Produce Industry
Unique Business
The Produce Industry is the most unique business in America. It is comprised of three segments: Farmers, Shippers, and Wholesalers or Distributors. The Wholesaler and Distributor is the essential segment that enables the farmers to reach the widest available markets to insure his realizing his fullest profit potential.
The industry is bound together by three "C's", Confidence,
Cooperation, and Coordination. For this reason the Atlanta Wholesalers, who are completely self sustained, joined together to form the Atlanta Produce j Dealers Associa'tion. The primary purpose of this organization is to put forth a combined effort of its members to help support all agricultural

interests and activities of local, state and national levels as well as civic and educational endeavors of the community.
A full yearly tuition is donated to Clayton Junior College to be used by a recipient of their choice, so some enterprising and deserving student will be encouraged and enable to pursue higher education.
We annually support the Art and Craft Show sponsored by Clayton County Business and Professional Women's Club.
In past years, we have furnished the local efforts needed to help successfully stage several national conventions and joint promotions which reflected favorably on our own state agriculture and local communities.
However, our major attention, is focused on promoting and cooperating in the smooth daily operation of the world's largest farmers market which benefits farmers, consumers, merchants, and many allied industries throughout the state.
Through special events such as Watermelon Day, we hope to attract

Pattern Ads
Discontinued
The editors regret that it has become necessary to stop publication of all advertisements concerning patterns, instructions, etc. Pattern ads have become frequent and numerous and some advertisers have taken advantage of their advertising privileges in charging unnecessarily high prices for easily copied or obtainable patterns.
However, in our special handicraft editions of the BULLETIN, published in May and November, we will publish advertisements for patterns and instructions as well as other handicraft items not usually published in the regular issues of the BULLETIN.
As time and space permit we hope to print patterns in the MARKET BULLETIN and would appreciate our readers sharing their favorite ones with us.

Applications Of Mirex,

Free Bait, Available To Go.

The fire ant fight is on again. The Georgia Department of Agriculture last week began distributing free mirex bait to county agents for public use. All
county agents should have their bait within the next few days.

Seven Of Nine ACC's
Complete Referendums
Seven of Georgia's nine Agricultural Commodity Commissions have recently completed referendums to determine continuation of their research, promotion and educational programs.
All of the groups voting have reaffirmed overwhelmingly continuation of their programs for an additional three years.
The approvals were as follows: Apples - 94 percent, Cotton - 95 percent, Eggs - 80 percent, Milk - 92 percent, Peaches - 90 percent, Peanuts - 98 percent and Tobacco 97 percent.
Sweet potato producers have not yet tabulated their ballots and the

The bait is available in two pound bags to any farmer or homeowner who needs the bait to treat his own property. Any one wishing to purchase 50 pounds or more of Mirex, may do so direct from the Mississippi Department of Agriculture by contacting that department at P.O. Box 1609, Jackson, Mississippi 39205, ATTENTION Mr. C. C. Fancher, (601) 354-6675.
AERIAL APPLICATIONS The Georgia Department of Agriculture plans aerial applications for fire ant relief the first week in April. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin says bids are being accepted for the aerial treatment of some two million acres of land in East Central and South Central Georgia, involving 18 counties, but new restrictions imposed by federal agencies will carry the aerial program back to the "horse and buggy days" of fire ant control.

COUNTIES INVOLVED The work is being let on two bids. One will involve the South Central Georgia counties of Crisp, Turner,

Aujeszky Or Mad Itch

Describes Hog Disease

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, right, is preparing to cut the ribbon for the opening of the second annual Food and Agricultural Trade Show held in New Orleans recently. Texas Commissioner of Agriculture John White [who has since been named Undersecretary of Agriculture]
holds the ribbon, center, while Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture Gilbert Dozier is shown at the left.

Pseudorabies, also known as Aujeszky's Disease or Mad Itch, is a contagious viral disease of swine and also infects cattle, sheep, dogs, cats, rabbits and possibly several wild animals. Fortunately, man is not susceptible to this disease.
Mad Itch has been the term used to describe this disease in cattle, sheep, dogs and cats because the intense discomfort causes self mutilation through frantic rubbing, biting and scratching followed by coma and death.
Suckling pigs develop an acute fibrile condition and often die within 24 hours of onset. The disease must not be confused with hog cholera, ^T.G.E., colibacillosis and other diseases.
Older swine sometimes abort and may develop encephalitis with symptoms of depression, blindness or possibly convulsions. Swine may

Dear Editor: I was very interested in your article on worms.
Our company agrees with the thrust of the article because there are unscrupulous operators in any fast growing business, or business new to an area.
Worm growing is like any other agribusiness, you work hard to get a return and you must take care of your livestock.
The article is correct in saying that the major market for worms is fish bait. In the Georgia area there is a very small market to Universities and schools for research. A market of similar size is the one for horticulture. These two markets together are about less than one one-thousandth the size of the fish bait market.
One mistake I did notice is the time needed to produce a full size worm for market. A bedrun worm is produced in 90 days, a bait size worm in 140 to 160 days and a full mature red worm in one year.
Presently there are many experiments going on that may determine viable markets in the future. Some of these are recycling hog waste and other organic materials. Fort Valley State College is conducting an experiment in this area as well as the Kohjin Company Limited of Tokyo, Japan. Anyone who says these are now viable markets for earthworms is uninformed.
Besides the enemies listed in the article, others in Georgia include ants, springtails, centipedes, slugs, mites, beetles, snakes, moles, mice and toads feed on or are a nuisance to worms that are not under proper care.
A person planning a worm farm as a commercial venture should give the project the same careful scrutiny that should precede going into any business or investment. Lastly, anyone who is offered a guaranteed price for buyback may want to have the contract examined by the Regional Office of the Securities Exchange Commission to insure the SEC act of 1934 is not being violated.
If we can help you, or anyone interested in the worm business please contact us.

BARLEY BREW
1 bushel barley (use raw, untreated barley) Put barley in baking pan about 1/4 inch deep and roast
approximately two hours at 375 to 400 degrees F. Stir about every 15 minutes to avoid over-roasting. Cool and grind.
Perk like regular coffee. Use 4 tablespoons per 8 cups water.
Mrs. Douglas Wilson Pineview Farm Route 1 Adrian, GA. 31002 Editors Note: Check with your local miller for untreated barley.
I thought some of your readers in South Georgia, North Florida, or thereabouts might be interested in the following recipes:

ARMADILLO AMBROSIA
Take one half-grown or about three-fourths grown young armadillo; clean and prepare for cooking. Place meat in large iron skillet or dutch oven, and par-boil for one-half to one hour with plenty of black pepper and very little salt therein. When somewhat tender to a fork, remove all bones and cut meat into small pieces. Then, cover same with Irish potatoes sliced 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick, cover with thinly sliced onions, add a few drops of Tabasco sauce and one can of tomatoes. Cook slowly until all is well done, and stir constantly to prevent scorching.
APPALACHICOLA ARMADILLO
Use the same recipe as above but, instead of tomatoes, add flour and milk to thicken same to gravy consistency.

ARMADILLO MARIANNA
Take two or more armadillos, prepare for cooking and pressure cook or parboil in dutch oven with one pound of pork ribs, or steaks and one pound of boneless stew beef. Cook, simmer in just enough water to cook until good and tender, then add one large onion sliced very thin, pepper heavily with salt to season; when onions are done, add two quarts whole milk, bring to boil, add one stick margarine, a half bottle of hot sauce and one or two boxes of saltine crackers crushed to chicken to a consistency that you may eat with a fork or spoon.
***
Cuz, you can take it from ole Sawgrass Sam, Catfish Charlie, and Turkey Tom that the above eating is REAL eating! Incidentally, young, tender rabbits added to any of the recipes makes a delightful, tasty change.
Keep up the good works! L. S. Cobb 3590 N. Cook Road Powder Springs, Georgia 30073

Horses, mules, ponies

for sale

In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only. January through April.

CARE OF TIN Tinware, bright and shiny when new, tends to darken with age. Extension home economists say it's actually a better heat conductor after it has darkened. So don't scour tin it might remove the coating and rust the base metal. Instead, wash utensils in suds and rinse well. Be careful to dry the pieces thoroughly.

The Easy Way
For perfect hard-boiled eggs, cover eggs with enough water to come at least one inch above eggs and bring rapidly to boiling. Turn off heat and if necessary set pan off unit to prevent further boiling. Cover, let stand in hot water for 15 minutes. Cool immediately and thoroughly in cold water. This makes shells easier to remove and helps prevent dark surfaces on yolk.

products are non-toxic to people livestock and fish; that they will control all weeds when in fact they will only control some; that they can be used on crops or pastures when actually they may damage or destroy these areas; and that they will curb all weeds for up to three years. Prizes are sometimes offered to the farmer if he will buy. The calls are normally made in the early

The standard unit of temperature measurement in the SI or Metric system is degrees Celsius. The word "Centigrade" is not a part of the metric: system and is obsolete. Please help your readers and print a correction Also, this is obvious to anyone who watches the weather reports on the Atlanta televiskm stations: Celsius is the word. Also, it is now law officially since December 1975, when signed by then-president Ford!
Kudzu, Atlanta It certainly would have helped if you had included your name and address as we like to personally answer these kind of letters Celsius [named after Anders Celsius, a Swedish astronomy professor who lived in the 18th century] is really only a fancier word for centigrade. However, it s supposedly a more accurate, less confusing way of measuring temperature. It s been adopted in Canada and, like the weather sometimes, has slowly o^fted across the border. The Eastern Regional Office of the National Weather Forecast bureau has already started using Celsius readings in its official forecasts, and other centers are expected to follow suit soon. There is even a third method of measuring the temperature - called Kelvin degrees. But, don't worry about that as it's only used in industry.
Ag Department Serves Georgia
The Georgia Department of Agriculture serves farmers and consumers in many ways. One of these is through:
Seed Laboratories
The Department's seed laboratories are among the finest in the nation. Farmers may send seed samples in for testing free of charge and inspectors are constantly pulling samples at wholesale seed houses and sending them in for testing to make sure only quality agricultural seed are sold.

MOSQUITOES Mosquitoes cause the most annoyance to man when he is quiet. People involved in physical activity requiring considerable movement such as running or bike riding are not bothered as much by mosquitoes because the insects are not strong
fliers. Adult female mosquitoes are
bloodsuckers which cause great irritation and annoyance with their bites and "buzzing". The bite itself causes a stinging sensation and there is an immediate swelling of the tissue surrounding the site of the
bite. Many species of mosquitoes over-
winter in the egg stage while others pass the winter as fertilized adults in protected shelters such as hollow trees, outbuildings, washrooms, etc. Some remain in the larval stage and either freeze with the water or lie dormant at the bottom of a puddle, pond, etc. All mosquitoes require water for their larval development. Mosquito larvae are the common "wrigglers" seen in pools and
ponds. To control mosquitoes first elimi-
nate any standing water. Containers such as tin cans, old tires, bird baths, rain gutters, etc. should not be allowed to accumulate water. If standing water cannot be drained and small fish are present, they will consume mosquito larvae if weeds
are not protecting it. Fogging in late evening, night or
early morning will cut the mosquito population and personal repellents
will deter them from biting.

a guarantee that the product will do an effective job in an environmentally safe way. Users should always read and follow label instructions when applying a pesticide," Train said.
Pesticide buyers should make it unmistakably clear to any telephone huckster that they are not interested in and will not pay for the weed control products, the coalition warned. Reports indicate that waivering buyers have sometimes been shipped the pesticides C .O .D.
"The vast majority of pesticide producers and dealers in this country condemn these unethical actions on the part of a dishonest
few," Train said.

What

Tea?

Oswego tea is a native American plant. Its reputation as a "healing herb" had its origin with the Creek Indians who claimed Oswego tea was a stimulating tonic for people weakened by illness.
Oswego tea is also known as Bee Balm, Horse Mint and Wild Bergamot. Its botanical name Monarda Didyma relates to the 16th century Spanish explorer who found the unusual plant and recorded its existence. It grows wild in open meadows from Canada to Florida.
This plant, by whatever name you choose to call it, is a member of the mint family and characteristic to its family its bears the square mint stem. It grows to a height of about three feet, has sharply pointed leaves and a peppery minty smell.
As its common name Bee Balm implies, bees are extremely attracted to it and it makes an excellent planting around hives or other plants'that might not receive the pollination attention they require. The plant has beautiful scarlet, pink or bluish-purple flowers that are often used in fresh or dried arrangements.
Although the tea has been disputed by modern authorities as having no medicinal value, you may want to try a cup of the refreshing brew for a new taste treat. Collecting should begin when the plants start to bloom. Dry the stems for two to three weeks; strip the leaves and blooms. Use about 1 12 teaspoon dried leaves per cup water; sweeten to taste. If you use fresh leaves, use twice as much.

Growing Greenhouse Vegetables

Requires Some Specialization

Growing vegetables in a backyard greenhouse during times when temperatures prevent growing them outside can be a rewarding hobby and supply some fresh vegetables for the family. To be successful in this effort, the grower must have a good knowledge of plant growth requirements and use each of them wisely. The only difference between growing plants inside or outside is that outside, Mother Nature provides many of the plant needs such as good air, water and warmth.

See page 7 for aerial application map of fire ant treatment areas.
Commissioner Irvin said aerial operations are expected to get under way April 7, weather permitting, and that persons who do not wish their properties treated should contact the Entomology Section of the Georgia Department of Agriculture in Atlanta, giving their full name, address and telephone number.
FEDERAL RESTRICTIONS The restrictions will not allow the Department to offer the relief demanded by people in infested areas and Commissioner Tommy Irvin plans to go to Washington to discuss the problem with representatives of the Environmental Protection Agency. Irvin said the new EPA restrictions will permit the use of only small single engine aircraft and guidance by men holding kytoons as compared to the multi-engine aircraft and electronic guidance system used during recent years. He said the 150 foot flight ceiling for the small planes will prevent their providing relief for towns and residential areas under FAA regulations. Irvin further said that the Mirex fire ant bait will be applied at the rate of one pound per acre as compared to 1 1/4 pounds previously and no repeat applications will be permitted, although one pound of bait will constitute less than half a gram of actual chemical Mirex.

have infection with no symptoms at all.
Spread of the disease is by direct contact and dogs and cats should not have access to dead pigs, placentae, or aborted fetuses.
This disease has been on the rampage in Iowa and other Midwestern states in the last year and has caused the death of thousands of baby pigs. Some cases have been confirmed in Georgia and a survey is presently under way to determine the extensiveness of this virus in our state.
If you suspect pseudorabies in your hogs, contact your local veterinarian, county agent or the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

Once you move plants indoors, they immediately become completely dependent on you and usually if you forget one detail, your enterprise will fail. Before one decides to undertake this project, he should understand that he is doing this for a hobby and the satisfaction of producing his own fresh vegetables rather than economical gains. Very few commercial producers of greenhouse vegetables have been successful in Georgia.
What to Grow: Lettuce requires lower temperatures for normal growth than tomatoes, making it difficult, if not impossible, to grow these at the same time in one house. Vegetables which need approximately the same temperatures should be grouped together. Late fall and winter means extended cloudy periods with less sunlight so grow those vegetables that require less sunlight and cooler temperatures. These include leaf lettuce, broccoli, celery, celeriac, green onions, mustard, radishes, and beets. As the days become longer in early spring and temperatures become warmer, replace the cool season species with those requiring warmer temperatures and more sunlight, such as tomatoes, bell pepper, cucumbers, eggplant, and squash.
Pollination: Outside there are bees, insects and wind to carry on Mother Nature's process of pollination. These conditions do not exist inside a greenhouse so this process needs some help. Once pepper, eggplant or tomatoes begin to bloom it is necessary to tap or vibrate the bloom to shake the pollen loose. This must be done each day until a small fruit is seen. With cucumbers, the American types require pollination; whereas, pollination is not necessary for production of the European types. If squash are grown, remember that there are two types of blooms - a male bloom which produces pollen and a female bloom which produces fruit. A small, soft brush can be used to transfer the pollen from the male bloom over to the female bloom.
Disease and Insect Control:
Keeping the greenhouse well-ventilated to maintain a low humidity will reduce disease problems. If you need assistance with insect and disease control, contact your local county Extension office.
Remember, some spray materials, while recommended for outdoor use, are not to be used indoors. When pesticides are used, read the label and follow the instructions stated on the container.
