Society Active
The Georgia Entomological Society is one of the most active and prestegious organizations of its kind in the nation. Its purpose is to foster entomological accomplishment among its members, to promote the welfare of the entire State of Georgia through the encouragement of free discussion, reading and publication of scientific papers, and to disseminate information pertaining to insects.
Some of the activities of the Georgia Entomological Society
include the publication of the Journal of the Georgia Entomological Society - a publication consisting of research results of high scientific merit; annual meetings where members discuss insect problems and where scientific papers are presented; the Insect Survey Committee which gathers information of the occurence, distribution, and economic

potential of insect pests in Georgia; a Legislative Committee which works with state and federal regulatory officials on problems affecting registration of insecticides and certification of insecticide applicators; two scholarship funds which give financial aid to deserving students of entomology; and two awards which recognize outstanding papers presented at the annual meetings.
The Georgia Entomological Society was formed in 1937 at Experiment, Georgia by Mr. Theodore Bissel with C. H. Alden as Chairman of the first meeting and Horace Lund as Secretary. Sixteen persons attended. During the next 12 years the Society remained small and during the World War II year met irregularly, but in 1950 under President John Alden the Society resumed vigorously with 45 members.

Dear Editor:
Being a French Exchange Student, I am staying in New Hampshire until the end of May. My desire, which I'll realize in February or March, is to travel and visit your country. I plan to go down the east coast through Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Florida, etc.
As my principal interest is agriculture, which I shall start to study next year in France, I would really like to know farming life throughout the USA. I thought you might be able to give me the addresses of farms in your state where I could go or even stay one or two days and participate in the farm life and work.
I could learn a lot by such an experience which would bring me some knowledge that I would remember. I have worked on several French farms and many of them have asked about American farms and I desire to give them an answer.

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.

The spider plant (Chlorophytum elatum) is best known for having babies, or more specifically, plantlets. The mother plant produces long stalks on which little plants develop, each with their own root system. Naturally, propagation is very simple because you need only cut the young plant from the mother stalk.
The spider plant does best in hanging baskets where the pendulous stalks of baby plants can hang freely. In its native home of South Africa, the spider plant grows in natural hanging baskets, such as tree limbs and crevices.
As an indoor plant, it is excellent because it tolerates neglect and practically any kind of light condition.

International Show For Export Markets
Georgia agriculture and food companies interested in developing or expanding their export markets are being invited to participate in an International Food and Agriculture Products Trade Show to be held in New Orleans March 4-7, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
Exhibiting along with Georgia firms will be firms from 14 other southern and mid-southern states.
States involved in the upcoming trade show produce 96 per cent of the nation's tobacco exports, 78 per cent of the rice and 53 per cent of the nation's total poultry exports.
Interested agriculture or food production concerns should contact the International Trade section of the Georgia Department of Agriculture in Atlanta.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Purple Martins

divided between males and females. As dusk falls, the babies stop their twittering and snuggle down in the gourd to sleep. Their parents, after combing the area low to the ground
as they did in early morning for remaining insects, slip into a nearby "adults only" gourd for the night. An aspiring martin-keeper, then, should plan on erecting two gourds per bird family: one for babies, one for exhausted parents.
The martins keep up their active schedule until July or early August. Then, when the young are strong enough to fly, the families line up in long rows on telephone wires or gourd-strings and take off on their yearly migration to South America.
Martins travel and live in colonies that usually number from 12 to 100 birds. When they come here, they will apparently select a nesting site only if there are enough gourds to supply each martin pair with a cozy home for itself and its expected offspring. Then, with the combined strength and courage of the flock, martins will fiercely defend their chosen territory. They drive away crows, hawks, and other predatory birds, and thus endear themselves to poultry and small livestock owners.
People keep martins not only as insect-eaters and poultry-protectors, but also for the fun of watching the birds dive and swoop. Others like listening to their high, chirping melody.
High-placed gourds provide some measure of safety for martins from two of their natural enemies: cats and snakes. Cats pounce on martins when the birds circle low at dawn and dusk, searching for low-flying insects. Snakes crawl up poles, invade martin nests, and devour the eggs or young.
Starlings and English sparrows which aren't inhibited by the height of their prey's nest, also kill young martins, and compete for their enticing living-quarters. The martin's only protection, apparently, is in group action. One oldtimer who kept martins noted sagely that when an enemy appears, "These purple martins will gang up on him. They'll chase him out of the country.''
In late summer, when the martins themselves leave the country for their winter stay in South America, there's a moment of sadness for martin-keepers.
"One morning you wake up and realize the martins are gone." signed one martin-keeper. "It's such a lonely feeling."

-2 INCH ' GALVANIZED PIPE 20 FT LONG
S DRAWING IS HEMATIC AND NOT TOSCALE.
Brace Hafley
Martin gourds can be hung from a variety of structures. Anything from a tree with its branches cut off to a telephone pole will do the job provided it's high enough off the ground and erected in an open space. A popular, fairly inexpensive, and durable structure can be built with galvanized pipe and wooden crossarms.
Set a three- to four-foot-long piece of galvanized pipe, two and a half inches in diameter, in the ground in cement. Inside the cylinder fit a second piece of galvanized pipe two inches in diameter and 23 to 24 feet long. At the top of the long pipe bolt two 2" x 4" wooden crossarms seven or eight feet long. Drill holes in the crossarms a foot or so apart.
Select large round gourds with a short neck. The inside of the gourd should be no smaller than eight by eight inches. Cut out a round hole about two inches in diameter for the doorway. This hole should be no more than two inches above the floor of the gourd. Drill three tiny holes in the bottom of the gourd to let water seep through. A martin won't build in a gourd unless the drain holes are there. Drill two holes in the neck of the gourd and insert a piece of wire to hang the gourd on the crossarms.
Several steps are necessary to prepare a gourd for martin visitors. (1) Clean it out thoroughly. (2) Dip it in Clorox to prevent mildew. (3) Put a teaspoon of sulphur inside the gourd, shake it around well and empty out the excess. This will keep out mites. Be sure that the gourd is dry inside when this is done to prevent too much sulphur from sticking to the inside. (4) Finally, apply a clear varnish or a good water resistant paint. A painted gourd will last six or seven years while an unpointed one will not last more than a year.
Horsemen's Seminar
And Short Course

Have Meetings
Seed producers and others interested in seed production in Georgia should mark these dates on their calendars.
The Georgia Crop Improvement Association and Foundation Seeds, Inc., will hold a joint meeting in Athens on February 16 and 17. It is scheduled at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.
The annual peanut seed short course will be at the Rural Development Center, Tifton, on May 20.
Both meetings begin at 9 a.m.

Educational programs for horse breeders and owners will be held at Tifton on February 13 and 14, and in Athens on February 19, 20 and 21. These meetings are designed to provide the latest information on management methods for horsemen. The programs are a joint effort of the Extension Animal Science Department and the Extension Veterinary Department.
A registration fee of $5 per day will be charged to defray the cost of these meetings. Persons wishing to register should contact their county agent or Dr. Charles A. Hutton, Extension Horse Specialist, at Athens.

time have been the formation of the P. W. Fattig Scholarship Fund in 1954, the publication of the Journal of the Georgia Entomological Society beginning in 1966, and the start of the Horace O. Lund Scholarship Fund in 1975.
From modest beginnings the Georgia Entomological Society has attained a size of about 450 members in 34 states, three Canadian provinces, an four other foreign countries. Its members include teachers, researchers, professionals from the pesticide industry, pesticide applicators, regulatory personnel, students, and others with an interest in entomology.
Since 1954 P. W. Fattig Scholarships have been awarded to 24 students. The Journal of the Entomological Society is received in about 120 libraries throughout the world and in 1975 included 57 papers published by authors from 16 states and one foreign country (Australia).
We are truly an international organization but are proud of our Georgia heritage and are truly concerned with helping the Georgian, farmer and city dweller alike, in his quest for a better life and environment through better understanding of insects.
The 1976 annual meeting of the Georgia Entomological Society will be held at the Desoto Hilton Hotel in Savannah, Georgia on March the 17th through the 19th. All members and anyone interested in joining or visiting this society are urged to attend.
The Honorable Thomas T. Irvin, Commissioner of Agriculture for the State of Georgia will be our luncheon speaker March 18th so please make your reservations to attend.
Appetites Curbed
Americans ate less in 1975. Per capita food consumption dropped to the lowest level in seven years. The decline can be traced to the spiraling cost of livestock feed. The high cost of feed led to severe cuts in beef, pork and poultry supplies. Animal food products were less available and consumption dropped two per cent.
