County Agents
Serve, Teach
The University of Georgia College of Agriculture is divided into three major fields - research, teaching and Extension. Extension is the educational arm of the College of Agriculture. The major areas of emphasis in Extension are agriculture, community and rural development, and youth. Educational programs in all of these areas are carried out in practically every Georgia county. At the county level, the University of Georgia Extension male representative is known as the County Agent.
Over 250 County Agents serve Georgia citizens in many ways. The
County Agents out on the firing line are supported by about 150 State Staff professionals. The State Staffers are highly trained in numerous disciplines, from vet medicine ito landscape design. They provide the ammunition used by the County Agents to conquer local problems. For the purpose of professional

improvement, Georgia County Agents and Specialists have joined together to form the Georgia Association of County Agricultural Agents. In Georgia, this organization has 386 members, and at the present time it is the largest County Agents Association in the United States.
The Georgia Association is probably one of the most active associations in the country. Our Association cooperates with the Georgia Cattleman's Association, the Georgia Pork Producers, and the Georgia Dairyman's Association in recognizing outstanding achievement in these areas.
The GACAA also performs public relations activities for the purpose of promoting Georgia agriculture which is the largest industry in our state, amounting to over 2 billion dollars annually. Sponsorship of public information and professional improvement activities among members

Poultry Research Make A Ga. Novelty

Continues At Tech Usjng p arm prot| UC ts

The poultry industry research program at Georgia Tech's Engineering Experiment Station has been granted a one year extension to continue research projects in energy conservation, waste utilization, solar energy application and mechanization in the poultry industry.
Funds- for the extension were made available by the Georgia General Assembly and are administered through the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
Wastewater treatment research has been added to existing programs this year.
Work currently underway in poultry industry research includes converting chicken manure into methane gas, heating broiler houses with solar energy, improving the methods for packaging chickens for market and recommending ways to save energy in such areas as lighting, ventilation and processing.

The Georgia Farm Bureau and the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commissions are sponsoring a novelty contest to promote the state's agricultural commodities.
Any Georgia agricultural product may be used alone or in combination to construct useful and/or decorative items for the contest. "Nut or seed" pictures, cornshuck crafts and table decorations, are a few samples of novelty items entered in the contest.
Categories of competition are: cotton, feedgrains (corn, soybeans, etc.), forestry, fruits and vegetables, livestock, peanuts, pecans, poultry, tobacco and multicommodity. The multi-commodity category is for novelties that contain or represent three or more of the commodities listed.
Individuals may enter as many novelties as they desire in the district contest. Judging will be

Georgia producers sold at auction 130,578,114 pounds for $150,312,167.82, an average of $115.11 per hundred weight.
Belt wide sales for type 14 markets in Georgia and Florida grossed 169,195,099 pounds for $196,094,704.73, averaging $115.89 per hundred weight. This figure includes 12,666,263 pounds of resale and 1,172,010 pounds produced in South Carolina.
Sales began on July 13 this year, five days later than in 1976. Extreme dry weather caused a slow maturing of the Georgia crop and had an adverse effect on the quality of the leaf.
This year's offerings consisted of a larger percentage of nondescript and no grade tobacco with a corresponding drop in good smoking leaf being produced.
The Georgia-Florida belt had eighteen sets of buyers operating for the first fifteen days (August 4) with nine sets remaining until September 29 and two sets closing out the belt the week of October 3-6.
Growers generally were not happy with new grade standards installed this year by the Agriculture Marketing Service U.S.D.A. on priming and nondescript grades of tobacco which discounted the grades if they

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Wednesday, October 19,1977

Dear Editor:
It was stimulating to see the quilt pattern printed in the MARKET BULLETIN. Even though I have a good quilt pattern collection this picture brought to mind quickly the idea of how to use smaller scraps. Also I sometimes need help with colors which was given as a suggestion to unify the quilt.
I would like to see more patterns printed with suggestions, especially during fall and winter months.

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN
has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later
and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no
jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding
a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse fanners should have had the livestock advertised in their
possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for ad vertisement through the Market
Bulletin should have a negative
coggin test within the past 60 days.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Shiny brown buckeyes have been found in little boy's pockets for years and years. Along with the rabbit's foot, the lucky penney, and the cat's eye marble, the buckeye is a priceless possession to ward off trouble and bring good luck to the holder.
Buckeyes, also known as horse chestnuts, are native to Georgia. The meat of the nut is tempting but must be leached time and time again before they are edible. The Indians used the nutmeats as a starch in their diet but records do not indicate buckeyes being used as a food stuff since that time.
The name buckeye comes from the seed pod which has a light brown scar resembling the partly opened eye of a buck or deer.
Horse chestnuts belong to the Hippocastanacea family. The native american variety is aesculus. The wood of some buckeye trees is suitable for furniture, boxes, and crates. It is a very soft, whitish wood and is easy to whittle.
Tree Seedlings
Now Available
The Georgia Forestry Commission has a good supply of Eastern White, Improved Slash, Slash-High Gum and Virginia pine seedlings available. Hardwoods include catalpa, white and sawtooth oak, red maple, sweetgum and yellow poplar.
Order forms, price lists and additional information are available from your local County Forestry Unit.

County Agents

are major goals in our Association. Recognizing leadership ability and providing awards for outstanding service are ways our Association compliments University objectives. Our Extension Service is constantly driving for excellence in performance both at the county and state level, and the GACAA encourages such excellence.
Growing more food to feed a hungry world, improving our land, and teaching our youth a better way of life, is part of our Extension effort. The Georgia Association of County Agricultural Agents will continue to promote these ideals.
Tobacco
(Continued From Page 1)
contained an excessive amount of sand or dirt and foreign material. Some of these grades had price supports removed completely. . "One significant happening this year was the withdrawal of many of our foreign buyers the week of September 12 when our market prices rose to $1.50 per pound for better grades of leaf. This fact had a very noticeable adverse effect on the rest of our marketing season. "Georgia growers and tobacco leaders know that we cannot afford to permanently lose our export trade and need to take whatever steps are necessary to attract these buyers back to our auction sales in 1978," according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irwin.
