for a few days. Cones will open fully and stay open only if
they are completely dry. Lay cones on a rack in a
preheated oven, 250 degrees, with the door closed for five minutes. Turn oven off. Leave cones in oven until completely dry. Cool and then spray inside scales and all over with
clear plastic spray.

amount of dye per pound. Soak as directed for cloth but leave in color bath for 10 minutes longer to insure uniform coloration.
To work the shucks, soak in warm water about five minutes then shred
into strips the width desired. Wrap damp shucks in a towel to keep them damp and pliable while working. Wet only the shucks you need. If they are soaked and dried more than
twice they become brittle and if they are left damp too long, they will become speckled with mold.

GOURDS

NUTS
Acorns are also good items to include in fall decorating. Gather the most perfect you can find, then heat them slowly in water to kill plant embryo and insect eggs. Dry slowly.
Other nuts such as peanuts, pecans, and walnuts are very attractive in nut wreaths and can be prepared for use simply by baking in a 250 degree oven for two to three hours.
CORN SHUCKS
Corn shucks are adaptable for many holiday uses. Field corn shucks are the strongest and have the best color; sweet corn shucks lack color and are not as durable. Gather shucks if possible from the field when they are thoroughly dry but before they are damaged by weather.
Use only the soft, fine textured cream colored leaves near the ear. These are the most elastic and pliable. Try to have the shucks as long as possible and of uniform thickness.
Corn shucks can be used in their natural color, bleached or dyed. To bleach, soak the shucks in a mild bleach solution for about 10 minutes. To dye, use any good cloth dye but use twice the designated

Dried gourds lend themselves to decorations and are useful as well. Gourds are ready to harvest when the stem turns brown and the gourd begins to harden. Leaving gourds on the vine through the first frost usually helps cure them.
Wash gourds and dip in solution of household disinfectant. Rinse well and dry. With a drill make a tiny hole in bottom and top beside the stem. Tie a strong cord around stem stubs and hang in a dry airy place until seeds rattle. Wipe off any moisture as it forms. After drying coat with thinned white shellac or apply a thin coat of ordinary floor wax.
If desired, you can cut a hole in the gourd, scrape out the seeds and place in a dry airy place. Shellac to preserve.
Ornamental gourds such as those you purchase at the market should have holes drilled in them. Without this precaution they will rot.
