Bringing Farm,
Campus Closer
To be successful, farmers today must be more than just "plowin1 , plantin', and pickin'" farmers. Modern farm management requires knowledge of fertilizers, pesticides, and business operations far beyond just the planting and harvesting of crops.
Whether on large farms or simple home places, the rural, the
suburban, and the city dweller have many of the same questions and need similar answers.
For such busy people, the University System of Georgia provides an Independent Study program that brings academic learning closer to the farm. Independent Study offers something of

interest to almost everyone. In fact, a number of courses are directly farm oriented: Forage and Pasture Crops, Environmental Health (disease control), Forestry, and Entomology (pests and pest control), to mention a few. Other courses, such as Accounting, Business Law, Income Tax, Management, and Finance, are important to farm operators.
Nutrition, Interior Design, Georgia History, and Sociology are examples of the kinds of courses appealing beyond the effort to make a living. Some 180 courses are available currently; others are developed from time to time as subject interests change.
Independent Study is a "home industry." Our students are scattered all over the state wherever mail service reaches (and that surely is everywhere!). They register whenever they wish, by mail; study materials are shipped with detailed instructions for studying and reporting.
Those who wish to receive college credit for their studies report for examination at the end of

Dear Editor:

After being a victim of poison ivy and poison oak

many times, I finally found it is better to apply a pre-

vention rather than a cure. Therefore, if I have been

near or in contact with these plants, I wash all ex-

posed areas of my body and while the body area is

still wet I dust dry baking soda on just as you would

powder. Let it dry and remain on so as to serve as an

antidote to the poison. [Do not use baking soda if irri-

tation or itching has begun. This will react as an acid

and actually burn the skin.]

This prevention is much better than suffering after

you have blisters. Try it - you'll love it and have a great

summer.

Over 2000 years ago the importance of peanuts was acknowledged. Earliest records trace their origin to Brazil where the Inca Indians placed peanuts in the tombs of their mummified dead to give them strength on their long journey to the other world.
Peanuts did not leave their native land until the Spanish started their exploring escapades. Soon Europe, Asia and Africa became aware of the value of goobers (nguba, African). It was therefore natural for early colonists to bring peanuts with them when they came to America.
Until the War Between the States, peanuts were used almost exclusively for hog feed. People ate them but few admitted it. However, during the War when rations ran out, soldiers and civilians turned to goobers for sustenance. In the South, farms were ravaged, livestock slaughtered and storehouses emptied. But peanuts went unnoticed maybe because their edible part didn't show maybe because they were considered unfit for humans to eat.
But out of this hardship came many discoveries the nutritious value of peanuts, peanut oil and peanut butter and George Washington Carver who alone developed over 300 peanut byproducts.
Georgia first grew peanuts to feed the hogs but later to supply the raw material for peanut by-products. Peanut oil for example became such a profitable endeavor that several oil mills were built in south Georgia exclusively for that purpose in the 1918 era.
By World War II when vegetable oil shipments from the South Pacific were curtailed, land devoted to peanut production for oil and other by-products had increased to more than 1,500,000 acres in Georgia.
Georgia has led the nation in peanut production since 1929. It is our most valuable cash farm crop yielding more than $311,000,000 in 1976.

Apple Growers "No-See-Ums"

than other varieties. Scab can be a severe problem in North Georgia, but it has not been found in Middle Georgia; while bitter rot in Middle Georgia is much more difficult to control than in North Georgia.
Because of the variation of apple disease problems between regions, it is necessary for the Extension Service to prepare spray guides for each region.
During the past few weeks, growers have been battling scab, cedar-apple rust and black rot. Most of the damage caused by these diseases occurs from bud break until petal fall. For instance, the fungus which causes black rot comes out of dead twigs in the tree and enters the apple just before or during bloom. However, the rot the fungus causes does not become evident until harvest time.
During late April and early May, powdery mildew will be a real problem, especially in North Georgia on the Rome Beauty and Stayman varieties. The chemical used for controlling other diseases will not control powdery mildew. Therefore another spray must be added to the already several sprays, beginning at petal fall, for mildew control.
There is never a dull moment for the apple grower. By the time he wipes out his scab, black rot, cedarapple rust and mildew, it's time to start on summer rots. Summer diseases, such as bitter rot, bot rot, sooty blotch and fly speck, begin to show up in late May and remain until harvest time.
Bitter rot is the most common of all of the rots and is much more severe in Middle Georgia.
Bot rot is present in both North and Middle Georgia and really complicates apple spraying since none of the fungicides used for bitter rot control will control it.
Apple diseases are difficult to control, and the grower deserves every cent he receives when he places those beautiful red apples on the market. For those individuals who feel like they can grow apples cheaper than they can buy them at the market, they should observe a commercial grower as he battles the pests.

settlers. In 1794 it is written that "The most troublesome plague to both man and beast, especially in passing through the woods, was a kind of insect called by the Indians Ponk or Living Ashes, from their being so small that they are hardly visible and their bite as painful as the burning of redhot ashes."
Sand flies are difficult to control. Foggers, and repellents are the only solutions recommended and their effect will last only a few hours.

Chiggers
Chiggers are almost invisible to the naked eye but can be readily identified by the annoyance they cause. From three to six hours after an individual has walked through tall weeds and grass an intolerable itching begins, usually around the ankles, knees and wrists. Severe dermatitis results that can last a week or more.
Chiggers do not penetrate the skin as commonly believed. What they do is inject a digestive fluid in the skin that disintegrates the contents of surrounding cells and the disintegrated cells are used as food. When the chiggers are fully fed, they drop off the host.
Chiggers lay their eggs on vegetation and the newly hatched larva remains quiescent in a shady spot near the top of low-growing vegetation. They are activated by air current carrying carbon dioxide characteristic of an approaching vertebrate host. In general, chiggers feed on a multitude of mammalian hosts, including man.
After being in an infested area, take a hot bath or shower using lots of soap. Apply an antiseptic to welts. To prevent itching, apply a local anesthetic.
