Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Mushrooms deserve recognition as an integral part of the plant kingdom but caution must preface any interest aroused in their study and collection. Mushrooms can be deadly; they can also be enjoyed if selection and identification are accurate.
There are no short cuts in this procedure either. The silver spoon test of placing it against the flesh of a mushroom to see if the spoon discolors is worthless. Also don't trust the wild mice to nibble on only safe mushrooms. You'll never know if the mouse made it through the night.
Field guides, encyclopedias and books specifically written on mushrooms should be studied before collection and pictures and descriptions compared before any wild mushrooms are included in your diet.
Mushrooms are plants without chlorophyll. Therefore they cannot manufacture their own food and must depend on organic matter, living or dead, for their nourishment.
One of the keys to mushroom identity is the color of the spores. This is determined by making mushroom spore prints by cutting the stem from the mushroom near the cap. Place one sample on black paper, the other on white. Cover with protective covering such as bowl and leave at least four hours.
When you remove the cover the mushroom, there will be a delicate print formed by the microscopic spores. Spore colors range from white to pink, brown, black or even purple depending on the mushroom.
America grows an abundance of mushrooms, different sizes, types and colors. All we have to learn is which ones we can enjoy.

Fire Ant Fight

dangerous ant are slim to nil. There is no way of knowing if we will have bait available at all during the next two year phase out period.
Research has been underway to find an effective and environmentally acceptable replacement for Mirex bait. Unless there is a major breakthrough in this research very soon, the uninfested areas of the state as well as much of the U.S. could fast become playgrounds for this destructive and dangerous creature.
Georgians Honored
Five Georgia Extension workers have been honored for their outstanding 4-H Club work. Meeting in Grossinger, N.Y., the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents presented Distinguished Service Awards to Paul Bulloch, Talbot County; Ernest Wester, Cobb; Elizabeth Brantley, Bleckley; Winifred Parker, Harris, and Bill Wages, Spalding.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Three Commodity Commissions Change Slightly In January

The Board of Directors of three of Georgia's Agricultural Commodity Commissions will change slightly January 24, however, Board members of the Agricultural Commodity Commission for Milk will remain the same.

George Whelchel of Cordele was reappointed to the Board of the Peanut Commodity Commission, with H. C. Dodson of Tifton and Lucius Black of Preston appointed as new members to succeed J. R. Odum of Sylvester and John Daniel of Sasser.
Wiley Vaughn of Cartersville was
reappointed to the Cotton Commodity Board while Paul English of Montrose was named a new member to succeed Hubert Cheek of Bowersville.
There was one change in the Tobacco Commodity Commission with H. S. McNeil of Alamo appointed to succeed Randall Tuten of Baxley, while John Collins, Sr. of Cotton was reappointed.
All three Milk Board directors whose terms expired January 24 were reappointed. They are Jesse Jackson, Quitman; William Higginbotham, Washington; and Roy Holtzclaw, Gumming.

Appointments were made from

nominations submitted by individual

producer groups at the rate of two

nominations for each vacancy or

expiring term.

The appointments were made by

ex-officio members of Georgia's

Agricultural Commodity Com-

missions

Commissioner of

Agriculture Tommy Irvin; Farm

Bureau President Emmett Reynolds:

Attorney General Arthur Bolton;

and State Auditor William Nixon.

Georgia has nine Agricultural

Commodity Commissions organized

by farm producers for research,

promotion and education relative to

their specific commodity.

The peanut, cotton, tobacco and

milk Commissions were the only ones

having Board membership terms

expiring January 24. The state's

other Commodity Commissions

represent eggs, apples, peaches,

soybeans and sweet potatoes.

Since our question in Straight Line about a grist null that ground unbolted meal, we have heard from several mills that do this type of grinding. Pictured is the one located at the Georgia Agrirama in Tifton, dating back to 1879.

Could you tell me of some place to buy pecans? W .H., Tecumseh, Nebraska
The following is a list of Georgia pecan handlers who would be able to furnish you the pecans in the quantity and quality you need: Gold Kist, Inc., 605 Church Street, Waycross, Ga. 31501; Funston Pecan Co., Albany, Ga. 31702; Nut Tree Pecan Co., P.O. Box 3250, Albany, Ga. 31706; Plantation Services, P.O. Box 710, Albany, Ga. 31702; Mascot Pecan Co., Glennville, Ga. 30427; Dasher Pecan Co., Valdosta, Ga. 31601.

Could you please tell me a cure for the mange? S.L., Jesup
True mange hi dogs is caused by caracoptic or demodectic mites. Many skin diseases that appear to be mange are actually dermatitis which can be caused from other things such as allergies to fleas, grass, wool, chemicals, light or many other things. Dermatitis can also be caused by fungi or bacteria and in some dogs it can be due to hereditary factors such as hormone dificiency. To treat a skin disorder that appears to be mange, it is necessary to first know the cause. Therefore, we advise you to have your dog examined by a licensed veterinarian and he can then prescribe treatment for the dog.
***
The chrysanthemum plant I am enclosing had a strange growth on the stem. Please examine it and tell me what caused it.
A.B., Toomsboro The strange growth on the stem of your chrysanthemum is the egg case of the Praying Mantis [Stagmomantis Carolina]. There are several rows of the eggs inside the case. The Praying Mantis is a beneficial insect because it eats other insects. In fact, these egg cases are often sold to people who later use the Praying Mantis for partial in*se*ct* control on their plants.
I have a cow that won't breed. She was bred twice and it did not work. Can you help me?
J.W., Riverdale Breeding difficulties can be caused by several diseases and also from nutritional deficiencies as well as physiological problems. Therefore, with no knowledge of the veterinarian's examination and no diagonosis, it would be impossible to advise you with any accuracy. In general, according to Dr. John Cobb, it is best to have a cow in good condition, but not fat, at breeding time. Also some cattle will settle best when pasture bred rather than artificial insemination.

medicine, but as a wholesome food, like cow's milk, but with the added advantage of being more easily digested, because of the smaller and more easily assimilated fat globules.
Because America had no native goats, all of the purebred goats in this country, today have derived from a relatively few animals imported since 1900. But true to the indomitable American spirit, we are recognized today as having the finest Dairy Goats in the world. They are in great demand and are exported all over the world.
The five recognized breeds of Dairy Goats in America are: Alpine, La Mancha, Nubian, Toggenburg and Saanen. They do equally well in all parts of the country and they all produce milk of the highest quality.
We are a young Association (founded in July 1976), but we are a hard working and aggressive group. The membership has voted to hold a Dairy Goat Show in April of 1977. The show will be sanctioned by the American Dairy Goat Association and it will be the first one ever held in the state.
