?i|e Cacti?

Organ pipe cacti usually reach a

maximum height of 20 feet and are

useful mainly as background

plantings where climate will permit.

They are also called torch cacti, as

were the candelabra, because they

look like slender torches with a

flame on the end (flowers).

Native to Arizona to Venezuela

and the West Indies, the plants

require lots of sun, lots of water and

minimal temperatures of 30

degrees. They branch from a central

base and the mature plant looks just

like a set of old fashioned organ

pipes.

The Lemaireocereus group of

organ pipes is difficult to grow in the

seedling stage, the only time these

large cacti can be grown as

houseplants. The Trichocereus

group, however, is exceptionally

easy to grow in window gardens.

The white torch cactus (T.

spachianus) is very popular for its

large snowy white flowers and is

commonly used as an understock

for grafting other cacti.

The totem pole cactus, a

collector's favorite, is an adulterated

variety of Lophocereus. It is knobby,

ribless, and spineless and looks as

if it were carved out of a piece of

green soap.

Fertilizer Situation

Appears Improving

After several hectic years of
accelerating prices and large scale shortages, Georgia's fertilizer situation for the coming year appears to be improving.
In a random sample of Georgia fertilizer manufacturers and dealers, Jim Bergeaux, a fertilizer specialist with the Cooperative Extension Service, found an adequate supply of mixed fertilizer and fertilizer materials for the 1977 crop year. While the manufacturers anticipate no shortages or major price increases in the near future, several conditions in the individual fertilizer industries could change that. Fourteen new nitrogen plants were found ready for '77 production, with most having firm natural gas commitments. Supplies of natural gas, the key material in the production of nitrogen fertilizer, appear to be adequate. But a hike in gas price plus other increasing production costs could drive the cost of nitrogen fertilizer up 5 to 10 percent. However, the increase to consumers may be diminished because of more than adequate nitrogen supplies.
Phosphate fertilizer appears adequate. So much so that some phosphate plants have curtailed production in the face of mounting inventories.
While potash supplies appear sufficient throughout 1977, the threats of nationalization of American potash mines in Canada could influence both price and supply later.
Even though American potash companies will probably increase amounts of potash mined in New Mexico, dwindling potash reserves will limit their efforts.

Form Survey

Gets Underway

For Georgia

Mrs. Mary Stewart of Garden City was the winner of the Best Decorated Pumpkin Contest which was held recently at the Savannah State Farmers 1 Market's "Fall Fair". More than 30,000 people attended this event. Many other contests were held during the two day affair, such as the greased pig contest and the milking contest. This was the first such event to be held on the Savannah Market and hopefully it will become an annual event.
Genealogical Meet
The Georgia Genealogical Society will meet on Saturday, December 4 at 12 noon, at Valle's Steak House, 2575 Forrest Hills Drive S.W. in Atlanta, near the Cleveland Avenue exit of 1-75. Ted Brooke will speak on "There's a Goldmine of Family History Information in Them Thar Wills." Reservations for the meeting may be made by mailing a check for $6.00 to Georgia Genealogical Society, P. O. Box 38066, Atlanta, Georgia 30334.

The latest estimates of cattle, calf crop, hogs, and chickens on farms, the expected pig crop, and winter wheat production in 1977 will hinge on a major nationwide survey set for late November and early December by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Estimates developed from this annual survey are always useful to those making decisions in agriculture. The information aids producers, processors, planners, and others in managing output and marketing operations. Of particular interest in the coming estimates will be the affect of the large harvest of feed grains on farmers plans for fall plantings and inventories of cattle and hogs. The estimates will be available through the Georgia crop reporting service office in Athens in late December for wheat and hogs, in late January for poultry, and early February for cattle. The survey results rely on cooperation from thousands of producers in this state and across the country who willingly respond to mail questionnaires and participate in personal interviews. Producers visited by local USDA representatives serve as a cross section of all the nation's farmers. All responses are kept confidential and only state and national summaries are published.

Dear Editor:

I read about "What Is Cactus" and how through

evolution they grew stems and in defense of plant

eating animals the cacti developed spines.

That is a very interesting development and is in

line with Darwin's theory of evolution that he saw

and wrote about when he visited the Galapagos

Islands. The prickly pear cactus grows on some of

these islands and ordinarily takes the form of a low-

spreading shrub. On the Galapagos, however, they

grew tired of being eaten by the giant tortoises and

mammoth iguana lizards so through evolution they

grew a trunk sheathed with spines which as they

mature change to a thick orange back with the

leaves and fruit growing at the top of the trunk.
