USDA Revises
Tobacco Grades The most recent division of fluecured tobacco grade standards published in the April 25, 1977, Federal Register by the Agriculture Marketing Service-USDA, were adopted to encourage farmers to do a better job of preparing tobacco for market and help return American tobacco to its former high position in world market demand.
We want to make sure that Georgia tobacco farmers fully un-
derstand the necessity of properly preparing tobacco for market and exactly what the new revisions of the grade standards will mean and how to meet them. Georgia tobacco can and must hold its position in the world market demand.
MEETINGS Therefore, a series of meetings is being held this week in the tobacco belt to fully acquaint Georgia tobacco farmers with the grade revision on sand and dirt and to actually show how these grades will be determined. Robert Miles, Tobacco Agronomist with the Extension Service at the Rural Development Center in Tifton is conducting meetings in Statesboro on June 6, Waycross on June 7 and at the REA Bldg. in Hazelhurst at 8 p.m. on June 9. Although the United States leads the world in producing and exporting flue-cured tobacco, exporters have become greatly concerned about the conditions of fluecured tobacco crops offered for sale. When tobacco contains large amounts of sand and foreign matter, the yield of usable tobacco in the exporters purchase is reduced. As a result, the demand for low-stalk tobacco is steadily decreasing and more of it is going into government loan stocks.
Sand and Dirt Over the past two years this rapid build-up in loan stocks of lowstalk tobacco and the related problems of sand and foreign matter have become the biggest risk to the future of the tobacco program. Through revisions of the grade standards, USDA hopes to help solve these problems. "Sand and dirt" have been designated as new special factors to

Mowing Too Close

May Kill Your Grass

Mowing your lawn too close to the

ground will not cut down on the yard

work. It will encourage weed growth

and probably kill the grass.

Every type of grass has an op-

timum growing and mowing height

varying from less than one inch for

hybrid bermudagrass to three in-

ches for tall fescue.

Mowing heights should vary

during the growing season. Fescue

should be cut shorter during the

peak growing periods in spring and

fall, then allowed to remain a little

longer during the summer.

Much of the plant's energy is

directed toward the growth at the

tip of the blade. Also, the blade is the

center for food production for

grasses. If the blade is too short, the

plant has trouble growing back.

Other cool season grasses such as

bluegrass and ryegrass are also

mowed relatively high. Common ber-

muda, zoysia, centipede, carpet and

St. Augustine grasses are mowed

half as tall as cool season grasses

and they are mowed more frequen-

tly.

No matter how tall you cut the

grass, you should never remove

more than one-quarter to one-third

of the blade when you cut.

Dear Editor I noticed the article on chiggers, but was surprised
that nothing was said about something that seems to work after the itching starts besides deadening the area with a local anesthetic as was mentioned.
I have always found if something can cut the air out, i.e. a thin film of roll on or cream deodorant or fingernail polish [if not irritating to the person's skin]. It is a good temporary reliever.

Horses, mules, ponies for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later' and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse fanners should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Sqiutftk?
Summer squash is one of many varieties of the Cucurbita family. It is soft-shelled, crook or straight neck, bright yellow and lightly warted. Summer squash requires a shorter growing season than the winter hardshelled varieties and is ready for picking six to seven weeks after planting.
Cucurbitas are native to North and South America. Archeological records indicate that they may have been planted as long ago as 6000 B.C. Summer squash, C. pepo, originated in northern Mexico and the United States.
When European settlers came to this country, C. pepo was widely grown by the Indians from Canada to Guatemala. It was a staple food in their diet and they taught the settlers how to prepare the new vegetable.
Explorers took squashes they found

Revises Tobacco Grades

(Continued From Page 1)
give a precise definition of foreign matter in tobacco. Tobacco to which a special factor is applied meets general specifications of the grade but has a peculiar characteristic such as dirt or wetness which modifies the grade.
Under the revised standards these new special factors will be applied to all grades of the priming group and the non-descript grades, NIL, N1GL, and N1PO when the tobacco contains more than normal but not an excessive amount of dirt or sand. When this special factor is applied the tobacco will receive a reduced support price.
Tobacco not covered by any standard grade because it contains foreign matter is designated as "NoG-F." Where excessive amounts of dirt and sand are involved the
in the New World to people in Europe.
Historical records indicate that culti-
vated species of squash were
unknown in western Europe prior to
1492. By the 16th century, however, at least two varieties of squash were
under cultivation, C. pepo and C.
maxima (hard-shelled squash).
The word squash is an Indian word "askutasquash" meaning "eaten raw
or uncooked". Askutasquash most
appropriately characterizes summer squash which is harvested immature
when the rinds and seed are soft and 100 percent edible.
Raw summer squash may be
sliced, without peeling, and added to salads like its cousin the cucumber. It
is also delicious tossed in cornmeal
and fried; boiled with onion and spices; or mixed in a casserole.

grader will mark that specific special factor on the lot ticket after the No-G-F. For instance, "No-G-Fsand" would indicate that the lot did not receive a grade because of an excessive amount of sand.
Economic Benefits Preparing clean tobacco for market will not only help protect the tobacco program, but will bring economic benefits to the grower as well. USDA in cooperation with the State Departments of Agriculture, farm organizations, and Cooperative Extension Services in the major fluecured production states, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia, has an educational program (in Georgia the meetings previously mentioned) to explain the advantages of marketing a cleaner product. Farmers are also urged to contact their local extension agents for more information on cleaning up tobacco. The revised grade standards will be in effect for a trial period for one year. If farmers do not take steps to market their tobacco in a cleaner more acceptable condition, the problems will be reassessed at the end of the 1977 flue-cured season and stronger action will be taken to assure the overall quality of tobacco for sale.
