Four-H Builds
Ga.'s Youth
4-H Club is a working, growing, and productive club. It has been that way from its beginning which emphasized learning by doing. Four-H sponsored citizenship activities help build better ciitzens and give 4-H members a chance to develop their unique leadership qualities.
362,483 projects and activities each year offer such a variety of
choices that almost any interest may be met. Each 4-H'er may select those that will develop his own leadership qualities and personal skills.
With Georgia's 161,282 4-H members throughout the state, 4-H effects almost every way of life. Georgia's 4-H program has been very successful this past year. We, as the new State Board of Directors,
(Our guest columnist this week is Jeff
Wheeler, State 4-H President, Route 4, Box
969, Bainbridge, GA. 31717.)________
hope to continue this progress while making the upcoming year even more successful.
The new Georgia 4-H Board of Directors is comprised of: Jeff Wheeler, Decatur County - President; Lori Collins, Peach County - Girls Vice President; Buddy Carter, Marion County - Boys Vice President; and Board Members: Michelle Dickerson - Pike County, Stewart Bowers Walton County, Anita Smith - Crisp County, Chris Cleveland - Hart County, Debbie Lewis - Seminole County.
Georgia's new state board already has begun making big plans and has set high goals for the coming year. One of the main goals is to give each 4-H'er a sense of uniqueness. We want to stress that every person has his or her ideas which they need to express.
Our first state rally will be dealing mainly with individuality. The theme for the rally will be "I've Gotta Be Me." Senior 4-H members throughout the state will attend this rally at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center near Eatonton. They will hopefully be motivated to go back and initiate new ideas in their county 4-H program and to use their own imagination and skills in setting goals for

Help Stop Garbage Dumping

It's Illegal, Ugly, Dangerous

It is against the law to dump garbage anywhere except a legal landfill or garbage facility. Yet hundreds of people throughout the state haul their old appliances, dilapidated furniture and kitchen garbage to isolated places

and dump the garbage on the side of the road.

Beautiful country landscapes soon turn 'nto eyesores and health hazards. The land loses value and the community loses appeal to new residents as well as those who are "stuck" living down the road from a garbage dump.

Georgia Peanut Princess Sheila Murkerson of Cadwell, is all smiles as Southeastern peanut harvest gets into full swing.
Special Edition
The Fall Farmland Edition is coming October 26. Deadline for ads received in the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN Office is October 13. Ads must specify acreage.

Three farmers and three agribusinessmen in the Atlanta area
have been named Agri-Leaders of the Year by the Atlanta Farmers Club.
The winning farmers are Mercer Brown of Route 2, Buchanan; H. N.
Williams, Jr., of Route 1, Glenn, and James A. Dunagan of 2898 Spring Lake Road, Lawrenceville.
The agribusiness winners are H.
Don Williams of Route 1, Aragon; William K. (Pete) Malone of 249
Hickory Ridge Road, Jackson, and Lee Hays of Mansfield.
According to W. B. Land, chairman of the Farmers Club agri-
leader committee, the awards are given annually to promote
agriculture and agribusiness in the Atlanta area by recognizing leaders
in the field.

Garbage waste areas are also breeding areas for flies, rodents and other pests. Dumps create odor problems which are not only repugnant but can be harmful to residential and business areas for miles.
Wild and semi-wild dogs breed in and around garbage dump areas. They feed from the garbage, have their litters in abandoned appliances or furniture and run wild terrorizing and killing small pets, livestock and game animals. They spread disease such as rabies, pseudorabies and brucellosis which can infect farm animals and create danger for the community.
Dumped garbage also can contain poisons and toxins. When it rains, the toxic residue washes into streams and lakes polluting the

Ga. Meat Inspectors Protect You, Serve Packer

The Meat Inspection Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture has a great responsibility to the consumers of our state. This responsibility for cleanliness and good
health is not taken lightly. In fact, the Georgia Meat Inspection Program is equal to or better than the federal program.
However, there are times when the consuming public is unaware of the intentions of the local meat in-
spector and the seriousness of his job. What is clean to the naked eye glancing around the meat market is not necessarily sanitary, safe, or healthy.
The customer cannot see the old meat that might not have been properly cleaned from the cutter the night before. He cannot see the conditions that could or have caused insects and other pests to feel welcome in the cooler and on the counter.
Therefore, when a consumer hears that "good old Joe's" meat

packing facility has been closed by
the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the first reaction may be, "Why did THEY do THAT to HIM?,
He's a good ole guy." The reason THEY (the meat inspectors) did
THA" 'close his packing house) to HIM igood ole Joe) is because THEY

have YOUR best interest and health at heart. Even though Joe is a good ole guy, he hasn't been doing his job of keeping his place sanitary and clean enough to protect the health of his customers.
There may be instances where

Georgia Department of Agriculture meat inspectors worked closely with D. L. Lee and Son of Alma when they enlarged their commercial red meat slaughter and packing house recently. One of the largest such facilities in the state, the Lee's were careful to insure that their new slaughtering facility and chill cooler would comply with state and federal guidelines.

Dear Editor: An easy way to rid your home of roaches use
small empty peanut butter jars, leave small amount of peanut butter on sides and place small amount of molasses in bottom of jar. You will find small and large dead roaches in jar next morning. All will soon disappear.

Dear Editor: For the Editor and others of the best and largest
FARMERS BULLETIN in the South I have seen and
read them all. Am 83 years old and always had chickens. You meet some very nice people.
I sold Georgia their first Bob White quail when they
started in Briarcliff Road. Also sold the State the only pair of solid white deer. I bought them up in Alaska. They had my many birds and fowl sent up to the 1939 New York World Fair for display. Mr. Tom Under was
my friend. Just want you to know I could not live without

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
AH horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

PEAR PRESERVES WITHOUT PEELING

10 Ibs. pears (weigh pears after 1 T. lemon juice

cut off core)

(H desired)

5 Ibs. sugar

Wash pears in cool water. Cut pears off core, without

peeling them Add sugar on top, let stand overnight. Cook

until almost as dark as dark syrup. Stir every few minutes/

don't cook too fast or it will burn. Use thick pan to cook in.

We use to make marmalade with peelings so it's okay to

make preserves as above. Pack in hot sterilized jars, seal

and process 15 minutes in hot water bath at simmering

temp. When jars are cooled if center of lid is up it's not

sealed so take lid off, check jar top for chip place. If chip

ped put in another jar, put new lid on, process 15 minutes

in hot water bath at simmering temp.

Farmers Collect
Peanut Hay
For Winter Feed
More peanut hay is expected to be baled this year than since mechanical harvesting began. Due to dry weather conditions, bermuda hay which constitutes 75 per cent of all baled in the Coastal Plains area, is down by 50 per cent.
Farmers in the peanut belt have decided to claim peanut vines and leaves which constitute a valuable winter feed for cattle - especially breed cows and holdover stock.
The yield of dry peanut hay varies from one-half to 1.5 tons per acre, depending on the variety grown, the distance between rows, stage of lifting and the amount of leaves lost by the plants as a result of leaf spot infestation and handling.
Peanut hay is gathered in two i ways. Vines are mowed before digi ging and dried or hay is made from < dug and thrashed vines and leaves.
Agronomist reminds farmers that i vines are usually scattered over the land for soil improvement. It is thus desirable to follow peanuts with a soil-improvement crop, particularly when the hay is not returned to the soil. Peanuts are considered a soildepleting crop when the entire plants are removed.

their individual project work. Another idea the Board hopes
will develop is the first statewide overnight rally for Junior 4-H'ers. The Board members feel that this could play a vital role in 4-H participation.
Between the years of Junior 4H'ers in the 7th and 8th grades and their first year as Senior 4-H'ers in the 9th grade, a number of good young people drop out. This Junior rally will be conducted mainly to give these 4-H'ers enthusiasm and a reason to remain in 4-H work. Hopefully, they would better understand what 4-H is doing for them now and how it can affect them in the future.
Youth all over the world are seeking unique goals for themselves. 4-H can provide these goals and also a guide to help in achieving them.
Four-H work begins locally with individual project work and progresses to district, state, and national levels with .competition, shcolarships, and the opportunities for leadership development. Four-H'ers set their sights on goals of their choice and receive encouragement and help along the way from other 4H'ers, volunteer leaders, and Extension Agents.
Four-H'ers say 32 very important words at every 4-H event: "I pledge my head to clearer thinking; my heart to greater loyalty; my hands to larger service; and my health to better living - for my club, my community, my country, and my world."
These words symbolize idealism and a positive view toward the future. Coupled with the motto "To Make the Best Better," these phrases exemplify the type of adults 4-H can build from it's members.
Bacon County
Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi River encompassing 37,429,120 acres or 58,483 square miles. Within our boundaries are 159 different counties, some large, some small each with an interesting history and valuable contribution to Georgia agriculture.
Bacon County was created in 1914 and was the 149th county in Georgia. It was named for Senator Augustus O. Bacon and was created from parts of Appling, Pierce and Ware Counties. Its county seat, Alma, was named by taking the first letters from the names of four Georgia capitols: Augusta, Louisville, Milledgeville and Atlanta.
Agriculturally Bacon County produced $16,422,000 in farm
products including more than $5 million from poultry and poultry products. Tobacco, corn and soybeans are the largest agricultural crops in Bacon County.
The 108;207 acres in Bacon County are Middle and Lower Coastal Plain or sand and loamy sand. At last count there were 554 farms averaging about 200 acres each.

Auto Lubricants

Deserve Attention

Although concern has centered on the cost of fuel for automobiles, trucks and tractors, attention must also be given to the type of lubricant used to keep these vehicles running smoothly and performing at their top sfficiency.
Modern day oils are the result of rery sophisticated refining techniques. Additives have been formuiated to act as form suppressants, anti-rusts, anti-sludges and pour point depressants to name only a :ew.
It is important that the informa:ion in the owner's manual be adhered to as much as possible when any engine or moving part squires lubrication. Most of the lewer engines require an oil with an 3E classification and the failure to ise the proper oil could result in /oiding the engine warranty.
ABOUT CHEESE

There is a cheese for just about

3very price and taste. Aged natural

cheeses cost the most, say Extension

service home economists. Process

varieties are medium priced.

'Cheese foods" are the thriftiest of

all. These products often cost 25

^ents a pound less than natural

cheese.

Garbage Dumping
(Continued From Page 1)
water and killing wildlife. Garbage dumps are also
fascinating places for children to poke around for "fun". Fun can result in serious accidents from broken glass, abandoned ice box tragedies, as well as exposure to disease.
LITTER LAW
The state litter law is very specific about dumping garbage, waste and discarded material on private and public property. It specifies that it is against the law and that anyone violating the law is guilty of a
misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine. The judge can also require you to pick up all the garbage dumped in the area prior to that time.
Enforcement of the litter law, however, is a problem. People must actually be caught in the act of dumping garbage before action can be brought against them. Finding stationery, magazine subscriptions and bills with names and addresses is damaging evidence but insufficient for conviction.
Usually the county Sheriffs office is charged with enforcing the litter lav although any law enforcement ofi ;r can take the necessary ar, :"i.
law on the books and a few

people to enforce it, however, are not enough to stop people from dumping garbage. Community organization, survelliance and effort are the only means of controlling the problem.
COMMUNITY EFFORT
An example of community organization is demonstrated by the efforts of the citizens in Woodstock, Cherokee County. After expressing their concern to county officials over a particular dumping ground and learning of the law enforcement difficulty, residents started watching for dumpers and reporting to law enforcement officers. They formed their own "stake-out" squad to improve the community. Fines and clean-up resulted and the "dump" is gone.
Counties are not required by the state to provide landfill or dumpster facilities. Concerned citizens, however, can improve the situation by contacting their county officials and expressing their concern and willingness to cooperate to solve the problem.
You can take the first step in eliminating garbage dumping. Organize your neighbors, watch for the dumper; get his tag number; take his picture; call the law.

Hops are perennial vines cultivated for their scaly, conelike fruit which produces a yeast-type product. This yeast can be used for making things rise such as bread but is more com monly and commercially used to make things ferment such as beer.
There are several types of hops, all members of the mulberry family. Many hops are grown commercially, others for their ornamental or novelty value.
Hop plants are beautiful and suit able for planting on a patio or trellis as a summer screen. They require full sun and constant moisture but will tolerate minimal shade if absolutely necessary. Each plant has a wide spread and grows to an average height of 12 feet.
While they do not twine, they attach themselves by tendrils. Each tendril contains two short stems with a tiny white bloom showing up in summer. When the bloom fades, a paper balloon appears containing three compartments each with a seed. When the pods turn leathery brown it is time for harvest. Other varieties produce conelike fruit.
At this point the pods and seed are made into a yeast cake by combining a mixture of potato water, cornmeal, flour and hops. The cakes are dried and used as you would other yeasts. (The specific instructions on prepar ing the yeast cake seem to be lost to antiquity -- unless one of our readers knows how to do it and will share the information with us.)
Hops are harvested in August and September. They must be harvested just as soon as they ripen because the hops decay quickly once mature.

Cut Farm Energy Costs

-Bu He tin

With Fuel Conservation

Energy costs have nearly doubled in the past ten years and most of this has been within the last three. Because of this increase and the promise that it will continue, farmers have had to assess their entire cost so they can adjust their operations to get the last drop of value out of a gallon of fuel.

Meat Inspectors
(Continued From Page 1) any consumer should be allowed to buy what he wants from whom he wants, regardless. But, in the case of meat and many other food products, the risks of illness and disease are too great and the ability to judge potential health hazards with an untrained eye is almost impossible.
Therefore, the Georgia Department of Agriculture Meat Inspection Division does believe its first responsibility is to protect the consumer. Secondly, however, the inspectors of the division do try to work with and help all meat establishments come within compliance of the Georgia Meat Inspection Law. Most packers work with department inspectors, knowing that better inspection helps them to better serve their customers and to fairly compete with the legitimate packer.
Don't worry about the meat you buy in Georgia. The Georgia Department of Agriculture is there protecting you and your family. Don't worry about "good ole Joe" either. If he will work with the Meat Inspection Division to insure you a safe and healthy meat product, the meat inspector will work with him in assisting his establishment to clean up and fix up to reach quality meat requirements.
Despite the summer drought many home gardeners are reporting mammoth-size produce from their gardens. An example of this is the 9 pound, 8 ounce sweet potato grown by Johnnie Berry, Rt. 1, Covington. Mr. Berry said all his sweet potatoes were extra large this year.
Broiler Contest
Seeks Top Grower
A contest to find the champion broiler grower in Georgia is underway. Official entry forms for the "Broiler Grower of the Year competition are being sent by the Georgia Poultry Federation to each growout operation in the state.
The top grower will be determined on the basis of the nomination and a visit to the nominee's farm.
All nominees must be Georgia residents and forms nominating them for the statewide competition must be completed and submitted to the Georiga Poultry Federation, P.O.B. 763, Gainesville 30501, before November 1, 1977.

USDA figures state that the naton's two and a half million farms use 6.3 billion gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel yearly. In addition, farms consume 173 billion cubic feet of natural gas; 1.5 billion gallons of LP gas and 32.3 billion kilowatthours of electricity in an average year. The amount of energy used by farms is about three percent of all the energy used in the country.
ORCHARD GROWERS
The orchard grower is estimated to use about 5.4 percent of the total U.S. farm energy in producing his crop. Orchard growers divide their share of energy between crop cultivation, fertilization, and pest control.
Soil testing is absolutely necessary for fertilizer conservation. Once you know what the soil needs,
(First in a series of articles on energy con servation in farm operations.)
try to combine the fertilizer operation with another chore. Usually phosphate and potassium may be applied in one application.
To reduce cultivation costs, try strip spraying around trees or along tree rows. A one to two foot strip on each side of a tree can be sprayed
with selective herbicides. This eliminates the need for heavy tillage with a disc.
Pest control spraying and costs can be cut by keeping spray tanks, filters and nozzles clean. Where applicable, use low-volume sprays and minimize spray frequency. Aerial application may be a good alternative.
Maximizing equipment efficiency will cut costs not only for the orchard grower but all farmers as well. Use the right equipment for the job. A 75 horse power gasoline tractor in 500 hours will use about 2675 gallons; a 75 horse power tractor diesel uses 1833 gallons; and an LP gas tractor, 3210 gallons.
Tractor idling is a waste of fuel. If your tractor engine idles 10 minutes a day you are wasting 30 gallons of fuel every year. Leaking carburetors can waste 1/2 to 1 1/2 gallons of fuel per day.
To help determine the best place to make necessary fuel adjustments, keep accurate energy use records. List the job done, type equipment used and the amount of fuel needed to do the job. Energy records will help you determine if changes need to be made in your operation to conserve fuel and energy costs.
Wue Day's Cawing
Mule Day is scheduled for November 5 in Calvary. Festivities begin at 11 A.M. with the mule day parade and will continue through late evening. Farm tours, tobacco spitting, greased pig chasing, soap making and arts and crafts are only a few of the events planned. For information call 912/872-3298, 8723211.

Ga. Receives Money
For Expanded Market
Georgia has been selected to receive federal money for an expanded farmers market project. The funds will be used to expand and establish a specialized inner-city market in Spvannah in addition to the existing market.
The $70,000 designated is to be shared with South Carolina for expanded market facilities in Charles^ ton.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said limited resource .farmers in the six surrounding counties of each market will be encouraged to serve the facilities. The plan is designed to bring limited-resource producers and consumers together in a more accessible innercity market.
