GPFES Serves
Ga. 25 Years
Just a little over twenty-five years ago, a Star was born the Georgia Plant Food Educational Society, the second Plant Food Educational Society in our Nation.
Its founding fathers, mostly fertilizer people and College of Agricul-
ture folks, saw a great need for an organization to operate in Georgia as an agricultural educational service. It would foster and promote the dissemination of useful and practical information regarding all forms of plant nutrients. These objectives and purposes have not changed.
WORKING TOGETHER The flow of information has been from the Experiment Stations, Extension Service and State Depart-

ment of Agriculture. We have worked together on soil fertility programs, crop production projects, chemical workshops, farm tours and many others.
GPFES has given financial and manpower support to them. During the past twenty-five years, GPFES has provided well over $100.000 to the College of Agriculture for research and educational programs, and for academic scholarships. Project support in 1977 alone is $8,020.
THEPAYOFF The payoff has been pretty big. There is every reason to believe that it will be even bigger during the next twenty-live years. Lime use has increased from 234,000 tons to more than 1.5 million tons a year, and commercial fertilizer tonnage has really piled up from 1.2 million tons in 1950 to about 2.4 million tons in 1976. Farmers paid $54.7 million for crop fertilizer in 1950. In 1976, they spent $250 million for their plant food. Total pounds of N-P-K has in-

39 Cotton Counties Allowed Use of Emergency Chemicals

Sales Schedule

A state of emergency has been declared in 39 Georgia cotton counties where infestations of cotton bollworm and tobacco budworm seriously threaten the 1977 crop.

Learn Water Safety Habits

Avoid Death by Drowning

Drowning victims are often people who never intended to get wet. They

fall into the water from docks, boats, bridges, shores or pool docks, fre-

quently only a few feet from safety.

While this accounts for more than

swimming or playing in the water, again many of them within reaching

distance of safety.

The eleventh annual Cotton Promotion Day events are scheduled to be held in Dooly County on Friday and Saturday July 22nd and 23rd.
The schedule Saturday morning will get underway at the Dooly County Campground, three miles north of Vienna at 9:30 with an

Most drownings result because people violate or ignore good water safety practices, Drownings can be reduced if people will learn to swim and develop skills and knowledge that will contribute to safety in, on
and around the water. No matter how many safety mea-

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin declared the state of emergency and authorized the use of four emergency chemical control products in keeping with application practices imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency earlier this year.
Farmers in the emergency counties can use Bolstar 6, Ambush, Pounce and Pydrin. He said the materials may be applied by either commercial applicators or farmers who have been certified through county training programs.
Users of one or more of these four products would receive a report form at the point of purchase and urged that proper records be kept and the report form be filed properly in keeping with EPA regulations.
Counties involved include Ben Hill, Bleckley, Brooks, Bulloch, Burke, Calhoun, Candler, Clay, Colquitt, Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Early, Emanuel, Glascock, Houston, Irwin, Jefferson, Jenkins, Johnson, Laurens, Macon, McDuffie, Mitchell, Pulaski, Randolph, Screven, Stewart, Sumter, Taylor, Terrell, Thomas, Tift, Turner, Twiggs, Warren, Washington, Wilcox and Worth.

Transporting Animals

Requires Humane Care

If this youngster inadvertently slipped and fell into the water, his life jacket would keep him afloat until help comes. Even though they know how to swim, young children should ahvays wear some sort of personal flotation device.

New regulations have been adopted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to safeguard cats, dogs and certain other warmblooded animals shipped by air or other public transportation.
Specific requirements include minimum age limits (dogs and cats at least eight weeks old), shipping, containers, scheduling (requires delivery within four hours), health certification, terminal facility standards, and feeding provisions.
Complete texts of these new animal transportation regulations and additional information are available from: Animal Care Staff, Veterinary Services, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, USDA, Room 703, Federal Building, 6505 Belcrest Road, Hyattsville, Maryland 20782.

Dear Editor:
Your feature about watermelon was interesting. Last summer, when I visited the People's Republic of
China, we saw piles of their football size watermelons on street corners and along the roadsides for people
to buy. The Chinese want everyone to be well-nourished
and they say watermelon not only tastes good, but it
has a combination of the vitamins and minerals the active body requires in hot weather. For this reason, they try to supply a watermelon-a-day for everyone,
even babies in day care centers.

Decatur, Georgia 30033
(Editor's note: It's a fact - watermelons are good for you. One-sixteenth of an average size melon provides you
with 2,510 ID of vitamin A and 30 mg. of vitamin C and only 111 calories. That's over half of your vitamin A and C
daily requirements.)

Dairying is one of the most demanding jobs in farming. The cows have to be milked morning and night 365 days a year. There is no shutting off the cows for a couple of days vacation. Labor is hard to get for that job, and expensive to keep; so dairying remains largely a family enterprise.

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

A half cup of grated cheddar cheese blended with half a stick of butter and 1 tablespoon of chili powder creates a new taste in sand wich spreads. Cut in strips, it is a delectable canape when browned under the broiler.

Butter was gold, in more ways than one, back in colonial days. Before butter became exclusively a food, it was used as money. It's value was recognized by the Pilgrims who stored several tubs aboard the Mayflower.
A tasty variation of the Mexican cheese sandwich is the quesadilla -- a Mexican cheese turnover. Place a slice of bread, meltable cheese, such as Montery Jack on a heated sort corn tortilla. Dust lightly with chili powder, fold and fasten with a toothpick. Bake on a buttered cookie sheet until the cheese melts and the outside becomes crisp and brown.

What ate
Field daisies were at one time common only to the West but are now familiar to all regions of the United States. Also known as black-eyed Susans. This bright sunny flower is well-loved even by the most discriminating gardener for its outstanding and intense color.
In the past few years, field daisies have been hybridized and renamed the Gloriosa-daisy. In this form it has become a popular plant in annual and perennial borders. Still, the simple little daisies have an unequaled charm that even farmers who consider the plant a weed cannot deny.
Close cousins include the browneyed Susan, thin-leaved cornflower, green-headed cornflower and golden glow. Field daisies are not true natives of this country but as aliens they have escaped into fields all over and are very much at home here.
These daisies are easily recognized with their brown-black, cone shaped center surrounded by goldenyellow rays. The entire flower head usually measuring about two inches across. They grow in upright clumps about two feet tall with the coarse and hairy leaves alternating up the stiff stem.
There is little or no culture involved in growing these plants. They are quite free with their seed and once established in a location you can be certain they will stay around. They prefer dry, poor soil containing a lot of acid. Even though they prefer the bright sun, they can be spotted on the edge of woodlands where there is slight shade.
The drought-resistant daisy is an added attraction to any summer garden as they serve well as a cut flower. However, be sure not to plant them too near the corn field. As lovely as they are, they lose thei r appeal to farmers once they start winking at him through the corn stalks.

Dairy Jobs Plentiful

With Proper Training

Dairy science offers plentiful job opportunities in dairy production and manufacturing, but especially in manufacturing, according to Dr. Olin T. Fosgate, professor of dairy science at the University of Georgia.

"We can't begin to fill the job opportunities in it," he said. "They stem from all sides; they run in quality control associated with dairy products, dairy plant management and sales and processing. In all these areas we have high job oppor tunities with excellent salaries."
Dairy science graduates are needed to fill expanding positions in plant quality control. "Dairy product manufacturers are looking to people trained in quality control with one year's experience in the lab, and they're willing to offer them starting salaries of $21,000," Dr.
Fosgate continued. About 25 per cent of Georgia's
dairy science graduates enter dairy production, usually returning to a partnership in a family dairy business. Another 25 per cent enter some form of teaching, continuing in graduate school or research, work ing as a Cooperative Extension agent or teaching science or biology in the public school system. "There is a lot of flexibility for the dairy scientist," Dr. Fosgate noted. "There are a lot

of options open to him or her." More and more "city kids" are
entering dairy intern programs to gain practical experience toward dairy herdsmanship and farm management. Others graduate in dairy science to enter veterinary
college. Dairy science students who "like
to talk" may work in dairy industry in sales and ag-oriented businesses.
Capital investment requirements . of at least $1/4 million make it in creasingly difficult for individuals to start their own dairy farm.
About 90 per cent of Georgia's dairy science students pursue careers in production with one in 10 entering manufacturing, Dr. Fosgate said. Still, dairy production students usually "have their choice of one or
two jobs." Some of the greatest career
potential in dairy science may be found in dairy equipment and supply sales where Dr. Fosgate said good salespeople can advance to salaries of $15,000 in three years and $2550,000 in five years.

Dr. David R. Mertens [facing camera], assistant professor of dairy science, University of Georgia College of Agriculture, talks with dairy science majors in milking barn.

Summer Blood Drive
Summer is a crucial time in blood collections for the Red Cross Blood Program. While summertime activi ties and related accidents contri bute to the greater need for blood, many of the most reliable sources of blood are unable to produce the usual number of donors.
Anyone between the ages of 17 and 66, weighing at least 110 pounds, and in good health, is eli gible to give. Check with your local Red Cross Office for donor hours.
Diagnosing Plants
How do you know if a houseplant is healthy? Extension Horticulturist Doug Crater says new leaves -- pale green in contrast to the dark of older leaves -- and new buds indicate the plant is growing, not just surviving.

Drowning
(Continued From Page 1)
sures are taken the best way to help insure that accidents don't happen is through training. Someone in the family should know how to give arti ficial respiration. Youngsters should be taught to float and swim at an early age and simultaneously they should be made to know their limita tions.
Since the majority of drownings occur within a few feet of safety, it is often possible for a nonswimmer or an untrained swimmer to perform a nonswimming rescue safely.
The rescuer should limit personal contact with the victim and always maintain firm contact backward. If the victim is within arm's reach, the rescuer should lie flat on the deck and extend one arm, holding the deck or dock with the other arm. He can then grasp the victim's wrist or arm and draw him to safety.
Should the victim be beyond arm's reach, the rescuer can extend such items as a shirt, towel, coat, branch or pole and allow the victim to grasp one end and then pull him to safety. A line, ring buoy or an innertube can be thrown to a victim who is beyond reach of an extension rescue.
Swimming rescue should only be attempted by someone who has had lifesaving training. Otherwise a double drowning can occur.
GPFES Serves
(Continued From Page 11 creased from 258,170 tons in 1951 to a record high of 724,494 tons in 1976.
IN DOLLARS AND CENTS Georgia farmers are producing more on less acreage. In 1976, twen ty-two Georgia farmers produced over 200 bushels per acre of corn; the average state yield was 62 bushels per acre, an all-time high. Peanut yields in the state averaged 2985 pounds per acre, while many farmers were approaching yields of double the state average. These are only two examples. All this means, in dollars and cen ts, that Georgia's farm income has climbed from $524 million in 1950 to more than $2 billion in 1976 -- the span of time GPFES has served Georgia agriculture. GPFES takes great pride in having been a part of this tremendous growth during the past twenty-five years. We owe a debt of gratitude to those with whom we have worked, especially the one who made it all happen -- the Georgia farmer.
