Food Processors
Aid Georgians
The Southeastern Food Canners & Freezers Association is a new organization whose members are food processors in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, and whose associate members are suppliers of equipment, goods and services to the members. The organization serves Georgia Consumers and Georgia farmers.
The regional association was formed in 1974 as the successor to a
state canners organization. Its objectives are to provide its members with information pertaining to governmental actions affecting the canning and freezing industry; to supply its members with information pertaining to technological and business trends; to promote a better understanding of the food industry; to further the re-

search and educational interests of its members; and to foster and preserve within the industry a feeling of responsibility for rendering maximum service to the public.
About half of our members are Georgia companies. All of our members buy raw products or sell processed products in Georgia. The current membership of fifty firms includes fruit and vegetables canners and freezers, seafood canners, meat canners and poultry canners.
Our members believe that although products and processes may vary there are many areas of common interest and concern in which all can benefit by association and common action. By helping its member processors do a better job, the association will also better serve the public.
One of the major challenges to the industry today is the increasingly costly burden of federal and state legislation regulating such activities as processing methods, packaging information, record keeping, waste water disposal, and employee safety

Go. Legislature
Bill To Provide
EPA Compliance
In 1972, the U.S. Congress passed the Environmental Pest Control Act which, among other things, called for the certification of all persons applying certain restricted pesticides. The Act required individual farmers as well as commercial applicators to be certified by October of 1976 or they could not purchase restricted pesticides.
This year, Congress delayed the effective date of this Act by one year, October, 1977.
Today, the Georgia Legislature with its excellent agricultural leadership in the House and Senate, has introduced legislation which will make it possible for Georgia farmers to comply with this federal law with as little trouble and interruption of work as possible.
Although the Georgia Department of Agriculture fought this EPA Control Act, the department has worked diligently since the Act first became law to be prepared so our farmers and applicators would suffer as little as possible from its ramifications.
In fact, Commissioner of Agricul-

Go. Vet Advisory Board

Reports On Animal Industry

The Veterinary Advisory Board was created by- the 1975 General Assembly to work with the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia in an advisory capacity. It has been organized, has held several meetings and is working closely with the University, with the Georgia Department of Agriculture and with the General Assembly.

Tree Seedlings
Available Again
Due to cancellation of some orders, the Georgia Forestry Commission has a limited number of loblolly and slash pines, catalpa, red cedar, sawtooth oak, Virginia pine, sweet gum and yellow poplar tree seedlings for sale to Georgia landowners, on a first come first serve basis.
The cost per thousand trees is loblolly and slash pines, $7; Virginia pine, $8; Jcatalpa, sweet gum and yellow poplar, $15; and red cedar and sawtooth oak, $20.
Tree seedling application forms may be obtained by calling 912744-3243 or from Forestry Commission County Rangers, County Agents, Soil Conservation Service Technicians and Agricultural Conservation Program Officers.
For further assistance contact your local county forest ranger.

The first report of the Veterinary Advisory Board lists the following summary comments:
CONCLUSIONS
1. Animal disease research has been neglected resulting in unnecessary losses to producers and to tax receipts at all levels, and to higher costs to consumers.
2. The lack of funds to develop a continuous research program in animal agriculture has contributed
(This article was prepared especially for the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN by Abit Massey, Executive Secretary, Veterinary Advisory Board.)
to the shortage of veterinarians in rural areas.
3. Many highly qualified Georgians are denied admission to Vet College because more than half the student body must be from out of state and the number applying each year is many times the number of spots available to Georgians.
4. Predictions are for an even greater shortage of veterinarians.
5. Facilities and staff are limited considering the importance of animal agriculture, the extremely large number of applicants and the need for veterinarians.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The Veterinary Advisory Board and Advisory Council met recently with Governor George Busbee. The groups, representing all segments of animal agriculture, work with the College of Veterinary Medicine and the General Assembly on policies and programs. Left to right are Dr. Charles Dobbins, Dr. Herman Westmoreland, Dean Dave Anderson, Bill Moore, Abit Massey, Rudolph Clark, Governor George Busbee, Lee Arrendale, Dr. O. E. Sell, Dr. J. T. Mercer, John A. "Red" Smith and Leo Moore.

1. The Veterinary Medical Experiment Station, created in 1973, but not funded, should be identified as one of the budget units under the Board of Regents.
2. The Veterinary Medical Experiment Station should be adequately funded. $1,000,000 is not unrealistic considering the importance of the livestock and poultry industries, Georgia's growing horse population and pet industries.
3. Research in animal agriculture is essential also to obtain additional instructional information; train students and graduate students, expose them to the importance and opportunities in animal agriculture in Georgia, and provide continuing education

Dear EditorSeveral years ago I was pestered with roach bugs,
but I have found that borax will kill these bugs. Sprinkle it on shelves and in corners where they stay and in about two weeks they will be gone. I hope this will help people who are bothered with
them. Mrs. Ray Saxon Route 4 Cleveland, Georgia 30528

(Editor's note: Our Entomology Division endorses this remedy as a good one for home roach control. You can substitute boric acid for borax.)

Aloe vera is one of the few

ancient plants that has been

recognized by modern day medicine

as having true medicinal properties.

The gelatinous sap or juice con-

tained in the fleshy leaves of the

Aloe has a coagulating ingredient

which enables a cut leaf to heal

itself almost immediately.

It is this same substance which

soothes and heals wounds and

burns on human skin. The most

remarkable discovery, however, has

been its effective use in the

treatment of radiation burns.

Aloe is referred to in the Old and

New Testament but scholars believe

that the same name applies to two

different plants.

The Aloe of the New Testament is

thought to be a close relative of the

Aloe vera or burn plant pictured

above. The blue-gray leaves of Aloe

succotrina contain aloin, a sub-

stance used with sweet-smelling

incenses to embalm the dead in

Bibical times, as referred to in John

19:39.

The Aloe of the Old Testament

was really a tree (Numbers 24:6)

and not related to the Aloe family.

Aquilaria agallocha, often called

eaglewood, had a particularly

sweet-smelling wood (Psalms

45:7,8). It was used frequently as a

setting for precious stones.

There is a legend that the aloe

lign was the only tree descended to

man from the Garden of E'den.

Supposedly, Adam took a shoot of

the tree with him when he and Eve

were banished from the Garden. To

this day, all trees of this variety are

called "shoot of paradise" and

"paradise wood."

The Board is filling a key role in coordinating important segments of Georgia's economy. Animal agriculture is a major part of Georgia agriculture as high as 58.1% in 1973 over a billion
dollars in 1974 and 1975. The annual direct loss from
animal diseases in Georgia is over $130,000,000. This is almost a third more than losing our entire cotton crop plus all of our pecans and
every peach in the state.
A formula of the National Academy of Sciences place our total annual animal disease losses, direct and indirect, at the staggering figure of $325,000,000 -
almost as much as losing our entire pecan crop along with the peaches
and pecans. It is almost as much as losing our entire tobacco and soybean crops or losing every penny from corn for two years.
All of the commodities mentioned are extremely important to Georgia and this startling comparison indicates the need for more disease research for use by broiler, egg, milk, beef, pork and turkey producers.
The need to feed the world adequately is potentially the most pressing problem facing mankind today. Food shortages have caused revolutions.
Legislative committees and others have cited the critical need for more veterinarians in Georgia, particularly in rural areas. A national report, New Horizons for Veterinary Medicine, predicted that the southeast will need 11,861
veterinarians by 1980 and have no more than 9,000 to 9,400. Others have expressed similar concern for

our state, region and the nation even with the number of graduates increasing.
It has been reported that, nationally, only 15% of the qualified applicants are being accepted by Vet Colleges, compared to 42% by medical schools. It is important for more Georgians to be accepted at our own Veterinary College.
After the preliminary screening processes are completed and evaluated, there still are six fully qualified Georgians wanting each spot now open to a Georgia resident. We need more Georgia students and need to give them ample exposure and training in all phases of animal agriculture.
We are grateful for the expanded facilities that have been provided for the Vet College and pledge full support to the General Assembly and University System in full utilization for a greater Georgia.

Georgia Honey
Honey produced in Georgia during 1975 totaled 4.3 million pounds, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. This is a 16 percent increase over the 1974 crop of 3.7 million pounds.
Go. Legislature
(Continued From Page 1)
ture Tommy Irvin prevailed upon the Environmental Protection Agency and convinced them not to make a test for all farmers mandatory but to allow a four hour course to be accepted for certifica-
tion. This certificate is good for five years without renewal. Further, Georgia was the first state to have its certification plan approved by EPA.
By providing legislation in this 1976 ^session, Georgia farmers will be able to take the four hour course during the slow winter months instead of having to be away from their farms during peak planting or harvesting months.
If the Georgia legislators had delayed legislation until next year, little time would be allowed and some farmers might be inconvenienced or late in being certified.
However, the Georgia bill does provide that Georgia farmers will not be required to comply with the EPA Act unless and until federal law requires it.
It was at first thought that the pesticides deemed restricted would not effect many Georgia farmers. It now appears, however, that most all Georgia farmers will be effected.
The fotir hour training course will be held in each county by the County Agent through the cooperation of the Cooperative Extension Service and the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
