Insect Control
Big Business
The Georgia Entomological Society will hold its 41st meeting in Albany, on March 16-18, 1977. Since Entomology is the study of insects, we have members who are involved in teaching, research, public health, pest control businesses, chemical companies, even people who are making studies to determine if the "African honey bee" is going to be a problem for people in our country.
The control of insect pests in Georgia is big business. Since World

Entomological Society and its members have been deeply involved in these developments.
We usually have 40-ten minute papers presented at our annual Society meetings. Subjects covered include insect identification, biology, chemical and biological control, integrated pest management and other related topics. Members are anxious to attend our annual meeting for the purpose of getting new information and to present their own programs or research data on insects and insecticides.
In January 1966, our Society printed the first issue of a quarterly scientific publication called the "Journal of the Georgia Entomological Society." Starting with 24 pages, this very valuable and successful Journal now contains 400 pages each year. The publication contains nationally and internationally recognized papers relating to the science of entomology. Issues are mailed to 479 members and 102 libraries in 44 states and 15 foreign countries.

Dear Editor:
Nearly anyone can spend less than $10.00 to purchase 100 feet of 4 mill thickness polyethylene film and two rolls of strapping tape. The film should be three feet wide and will fit most windows. Cut the film one inch bigger than the window on all sides, top, and bottom. Tape snugly the film to the window frame so it is air tight. A saving from ten to fifteen percent may be realized.
If you keep the cold air out and the heated air on the inside your heat is going to accumulate inside, after this temporary glazing, and then you can reduce your thermostat setting.
After the inside windows are done, do the same to the outside. The extreme temperatures we have been having, dictates a dead air cell, that can only be made by two thicknesses as shown. Naturally this presupposes that the building has adequate insulation on the ceiling.

Horses,
mules, ponies
for sale
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.

''Around the Corner I have a friend In this great city that has no end. Yet days go by and weeks rush on, Before I know a year is gone, And I never see my old friend's face For life is a swift and terrible race.
He knows I like him just as well As in the days when I rang his bell. And he rang mine, we were younger then, And now we are busy, tired men Tired of playing a foolish game, Tired of trying to make a name.
Tomorrow, I say, I will call on Jim, Just to show that I'm thinking of him. But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes; Distance between us grows and grows; Around the corner, yet miles away. "Here's a telegram, Sir" - "Jim died today. "And that's what we get and deserve in the end. Around the Corner - A Vanished Friend. Submitted by: Alvin M. Alcoholic Beverages-and Soft Drinks
Soak in cold water, then wash in warm sudsy water. If stain remains in white washables, soak 15 minutes in 1 tablespoon household bleach to 1 quart water. Colored linens should be soaked 30 minutes in 2 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide to 1 gallon water.
Greasy Stains Laundry detergent will remove many greasy or oily stains. Apply directly on the stain and leave several hours. If a cleaning fluid is required, place article right side down on an absorbent pad. Apply cleaner to a clean soft cloth and treat area using a light tapping motion. Move pad frequently to avoid spreading the stain. Let the article air dry, rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of cleaner, and wash.
Commercial Stain Removers Many commercial stain
removers are available to pretreat stained linens. Some are especially good for removing greasy stains from durable press linens. Shake container well before using. Spray stain until entire area is saturated. Let stand a few minutes, then wash. If stain is not removed, continue treatment with another method. DO NOT place in dryer as heat will set the stain.
Blood and Meat Juices Soak in cold water using an enzyme product, then wash in hot sudsy water. Bleach if necessary.
Butter, Mayonnaise, Salad Oil
Remove excess with a dull knife. Treat stain with a laundry pretreatment spray or cleaning fluid. Rinse well and wash in hot suds.

juj Beauty?
Spring beauty or claytonia is often the first little pink or white flower seen blowing in the early spring breezes. The grass-like leaves are thicker and juicier than grass and the tiny pink or white flowers have distinctive red veins in their five petals. They start blooming in March.
The corms or tubers of spring .beauty are edible but are difficult to dig because they grow deep. The corms range in size from a small pea to the size of a marble. They have a unique nutlike flavor that tastes something like a chestnut or chinquapin with the texture of a potato.
Spring beauties multiply like other bulbs. Digging a few corms rarely endangers the species but rather gives them room to increase their number. If they are not growing in mass, however, indiscriminate digging could result in extinction.
Another descriptive name for the plant is fairy spuds derived from the tiny potato-like corms. Naturalists report that the corms can be prepared like new potatoes but hasten to warn that you have to dig a lot of spring beauties to make a meal, a practice they do not advocate.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Insect Control
(Continued From Page 1)
limiting factor in the production and protection of food, fiber and shelter in Georgia and throughout the earth, information in our Journal has become of interest to people outside of our profession.
Dr. H. O. Lund, Entomology Professor Emeritus, has been editor of our Journal since its beginning. An editorial board, composed of five members located throughout the nation, reviews all papers submitted for publication. The board members are recognized authorities in five different areas of entomological work. They each serve a five year term on rotation so that each year the Georgia Entomological Society board of directors must approve a new editorial board member to replace the one who is retiring. This procedure has made our Journal one of the most highly respected scientific publications in the United States.
If by now you haven't gotten the message, let me assure you that we are extremely proud of our profession and our "Georgia Entomological Society."
TIMBER CONTRACT When it comes to selling timber, don't depend on a verbal contract. Forester Ted Walker of the Georgia Extension Service says it usually takes six months to two years to carry out an agreement for cutting timber. "Verbal contracts just won't be remembered that long, so put it in writing." Among points that should be covered in the contract are amounts and times of payments, description of the location, cutting period, and conservation measures.

Poultry Manure

(Continued From Page 1}
and amount of litter. Research work conducted by
the University of Georgia agronomists have shown that the fertilizer value of poultry manure to crops and pastures are approximately equivalent to similar amounts of Nitrogen, Phosphate, and Potash contained in commercial fertilizers.
For instance, in an experiment conducted at the Blairsville Experiment Station, 4 tons of broiler manure containing 160 Ibs. of Nitrogen, 162 Ibs. of Phosphate (P20s) and 110 Ibs. of Potash (K20) produced a yield of 112 bushels of corn per acre. Similar amounts of Nitrogen Phosphate and Potash in a commercial fertilizer produced 120 bushels of corn per acre. The check plot yielded only 50 bushels per acre.
Since most of the Nitrogen
contained in poultry manure is in the Urea form, it should be incorporated into the soil to avoid possible volitization loss. Experiments on surface applied poultry manure to Coastal Bermudagrass showed that the Nitrogen in poultry manure was only about 60 percent as effective as commercial Ammonium Nitrate in in creasing Coastal Bermudagrass yields.
One note of caution, applications of poultry manure to fescue should not exceed 4 tons per acre. Higher rates than this when applied to fescue have been related to animal health problems.
