Student Interest
In Horticulture
There has been a dramatic increase in the number of students at the University of Georgia who are pursuing a degree in horticulture. Just five years ago, fall enrollment in horticulture was slightly less than 40 students while enrollment today is 300. Although the number of freshmen entering the University as horticulture majors has been fairly constant, 15 to 18, the number of transfers into horticulture within the University and from junior colleges has been on the increase.
The University of Georgia is the only institution in the university
system offering degrees in horticulture. This increase in interest in horticulture is not unique to Georgia but is a national trend.________
(Our guest columnist this week is J. Benton Jones, Jr., Division Chairman and Department Head, Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture, University of Geor-
gio, Athens 30602.) __________
With the increasing interest in the environment, the growing of green plants for ecological purposes and beautification as well as the significant international concerns with regard to food supplies, students are more aware of plants and plant growing than ever before.
At the present time, there are ample employment opportunities for horticulture graduates. Job opportunities vary considerably. Interestingly, quite a few graduates are going into business for themselves, opening nurseries, flower shops or doing private landscape work. For those obtaining a graduate degree in horticulture, employment opportunities are excellent, as the supply is not sufficient to meet current demands.
Although most students in norticulture are primarily interested in ornamentals or floriculture, pomology (fruits) and olericulture (vegetables) are attracting students also. However, there is need for more of these students, particularly for those interested in pursuing advanced degrees in these areas.
The university curriculum in horticulture is heavily science oriented. Therefore, solid academic credentials are essential to satisfactorily meet entrance requirements and insure successful completion of the University of Georgia's horticultural degree program.

Tractor Pull Association award winners were Jimmy Grubbs, Billy Purvis and Dr. Stanley Anderson of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural
College, Johnny Lanier of Bullock County Young Farmers, Burce Daniels of Ocilla, Tyron Spearman of Tifton and President Don Nicholson of Norman Park. The Georgia Tractor Pullers Association has announced plans to host a Bicentennial Tractor Pull July 17 & 18
at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

Pesticide Users Need Certification

See page 8 for listings
Contact Supplier
If Fuel Needs Up
The mandatory fuel allocation program is still in effect, and the State Energy Office has begun receiving calls requesting additional fuel for agriculture. The petroleum regulations allow individuals or companies engaged in farming operations to buy all the fuel they need, but the first step is up to you.
If you nave increased the number of acres planted, added more or larger equipment, or hauling more produce, you may need more fuel this season than last.
If your fuel requirements have risen, get in touch with your supplier and tell him, preferably by letter, what your new requirements are. He will then be able to go to his supplier and obtain the fuel for you.
However, you must plan in advance, as this process can take up to two or three weeks. If you have any questions about this, call either your supplier or the State Energy Office at (404) 6565176.

All farmers who wish to purchase and use "restricted use" pesticides after October 21, 1977, must become certified by the Georgia Department of Agricul-
ture. Changes in federal legislation
have required the Department of Agriculture to undertake this certification program so that our farmers can continue to use the pesticides they need to grow
their crops. EPA has not, at this time, designated which pesticides will be restricted (ie, those which are highly toxic to man or the
environment).
In order to test the present training program, thirteen county agents offered training in their respective counties during March and April of 1976 to more than 500 farmers. The training con-
sisted of about two and one-half hours and covers such subjects as understanding pesticide labels and formulations, safety and first-aid procedures, methods of application, environmental hazards, recognition of pests and State and Federal Laws and
Regulations. Evaluation of this training by
both farmers and agents has
been generally favorable and enthusiastic. It will be offered in each county on a state-wide basis this fall. You should be alert for any announcements from
your county extension office.

j Dear Editor:
i I am presently updating the World War One I portion of the official military history of the 81st
Infantry Division [Wildcat]. This unit consisted of volunteers from Georgia
and Tennessee. It was the first unit of the U.S. Army to design and adopt the distinctive shoulder patch insignia that is now required within the Army. Presently over 900 different patches exist, and this idea conceived by the commander of the 81st Division in 1917.
I would like to interview World War One veterans of the Wildcat Division for this history. I would appreciate hearing from veterans of the 81st at the following address:

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only. January through April.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Wkal 9fl Tb Riujwa
The rugosa rose is easily recognizable by its foliage. The crinkly appearance of the leaves with heavy veins distinguish it from other rose groups. The rose is also one of the few to have fall color when the foliage has an orange-red tint.
This hardy beautiful rose traces its heritage to the tenth century, its approximate time of arrival in Japan from the outer reaches of Manchuria and north central Asia. In the twelfth century, Japanese

historians record the use of rugosa rose petals in the
preparation of a favorite perfume. Its natural perfume or fragrance
is still one of its most enchanting qualities but you will have to enjoy the fragrance outdoors because the rose does not cut well.
Also known as the Japanese rose, the rugosa is a tall shrub with spiny stems. Its flowers can range in color from light pink to purplish-red. It is regarded as one of the hardiest old-fashion roses and is suitable for shrub planting and coastal salt air conditions.

Wednesday, July 7, 1976
The plant will tolerate high winds as well as poor dry soil.
Although the rose is supposed to have only one blooming season in late spring, it can be encouraged to produce again by pruning the shrub, removing faded flowers, and proper fertilizing.
