Beauty, Retreat

For Mind, Body

Now all Georgians can enjoy a major Botanical Garden of their own. The University of Georgia Botanical Garden, located south of the campus on Whitehall Road, has 293 acres along the Middle Oconee River offering a wide variety of natural physiographic features. It is a typical Georgia Piedmont area with rolling hills and valleys with native vegetation. The land was set aside in 1968 and natural trails were opened which are in constant use by students, faculty, organized groups, and casual visitors.
A primary objective in planning the garden was to provide a
place for teaching, public service, and research in plant science. Major functions of the garden are to conserve native spejcies, to exhibit | rare and unusual ! plants, to make long range observations and studies of plants under natural and controlled conditions, and to provide a haven of beauty. University President Fred G. Davison described the garden as "a

dream of an educational and research facility that will be simultaneously a place of beauty and a retreat for the mind and body. This dream will never be completely realized because a botanical garden \ is a living, dynamic thing, changing as it matures, renewing itself constantly from its own seed as it is shaped by loving hands."
Formally dedicated in October, 1975, the Botanical Garden Callaway Building, constructed and furnished through a $653,000 gift from the Callaway Foundation, Inc. of LaGrange, nouses the administrative offices. It also includes research and laboratory facilities, meeting facilities with two conference rooms which seat more than 300, a library, and herbarium. Dr. F. E. Johnstone, Jr., director of the gar-

Long-eared Creature Frontier Arts

To Receive Tribute
Mule Day, an annual event at Gold Hills of Dahlonega, will be held Au-
gust 14. Much has been written about the gold era of Georgia but little credit has been given the lowly mule who played a great part in the extraction of gold from the earth and without whose labor such prosperity could not have been possible. Gold Hills of Dahlonega plans to remedy this unjust situation at Mule Day with contests for the Most Beautiful Mule, the Ugliest Mule, and the Orneriest Mule.

Number 31
Cyst Nematodes
Found In Soybeans;
1st Time In Ga.
Soybean cyst nematodes have been found in Georgia for the first time.
The pests were discovered in a routine soil sample sent to the Cooperative Extension Service nematode laboratory by a county agent and grower in Jefferson County.
Some 25 College of Agriculture research scientists and Extension leaders, representatives of the State Department of Agriculture, and members of the G'.-orgia Soybean Association and the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Soybeans met to appraise the situation in Jefferson County.
Land where the nematodes are present had been cut for timber and cleared with heavy equipment from another state known to be infested with soybean cysts. The source of infestation is thought to have been the landclearing equipment, although this cannot be definitely established.
Because the fields in Jefferson County are the only known infested areas in Georgia, all growers in the state are urged to check their fields carefully for areas that are extremely stunted and yellow. Soil samples and carefully-dug root systems from suspicious areas should be taken to county Extension offices for analysis by the nematode lab.
Georgia Homamaker
Of Year Crowned

I their three teenage sons; Frankie, Ed and S; ;ve. As her title implies Betty is most out| standing in the field of Home^ making.
She is a very active 4-H Club Volunteer Leader and Vice-President of Crawford County Homemakers Club.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Wednesday, August 4, 1976

we

Dear Editor: Farmers can make their own Japanese Beetle
traps by using two plastic milk jugs, taping them together and catching the bugs. Stores sell them [traps] but they cost. This trap is homemade except the bait.
W. H. Gazaway Route 4 Alpharetta, Georgia 30201
1. Cut windows in one jug. Fold flaps in. [This keeps beetles from flying back out.] Cut hole in top of jug. Connect string to tie trap to tree. Also attach small bag of bait and suspend inside top jug.
2. Remove screw lids from jugs and connect necks with tape.
3. Remove bottom jug when full of beetles. Pour beetles in mixture of hot water and kerosene to destroy.

No commercial, industrial or domestic employment permitted. Only that employment that pertains to the individual farm may be advertised.

ROAST CHICKEN SOUTHERN-STYLE WITH PEANUT BUTTER SAUCE

Ingredients and Methods: (For Two Persons)

Ingredients

1-2Vi pound Chicken

1 cup cooked grits

1/2 cup cream sauce

A pinch of: Oregano, Salt and

1 soup spoon of chopped parsley pepper

Method

Mix Grits with the Cream Sauce (be sure the two are

mixed thoroughly) Add Parsley, salt, pepper and

oregano according to taste. Mix well and stuff chicken

with mixture. Roast for approximately one hour at 375

degrees (F).

PEANUT BUTTER SAUCE

Ingredients

3 ounces of Peanut Butter

1 T. chocolate syrup

3 ounces of heavy whipping cream

After roasting chicken, remove from the roasting pan

and keep warm. Add approximately: 1/2 pint of water

into the roasting pan and reduce to half.

Add peanut butter and mix well with liquid contents.

Add the chocolate syrup and, if necessary, add salt to

season. Add whipping cream or heavy cream. Barely

bring all the above to a boil. Serve over chicken.

CHICKEN CROQUETTES
Use the same ingredients as for the Roast Chicken Southern Style with Peanut Butter Sauce. The method of preparation is as follows:
Boil chicken until cooked, let cool and then bone the chicken. Grind the chicken meat in a coarse form and add to the stuffing. Form 1 ounce balls or patties or the croquette shape and roll the balls in flour (lightly). Fry in oil and place in a dish. Now the sauce may be poured over the croquettes.
Good Luck! and Have Fun! Heinz Sowinski Atlanta, Ga.

Woodbine is native to Georgia and is one of our oldest and most favorite garden plants. Early settlers discovered the coral honeysuckle growing wild and transplanted it near their homes, often on trellises or porch railings.
Unlike the common honeysuckle, woodbine is not fragrant. Its charm depends on the bright coral blooms born in profusion during spring and early summer. In milder climates, the vine is semievergreen. In most of Georgia, however, it loses its greenery in winter.
Woodbine will grow in any soil sun or shade. However, it needs light to flower. For this reason, honeysuckle vines in the woods are often discounted as being weeds when they might be woodbine.
Besides its enchanting blooms, woodbine also bears red fruits which add to the fall landscape. Although small, the fruits are numerous and quite distinctive and colorful.
Valera Jessee
Statewide Disease, insect Survey Held
A statewide insect and disease survey has been completed by the Georgia Forestry Commission.
Ray Shirley, Forestry Commiss ion director, stated that southern pine beetle spots have decreased by 2,470 since 1975 to 1,086 spots. However, the insect has been found for the first time in Camden and Glynn Counties.
Cut and spray programs are underway on Sapelo and St. Catherine's Islands where there are active southern pine beetle spots.
Southern pine beetle infestation is considered heavy in Catoosa, Towns and Union Counties with the majority of spots on federal land. Elsewhere, southern pine beetle activity is light to medium. There are 50 counties with some bark beetle activity. These counties are primarily above the Fall Line.
Pitch canker incidence is low to moderate in South Georgia.

SOUTHERN REGION Coastal Plain Station-Tifton

From the cool ruggedness of the northern piedmont to the flat sandy Coastal Plain to the semitropical southern region, Georgia is a study in geographical and climatological contrasts. Since each area of Georgia presents different problems to her farmers, regionalized agricultural research is necessary. To meet this need, the statewide direction and outreach of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Experiment Stations was planned to place research infor mation of a regional nature only a short driving distance away from any point in the state. The Experiment Stations and their locations are shown.
