Still Growing
When Berry College was first founded, and for many years thereafter, agriculture was an integral part of the school. Over the years, due to several factors, the student enrollment in the department of agriculture decreased and the importance of the academic program dwindled. Ultimately, in 1968, the degree program in the department was discontinued.
However, a two-year program in animal technology was approved
lin 1971 and a baJchelor of science I degree program in animal science I was installed in 1975. The stuI dents wishing to pursue a bachelor jof science degree in animal science can choose one of the following: Option I - Animal Science-Business; Option II - Animal Science-Industrial Education; and
(Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Wil-
liam F. Moore, Chairman, Department of
Agriculture, Director, Rollins Beef Research
Center, Berry College, Mount Berry, Georgia

Option III - Animal Science-Science. The programs have been tremendously successful.
The department of agriculture is currently the fourth largest, and the fastest growing department in the college with 140 majors. (This is compared to two majors in 1971.)
The students acquire experience through laboratory exercises and by working on the vast animal science enterprises through Berry's extensive student work program. Actually, the students are strongly encouraged to work. Eventually, the animal science degree requirements at Berry will probably include the requirement that the student work on the farm(s) for at least a year.
Providing the students an opportunity to gain some "hands-on" experience is so important today, even almost essential. Approximately 70 per cent of the animal science students in this country today were not farm reared.

mii (enlarged)
The American may apple is a native woodland plant with edible fruit, white waxy flowers and a medicinally powerful root. In different parts of the country it is commonly known as raccoon berry, hog apple and wild lemon.
When the early settlers came to America they called the plant mandrake after a European plant with somewhat similar qualities. In the Old Country, mandrake was regarded as one of the most famous ancient medicinal herbs as well as being one of the most superstitious and magical.
In medieval times the roots were cleaned and trimmed to resemble human forms and sold to doctors, pharmacies and little crooked ladies with big black hats. The roots contained a drug called podophyllin, a powerfully potent liver medication that can cause death if improperly used. (Caution: stems and leaves are also poisonous.)
Less ominous and much more enjoyable is the fruit of the may apple, a lucious berry-like creation the shape of a rounded lemon and the color of honey. In late summer the may apples are ready for picking. They can be eaten fresh or used to make delicious marmalades and jellies.

Peach Crop Damaged By Ha//

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin and Peach Commission Chairman Edgar Duke last week surveyed the damage to Georgia peach trees caused by a severe hail storm that hit Peach and Crawford counties.
With more than 1,200 acres of damage in Crawford County and about 1,500 acres ruined in Peach County, the '77 crop will probably be reduced by 10 percent.

Annual Peanut
Short Course
All seed producers are reminded that the annual Peanut Seed Short Course is scheduled for May 20. The course will be held at the Rural Development Center in Tifton.
The Georgia Crop Improvement Association is the sponsor of the short course.
Groin Dealers,
Producers Meet
The recent passage of the new United States Grain Standards Act is making it necessary for the Georgia Department of Agriculture to make certain changes in the operation of its grain grading program that will affect dealers and producers in Georgia.
All interested parties are invited to attend a meeting on April 14, 1977, at 2 p.m. in Room 201 Agriculture Building, Capitol Square. Information on the recently passed Georgia law covering the licensing and bonding of grain dealers will be provided.

estimated the loss to his county would be approximately one million dollars this year. Duke estimated his losses at about $3000 an acre and said it would probably take five years for the trees which were hit to begin to bear fruit at their full potential again.
Several hundred acres of pecan trees also suffered damage and many were uprooted. However, the overall pecan crop is not expected to suffer a great loss.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Wednesday, April 13, 1977

Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor: I want an old time sacred harp song book like we
used in 1905 and 1910 on up til the late 20's - please no revised edition. It has so many happy memories for me. My mother would play the organ and we all would gather round and sing "The Way Worn Traveler", "How Firm a Foundation" and "Sweet Canaan". I have tried all the bookstores but haven't found it. Please help me if you can.

Horses,
mules, ponies
for sale
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
People who are buying and
breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
On recommendation of the State
Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

eorgia Cooking

COUNTRY STYLE BREAKFAST Sausage patties with apple rings are great favorites.
SAUSAGE PATTIES Mold bulk sausage into patties. Place them in a cold frying pan. Fry slowly at medium-low heat until cooked all the way through, turning once. Pour off fat as it accumulates. Arrange on warm platter with the apple rings on one end.
GLAZED APPLE RINGS Core and slice the apples. Do not pare. Place in hot sausage drippings, sprinkle cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar over the apple slices. Cover and cook ten minutes, then cook uncovered until rings are glazed, tender and transparent. For uniform glazing turn the apples frequently.
