Forest Farmers'
"How-To-Do-It"
THE 1977 FOREST FARMER MANUAL, just off the press, is a 130page down-to-earth guide to forestry in practice in the South, designed primarily for private, nonprofessional timber growers.
The manual details the how-to-doit essentials of forest farming, and
features the theme "The Business of Forest Farming - Today's Opportunities and Challenges". It covers all phases of tree farming ineluding how to get stared' management techniques and costs, steps in protecting the forest, how to make a timber sale, procedures for setting up and main-

taining required records, trends in property taxation and details on how to qualify for timber capital gains provisions.
In addition to providing a wealth of do-it-yourself information, in laymen's language, the manual provides a comprehensive listing of technical and financial assistance available to southern landowners. It is available for purchase at $10 per copy, including postage. Requests should be addressed to Forest Farmers Association, P.O. Box 95385, Atlanta, GA 30347.
The manual is only one of the activities of the association, which over the years has become increasingly known as the voice of southern timber growers. This organization which has a membership of over 2100 in 15 southern states, represents ownership of some 40 million acres of commercial timberland; Small to medium-sized nonindustrial owners, however, continue to make up the majority of

Salute to Dairying
Milk Measures Up!
June Dairy Month
Total milk production of 1,279 million pounds on Georgia farms during 1976 was 80 million pounds above 1975. The increase in total production over 1975 was 6.7 percent. The average number of all milk cows on Georgia farms remained the same and thus production per cow reached a new high of 9,915 pounds.
ASCS To Require Reports On Grains
Anticipating changes in farm legislation, the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service will soon require Georgia farmers to report their corn, grain sorghum, barley, and wheat acreage.
According to A.C. Jarrell, Acting State Executive Director, both congressional agriculture committees have reported out farm bills which provide that if a set-aside is implemented for 1978 crops, the acreage required to be set aside may be based on a percentage of the acreage planted for harvest in 1977.
Farmers will have until July 31 to report their acreage for corn and grain sorghum. Wheat and barley acreage must be reported prior to harvest. Farmers who have already begun or completed harvest should contact their ASCS office immediately.

Go. Cattle Producers Register

For Beef Order Referendum

The U S. Department of Agriculture has announced June 6 as the beginning of a two-week registration period for the Beef Research and
Information Order referendum and issued rules for the referendum.

New Peanut Variety
Developed In Ttfton
A high yielding, stronger shelled runner-type peanut is being released by the Agricultural Research , Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Stations.
The new variety, Tifrun, produces an average yield 4.5 percent higher than the most widely grown variety, Florunner, and has a stronger shell which cuts down on the amount of loose shell kernels produced.
Developed by Dr. R. O. Hammons, geneticist at the University of Geor
fia Coastal Plain Experiment tation, Tifrun is especially adaptable to southwest Georgia.
According to Hammons, the Tifrun peanut can grow wherever runner-type peanuts are grown, but it has done best on heavy soils and in non-irrigated field tests.
Tifrun seeds will be available for the 1978 season from the Georgia Seed Development Commission, 920 Whitehall Road, Athens, Georgia.

Anyone who was a cattle producer during 1976 can register to vote, either in person or by mail, at local Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service offices between June 6 and June 17.
A list of those who register will be posted daily at ASCS offices and a final listing will be posted five days after registration closes. Those registered can vote in the referendum between July 5 and July 15 at their ASCS office.
For approval of the Beef Research and Information Order, at least 50 percent of those registered must vote, and two-thirds of them must
favor it. The order would authorize a
research and information program administered by a Beef Board of up to 68 producers. Each state or geographic area would be represented in proportion to its cattle produc-
tion. The Beef Board could initiate a
broad spectrum of projects to improve beef production, distribution and marketing. Such a program could include consumer education and information, and research.
During the first three years of operation, the board could collect

Quilting Alt Began "Once Upon A Time"

Once upon a time a woman's abilities as a housekeeper were judged by

the number of quilts she hung out to "air" each spring. Nowadays her ways

with a vitamin chart and her handling of a crepe pan are apt to be con-

sidered, too; but quilts and quilting haven't lost a fraction of their standing

as fine arts.

The origin of quilting is attributed to the Middle East and Central
Europe. The practice of placing
several layers of cloth together to keep warm marked the introduction
of quilting as we know it today. In Southern Europe, however,
quilting was used as decoration since the weather did not necessitate warmth. Quilting was seen as an influence even in ecclesiastical garments.

After the landing of the Pilgrims, American women were faced with the problem of creating with imagination, fingers, needles and thread the necessities of daily living. Hundreds of designs spread from one end of the country to the other, exchanged by friends, or carried by traveling peddlers and immigrating wagon trains. Patchwork tops became the outlet for pioneer

Horses, mules, ponies

for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A

smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Prevention Easier Than Cure For Age Old Mildew Problem

Until you find the tell-tale black growth that is mildew, you

probably seldom think of excessive moisture in, on, under and around

your house. Then, when you realize that you have a problem, you

Ag Department Serves Georgia

The Georgia Department of Agriculture serves farmers and consumers in many ways. One of these is through:

Insect Pest and Plant Disease Control: All commercial pest control operators providing services to protect the homeowners from- termites and other household pests come under Department jurisdiction as does the inspection of all nurseries growing and selling ornamental shrubbery and agricultural plants.

Growing Vegtables On The Patio

There is much interest in growing flowers and vegetables in containers on terraces and patios. The apartment dweller or families living on small lots can grow certain vegetable plants in restricted space. However, fairly open sun is required for good
vegetable growth. Vegetables particularly adapted
to pots and boxes include "patio tomatoes," ornamental peppers, radishes, and greens. If a wire or wood fence is available,

staked tomatoes, beans, or cucumbers can be tied to the structure and be a functional screen as well as being ornamental.
Strawberries and herbs may be useful as ground cover plants in sunny locations.
Cut Wood Now
Now is the time to cut fuelwood for next winter's fires. It usually takes wood six to ten months to air dry.

Problem Loss of liquid from glass jars during processing (not a sign of spoilage) (Do not open to replace liquid)
Imperfect seal (discard food unless the trouble was detected within a few hours)
Product dark at top of jar (not necessarily a sign of spoilage)

Remedies For Conning Problems

Fruits and Vegetables

Cause 1. Lowering pressure in canner suddenl- alter processing period.
2. Fluctuating pressure during processing in pressure canner
3. Failure to work out air bubbles from jars before processing
4. Improper seal for the type closure used.
5. Jars not covered with water in water-bath canner.
1. Chips or cracks in jars.
2. Failure to follow recommended directions for closures used.
3. Particles left on mouth of jar.
4. Using old closures that should be discarded.
5. Lifting jars by tops or inverting while hot.

Prevention
i Do not force pressure down by placing cannei in a draft, opening the petcock too soon, etc. Allow pressure to drop to zero naturally; wait 2 minutes before opening.
2. Maintain a constant temperature throughout processing time.
3. Remove by running a spatula or knife between food and jar.
4. Follow the manufacturer's directions for closure used.
5. Jars should be covered with 1 to 2 inches of water in canner throughout processing period.
1. Examine carefully before using by rubbing finger around the mouth of the jar.
2. Follow manufacturer's directions.
3. A clean, damp, cloth should be used to remove any seeds, seasonings, etc. that prevent a perfect seal.
4. Do not reuse rubber rings and self-sealing metal lids. Do not use rusty bands.

1. Air left in the jars permits oxidation.
2. Insufficient amount of liquid or syrup.
3. Food not processed long enough to destroy enzymes.

5. Use tongs for removing jars from canner or grasp below lip. Leave in upright position. 1. Remove air bubbles before sealing jars. Use recommended head space.
2. Cover product with water or syrup.
3. Process recommended length of time.

Cloudy liquid sometimes denotes spoilage.
Color changes that are undesirable.
Floating (especially some fruits as berries)
Spoilage

1. Starch in vegetables. 2. Minerals in water. 3. Fillers in table salt. 4. Spoilage.
1. Contact with minerals as iron, zinc or copper in cooking utensils or water. 2. Over processing. 3. Immature or overmature product. 4. Exposure to light. 5. May be a distinct spoilage. 6. Natural and harmless substances in fruits and vegetables.
1. Over processing fruits and tomatoes destroys pectin. 2. Fruit is lighter than syrup. 3. Improper packing.
1. Incorrect pressure. 2. Overpacking. 3. Incorrect timing. 4. Incorrect method used. 5. Pour selection of fruits and vegetables.
6. Unsanitary conditions after gathering.

1. Select products at desirable stage of maturity. Do not use overmature vegetables.
2. Use soft water.
3. Use pure refined salt.
4. Process by recommended method and for recommended time. 1. Avoid these conditions by using carefully selected cooking utensils. Use soft water.
2. Follow directions for processing time. 3. Select fruits and vegetables at optimum stage of maturity.
4. Best to store canned foods in a dark place.
5. If any "off" odor or spoilage is suspected, discard food and sterilize or destroy jar.
6. None. 1. Follow directions for processing time.
2. Use firm, ripe fruit. Heat before packing. Use a light to medium syrup.
3. Pack fruit as closely as possible without crushing it. 1. Gauge should be checked every year for accuracy.
2. Jars should be well filled but not packed.
3. Follow directions for timing
4. Low-acid vegetables and meats must be pressure canned for safety.
5. Select product of suitable variety and at proper stage of maturity.'

Clover is native to Great Britain but has naturalized throughout most of the world. In the Middle Ages it was known as "claver" from the AngloSaxon word meaning club.
Clover was not respected as an agricultural crop until the seventeenth century when the Dutch discovered that it was a beneficial cover crop to improve the soil. Research has, revealed that the clovers' root hold tiny sacs of nitrogen which are released into the soil. Clover crops are also valued as a green manure.
Besides its uses agriculturally, clover is respected as an important medicinal plant. It reduces acidity in the body, soothes the nervous system and relieves bronchial coughs. A healthful tea may be made by pouring 1 1 /4 pints boiling water over 1 ounce of leaves and flowers.

Granny taught us many things To love, appreciate, songs to sing, To crochet, quilt and even to knit To continue earnestly, never to quit! To enjoy the finer things of life. To overcome the petty everyday strife. She even played games with us. She interfered when we would fuss. She read to us, and as we did listen We could just see how her eyes
would glisten. Our lives were shaped very definitely Into lives she'd have us be. Granny's education was limited indeed But in basic living-she knew how to lead. She's gone now, but her teachings live on Like the music of a never-ending song.

Restocking Hay Supply

Is Good Management

The demand for hay during the cold winter of 1976-77 exhausted most hay

supplies. Many producers are planning to replenish their hay supply and

put up a little extra in 1977. Harvesting excess forage growth and feeding as

needed to supplement a short supply of grazing forage is a good manage-

ment practice.

Hybrid bermudagrasses are used

extensively for hay production.

Sfxwl Knitting

Yield of bermudagrass is largely determined by amount of nitrogen

and water available during the

Ta.

growing season. Sixty to 90 pounds
of actual nitrogen is needed for optimum production per cutting.

Spool knitting is an old craft that has been passed down from grandmother to grandchild for many generations. The materials are inexpensive, readily available and the brightly colored ropes make attractive belts, hot mats or other
creations. Evenly space four one-inch
finishing nails (with no heads) on the top of a large empty sewing thread spool with solid top (preferably an old wooden spool)..The nails should extend about three eighths of an inch above the top of the spool.
Use knitting worsted for a heavy cord or a lighter weight if you
prefer.

Potassium is the next most critical fertilizer element in bermuda production. Potassium (K20) should be applied at the rate of one-half the amount of nitrogen. Phosphorus is essential for continued bermuda production but used in lesser amounts than nitrogen or potassium.
A method of fertilizing hybrid bermudagrass for a good yield of hay is 80 pounds of nitrogen (N), 20 pounds of phosphorus (P202) and 40 pounds of potassium (K20) per acre for each harvest of hay. Fertilizer is used more efficiently when an application is made for each growth period. Lime should be maintain a soil pH of 5.8 to 6. 2.

allowed to grow 6 to 8 weeks before harvest.

In grazing tests, average daily

gains of yearling cattle has been as

much as one-half pound more per

day when cattle grazed young

vegetative bermuda as compared to

old stemmy plant.

Drop yarn through the hole from the nail side down, extending it three inches below the bottom of the spool. Wind yarn around each nail, from right to left so a loop is formed on each nail.
Now you're ready to knit. Wind yarn around all four nails on the outside of the loops. With a large safety pin or yarn needle, insert the pin in the first loop and draw the loop over the yarn and off the nail. (It will begin to go through the spool hole.)
Pull the remaining loops over the outside row of yarn and off the nails.
Again wind the yarn around the four nails and work the loops over and off the nails. Continue winding and working off the loops until the rope is the desired length. Fasten off the ends and attach a tassel at each end if you use it as a belt.

members and are the backbone of the organization.
Since its establishment in Valdosta, Georgia, in 1941, the association has provided a full range of services to its members. It encourages better management of southern forests through educational and legislative action. Its education program is fostered primarily through the monthly Forest Farmer magazine, and the manual. The magazine provides down-to-the-minute information on techniques of growing and harvesting timber crops, while keeping growers alert to market conditions, sources of professional assistance, tax matters and other developments of interest to timber growers.
The association has come to be recognized as a major force in protecting and advancing the interests of timber growers. Among the association's legislative objectives are retention of timber capital gains, expansion of forest research activities, strengthening of forest fire protection, stepped-up insect and disease control, and promotion of federal cost-sharing for management activities by small private timberland owners.
Current top priority concerns of Forest Farmers Association include impact of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act on forest farmers, retention of timber capital gains provisions and research on how to control southern pine beetle attacks. The Association maintains close day-to-day working contact with numerous federal and state forestry agencies on such matters, along with its work with the U.S. Congress.
