Canners, Freezers
Organize Efforts
The Southeastern Food Canners and Freezers Association, a relatively new organization, is in its third year of operation. The Association includes freezers as well as canners. Members of the Association are food processors in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The associate members are suppliers to the members. Through benefits of shared knowledge in handling problems of the industry, the members are making available to the consumer better products. As a result of improvements, not all of which the Association can claim credit for, we are finding products of the southeast in ever widening areas of the country. These increased sales mean an ever increasing need for raw product from

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or .more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Cucumbers are members of the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae. They are relatives to pumpkins, squashes, gourds, and melons. The plants are annual trailing or climbing vines with flowers of both sexes on the same plant.
Cucumbers are native to northwest India and have been cultivated there for more than 3000 years. They were introduced to China in the second century before Christ by a Chinese
ambassador named Changkien. Cucumbers are one of the few vege-
tables mentioned in the Bible: ".... Garden of cucumbers," Isaiah 1, 8.
The popularity of cucumbers spread throughout Europe. In Greece they were known as sikuos, in Germany gurke and in English-speaking countries cucumber which was often mispronounced "cowcumber".
The "cucumber glass" was developed by an Englishman, George Stephenson, in an effort to make cucumbers grow straight. It is a plain glass tube or cylinder resembling a lamp chimney and is slipped over the growing cucumber causing them to grow perfectly straight. These glasses are collector's items now and next to impossible to find.
Cucumbers have been appreciated by many civilizations in the world. Most gardeners are successful cucumber growers and nowadays they don't need cucumber glasses to produce beautiful straight specimens up to twenty inches long.

Blueberries

harvested fruit. Machine-harvested fruits are more suited for processing for pie fillings, jams and other blueberry products.
With approximately 320 pounds per acre of rabbiteye blueberries produced from approximately 700 commercial acres in Georgia in 1976 and with more commercial planting coming, mechanical harvesting has become the logical alternative to hand-picking.
The high cost of hand-harvest labor at 7 to 15 cents a pound in 1976 due to decreasing seasonal labor supply indicates that as acres increase, more blueberries will be machine harvested.
Not only does the machineharvester eliminate the headaches of labor management and the unavailability of labor, but it speeds up the harvesting of a commercial crop and yields fruit that is very suitable for the rapidly growing processed fruit market.
A blueberry industry needs a fresh market and a processing market, so there is definitely an increasing need for machine harvested blueberries.
Money For Food
In 1950, U.S. consumers spent 22.4 per cent of their disposable income for food. Last year, only 17.1 per cent went for food, according to Cooperative Extension Service marketing specialists.

Avoid Boating Accidents
Observe Water Safety Rules

One year 1450 people died in boating accidents, accidents that might have been prevented if water safety rules and safe boating operations had been observed.

All boat users should know how to swim and know first aid, especially artificial respiration, since boats operate far from medical attention.
The law requires that all boats carry a Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device for every person aboard. Weak swimmers and non-swimmers should wear them at all times and everyone should wear them when weather conditions are hazardous.
Don't overload the craft. Keep passengers to a safe number. Never exceed the horsepower rating for your boat. Over-powered boats are unsafe.
Don't smoke while refueling. Don't let passengers stand up in a small boat or sit on the gunwales while you are underway. Equip boat with required and
essential gear: anchor, oars, boat hook, extra lines, fire extinguisher, tool kit and first aid kit. Running lights are a must for night-time operation. Take a transitor radio along to keep posted on changing weather conditions.
Most boats if capsized or swamped will stay on the surface so stay with the boat after such accidents until help arrives. But in dangerous or extremely cold water, try to get to shore as fast as possible.
When boats are meeting in or near a head-on position, each

should keep to the right. When boats are in a crossing
position, the one on the right has the
right of way. When one boat is overtaking another, the one being
overtaken has the right of way. Power boats should give way to
manually propelled or sail boats
unless the sail boat is overtaking the power boat. Small sail boats in a channel should give way to power boats which cannot operate outside the channel. Sail boats to windward should keep out of the way of sail
boats to leeward. Safety conscious skippers make a
point of knowing the swimming ability of everyone on board. If a person goes overboard accidentally
rescue procedures depend on what ability the man in the water has to help himself. If the man overboard can swim, a lifesaving device can be thrown to him.
When a weak or non-swimmer falls overboard, first swing the stern away from the side from which he fell. Toss him a flotation device if he
is not already wearing one, and promptly maneuver the boat back to him. Keep a close watch on him at all times and make the approach as
you would to a mooring at reduced speed and slightly to windward if
possible. Shut off the motor within a few feet of the victim and bring him aboard.

DOGWOOD DAMAGE One of the most common problems to dogwoods is lawn mower damage. The wound itself is serious enough it interferes with the movement of water and nutrients to the plant. But the wound creates an additional problem in that damaging dogwood borers are attracted to it. Mower-damaged dogwoods should be treated immediately with a tree-wound compound.

suppliers to the industry, the farmer.
Georgia, as most of the states represented in the Association, is blessed by having a longer pack season than some other areas of the country. In some cases, we as processors can contract with farmers who can get as many as three crops from a single field. Multicropping helps not only the farmer, but the consumer as well in terms of costs.

Pine Trees
(Continued From Page 1) control groups of Georgia loblollies," says Davis, a registered forester.
"The economic implications are good. Georgia's forestry industry already contributes more than $3 billion to the state's economy each year a figure which could be doubled. Georgia's forest products industry ranks as the third largest employer in the state, providing over 56,000 jobs. Increased lumber and wood product production will mean more jobs. Ultimately, the benefits will reach the landowners, the nurserymen and the building industry," Davis forecasts.
"The key thing we have learned here is where to obtain seed if you must go out of state. We have found
that the seedlings planted here in Georgia in the past were not always the best they did not produce the lumber and pulp wood they could have, had we obtained the seed from a better geographic race, from Louisiana, for example.
"A lot of years we don't have enough seed in Georgia due to lack of proper pollination and effects of weather conditions, and sometimes, the lack of manpower to plant trees lessens the amount of future seed supplies. The map we have developed after many years of research will enable growers, foresters and landowners to determine from which locale they should choose their seed. The results should be increased production and disease resistance with some varieties," Davis projects.
