But foremost of all, it is the Nation's 200th birthday, and throughout the year, citizens everywhere are considering the course of the American people. As citizens of this great nation, we cannot afford to dwell on the past. iWe must look forward. We must seek out fresh ideas. In the words of our Soil Stewardship Week Theme for 1976, !"We Begin j Again." Never before in ! the history of soil and water conservation districts, in my opinion, have the challenges been greater. Never before have the opportunities for conservation achievement been brighter. Never before have the stakes been higher. It is human nature to be more protective and work harder for that which belongs to you. In the United States, most of us for generations have had that feeling about our country. Here we can own property. We elect and remove our leaders. We are free to select a religion of our choice and we can share in making government policies and decisions. Under our constitution we have certain guaranteed personal rights. We have a high degree of freedom, the most prized of all possessions. American citizens function as members of a democracy which is the best system of government yet devised by man. Some people now say our system of government is failing us. I don't think so. I believe we are failing the system by not realizing that, because it is our own, we must work harder and longer hours to make it work. Our country is known as "the land of opportunity." It is also a land of personal responsibility because it is our home and the home of generations to come. Rye Field Day Held At Tifton On March 18th 34 rye specialists from Georgia and other southern states met for a field day on the Agronomy farm at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station. They observed 567 different rye plots for trueness-to-variety and proper labeling as to variety. Dr. Darrell D. Morey of the University of Georgia Agronomy Division was responsible for growing the rye plots and organizing the meeting of state seed analysts from Alabama, Georgia, Florida and the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Georgia Peanuts Remain ,4s: wh.'D2ri& Tkc"ng Number One Seed Crop The Georgia Crop Improvement Association field inspected and approved for certification in 1975 over 41,000 acres of peanuts. From this production the Association has tagged over 900,000 bags of certified peanut seed. According to the official laboratory reports the germination on peanuts is well above average this year. Over 98 per cent of the lots germinated above the minimum standards, with many lots germinating in the high eighties and low nineties. Certified seed are available to plant over 95 per cent of Georgia's peanut acreage. during the day, the Cannery will be open on Mondays from 2-10 p.m. Cans have to be on the line by 8 p.m. Cannery hours are as follows: Monday 2-10 p.m. (cans on line by 8 p.m.), Tuesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (cans on line by 3 p.m.), Wednesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (cans on line by 3 p.m.), Thursday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (cans on line by 3 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (cans on line by 3 p.m.). Hours to operate the pea and butterbean shellers are same as above. Shellers will be turned off at 8 p.m. on Mondays and 3 p.m. Tues-Friday. Cost: 15 cents per can, Boxes (24 can box) 30 cents, and use of Pea and Nationwide Survey butterbean shellers is $1.50 per bushel. Winners Announced A Georgia youth, Larry Alan Johnson, Adairsville, who said the best farmers also seem to be the most successful businessmen, recently returned from a trip to DEKALB AgResearch, Inc.'s international headquarters at DeKalb, Illinois, as winner of a national 4-H agribusiness careers award. Johnson, is a junior at the University of Georgia's College of Agriculture and is majoring hi agricultural economics. Winaers of the annual Grace Hartley Scholarship Award have been named by the Georgia Egg Commission for 1976-77. The recipients are Miss Christina Lynn Weatherford of Athens, Georgia, and Miss Karen Ann Suever of Doraville, Georgia. Both women are students at the University of Georgia majoring in Home Economics and Journalism. The scholarship was established at the University of Georgia through gifts from more than 30 individuals, professional organizations, and food-related industries in Georgia, and is administered by the Egg Commission.
