Animal Health
Prime Concern
The Veterinary Medical Experiment Station of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine conducts basic and applied animal and poultry disease research programs oriented toward disease problems of immediate concern to Georgia's multi-billion dollar livestock industry.
The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia ap-
proved establishment of the Station in November, 1973, and operation began in July, 1976. The unit previously termed the Poultry Disease Research Center is now an integral and important part of the Veterinary Medical Experiment Station. The Veterinary Medical Experiment Station is housed primarily

within the various departments of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Athens. These departments are Avian Medicine, Physiology and Pharmacology, Pathology, Parasitology, Small Animal Medicine, Large Animal Medicine, Anatomy and Radiology, and Medical Microbiology.
Some additional facilities of the Station are located at the Athens and Tifton Diagnostic Assistance Laboratories. A Satellite Herd Health Program at Tifton was initiated in March, 1977 and offers unique opportunities for research on important herd health problems.
Research program priorities are established with the aid of the Veterinary Advisory Board. Members of the Board represent associations such as the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association, livestock producer and commodity groups, and other groups who maintain close contact with the various segments of Georgia's livestock industry.

Should Be Avoided By Growers

Soybean growers are urged to avoid using soybean inoculants that have been pre-mixed with molybdenum and/or a fungicide.

Warm Weather Time,
Revaccination Time
Approaching warm weather is bringing hoards of mosquitoes and the threat of equine encephalitis (horse sleeping sickness). All Georgia horse owners are being urged to vaccinate their animals against this disease.
Although vaccines are plentiful, their effectiveness last for only one year making revaccination vital each spring.

Although growers may want to
use these materials on their seed soybeans, the materials should be purchased separately from the inoculant and mixed at the time of planting.
Tests conducted by researchers at the University of Georgia in
Athens on samples purchased from various locations in Georgia show a reduced number of bacteria in samples that were premixed and produced no modules in greenhouse tests. (See chart.) It is generally agreed by most soil microbiologist that at least one-million bacteria per gram is needed and preferably ten to one-hundred million.

Farmers Must Have
Pesticide Certification
By March 31, 1977, county agents had given pesticide training courses to 21,373 farmers or about 47 percent of the farmers in Georgia. This training will meet the requirements of the Georgia Department of Agriculture in certifying farmers to purchase and use pesticides EPA classifies for restricted use.
It is expected that many agricultural . pesticides with the warning words "Danger" and "Poison" will be classified for restricted use. EPA has not yet identified these, but is expected to do so by October 21, 1977.
There is no charge for the training (which takes about two and one-half hours) or the certification. While some county agents will continue to offer training courses over the next few months, the next state-wide effort to reach the rest of the farmers is scheduled for September 26 October 21, 1977. Federal and state law will require that all farmers who purchase or use restricted use pesticides after October 21, 1977 be certified.

Since soybean acreage is being increased in Georgia in 1977, a large acreage will be placed into soybean production for the first time from old pastures and newly cleared land. A

Horses,
mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for ad vertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

FROZEN PESTICIDES Be careful about using old pesticides that were exposed to freezing temperatures during the winter. Extension Service specialists also caution farmers and gardeners about buying "bargain" pesticides this time of year. Make sure the materials you buy were stored in a heated warehouse and protected from freezing.
THOSE NUMBERS Those numbers on the fertilizer bag, such as 5-10-15, aren't all that confusing. They stand for the per cent of actual plant food nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, in that order that's in the bag.

Maypop is the common name for a vine and flower in the South correctly known as Passiflora incarnata. It is also known as passion flower and apricot vine in some circles.
In the summer when the fruits begin to ripen one of the best ways to spend a hot afternoon is maypopping. First you pop open the skin and suck the juicy fruit; then after you tire of this activity, jump on the fruit to see who can make the loudest pop.
Maypops originally came from Brazil. We owe their deliverance from the jungle to the Spanish explorers. They thought the beautiful flower was connected in some way to the crucifixion so the legend of the passion flower came to be.
The ten petals of the outer ring are supposedly representative of the ten apostles who witnessed the crucifixion or passion of Christ. The ring of filaments within is suggestive of the crown of thorns while the five stamens represent the wounds; the three stigmas, the nails.
In the North maypops are hothouse plants; in the South they grow wild outdoors. The flowers are about four inches across and smell something like carnations. A drop or two of parrafin in the center of the bloom will make it suitable and lasting to use as a cut flower.
After the plant has flowered, watch for the fruit. It takes about a month for it to fully mature and is ready for picking when they turn deep yellow with a brownish tinge.

Inoculants

"Returning To The Soil"?

Read Labels Carefully

Rising food prices in the past few years, have more people "returning to the soil" this summer, planting and raising their own vegetables. A relatively
small plot of land can give a continuing supply of garden fresh produce from
spring into fall.

Many people prefer to start their gardens from seed, starting some plants indoors, and the more hardy kinds outside before the last frost. How you select seeds for the garden, however, can mean success or failure.
For this reason, it is important to read carefully the labels on the seeds you buy, and to understand what they mean. For most seeds, labels required by the act show the name of kind and variety, the purity, and the germination that can be expected.
However, for vegetable seed in less than one pound packages, only the kind and variety name need be
Insulate Shrubs
With Bark Mulch
During the past winter, many trees and shrubs were killed or suffered severe damage due to the prolonged cold weather. Much of this damage and death could have been reduced or eliminated by proper mulching with bark.
Applied last fall at a depth of five to six inches to a diameter depending on the plant size and age of planting, the bark would have provided insulation which would have maintained a higher soil temperature and decreased the depth of freezing.
In many instances this would have made the difference between death or severe damage and relatively little damage to the plantings.

listed if the seed meets certain germination standards set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for that kind. If the germination standard is not met, the words, "Below Standard" must appear on the label, and the correct per-
centage listed. The germination percentage
indicates the percentage of the seeds that can be expected to germinate under favorable conditions. A listing of 85 per cent would mean that 85 out of every 100 seeds will develop adequately, given ideal care and growing conditions. Obviously, the higher the germination rate, the fewer seeds you'll need. The date of germination is also helpful. The germination will decline as the seeds get older, especially in hot and humid areas.
Other listings that may appear on the label include the net weight of the seeds, or the number of seeds in the package. Seed producers usually pack the amount needed to plant a row or the number of hills sufficient to supply one household. For example, 15 or 20 cucumber seeds may be enough while several hundred lettuce or raddish seeds may be normal.
Some gardeners attempt to save their own seed from the garden for use the following year. This is generally a poor practice as many varieties are hybrids that will not breed true to type. The Federal Seed Act requires that hybrid vegetable varieties be labeled with the word
"hybrid." All states have seed laws requir-
ing truthful labeling of seed offered for sale.

able information on current and emerging animal and poultry disease. The research programs are divided broadly into four main categories: infectious diseases, non-infectious diseases, diagnostic techniques, and therapeutic procedures.
Diseases currently being investigated by the Veterinary Medical Experiment Station are bovine hardware disease, pyelonephritis, respiratory disease complex and mycotoxicoses; swine leptospirosis, Aujeszky's disease, immunodeficiency diseases, mycobacteriosis, and colibacillosis; equine encephalomyelitis; and bacterial diseases of catfish. Diagnostic procedures under development include milk testing for dairy cow infertility identification, immunodiagnostic techniques for bovine urinary disease, and the transtracheal wash technique for diagnosis of bovine respiratory diseases. A vaccine for swine Aujeszky's disease is being developed. Poultry diseases under study are Newcastle disease, mycoplasma diseases, and viral arthritis. A noteworthy accomplishment of the Poultry Disease Research Center was the development of the Marek's disease vaccine. Recently a vaccine was developed for avian infectious coryza.
Ultimately, the mission of the Veterinary Medical Experiment Station is to improve animal health and thereby increase animal productivity. This in turn has a significant influence on the development and fi.nancial stability of Georgia's valuable livestock industry.
WHICH TOMATO? Wondering which variety of tomato to plant in your garden this year? Extension Service Horticulturist Jim Barber suggests such nematode-wilt resistant varieties as Better Boy, Manaluci, and Marion. Whatever variety you use, be sure it's an indeterminate one that is, one that keeps blooming and bearing throughout the season.
