Growers Organize
Vegetable Assn.
Last year in January, some onehundred people met in Tifton to initiate plans for the formation of a growers organization. This group was comprised of vegetable producers, industry related personnel, fresh market and processing representatives, research and extension people and others.
After considerable discussion the group decided to form the Georgia Vegetable Growers Association. Bylaws were presented, voted on, and passed with specified purposes stated. These are (I) to encourage, through appropriate educational methods, the efficient production, packing, handling, storing, processing and marketing of

These are the main objectives of the association at the present time and of course could be amended or altered as the group deems necessary.
The association is represented by a president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer. Also nine people elected on a staggered basis of one, two, and three year terms comprise the board of directors.
The association recognizes three types of membership: (1) Grower (2) Industry and (3) Honorary. Dues are assessed as follows: (1) Grower $25, (2) Industry $50 and (3) Honorary $3 annually.
Despite diversity of interest and widely scattered areas of production over the state, the association has grown steadily. Any person interested in vegetable production is encouraged to join and support this endeavor.
Vegetable production, both for fresh market and processing, is on the increase. Orderly, planned growth can be advantageous for all concerned, but rapid ill-planned, hap-hazard growth can result in ultimate ruin. The association is employing all available means to help present and future producer to

Dear Editor:

I've been advertising patchwork band aprons in the

MARKET BULLETIN for the past six weeks or so and

want you to know how pleased I am by the response

I've had.

To date, I've sold five aprons from the ads as well as

requests for bib aprons, place mats, wrap skirts and

popover aprons - other patchwork things I enjoy

sewing.

Thank you for making this service available to

needleworkers like me. It's a wonderful marketplace

for all craft folks who have a problem getting their

creations before the public. I have limited access to

transportation and a pre-schooler and I know there are

many other advertisers who are in a similar situation.

Again, thank you for an excellent publication and

for making this service work by putting it all together

every week.

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A 'smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.

All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

In 1976, American dairy cows produced enough milk to form a river that would measure 2,904 miles long, 41 feet wide and three-and-ahalf feet deep. It would stretch from Boston to San Francisco. If put in gallon cartons and placed side by side, the 120 billion pounds of milk produced would form a band around the world 85 times at the equator.

Did ou Knew?
More than 30 biblical references provide evidence that knowledge and use of milk goes back to the beginning or recorded history. Development of the dairy industry has paralled the growth of all civilizations and nations for the past 5,000 years.
***
According to the USDA's Economic Research Service, the average age of U.S. farmers has declined for the first time since 1910. The 1975 average age of 50.4 years is almost three years below the 1970 average.
***
Water, water everywhere! A cow drinks between 4,000 and 7,000 gallons of water each year equal to 40 to 70 very large bathtubs filled to capacity.
***
The dairy cow is the most efficient farm animal in converting forage and grain into food. Every year dairy cows munch a mountain of 13 million tons of byproducts. Because of microorganisms living in their rumen, cows have the unique ability to transform these worthless materials into nutrients that can be used to produce milk. It is estimated that cows can be maintained on a ration of 80-100 percent non-grain feeds. That makes the dairy cow a truly remarkable milk making machine.
***
In 1950, it took 15.8 minutes of work to earn 1/2 gallon milk; in 1975, it took 9.8 minutes. As a percentage of disposable income, consumer expenditures for dairy products declined from 4 percent in 1950 to 2.1 percent in 1975.
***
Yogurt sales are booming in the U.S. Sales for yogurt in 1955 were 17 million pounds; in 1965, 61 million Ibs.; and in 1975, 415 million Ibs.
***
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that in 1950, the average farmer produced enough food and fiber for 16 other persons. Today, each farmer feeds and clothes 56 others. By 1980, the figure should rise to 65.
***
Total milk production in 1950 was 116.6 billion pounds; last year it was over 120 billion pounds.
***
In spite of the quadrupling costs of labor, taxes and energy, equipment, etc., the real price of dairy products to the consumer is about onehalf what it was 25 years ago.

Major Milk Milestones

Although people have long been aware of milk's value, it wasn't until science and industry combined efforts that they were provided the safest milk in the world. Leeuwenhoek's discovery of spermatozoa in 1679 and Mendel's postulation of the laws of heredity

almost 200 years later made possible the breeding of high-producing cows through artificial insemmation.
Today's highly sophisticated and efficient U.S. dairy industry came about through the following;

1611 Cows arrive for Jamestown Colony. 1624 Cows reach Plymouth Colony. 1841 First regular shipment of milk by rail Orange County to New
York City. 1856 Pasteur experiments start. 1856 Gail Borden receives first patent on condensed milk from both
U.S. and England. 1857 First succssful condensery built by Gail Borden at Burrville,
Connecticut. 1875 First ammonia compression machine invented. This was the
forerunner of refrigeration. 1878 Continuous centrifugal cream separator invented by Dr. Gustav De
Lava I. 1880 First commercial pasteurizer appears in Germany. 1884 Milk bottle invented by Dr. Harvey D. Thatcher, Potsdam, New York. 1885 Market milk being pasteurized regularly, for commercial rather than
public health reasons, in Copenhagen and Stockholm. 1886 Automatic bottle filler and capper invented. 1890 Tuberculin testing of dairy herds introduced. Test for fat content
of milk and cream perfected by Dr. S. M. Babcock. 1892 Certified milk originated by Dr. Henry L. Coit in Essex County,
New Jersey. 1895 Commercial pasteurizing machines introduced. 1908 First compulsory pasteurization law (Chicago) applying to all milk
except that from tuberculin tested cows. 1911 Automatic rotary bottler filler and capper perfected. 1914 Tank trucks first used for transporting milk.
Homogenization developed by A. Gaulin. 1919 Homogenized milk sold successfully in Torrington, Connecticut. 1922 First railroad tank car for transporting milk introduced. 1925 Stop-and-go horse driven milk wagons replaced by first step-and-drive
milk trucks. 1932 Ways of increasing vitamin D in milk made practical. 1933 Fluid milk included in army ration. 1934 Michigan dairy makes first commercial success with homogenized
milk. 1938 First farm bulk tanks for milk begin to replace milk cans. 1942 Every-other-day milk delivery started (initially as a war conservation
measure). 1946 Vacuum pasteurization method perfected. 1948 Ultra-high temperature pasteurization introduced. 1948 First plastic coated paper milk cartons introduced commercially. 1950 Milk vending machines win place in distribution. 1955 Flavor control equipment for milk introduced commercially. 1964 Plastic milk container introduced commercially. 1967 Nondairy milk substitute introduced in several markets. 1968 Official acceptance of electronic testing for milkfat content. 1974 Nutrition labeling of fluid milk products. 1975 Metric measurement equivalent introduced.

Thanks to this steady progress, our nation's dairy industry now boasts refrig-
erated tankers and trucks, automatic milkers, stainless

steel piping and holding tanks, and computerized, automated processing plants for a wide range of milk products.

Easy Outdoor Cooking

Summer Energy Saver

Watermelons go back to prehistoric times. They were cultivated by the Egyptians, early Christians, and Imperial Chinese where they were
known as si-kua or "melon from the
east". Watermelons' origin has been
traced to the desert regions of the Kalahari desert in Africa; others claim it comes from southern Italy and Asia; and yet early French explorers discovered American Indians
growing watermelons in the Mississippi Valley.
This member of the gourd family seems to do well in most parts of the world as long as there is a long frostfree growing season with relatively high temperatures. Georgia provides ideal growing conditions making our state the third largest watermelon producer in the United States.
Unlike some other melons, Citrullus lanatrus (watermelons) are
not so sensitive to extremes in humidity making it possible to grow in more arid regions such as Egypt where it is a valuable source of water supply.
In other countries, watermelons
are valued for different purposes. In southern Russia, a beer is made from
watermelon juice or the juice may be boiled down to a heavy syrup like. molasses for its sugar and in Asia the seeds are roasted and salted for
nibbling. In this country, watermelons are a
favorite summertime food. They are especially enjoyed for their sweet, cool juiciness suitable for any meal or
occasion. Vafera Jessee
Stocker-Finisher
Conference Set
The Third Annual Georgia Stocker-Finisher Conference will be held in the Monument Room of the Macon Coliseum on August 4, 1977. The conference, which is sponsored by the Stocker-Finisher Council of the Georgia Cattlemen's Association and the Cooperative Extension Service, will deal with problems faced by Georgia cattlemen interested in the stockering and finishing business.
The conference will start at 9 a.m. and will adjourn by 4 p.m. with a lunch break. As many as 500 are expected to attend the event which is open to all cattlemen and other persons interested in the beef business.

Outdoor cooking is a practical summer alternative to meal preparation. It not only saves energy but also is a pleasant change for family meals and entertaining.

Before starting the grill, line the firebox with aluminum foil for extra reflected heat and quick, neat handling of ashes. Brush the grill with oil before putting food on it to reduce sticking.
For quick grill clean-up, remove the rack immediately. Extra heating will cook on grease and make for harder cleaning. If you put the rack in hot soapy water immediately after cooking, clean-up will be even easier. An up-turned garbage can cover makes a handy "sink" for soaking the grill.
You can save trips inside by using a wheelbarrow lined with foil and filled with ice for keeping foods cold. If you want to be fancy, scallop foil edges so that the barrow looks like a gigantic silver bowl on wheels. Arrange cans of fruit juice, other beverages, bowls of cold food,

one horse to another without thorough cleaning and disinfecting. This includes surgical instruments, needles and syringes, hoof knives, dental floats, stomach tubes, twitches, tatooing instruments, curry combs and bridles.
Control biting flies and other insects through sanitation and pesticides.
Stables in which infected animals have been kept should be cleaned and disinfected.
Breeding of EIA- position animals is not recommended.
Systematic testing of horses will detect carriers which can be removed as sources of infection.

containers of ice and even a
watermelon. Allow enough time to ready the
fire. It takes about half an hour for the charcoal briquets to glow and become gray with ash. Before beginning to cook, tap each coal with a poker to knock off the ash which holds the heat back by acting as an insulator.
For meat cooked to perfection,
arrange the coals so there is a onehalf to one inch space between
briquets. Six briquets are enough for a medium sized T-bone steak.
To prepare meat for the grill, remove outside fat to help prevent flare-ups, use lean ground beef and remove excess fat from chicken skin.
If flare-ups do occur after the food is on the grill, use a water pistol to
kill the flames. Use water sparingly though; your food may be steamed instead of broiled. Water may also lower charcoal temperature too much. Another method of cooling down the fire is to spread the briquets away from each other.
Cook the vegetables with the meat on the grill. Squash and onions cook easily. Dot slices with butter, sprinkle with basil and wrap in aluminum foil. These vegetables will cook in about 15 to 30 minutes. Corn on the cob dotted with butter and wrapped in foil should be turned frequently with tongs. Cooking time
is 10 to 20 minutes.

Official regulations concerning EIA
or Swamp Fever are as follows: 1. Horses being imported into
Georgia must be EIA-test negative within six months prior to importation.
Test results shall be recorded on the interstate health certificate.
2. All animals found to be positive to the EIA test that are 30 days beyond
weaning shall be required to be permanently identified by a method approved by the Georgia Department
of Agriculture. 3. EIA positive horses over nine
months of age will be quarantined and should be euthanatized, or maintained under isolation, or housed in insectfree quarters, or sold for slaughter on
a USDA 1-27 permit form for the movement of diseased animals. The USDA has recently passed regulations re-
quiring that positive horses being
shipped interstate must be identified as reactors to the Coggins test.
4. Georgia horses being shipped to other states are subject to EIA re-
quirements for the state of destination. Owners planning to move horses to other states should check with their veterinarian concerning the state of
destination requirements. 5. Owners of Georgia horses partici-
pating in shows, sales, rodeos, etc. should contact promoters of the par-
ticular event regarding EIA test requirements. Officials at some events
require both a health certificate and a copy of the [EIA] laboratory test results.

become aware of the problems involved in producing and marketing vegetables.
The association has also stressed the need for quality control in all areas of production. Georgia produce has not always been of good quality. This is an area that will continue to receive attention.
If you are interested in any phase of the vegetable industry, please let me take this as an opportunity to invite you to join the Georgia Vegetable Growers Association. Dues can be mailed to Donnie Turner, Jr., Rt. 1, Pavo, Ga. 31778.
