Ag Research In
The Mountains
The Georgia Mountain Branch Experiment Station is located in the foothills of the Appalachians in Union County near Blairsville. Its primary function is to serve the citizens of the mountains and surrounding counties. However, some experiments also have statewide and regional application.
Through the years this Station has endeavored to maintain
communication with the area citizenry. Information is made available by individual or group visits to the Station, by correspondence and phone, through publications, by tours and field days, and by research and demonstrations on farmer fields. Good relations are maintained with all agricultural agencies. Thirty scientists from the Main Georgia Experiment Stations, the

Agricultural Research Service, and the Extension Service are conducting research under 26 projects at this location.
Plant breeders use the winter temperature extremes to screen crops and varieties for cold tolerance. Researchers utilize the ideal growing season to evaluate crops for yield potential and other characteristics. Forage studies illustrate the importance of keeping grass short to improve quality and to maintain clover stands.
No-till planting enables farmers to row crop land unsuitable for conventional tillage and enhance the possibilities for double cropping. A three year stockering program utilizing fescue-clover pasture and corn silage has shown a good profit and is gaining acceptance by area cattlemen.
Earlier work on black rot control of apples did much to save this industry for North Georgia. Minimum use of pesticides on apples gives

Farm Estate Planning Vital

To Prevent Tragic Results

They call it the "widow's tax." Although you may not be a widow,

the grim fact is that you could be. Unless you are one of those

fortunate few who have worked things out with the proper legal, tax

and financial advisors, you may find yourself up against a brick wall

and your farm up for sale.

The concept of employing an

The Georgia Forestry Commission has a good supply of Slash, Loblolly, Longleaf, Eastern White and Virginia Pine seedlings. Hardwoods include yellow poplar, catalpa, sweetgum, cottonwood and dogwood. Red cedar

a financial monster for many.
The farm estate settlement process normally takes from nine months to five years. Many
expenses are levied against the farmer's estate, including federal
and state estate or inheritance taxes, attorney, accountant and appraiser fees, funeral expenses, and, of course, those numerous
other unforeseen expenditures. This actual cash outflow could
reach as high as 77 percent although the normal is 30 - 40
percent. If there is not sufficient liquidity to pay these taxes, a forced sale of assets is often necessary to simply meet ex-
penses. It is a known fact that farm property cannot be readily
converted into cash without some

Dear Editor: The BULLETIN has made my summer for me. I
read a small note in it a few months ago to the effect that Borax is one thing that roaches don't like. I promptly went to the grocery store and bought the biggest box I could find and amazingly, after being plagued for years with roaches of all sizes and descriptions, the roaches left after generously putting out the Borax powder.
There are woods behind my house and before Borax there was a constant stream of the monsters from the woods to the house, crawling over doorsills, down the chimney, etc., etc. This is the first summer in 21 years we have been roach-free thanks to the BULLETIN.
Mrs. Edgar C. Gentry 2654 El (wood Dr. NE Atlanta, Georgia 30305
P.S. Leaving Borax around also seems to cure that particular odor one associates with roaches.

Horses,
mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.

All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Venus fly trap is an amazing plant. It feeds itself!
The venus fly trap is an in sectivorous perennial meaning that it catches insects and by means of digestive juices absorbs the critter lock-stock-and-barrel. Its size varies from eight to twelve inches, usually no more.
The means by which it catches its prey is unique. The rosette of basal leaves are hinged and edged with spines along the outer edge. There are three sensitive hairs on each of the two lobes which serve to trigger the trap. When an insect happens to touch these hairs, the trap snaps shut with the marginal bristles fitting together like the fingers of one's folded hands.
Venus fly trap is a native American plant but it is only found in the swamplands of the southeast. If growing in the sun the leaves take on a reddish cast; if grown in the shade the leaves are green. When it blooms in late spring, a cluster of small white flowers appear on a slender stalk several inches above the leaves.
Although the plant can suc cessfully be grown outside the swamp it does need a humid atmosphere such as a greenhouse or terrarium. Unfortunately the plant is usually worked to death as a novelty so its life span away from the swamp is limited.

satisfactory control of insects and diseases and reduces the contamination of the environment. Current work on apples emphasizes fungicides, herbicides, growth regulators and tree training.
Two companies are contracting red bell peppers in the area and several farmers are selling green peppers. Current work on pepper is centered on growth regulators and herbicides as a layby application. Several ornamental crops are being screened for potential economic importance.
We, the personnel of the Mountain Station, are proud to be a part of a statewide organization dedicated to serving the citizens of Georgia.

Who should be a part of the farm estate planning team? Attorneys (those familiar with estate planning), trust officers and insurance advisors are certainly vital.
It is not a matter of who will pay the taxes, but rather how they will pay.
