Forage Feeding
Beef Cattle
The Central Georgia Branch Experiment Station is located in the lower Piedmont region near Eatonton in an area that has gone from row crops to forage and cattle, both dairy and beef. The Station's primary objective over the years has been research with beef cattle, forage crops, and other agronomic crops. The Station's location and extensive acreage puts it in a position to provide facilities for research scientists to develop programs for an area of the state populated by parttime farmers, living on small farms in labor deficient areas with inadequate harvesting equipment.
The Station's research effort concerns the development of live-
stock programs for small and large operators programs which would enable the farmer to invest a major portion of his capital in land and cattle and a minimum in equipment and labor. The major research at the present places emphasis on the development

of forage production systems for year round feeding of beef cattle and grazing programs for the production
of stocker calves by the evaluation of fescue, Bermuda, wild grasses, and clover alone or in combination
in various management systems.
The various systems are managed to provide high quality forage by close grazing, minimum inputs, and maximum forage utilization. The production of 1,000 to 1,100 pound slaughter cattle predominantly on grass rations of winter grazing alone or supplemented with grain or finished on white and arrowleaf clovers to an acceptable product (grading good to low choice), rounds out the comprehensive forage feeding program of the Station.
As a result, one may expect to finish cattle on forage at a considerable savings over grainfinished cattle. Thus, the beef producer may choose what alter-

BUTZ HOLDS UP
PEANUT MONEY,
SUIT PENDING
"A federal court suit filed by Southeastern peanut shellers and other interested parties has provided a platform for political hanky-panky and manipulation of the peanut price support program by Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz.
"Unless the suit is withdrawn or settled quickly, it will create utter chaos and cost Georgia peanut farmers millions of dollars," Tommy Irvin said regarding the dilemma.
As the MARKET BULLETIN went to press Thursday, August 26, Butz had bowed, in part to a
request of Commissioner Irvin, Senator Herman Talmadge, Congressman Dawson Mathis and others made on August 18, that the Georgia-Florida-Alabama Peanut Association be allowed to accept, grade and pay farmers at least a portion of their money for their peanuts.
Just before press time, Butz had agreed for GFA to accept, grade, warehouse and issue storage receipts for peanuts but continued to refuse payment of any money to peanut growers until the suit is settled or withdrawn. Irvin pointed out that

Minimum Of Time, Trouble
Required For Fall Garden
A fall garden can supply fresh vegetables well into the fall months with a minimum of trouble and time. Supply water as needed, use pesticides properly and fertilize according to recommendations for a reward of tender vegetables in a season when few persons are
enjoying such delicacies.
In North Georgia any of the green leafy vegetables, such as beets, broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, mustard and turnips, and onion may be enjoyed.

Stop Sale Order
On Garden Spray
The Georgia Department of Agriculture has put a state-widfe stop sale order on all aerosol cans of Spectracide garden insect spray and Spectracide rose and flower spray due to the discovery of empty and partially filled cans.
More than four hundred cases of garden insect spray and rose and flower spray were found short weighted.
Department inspectors are now checking garden shops and wholesale houses throughout the state to insure that all such

S. Georgia In South Georgia any of these vegetables as well as those
normally grown earlier in the north may be enjoyed. These
include beans, cucumbers, squash
and tomatoes. Set only healthy, disease-free
plants. Transplant them immediately after they are pulled from the plant bed. After setting, water them thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots and exclude air. After the water has penetrated the soil completely, cover the wet surface with dry soil.
Broccoli This crop is hardy and will withstand frosts. It is a relatively new crop in American gardens, but has been grown by Europeans for hundreds of years. Grow it the same way as you do cabbage. Grow plants in a box in the house for four weeks, then set them in the garden as early as the soil can be worked. A fall crop can be seeded in the garden and thinned or transplanted to 18-24 inches. It takes four weeks to grow plants and about

Dear Editor: I hope you can settle a dispute my friend and
I are having. Joe says you should water the garden in the evening but I say anytime is the right time - water's water. Don't you agree?
Name withheld by request
(Editor's note: Sorry, Joe's right! The time of day you water the garden can kill it or make it flourish. The best time is in the cool of the evening when the soil can absorb the water all through the night. The worst time to water is in the heat of the day. Water on foliage acts like a mirror to the sun's rays and can actually burn the leaves. Also, the water is quickly evaporated so it does little good.)

Horses,
mules, ponies for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare
will ask to see the papers first. In order to qualify to advertise
horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in
their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through
this publication. All horses offered for ad-
vertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60
days. On recommendation of the State
Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Showing Prize Hogs
Fall Planting
Its An Ag-Fact
Is Family Affair
Not only did the Lincoln County 4-H Club hog the winnings at the llth Annual Northeast Georgia Junior Market Hog Show/Sale held in Athens recently, but two sisters and their cousin from the Lincoln County team took the
three top prizes. Flint Matthews, whose Duroc
barrow was named Grand Champion, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mac Matthews of Lincolnton and
is in the 6th grade. Not to be outdone by their
cousin, Robyn and Lynn Matthews took the next two top honors with their Yorkshire-
Hampshire Cross hogs. Robyn won Reserve Champion
while Lynn was named Senior
Champion Showman. Both girls are the daughters of
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Matthews of Lincolnton. Robyn is in the 6th grade and Lynn in the 10th.
Although not related to the Matthews, Richard Butler took another first place for the Lincoln County team. Richard's Yorkshire-Hampshire Cross hog won him the Junior Champion
Showman award.
Seed Association
Elects Officers
Richard Gunter, Augusta, was elected President of the Georgia Seedsmen's Association.
Other officers elected to serve are: A. B. Carlan, First Vice President; Larry Spooner, Second Vice President and Roy Jones, was re-elected Secretary and Treasurer.
Seed Certified
The Georgia Crop Improvement Association field inspected and approved for certification approximately 20,000 acres of fall planted crops. The seed from this acreage is now being processed, treated, bagged, tested, tagged and distributed to the seed trade.
The laboratory reports received to date show the quality of the seed to be good to excellent. Many lots are germinating in the low nineties with some going above 95 per cent. For additional information on this seed, contact your local seed dealer, your county agent or the Georgia Crop Improvement Association for a list of growers.
Massey Elected VP
Abit Massey, executive director, Georgia Poultry Federation, has been elected senior vice president of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).
ASAE is the society for more than 6,000 executives who manage leading business, professional, educational, technical and industrial associations.
Dr. Harris Awarded
Dr. Haskell Harris, plant breeder, Georgia Experiment Station, Experiment, was awarded a lifetime honorary membership in the Georgia Seedsmen's Association at its annual meeting held recently. Dr. Harris received the award for his outstanding contribution and advancement to Georgia's grain sorghum and soybean program.
FIRES KILL Fires kill over 12,000 people each year in the United States. And they seriously injure over 2 million more. A fire breaks out in a home every 45 seconds and claims a life every 44 minutes. Home fire kill more children under age 14 than all of the children's diseases combined.
BIG BREAKFAST? There's no fixed rule on how big breakfast should be, but it's a good idea to have at least onefourth of you daily food during the early-morning meal.
FOOD INDUSTRY Fast-food places, predominantly hamburger oriented, account for almost a third of the restaurants in the U.S. food service industry.
HIGH PROTEIN When you are cooking highprotein foods such as meat, eggs, and milk, use a low temperature for best result.
EAT BREAKFAST "Eat a good breakfast." Those words are not "just a lot of baloney." Studies show that workers who eat a good meal before going to work get more done than those who skip breakfast. The same goes for homemakers, weight watchers, and everyone else. Even children do better in school if they eat well in the morning.

The tree of heaven is a city tree because it will grow in adverse conditions intolerable to other flora. Smog, fog, pollution as well as concrete, brick and asphalt do not discourage the determined tree. Poor soil, exhaust fumes and neglect seem to be the magic formula to produce a tree from 50 to 75 feet tall with a trunk up to three feet in diameter.
On the negative side, however, the tree of heaven does have a few characteristics that take away from its virtue. Its main drawback is that when it blooms in early summer the flowers emit a most disagreeable and unpleasant odor. Some folk say the smell isn't so bad when both male and female trees grow nearby but most people think that it's unpleasant enough to not cultivate the tree.
Also, because Ailanthus altissima is a fast growing tree it is soft and easily breaks in high winds. On the positive side, however, it is practically impervious to foliage pests and disease.
You may well wonder how in the name of heaven did the tree of heaven get established in this country. Many years ago some well-intended horticulturists (probably friends of the kudzu importers) brought Ailanthus to this country from China because of its ability to withstand unfavorable growing conditions.
The trees met all their expectations and more. They not only thrived but multiplied by bountiful seed crops and extensive root systems. In many places they have become a nuisance, more of a forest weed than a decorative tree, and should not be planted if any other vegetation will survive.

Fall Garden
(Continued From Page 1]
eight weeks to produce a crop after that.
Broccoli can be harvested until the middle or latter part of November in North Georgia and probably throughout the winter in South Georgia. The edible portion consists of a loose flower head on a tall, green, fleshy, branching stalk. Cut the stalks before the flowers open while heads are firm and compact. New stalks will form in the leaf axils.
Cabbage
Cabbage can be planted in the row with broccoli, cauliflower or collards. Space the plants 12 to 15 inches apart in the row. Have several plantings throughout the season.
Carrots
Carrots are an excellent source of carotene, which is converted to Vitamin A in the body. They are rather easy and quick to grow, require only a small area and 60 to 80 days to mature. Use 1/2 ounce of seed per 100 feet of row. Cover seed 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. Thin the plants to two inches apart. Have the soil deep and well prepared so roots will have depth to grow and develop fully. This crop is not attacked by many insects or diseases.
Mustard and Turnips
About 1/4 to 1/2 ounce of seed will plant 100 feet of row. Cover seed 1/3 to 1/2 inch deep in rows 15 inches apart. Thin plants to three to four inches apart. Sow seed thickly so that seedlings are 1/2 to 1 inch apart. Allow them to grow until plants are about seven inches tall. Harvest by thinning plants. Remaining plants can be harvested by removing large leaves, allowing the buds to remain. You can get two or three additional harvests in this manner.
Turnips and mustard do not thrive well in the summer heat.
Beets
Good quality red beets can be produced in the garden early. Plant one ounce of seed per 100 feet of row and thin to two to four inches. Cover the seed with about 1/2 inch of soil.
Begin in Fall For Spring
Begin soil preparation in the fall for next spring turning the soil deep to bury litter in the bottom of the furrow. Fall preparation will insure proper soil conditions for early spring planting and will help decompose litter.
Take a soil test at this time to determine fertilizer and lime requirements. Your county agent can instruct you in proper soil sampling procedures and will provide you with materials and information on getting soil tests made. He will also make recommendations, based on soil test results, on the kind and amount of fertilizer and lime to use.
Powers crossroads Country Art Fair

A visit to Powers Crossroads is a step back into the informality of bygone days in a setting unduplicated by other festivals. The Festival is located 10 miles southwest of Newnan on Georgia 34. Gates will be open from 9 AM to 7 PM.
Stop Sale Order

Spectracide sprays manufactured by Ciba-Giegy Corporation of Greensboro, N.C. are withheld from public sale.
Most of the cans checked ranged from five up to 16 oz. gross weight, although the label indicated 15 oz. of contents and a 20 oz. gross weight. The average home gardener would find it difficult to recognize a five oz. shortage.
Pointing out that ther aerosol cans were sold primarily in urban areas, Commissioner Tommy Irvin urged gardeners in Georgia towns and cities not to buy any Spectracide garden insect spray or Spectracide rose and flower spray in aerosol cans and to report cans noticed on garden shop shelves.
The cans of insecticide spray sell in the $2.00 price range.

SUIT PENDING
(Continued From Page 1)
dropping of the suit would result in Georgia peanut farmers receiving about four million dollars more for their crop this year than had been announced by USDA March 19.
In the meantime, the Georgia Peanut Commission which represents some 22,000 peanut farmers voted to support the commissioner in his request of the plaintiff to withdraw the suit and thereby force Butz to allow peanut farmers to receive an equitable price for their crop.
The issue revolves around the difference paid for Runner type peanuts, grown in the southeast, and Virginia type peanuts. In March, USDA announced one price support and then in July, under pressure from Virginia and North Carolina, changed the support program altogether.
The suit was then entered by shelters and a grower against Butz, claiming they had already booked and sold peanuts under the original price support differential announced in March.
Butz countered by suspending the peanut price support program until a court decision is rendered.

Other areas of research include the use of feed additives and implants in growing and finishing cattle, systemic insecticides in controlling parasites of cattle and insects causing plant diseases, variety trials with corn and grain sorghum, and herbicide testing to develop a program for weed control in grain and forage crops.
Numerous visitors have shown much interest in our research over the years. Efficiencies in cost of production and cattle production programs are available that interest many of Georgia's cattlemen.
We, at the Station, are proud of our program and wish to express our appreciation to the scientists conducting research at this Station and the supporters for their interest and cooperation.
