Cotton Farmers
Face Problems
Georgia farmers in general have found little to be encouraged about in 1977 and the state's cotton growers are certainly no exception. It now appears that Georgia farmers will harvest about 6,000 acres more cotton than they did last year, but yields will be sharply reduced due to this year's extreme drought.
Recent USDA estimates indicate that 1977 production in Georgia will
total 150,000 bales compared to 200,000 bales in 1976. The 150,000 bales will come from 240,000 harvested acres, meaning an exIpected average I yield of 300 poun_ ___|ds of lint per acre, be the state's lowest yield in many years. Reduced production of a crop frequently leads to higher prices, thus growers may not suffer income

losses that are too severe even though yields drop substantially. Unfortunately this will not be true for Georgia cotton farmers if they sell their crop on the spot market in 1977.
While production in Georgia is expected to be down 25 percent this year, belt wide production is estimated to total about 13.5 million bales, an increase of 27 percent over the 10.6 million bales grown in 1976. This increased national output is coming at a time when demand from both domestic and international markets is rather weak. Consequently, downward pressure is being put on market prices.
In recent months spot cotton prices have been running about 20 cents (or more) below prices of the corresponding period of last year. Spot prices for 1-1/16 inch strict low middling cotton have averaged between 50 and 55 cents per pound in recent weeks.
Economists with the Georgia Extension Service estimate that the total cost per acre to produce cotton (excluding land) in 1977 was $307. It is estimated that it would cost 51 cents (again excluding land costs) to

The Georgia Experiment Station, Cooperative Extension Service and The Georgia Muscadine Association will jointly sponsor a Field Day for muscadine grape growers at the Georgia Experiment Station, Experiment, Georgia. The program begins at 10:00 a.m., September 20th in the Stuckey Auditorium at the Station.

From Crossbreeding Research

Beef cattle crossbreeding is the subject of a research project which is predicted to benefit everybody from the producer to the consumer.
Seven cattle breeds including Polled Hereford, Limousin, Simmental, Brahman, Angus, Santa Gertrudis and Gelbvieh will be crossbred to gather information on maximum production efficiency.

"If we can produce beef more efficiently, production cost will be reduced and some of this savings will be passed on to the consumer," according to project leader Dr. Larry Benyshek.
Detailed information on the

crossing abilities of the seven breeds will be gathered. Records will be maintained on monthly weights from birth to slaughter and on individual feed efficiency of the steers. Car-

The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdic tion over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publi cation.
All horses offered for advertise ment through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

Jade plants are natives to South Africa but they are among the most popular houseplants in Georgia. For years and years, jade growers have known that jade plants were slow growers and plants well over 50 years were not uncommon.
However, jade plants Crassula argentea can be fast growers and you don't have to wait 50 years for a bushy jade tree several feet tall to decorate your living room.
Researchers have discovered that dry soil and general lack of attention is not the secret to success. Instead, sunlight, fertilizer and water will make your jade plant prosper and grow right before your eyes.
Daily watering of about half a cup of water and weekly applications of fertilizer are recommended. As much as a 20-20-20 blend may be used but other fertilizers work just as well.
Crossbreeding

Sample carcasses from each straightbred and crossbred type will be broken into^fetail cuts for taste panel studies and consumer acceptance studies.
The research will provide new crossbreeding information on three breeds which have not been utilized much in the Southeast Limousin, Simmental and Gelbvieh. These breeds have been in this country less than ten years.
During the next five years, high percentage bulls from these breeds will become available at a price within reach of commercial producers.
Information on the benefits of crossbreeding Angus, Hereford and Shorthorn cattle has become available during the last 20 years. This project should provide information on crossbreeding within the new breeds as well as crossing the new breeds with the domestic breeds already widely produced in the Southeast.

produce a pound of cotton in Georgia this year if average yields were 600 pounds. With 300 pound yields it obviously will cost Georgia farmers WELL over 50 cents for every pound of lint they produce this year. This is serious, especially so when cotton is selling for 50 cents. It now appears
that demand will not improve much in the next few months.
As it seems to be virtually impossible for Georgia farmers to sell their 1977 cotton this fall on the spot market at profitable prices, what should the strategy be for marketing the crop? Highly desirable alternatives do not exist. The best approach may be to put the crop under loan and redeem it when prices rise. Just when a significant price rise will occur is uncertain, but this approach may avoid big losses that would be certain on the spot market.
Decisions relative to planting
cotton in 1978 must be faced soon. It now seems that some type of forward pricing contract should be arranged before planting next year, or maybe any future year. This could either be through hedging if futures prices are favorable, or cash contracting at a price that will provide a reasonable profit. Means must be found to avoid the catastrophic conditions Georgia cotton farmers are currently facing in respect to market prices.

A nursery production short course sponsored by the Cooperative Extension Service will be held at the Rural Development Center, Tifton, September 27 and 28.
The meeting, which is held every other year, is designed to keep Georgia nursery producers up-to-
date in practices relating to both container and field nurserystock production.
Research information concerning diseases, soil mixes, fertilization practices, chemical weed control and cold protection will be presented.
