National Program

Begins for Eggs

Beginning August 1, Georgia egg producers will be participating in a new nationwide endeavor to promote eggs. The program requires that all producers with more than 3,000 laying hens and flocks not primarily engaged in hatching egg production be assessed five cents per thirty dozen case of eggs marketed.
Money received under this new checkoff will total approximately $7-
million annually and will be used to support advertising, promotion, and research. This will not only benefit consumers, but will also create an increased demand for eggs and spent fowl, thus enhancing all segments of the industry. The program was approved in a nationwide referendum conducted in November of 1975, with

An 18-man board was elected by producers to administer the funds and is chairmaned by John P. Wallace of St. Petersburg, Florida. Ed-

Order Lime Now

To Avoid Shortage

During Fall Months

Several years ago a lime shortage resulted in Georgia due to a nationwide shortage of rail equipment used to haul lime and in-
creased usage of lime and of rail transportation.
Railroad officials are urging distributors to begin ordering their lime now in order to avoid the rush and possible shortage of lime transporting cars that usually hits in October through December when farmers are needing the lime in Georgia.
Dealers who have modernized their operation to handle the new 100 ton hopper cars will be able to serve their customers quicker and cheaper if these are utilized.
The best solution to prevent this problem is for dealers, and where practical farmers, to purchase and stockpile lime during the off season so it will be readily available when needed.

A perfect example of the old fashion Georgia garden has been reconstructed at the Tullie Smith House in northwest Atlanta. The Atlanta Historical Society is responsible for renovating, researching and maintaining the authentic plantation plain-style home. Old diaries, poetry and gardening books were used to authenticate the gardens. Picture one is a view of the front yard showing the individual beds

for flowers and swept yard. Picture two is of the side yard where beds of herbs were grown. Picture three is an example of the type flowers grown, pincushion flowers, magenta flox, globe thistle and chrysanthemums, near the fence for enjoyment in the home and yard.

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through

this publication. All horses offered for ad-
vertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

The gallic rose was native to ancient Rome and was carried to all those countries that composed the Roman Empire. It became very popular in Gaul (France) and subsequently came to be known as the Gallic rose. It was one of Empress Josephine's favorites. Of the 260 rose varieties at her Malmaison garden, at least 167 were varieties of gallic roses.
The rose is one of the few roses depicted in Renaissance paintings and early Italian works. It is also memoralized in stained glass windows of old cathedrals.
The gallic rose was one of the most respected old fashion roses. While it was beautiful like the others, it also had medicinal properties. The hips and petals were used by pharmacies to prepare spring tonics, astringents, etc., as early as Roman Times.
A variety of the gallic rose, R. gallica officinalis, was brought to this country by early settlers. Appropriately it was called the Apothecary rose. In early American literature there are many references to the French Rose or Red Rose. Because of its ability to sucker freely and produce lots of seed, it has naturalized in our country.
One of the most outstanding features of the gallic rose is its intense color. The original gallics were deep pink to crimson or rich, rich marroon. Hybridizing has even produced some striped varieties.
The gallic rose is not tender. It can withstand drought, . extreme temperatures and a wide variety of soil acidity. It is easy to grow and will bring you the same enjoyment it brought to the Empress Josephine.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

First Gardens

(Continued From Page 1)

Georgia's first gardens were patterned after English countryside gardens thanks to the ancestry of our early settlers. There was a place for flowers, a
corner for herbs, a plot for vegetables, a stand of fruit trees
an maybe a scuppernong arbor.

The fruit trees, grape arbor and vegetable garden were usually to the side of the house or "out back" while the flower garden took precedent in the front yard and the herbs were planted near the back door and came to be known as "kitchen
gardens". The kitchen garden provided
the necessary herbs for food preservation as well as family medicine and included borage, bee balm, chives, digitalis, garlic, horseradish, lemon balm, majoram, mint, oregano and parsley. Certain herbs, especially tansy, were planted right next to the back door to keep ants and other insects from crossing the threshold.
Yards were not "grassed" because they were thought to attract insects and therefore be unhealthy. Besides, they were difficult to maintain with cycles and swing blades. Georgia yards were "swept" of pine needles and debris and many were sanded or sprinkled with sawdust shavings. Bishop Steven Elliott, Jr. commented in 1851, "But, where are our lawns. There are literally none. A green sward (land covered with grassy turf] is almost as rare in Georgia as a pavement of jasmine."
The front yard was regarded as an extension of the house, similar to our patio today. A picket fence protected the yard and plantings from grazing livestock and accentuated the feeling of an "outdoor room."
The "outdoor room" did not have foundation plantings. Again the insect philosophy prevailed about having plants close to the house. A few stragley arbor vitae, an occasional mock orange and sometimes a magnolia could be found but they were the exception rather than the rule. Crape myrtles were grown because of their "clean" appearance and cape jasmine (very similar to gardenias) was planted usually near the porch so its marvelous fragrance could waft through the house. Old fashion roses trailed across the top of the fence and native coral honeysuckle (woodvine) twined around front porch banisters.
The flower garden in the front yard was the real beauty spot in old fashion gardens. Stones collected from fields were used to make bed borders, shingles were
split, painted white and labeled to identify the flowers and, according to Thomas Jefferson, "something was always coming to perfection." Flowers were in bloom from early spring until frost providing a rainbow of color and variety. A typical garden might include orange daylilies, lemon lilies, larkspur, coleus, red and blue salvia, phlox, strawflowers, petunias columbines and
dahlias.

Governor George Busbee receives an honorary membership in the Poultry Leaders Round Table from President of the Georgia Poultry Federation Bill Schimmel. Schimmel said: "We appreciate the effective assistance you have given the poultry industry. We are grateful for the superb leadership you are giving the State of Georgia."
Poultry is the largest segment of agriculture and Georgia is the number one poultry state. The Round Table recognizes leaders who have rendered outstanding service to the industry and the state. The active members, now 92, have an opportunity to elect an honorary member each year. Only six others have received this recognition and commendation.
