Our Home
Of Tomorrow
Future Homemakers of America is one of six vocational education youth organizations. A part of the junior and senior high school home economics curriculum, it provides meaning and motivation for youth working toward educational goals related to consumer home economics and vocational home economics education and reaches beyond the classroom instruction into the home community.
The overall goal of the organization is "to help youth assume their
roles in society through home economics in areas of personal growth, family life, vocational preparation and community involvement. In other words, it helps us develop leadership, good citizenship, and prepare for the vital work of our country. In our FHA and HERO chapter meetings we analyze member con-

cerns and then develop what we call in-depth projects that are related to our home economics classroom studies. Many people have no idea what is taught in home economics classes today.
It isn't just cooking and sewing, it's learning about living, teaching us how to cope with the dual role of homemaker and wage earner in today's fast-paced society.
Future Homemakers of America was founded June 11, 1945 as an incorporated, nonprofit organization supported by membership dues. There are two types of chapters.
FHA chapters place major emphasis on consumer education, homemaking and family life education combined with exploration of jobs and careers. HERO chapters, taking the name from home economics related occupations, place major emphasis on preparation for jobs and careers with recognition that workers also fill multiple roles as homemakers

EPA Mirex Ban
Fought By SLF
The fight against the decision of the Environmental Protection Agency to ban the use of Mirex to control fire ants is continuing.
"The health and welfare of millions of Americans living in the fire ant infested areas of the Southeast are being denied the only effective program to deal with the problem," declared Ben Blackburn, president of the Southeastern Legal Foundation and former U.S. Congressman from Georgia. "The sting of the fire ant is most painful, and persons with allergic tendencies can suffer the loss of arms or legs or their lives."
The effect of the ant on agricultural production amounts to more than 23 million dollars annually. EPA has ruled the use of mirex must be phased out over the next two years without assuring farmers and landowners that an effective substitute be found by that time.
Anyone wishing to assist can call 404/325-2255 or write: Southeastern Legal Foundation, Suite 950, 1800 Century Blvd., Atlanta, Ga. 30345.

Third State
Grain Lab
A third state grain grading laboratory, authorized by the last session of the General Assembly, will be located in Swainsboro.
New equipment is on order and renovation of the physical facilities will get under way soon and limited grain grading services will be offered by July 1.
The state's two grain grading labs, located in Gainesville and Valdosta, handled some 27,000 samples last year. Georgia's growth in grain production and buyer demand for adequate grading has made a third state laboratory absolutely necessary.

New Federal
Regulations Effect
Georgia Farmers
Federal regulations are being released by several regulatory agencies that have serious implications for farmers, according to the Georgia State Employment Service, Georgia Department of Labor.
One such regulation particularly significant at this time is the "Farm Labor Contractor Registration Act of 1963", as amended. This Act is administered by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment Standards Administration, Wage and Hour Division.
The Act requires a registration and certification through the U.S. Department of Labor for persons that recruit, hire, transport, and furnish farm labor. Farm Labor contractors, more commonly known as "crew leaders", are subject to ffties and penalties if caught operating without a registration card. Equally important, farmers and farm operators are also subject to fines and penalties if they employ the services of non-registered crew leaders.
If it is determined that an employer hires the services of a contractor who does not possess a certificate of registration, he is subject to a civil penalty up to $1000 for each violation of the Act. He is also

and community leaders. We, as Future Homemakers,
believe preparation for our home of tomorrow, through Home Economics Education, is more important today than ever before. We know that the kind of individuals we are is influenced by our homes. Our homes and family lives influence our health, happiness, and security and motivate nearly everything we do.
FHA has influenced my life and opened doors to a whole new world for me. I have developed an awareness of others' needs and the ability to reach out and help others in my own small way. Many doors have opened for me and I feel I owe a lot to my FHA involvement.

Dear Editor:
When I read the article on blackberries, a favorite puzzle among us when we were youngsters many many years ago came to mind:
White as snow - snow it ain't Green as grass - grass it ain't Red as Mood - blood it ain't -
Black as ink - ink it ain't What is it?
Blackberries, in every stage as it matures

Milkweeds grow in the most forlorn of places, alongside railroads, in forgotten pastures and waste areas. The only growing conditions they seem to require is neglect and a breeze to carry their seed.
Milkweeds are tall plants ranging from two to six feet tall. Their opposite or whorled leaves are some-

times up to eight inches long and are hairy on the underside. Flowerwise, they produce greenish-purple clusters that are so tight they look like a head of broccoli before opening.
Their most noted characteristic is, however, their seed pods which appear in late summer. Usually they are about three to four inches long and contain hundreds of tightly packed flat seed, each with its own tuft of silk hairs.
Many people collect milkweed pods, and save them to use in Christmas decorations as the silkenhaired seeds give an angelic appearance to holiday displays.
There is, however, no reason to wait until Christmas to enjoy milkweed pods. According to naturalists they are unsurpassed as a wild food. The pod must be picked before it fully matures, while it still feels solid to the touch; if it feels like rubber, the silk is already forming and the pod won't be good to eat.
To prepare milkweed pods, boil for one minute, pour off water and repeat. Sometimes it is necessary to blanch the pods three to four times to remove all the bitterness - taste to make sure. After blanching, boil the pods once more for 15 to 20 minutes in salted water, drain add butter and serve.

Another important Act deals with the adequacy of housing, field safety, and overall standards for agriculture as they relate to farm workers. This is the Occupational Safety and Health Standards Act of 1970, as amended.
The State Employment Service will work with any farmer, farm group, or association to bring their operations into compliance and to assist them in finding and recruiting workers.
Employers are urged to visit the nearest Employment Service facilities where information and materials needed by contractors for registration is available in order to be properly informed about what is required of them under the "Farm Labor Contractor Registration Act".
More Pork
U.S. cattlemen are cutting back on beef production, but hogs are on the increase. In fact, USDA says there may be 20 per cent more pork during the first half of this year, compared with the same period in 76.

BAD FIRE YEAR
Georgia had 13,713 wildfires in 1976, and 58,035 acres were burned. Not since the drought years of the mid 1950's has Georgia had so many fires in a single year. And not since 1968, he adds, has so much acreage been burned. However, the average fire size, 4.23 acres, was still well below the Southeastern average.

EATING CHICKEN
Nearly half of all American homemakers serve chicken to their families once or more each week. The exact percentage, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture survey of 2,503 households, is 49 per cent. In the snme survey, it was determined that 95 per cent of all U.S. families eat chicken at some time during the year.
