Soil Stewardship

Late Hours For Working People

Week May 23-30
Like any other year, 1976 is a year of many birthdays. But foremost of all, it is the Nation's 200th birthday, and throughout the year, citizens everywhere are considering the course of the American people.

Our country is known as "the land of opportunity." It is also a land of personal responsibility because it is our home and the home of generations to come.
As we take up the tasks of our third century, it is important to remind ourselves that we cannot be a

Dr. Darrell D. Morey of the University of Georgia Agronomy Division was responsible for growing the rye plots and organizing the meeting of state seed analysts from Alabama, Georgia, Florida and the U. S. Department of Agriculture.

Horses,

mules, ponies

for sale

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

known as the damask rose, it was called the "rose of Paestum or Carthage".

The damask rose is a very old garden rose. It is recorded as growing in ancient Egypt but is not a native plant. It is mentioned in old literature and often pictured in early still life paintings.
Its name comes from the city of Damascus, Syria, where it was brought from Asia by the Phoenician traders. Before it was

The damask rose is. very very fragrant. It has pale green foliage with large clusters of double blossoms. Its flowers can range from purest white to red. There are usually five leaflets, hooked thorn and the average height is six to eight feet. It is an arching plant that requires moderate pruning to maintain healthy growth. For the most part it is disease resistant.
Among its most famous varieties are the York and Lancaster rose, a white petal bloom striped with pink and or red; Omar Khayyam, a very old variety with blush-pink blooms; and Mme. Hardy, pure white cupped to flat flowers.

tests have been conducted. Dr. U. R. Gore, Agronomist (now retired) started these variety identification tests with wheat and rye in 1955-56 at the Georgia Experiment Station.
The rye specialists found that Elbon rye and some other varieties grown in the Southern states are still being mislabeled as to variety. Northern rye varieties are not adapted and produce poor forage and grain in the southeastern states.
Besides the identification of rye varieties, this meeting is used to encourage growers to purchase and plant certified seed of recommended varieties. At the same time, such meetings and demonstrations discourage the growing of poorly adapted varieties.

Soil Stewardship
(Continued From Page 1) collection of self-indulgent individuals. We are a society of citizens bound together by public and personal principles and goals. Temporary setbacks, which we have experienced before, are not a reason for resignation, but for reaffirmation of faith in the state and nation.
We should remind ourselves that we depend utterly, in the future as in the past, on the care and bounty of our God-given wealth of productive soil and all the resources associated with it.
As we begin again, let us commit ourselves to those actions we truthfully believe will be worthy, not only to our country, but to ourselves as responsible citizens in service to our Lord.
I'm reminded of the scriptures in I Corinthians, 4:7, "Name something you have that you have not received. If then, you have received it, why "are you boasting as if it were your own?"
