Better Tobacco
From More Acres
Georgia Tobacco Farmers need more flexibility in their production capabilities if they are to hold poor quality lugs and primings off the market and produce the better
quality tobacco desired by American and foreign markets.
I am more convinced of this than ever before following my annual tour of opening markets this past week. Tobacco farmers grow and market under two allotments, an acreage allotment and a poundage allotment. Under the present acreage allotment farmers have to harvest the lower stock tobacco known as primings and lugs to meet their poundage quotas. This type tobacco doesn't bring too good a price and hurts the farmer's overall acreage price for the season.
It is this tobacco also that winds up in the commodity loan program and makes up most of the 600 million pounds which the government is holding. There is little demand for it and it presents a marketing problem.
It is my thinking that USDA should make acreage allotments more flexible and allow farmers to plant enough acreage to meet their foundage quotas by harvesting only middle and upper stalk tobacco.
During my tour this past week I

Good Horsemanship Increases

Enjoyment for you and Horse

Good horsemanship makes good sense. By following a few guidelines, you can train and manage your horse easier, make him a more content animal, and increase your enjoyment of owning and riding a horse.

Horses should be approached from the left. Never walk or stand behind a horse unannounced; let him know that you are there by speaking to him and placing your hand on him. Otherwise you may get kicked.
Pet a horse by first placing your hand on his shoulder or neck. Do not
dab at the end of his nose. Grasp the reins close to the bit on the left side when leading a horse.
Walk the horse to and from the stable. This prevents him from running home and refusing to leave the stable. Be sure that his saddle blanket or pad is clean and free of dried sweat, hair, caked dirt or any rough places, any of which will cause a sore back.
Mount and dismount from the left side. Make the horse stand until the rider is properly seated in the saddle or has dismounted. Retain the proper tension on the reins. Avoid either tight or dangling reins.
Keep your hands and voice quiet when handling horses. Avoid "clucking," loud laughing or screaming (never scream - no matter how excited or frightened you may be; it will only make matters worse). Never slap a horse with the ends of the reins. All of these are unnecessary and in poor taste.
Warm up the horse gradually. Walk him first, then jog him slowly.
Keep to the right side of the road except when passing and never

allow your horse to wander all over the road. Give right of way courteously. Walk horses across bridges, through underpasses and over pavements and slippery roads. Slow down when making a sharp turn.
Walk the horse when going up or down hill. Running may injure his legs and wind. Do not race horses. When so handled, they form bad habits and may get out of control.
Keep the horse moving when a car passes. If you stop, he may act up or back into the passing vehicle. Anticipate such distractions as cars, stones, paper, trees, bridges,

Blossom End Rot
Ruins Tomatoes
Blossom end rot, a physiological disease whose basic cause is lack of adequate soil moisture, is costly to many tomato growers and disappointing to home gardeners.
The first symptom of rot is a slight water soaked area near the blossom end of the fruit. The lesion soon darkens and enlarges in a constantly widening circle until the fruit begins to ripen.
To control blossom end rot, regulate the moisture supply in the soil. Mulching, which serves to maintain an even level of soil moisture should be used.

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin discusses tobacco marketing farmers on the warehouse sales floor in the center photo and heads the problems with Asst. Secretary of Agriculture Bob Meyer at left, visits with auction line checking tobacco quality and grade in the picture at right.

Several months ago there was a good deal of interest in preserving eggs the old fashioned way. Here is one more of the interesting letters we received on the subject,
Dear Editor: As a child one of the most disliked chores was to insert
my hand into the "water-glass" crock to retrieve an egg or two for my mother.
The American College Dictionary defines waterglass as 'sodium-silicate, esp. a solution of it in water, or a similar preparation of potassium silicate, used to produce a transparent coating on objects in order to preserve them. Also known as liquid glass or soluble glass.'
Funk and Wagnalls says - in addition - 'soluable in hot water, used for preserving eggs; as a facing for walls, etc.'

Sweet
The hot and sweet pepper grown in the United States belong to a completely different group of plants from the black or white pepper used for seasoning. The peppers grown in this country are Capsicum annum which are native to tropical America.
There are many different types of Capsicum peppers but they are generally divided into two distinct groups: the sweet, larger-fruited bell or bull-nose peppers; and the smaller-fruited, hotter and more pungent chili and cayenne peppers.
Sweet peppers are green at maturity but turn red as they ripen. A sweet-flavored variety, the pimiento, is a member of this family and at one time was extensively grown in Georgia.
The more pungent varieties are usually red although they are sometimes green, or yellowishgreen. They tend to have thinner flesh than sweet peppers. Sometimes these peppers are strung, dried andor crushed for later use.
Columbus discovered the Indians using the hot and sweet peppers in their diet when he first toured the Americas. The few samples he took back to Europe with him were quickly accepted and pepper popularity grew. Unlike tomatoes, there seems to have been no unwillingness to try American peppers.
Peppers require more heat and are more sensitive to cold than most common garden plants grown in this country. Peppers not only will be killed just by a light frost but also will fail to thrive if the temperature is between 40 and 60 degrees. At least three months of warm weather are required for good yield on hot and sweet peppers.

Keep the horse under control at all times. If you are riding a runaway horse, try to stop him by sawing the bit back and forth in his mouth so as to break his hold on the bit and his stride. If in an open space, pull one rein hard enough to force him to circle.
Practice firmness with the horse and make him obey your wishes. He will have more respect for you. At the same time, love and understand him and he will reward you with the finest friendship and the grandest sport.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Caring For Houseplants

During Summer Months

House plants need special attention during the hot, dry summer months.
Sunburn and dehydration can take their toll on your beautiful hanging baskets and planters but a little precaution and extra care will help them not only survive but prosper.

Where to Write
For Good Advice
The FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN receives many requests for information which we are more than happy to answer or to refer to the proper agency for answering. However, readers who would like to write direct for this information will find the following list helpful. The list includes sources for those questions most frequently asked:

Plants tend to dry out quicker so they need to be watered more often.
Hanging baskets usually dry out much faster than pots. Clay pots dry out faster than plastic or metal pots. When you do water, apply enough water so that it drips out of the bottom of the pot.
Sunlight will burn plants in no time so make sure the plants are kept in the shade. Sunning house plants is not healthful. If inside, keep light colored or sheer curtains between plants and south or west windows.
Plants grow faster during the summer, so you may have to do some pruning or shaping of your plants. Pruning will make the plants bush
out and be more compact .rather than tall and leggy.
House plants require more fertilizer during the summer. One
teaspoon of a good house plant fertilizer in one gallon of water is an ideal rate. Apply enough per pot so that the water will drip out of the
bottom of the pot. If the plant is actively growing and putting on new leaves and stems, fertilize every two weeks. If the plant is inside, however, once a month is enough.
If the plant is stunted, not growing properly or parts are starting to die, the most common cause are root problems. Knock the plant out of the pot and examine the roots. If the roots are white with a lot of small feeder roots on them, they are healthy but the plant may need a larger pot.
If the roots are gone or are starting to rot, wash as many of the dead roots off as possible and repot the plant in clean sterilized soil and pot. Do not put it back in the same pot or soil.
By taking a few preventive actions and by regularly checking your house plants, you can keep your plants healthy and growing all summer.

FOREST FIRES
The major cause of forest fires in the South is not campers, smokers, or trash burners. It's incendiarism. Extension Service foresters say an incendiary fire is one set intentionally without regard for plant and animal losses. Spite, concealment of crime, irresponsibility, driving out wild game, and controlling ticks, weevils, and snakes are common reasons for incendiary fires.

Don't Refrigerate It's not a good idea to refrigerate eggplant, hard winter squash, and sweet potatoes. These vegetables keep best when stored at 60 degrees, according to Extension Service specialists.

Watermelon Day at the Atlanta State Farmers Market, July 10, was a great success. The largest watermelon [pictured above] at the event was grown by Randy lames from Crisp County. One of the little doggers who entertained at Watermelon Day tries to lift the 121 pound melon which is assumed to be the heaviest melon in Georgia this season.
Better Tobacco
(Continued From Page 1)
spent one day of the tour with under Secretary of Agriculture Robert Meyer with whom I was able to express this idea and discuss it at length. Mr. Meyer was able to get a first hand look at the situation and I am hopeful he will exert some influence in helping us solve the problem of low stalk tobacco.
I was able to discuss this idea with scores of tobacco farmers and all of those I talked to thought the idea deserved serious consideration.
There would be some problems in changing to such a system, naturally. There always is with anything new and untried. We would have to give careful consideration to the cost of production on the extra acres to insure we could more than make it up in the market place with better priced tobacco. There would also be the problem of bootleg tobacco and a few growers that would try to take advantage of the system.
But I believe and most of the farmers I talked to believe it would give them the flexibility to produce the better quality desired by American and foreign markets. It should also eliminate practically all the tobacco going into the commodity loan program.
