Cattlemen Need
Tested Bulls
The time has arrived for beef cattle producers to use only those bulls for breeding that have been tested for both their rate and efficiency of weight gains. It is essential that producers know exactly what they are using and the results to expect.
Beef cattle producers are quite aware of the importance of testing
and purchasing bulls that have been tested for their rate of weight gains. Many producers may not be familiar with the importance of testing to determine how efficient those gains are. After all, in the final analysis, the amount of feed required to put the weight on the animals is the critical item. Cattlemen are being forced to become more performance and efficiency minded because of high

production costs. The producers who are now culling their low quality cattle and selecting new breeding stock on the basis of their actual performance and feed conversion efficiency will be ahead when the current "slump" in the cattle market is over. It will probably take much longer, or forever, for the "slump" to be over for those producers who do not make an effort to improve the quality of their cattle. It is profitable to pay more for good proven breeding stock.
In the total performance testing system at Rollins Research Center, Berry College, Mount Berry, prospective breeding animals are individually fed. This allows both the rapidity and efficiency of weight gains (Ibs. of feed required per Ib. of gain) to be determined. It has been observed at Rollins Center, that the fastest gaining animals are not always the most efficient feed converters. In many cases, the most rapid gaining animals have just consumed more

B-brand means Brucellosis....All infected animals must be branded on the left jaw. They are then sent immediately to slaughter. This keeps these animals from mixing with other healthy cattle while in the market channels.
Bought and Paid For
Eradication Efforts Costly,
Difficult For Brucellosis
"Don't buy Brucellosis." Cattlemen and dairymen who've experienced this
disease in their herds know brucellosis is bad news. Their farms are quarantined. This disease, which causes abortions and breeding problems, is costly. Getting rid of it is often a prolonged and difficult job.

The Society, organized in 1967, is made up of educators, government researchers, and food industry representatives.
Brucellosis is an infectious bacterial disease of cattle and other livestock. It can be transmitted from animals to man as undulant fever so called because of the intermittent fever it produces in human victims.
How is Brucellosis Spread? It is commonly transmitted to susceptible animals by direct contact with infected animals. It is also transmitted to susceptible animals in contact with an environment which has been contaminated with discharges from

Number 2
Southern Chickens
Eat More Than
Swine Population
Which consume more feed? Chickens or hogs? According to figures compiled in a study of animal numbers and feed requirements projected to 1985, the South's poultry population will out-eat the hog family by 53 percent to the hog's 16 percent.
This margin is based on a projected 53.5 million tons of feed concentrate, equivalent to corn in feeding value. Feed concentrates contain large amounts of energy in relation to bulk.
Except for dairy cows, 11 states below the Mason-Dixon Line have experienced faster growth in animal numbers than the rest of the United States.
By 1985, says ARS agricultural economist Yvonne Davies at the Russell Research Center, Athens, Ga., the South will have 3.5 billion broilers, 190 million layers, 288 million layer replacements pullets up to 20 weeks old and 70 million turkeys. There will be 20 million hogs, 4 million "fed" cattle, and 2 million dairy cattle.
Poultry, still the shopper's alloccasion favorite, will consume the most with 53 percent. Cattle fattened to provide beef ranging from U. S. Choice sirloins to ground chuck will rank second, consuming 26 percent of the South's total feed requirements. Hogs rank third with 16 percent of the feed.
Georgia Continues
4s Poultry Leader
Georgia continues as the Poultry Capital of the world and poultry as the largest segment of Georgia agriculture.
In 1975, the gigantic Georgia poultry industry logged its 20th consecutive year as Georgia's leading agricultural money-maker and the 18th as the nation's leader in poultry income.
To keep both crowns in 1975, Georgia poultrymen processed a working day average of some 4,714,497 pounds of chicken, over two million dozen eggs and approximately 60 tons of turkey.
According to figures of the Georgia Poultry Market News Service, Georgia's poultry plants processed 408,589,800 broilers in 1975, a 4.3 per cent increase over 1974.

Dear Editor: When I was little, my mother would make us
children snow cream but I'm not sure I remember how to make it. My son suggested I write the BULLETIN because they always help people. I hope you can help me.

(Editor's note: Here's help - gather fresh clean snow.
You will probably want to scrape off the very top unless you collect it right away. In a full bowl of snow, stir in
sugar, canned milk and flavoring (vanilla, banana, etc.)
to taste. Enjoy!)

In addition, statements should accompany any lumber or building materials to the effect that these materials were used on now dismantled farm buildings [poultry houses, barns, etc.] Please note that sugar cane ads have been moved to the Agricultural Seed and Plants column.

Fetit?
Also known as "hairy" cliffbrake, this fern likes limestone growing
conditions. It has been found growing with fervor, however, in neutral areas such as on Stone Mountain's granite ledges. Stone and brick walls as well as other rocky outcroppings throughout the state also provide a suitable environment for the purple cliffbrake.
The scientific name, Pellaea atropurpurea, refers to the blackpurple leaf-stalks. Besides this obvious characteristic, the fern is also hairy.
A hairy, purple-stalked plant does
not usually bring to mind a fern. The cliffbrake, however, is an interesting species of fern life and since being introduced to America from Europe in the mid-18th century has made itself at home in many parts of our state.

So many days have come and gone Some hurried by some seemed
long, But all of them had something new That even now, I refer back to. Some days held sadness tears
Some misunderstanding fears, Some filled with joy and laughter That will be remembered way

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Brucellosis Eradication
(Continued From Page 1]
infected animals. Despite occasional exceptions, the general rule is that brucellosis is carried from one herd to another by an infected or exposed animal. This occurs when a herd owner buys replacement cattle which are infected or have been exposed to infection prior to purchase. In other words, brucellosis is usually bought and paid for!
What Happens When Evidence of Disease Is Found By Screening? Once located, infection is contained by quarantining all infected and exposed cattle and limiting their movement to slaughter only. Bloodtesting procedures are used to find all infected cattle and free the herd of brucellosis. Also, Federal and State animal health officials check neighboring herds and others that may have received cattle from the infected herd. All possible leads to additional infection are traced.
Why Is Identification Of Market Cattle Important? The key to the success of the MCI (Market Cattle Identification) program is proper identification of all animals so they can be traced to their herds of origin. Most livestock markets mark cattle with numbered, USDA-approved backtags. Backtags, as well as eartags and other man-made identification devices, are collected and sent to the State diagnostic laboratory along with the matching blood samples to aid in tracing ownership of reactors.
Can Brucellosis In Animals Be Cured? No. Repeated attempts to develop a cure for brucellosis in cattle have failed. Occasionally, animals recover spontaneously after a long period of time. More commonly, however, only the symptoms disappear and the animals remain diseased. Such animals are dangerous sources of infection for other animals.
Can Brucellosis Be Prevented? The disease may be avoided by employing good sanitation and management practices. Replacement animals should be tested when purchased and retested not sooner than 60 nor later than 120 days afterward. They should be kept isolated from the established herd during this period. This will allow detection of animals that were in the incubation state of the
disease when acquired.
How Costly Is Brucellosis To The Livestock Industry? Since 1971, brucellosis in cattle has been on the increase. For instance, the number of infected herds reported jumped from 11,578 in fiscal year 1972 to 16,498 in fiscal year 1975 a 42.5 percent increase. This trend must be reversed! But despite the recent increases of brucellosis, the livestock and dairy industry has realized great savings from the cooperative State-Federal eradication program. For instance, annual losses from lowered milk production, aborted calves, and reduced breeding efficiency have decreased from about $100 million annually in 1949 to about $15 million annually today. Also, the incidence of quarantined herds in Georgia has decreased from 505 in August to 380 as of January 5, 1976. If eradication efforts were halted, the industry would be losing an estimated $365 million annually from brucellosis in about 15 years from now.
Generally, How Does Brucellosis Affect Its Human Victims?
Called undulant fever, brucellosis in humans is insidious at the onset and difficult to diagnose. Farmers, ranchers, veterinarians and packing plant workers are among the hardest hit since they gain their infection through direct contact with infected animals. With its recurrent bouts of fever and malaise, undulant fever has ruined the productive lives of many persons. It is one of the most miserable diseases of man.
How Can People Be Protected From Brucellosis? Ranchers or farmers should take the precaution of cleaning areas likely to become infected and keeping them clean. They should wear gloves when assisting cows calving or sows farrowing and ones that abort, and scrub well afterward. Habits of personal and area cleanliness are important even though no known diseased animals are involved. Just as important is the precaution against consuming raw milk or its by-products. Pasteurization is a very simple and quick measure which can prevent much suffering. Ultimately, the best prevention will be eradication of brucellosis in livestock, thus eliminating the only source of human infection.
I Straight Line
I have a cow that eats the bark off of pine trees. Ruins the trees and makes the milk taste funny. What causes this? Mrs. H. L., Mt. Airy
Unbalanced ration causes this. Ask your feed dealer for a good vitamin
and mineral supplement to feed your cow free choice. Also, put her on a
high quality dairy feed and give her good hay so that she may have it
free choice at all tunes. Paint the areas on the trees where the bark has
been eaten with pure pine tar. This should taste bad enough to her that
she will stop.

feed. The high cost of feed and labor
combined with low farm prices for livestock make it imperative that
the producer take advantage of every possibility of reducing production costs. Producing more efficient beef cattle is one practical way that these costs can be reduced.
This is illustrated when the cost of 350 Ibs. of gain is considered for an animal that requires 9.0 Ibs. of feed per Ib. of gain, as compared to an animal that requires only 5.5 Ibs. 'of feed per Ib. of gain. If the feed costs $100.00 per ton, the feed cost for the less efficient animal will be $157.50, and for the more efficient animal, $96.25. The $61.25 difference in feed costs between these two animals could mean the difference between profit and loss.
Bulls presently on test at Rollins Center include Angus, Brahman, Charolais, Polled Herefords and percentage Simmental. These bulls will be offered for sale at auction at 12:30 p.m. on January 28 at the center. This sale provides a unique opportunity for the progressive breeder, A. I. units or commercial cattlemen to purchase performance tested bulls with known feed conversion efficiency. As far as it is known, there is no other multiple breed sale held that offers individually tested bulls for sale.
Using bulls that are efficient feed converters is one thing that can help make the beef cattle business profitable again.
