Formers Who Use Pesticides
Farm Facts Goin9 Back To Schoo/ /fl Nov-

Important
With current interest high concerning availability of food and fiber, farm facts become very important. The producer needs to know. The processor needs to know and the consumer needs to know. The Georgia Crop Reporting Service, SRS-USDA, cooperating with the Georgia Department of Agriculture strives to provide these needed farm facts. They are important to you.
Cash receipts for Georgia farmers reached the $2.2 billion mark in
1975. During the first half of 1976, this increase has I continued at '< about the 6% level. During this period the increases in cash receipts from poultry, livestock and their products have more than offset the decrease in cash receipts Georgia farmers received from crops. The farmers' costs have continued to rise in 1976. The October crop report indicated a production larger in 1976

Office Building, Athens, Georgia 30601.)
than for the previous year for corn, wheat, oats, barley, rye, cotton, peaches and apples but smaller production for grain sorghum, soybeans, peanuts, hay, sweet potatoes, tobacco and pecans.
We are now preparing to make the end-of-year surveys to finalize the production indications we've used prior to harvest. These end-of-year surveys not only finalize production facts for 1976 but give a look at prospects for 1977.
The estimates of cattle, calf crop, hogs and chickens on farms, the expected pig crop and winter wheat production in 1977 will hinge on surveys conducted in late November and December.
The survey results rely on cooperation from thousands of producers in Georgia who voluntarily respond to mail questionnaires and participate in personal interviews.

Georgia's farmers, at least those who use a restricted group of pesticides on their crops, will be going back to school in November to obtain certification which will authorize them to purchase and apply hazardous chemicals.

The project is a joint venture with the Cooperative Extension Service and that county extension agents would handle the instruction.
The certification program, which is required under 1975 amendments to the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act, has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency with a deadline of October 21, 1977. Georgia had the distinction of being the first state in the nation to get a plan approved, and early this month a survey showed that six states still had not had a plan accepted by EPA.
Earlier, there had been sharp controversy over the certification process with Irvin insisting that
Wire Grass Arts
The outdoor atmosphere of the State Farmers Market, Tifton, will provide the backdrop for the colorful and original creations to be exhibited by more than 100 artisans participating in the second annual Wiregrass Arts and Crafts Show on Saturday and Sunday, November 13 and 14.
Sponsored jointly by the Exchange Club of Tifton and the Tifton Art Association, the exhibition is attracting artists and craftsmen from all parts of Georgia and six other states.
Stop Sale Notice
The Department of Agriculture has issued stop sale notices on six brands of commercial antifreeze scheduled for sale in Georgia this winter.
Cameo, Freeze Guard, Zero, Prestex, Winter Guardian and Warco antifreeze did not pass state requirements when tested by the State Fuel Oil Laboratory. Three of the brands failed the corrosion test, two were composed mainly of salt and one failed the reserve alkalinity test.
Under specifications approved in November, 1975, to implement the 1975 antifreeze law passed by the General Assembly, sixty-nine brands have been approved for sale in Georgia.

there be no rigid academic tests and training programs which might burden farmers with needless red tape. He also opposed any type of mandatory pass-fail written exams, holding out for courses featuring lectures and oral instruction.
Under the amendments, Irvin pointed out, the EPA is required to separate pesticide chemicals into two basic classes general use and restricted use. The training courses, which are free to those who enroll, will deal solely with the latter group.
"General use chemicals," Irvin explained, "are those which can be safely handled by housewives, farmers or others, without special training. Restricted chemicals are those which can be handled only by trained and qualified people because they could be dangerous if carelessly applied.
Those who complete the course will receive a certificate showing them to be qualified. The training will include instruction in understanding pesticide labels, interpreting formulations, safety and first aid procedures, methods of application, environmental hazards, recognition of pests and pesticide laws and regulations.
History Making Days
For Cattle Business
December 6 and 7 will be history making days in the cattle business. The great foundation herd of the Charolais breed will be dispersed at auction at the ranch near Georgetown, Texas.
Founded in 1942 by the late Fred W. Turner, the 4T Ranch has provided the basic foundation for thousands of herds of Charolais on the North American continent.
Nearly 700 lots of Charolais and Charbray will be offered. Headquarters will be the famous old Stage Coach Inn in Salado, Texas.
For more information contact Harvey Corn or Andy Williams at 4T Ranches Ltd., 1600 West 38th Street, Austin, Texas 78731. Phone: 512-459-4229.

Means To You
In 1917 the FARMERS MARKET BULLETIN was first published, primarily as a means for farmers to buy, sell and swap their products and their equipment. Today, this is still the primary purpose of the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN even though the scope has been expanded to include consumers.
Each year as we prepare for our budget presentation to the legislature, the question arises: Wonder how much the BULLETIN means to the state's economy? We wonder how many of you were able to buy and sell merchandise through the BULLETIN that you would not have otherwise. Does the BULLETIN help you financially? Please help us answer some of these questions so that we may continue to serve you AND possibly through your answers find ways to provide an even better service.
On page 5 is a questionnaire we would like for you to fill out and mail to us. You need not sign your name. No attempt will be made to determine who replied and who did not. However, we need to hear from as many of you as possible in order to get a good cross section and indicator of our usefulness.
Please take a few minutes to help us help you. Send the form to: F&CMB, P. O. Box 38110, Atlanta 30334. Please send your response by December 1, 1976.
Tree Seedlings

Any Georgia resident may obtain a seedling price list and order blank from their local County Forestry Unit, Soil Conservation Service, or local A.S.C.S. office.

for sale
In order.,to qualify to .advertise horses, hfrse farmers shaMd have had the/livestock advertised in their .possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

What 9* Cacti?
The candelabra cacti in clude some of the largest cacti in the world. The strong, ribbed columnar cacti 'branch from thick stems to make a tree-like plant resembling a giant can delabra. These stronggrowing plants of easy culture make excellent outdoor plantings in areas where temperatures do not fall below 20 degrees.
They produce a multitude of blooms on the tips of their stems. Although the plants can reach a size of 60 feet or more and weigh more than a ton, such growth usually takes a century or two. So in the meantime, these cacti make interesting houseplants that are easy to grow.
The Saguaro cactus (Carnegia gigantea) is probably the most famous famous candelabra. As the Arizona state flower it is a huge plant. As a houseplant specimen it is quite tame and thrives within the confines of a clay pot.
