Grain Farmers Told

In Coastal Plains
The Coastal Plain Station of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Experiment Stations located in Tifton has over the years developed an enviable record of research productivity. Not only is its good reputation established in the Southeast and in the U.S., people from many parts of the world know about Tifton, Georgia and the Coastal Plain Station.
What may not be well known is that the Station at Tifton is the
center of an experiment station complex with units located from Burke County to Decatur County. The Southeast I Georgia Branch I Station at Midjville, the Ex"tension-Research Center at Attapulgus and the Southwest Georgia Branch Station at Plains (I doubt there are many people in America today who don't know where Plains is) are all a part

of the Coastal Plain Station. This experiment station complex
is, of course, a part of the experiment station system which blankets the State of Georgia.
What is unique about the Coastal Plain Station is that it exists in and serves directly Georgia's primary agricultural region, the Coastal Plain. It is a region that produces more than forty percent of all the peanuts produced in the U.S. All of the State's tobacco acreage, most of the cotton (Dooley County produces more cotton than any other county), and a large part of the corn and other feed grains, including soybeans, are grown in the Coastal Plain area of Georgia. Beef cattle and swine are major agricultural enterprises in Sough Georgia, too.
This situation presents a real challenge and numerous opportunities for productive research by the nearly 100 scientists at the Station. These 100 or so scientists about half of which- are ARS-USDA employees and half State employees
are dedicated to providing a

Georgia farmers are urged to protect themselves against possible fraud by making sure who they deal with when selling
grain. Commissioner of Agriculture
Tommy Irvin reminded farmers that under a new state law effective July 1, all grain buyers in the state are required to be licensed and bonded by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
"Farmers selling grain such as corn, soybeans, etc. should know who they are dealing with and if not certain, should ask the buyer to show his license identifica-
tion," Irwin said. Irvin urged grain buyers who
might not be aware of the law to contact the Georgia Department of Agriculture in Atlanta if they have not yet obtained their
license.

Home Gardeners Preserving

Fruits Of Summer Labor

During the past several years, spiraling food costs have encouraged

many Georgia residents to cultivate that extra plot of ground in their

backyards. Home gardens have become the pride of the neighborhood.

Now that your garden is producing a bountiful harvest, what do you do with the large quantities of fresh produce which your family can't eat? DON'T let all your hard work of tilling, planting, weeding, watering and harvesting go to waste. To save the summer's surplus of vegetables and to help stretch

long term storage of food. Both methods are easy to perform, but for best results and for food safety, it is necessary to familiarize"* yourself with the proper procedures each year.
Before starting to process food, decide which method will achieve the color and flavor of food that your family will eat. Then, select

the family's food budget, learn how to use the food preservation methods of canning and freezing.
Canning and freezing are the

only those vegetables which are free from decay and have a good natural color. Remember that food processing will not improve

most widely used methods for

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through
this publication. All horses offered for ad-
vertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past .60
days. On recommendation of the State
Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only. January through April.

Sweet Shut?
Sweet shrub is an old-fashion favorite because of its aromatic flowers. It has been used for hundreds of years to perfume linen closets and improve the overall aroma of American households.
Sweet shrub is native to the southeastern United States with only one variety indigenous elsewhere. That variety is the California sweet shrub but it is less well known than our Calycanthus.
Otherwise known as Carolina Allspice and Strawberry shrub, the wild bush can be found growing in practically any soil. It thrives in partial shade or full sun but is most often found growing in an uncultivated woodland area.
The flowers are dark reddish brown with ribbonlike petals and usually bloom in May. The one inch flowers rest on lustrous green leaves usually about four inches long. The medium sized shrubs are deciduous but are easily identified any time of year by crushing a twig. Propagation is easily accomplished by seed or division.

sound basis for the new and improved technology that keeps Georgia's and the Nation's agriculture foremost in the world.
All Georgians can take pride in having an agricultural, research and education system second to none. Those of us at the Coastal Plain Station are proud of the role we play and are especially appreciative of the interest and support we receive from the citizens of this State.

a poor quality vegetable. Also, to insure freshness, produce should be processed as soon after picking as possible.
HOME FREEZING
Home freezing is the most popular method because it has just a few simple steps. The most critical step is blanching. It should be done with care and is a "must" for all vegetables frozen for more than four weeks.
Blanching brightens the color, helps retain vitamins, shrinks the product for easier packaging, cleanses the surface of dirt and organisms, and stops enzyme action which would otherwise destroy the fresh flavor.
Step 1. Wash, drain, sort and drain vegetables.
Step 2. Blanch vegetables in boiling water for several minutes, (for Blanching Chart contact your County Extension Office)
Step 3. Cool vegetables immediately in cold water, then drain well. Package in moisturevapor resistant containers or plastic bags.
Step 4. Finally, write name of product and date processed on package. Freeze immediately.
HOME CANNING:
When fresh vegetables have been carefully selected and properly processed, home canning provides a safe, inexpensive, high quality product. Improper canning methods may result in botulism, a food poisoning which may cause death.
The first step in canning is to decide what type of process is needed. There are two basic processing methods and the one you choose depends on the type of food being canned.
The water-bath method is recommended for acid foods such as fruits, tomatoes, pickles and relishes. This method processes food at the boiling temperature, 212 degrees F.
The steam-pressure methods offer two types of canners; the larger steam-pressure canner and the small pressure saucepan. (If the pressure saucepan is used, make sure that it will generate 10 pounds pressure and add 20 minutes to normal processing time.) This process is recommended for low-acid foods such as low-acid vegetables, meat, poultry and fish.
To avoid improper canning procedures, follow these guidelines:
1. Use only tested, currently approved methods.
2. Use jars, cans and lids made especially for home canning.
3. Do not reuse sealing lids. 4. Do not use overripe food. 5. Do not overpack foods. 6. Follow exactly the time and temperature for foods and container size listed in instruction booklet. 7. Test the seal according to

instructions. 8. Do not use canned foods
showing signs of spoilage. Contact your County Extension
Office for CANNING AND FREEZING INSTRUCTION BOOKLETS.
"Safety First"
Still Best Motto
For Good Farmer
Many farmers have lost thousands of dollars due to the loss of a tractor to FIRE. There are a number of things a tractor operator can do to prevent this
loss. FUEL- Always use a large
funnel when refueling from a can to avoid spillage. The fuel tank is located immediately above the extremely hot exhaust manifold, making an extremely dangerous situation when safety precautions
are ignored. SMOKING- Smoking during re-
fueling operations is extremely dangerous. Numerous times a person will put a cigarette down on the ground several feet away from the tractor or area where he is pouring gasoline. This, they think, is safe; but gasoline vapors are heavier than air and have a tendency to float along the ground for a number of feet especially to a lower area, or in a downwind direction. Please put them out before handling gaso-
line. WIRING- Wiring, if not checked
and properly maintained can also contribute to a dangerous situation. Check all wiring on a regular basis, by making sure all clips and connections are tight. All broken, cracked, and frayed wiring should be replaced immediately so no arcing can take
place. LEAKS- There are two areas
where leaks occur most frequently. One is the gasket located around the sediment bowl, and the other is the fittings around the carburetor and fuel lines. Each time you refuel or check your oil you should check for leaks in these areas, it only takes a minute.
FIELD CONDITIONS- A number of fires occur each year during tractor operations in extremely dry conditions in fields and woods. One such condition is when mowing or turning under tall grass or stubble. Never leave your tractor sitting in an area that has not been cut, move it to a clear area because tall dry grass and stubble will be subject to catch fire from the hot exhaust systems, especially on older model tractors (some newer ones have verticle exhaust).
It has been said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If this statement is true, a small investment into a 5 Ib. dry chemical extinguisher in a readily accessible place, and above all get proper instruction in its use.

Its An Ag-Fact
It's an ag-fact. For every dollar received from the export of farm products, another 75 cents is generated throughout non-farm areas of the economy. In a year's time, this added economic effect of farm exports now amounts to an extra $15 billion or more injected into the economy.
It's an ag-fact. North American farmers are eight or nine times more efficient than their counterparts in Russia. Each North American farm worker produces enough to feed three score or more people; while the Russian farm worker feeds only seven.
****
It's an ag-fact. In the past quarter-century, the value of exports of U.S. agricultural products has increased 65-fold. This continuing rise in farm exports since World War II has become a basic block in the foundation of the entire U.S. economy.
