FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume 62 FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, January 14, 1976 Cattlemen Need Tested Bulls The time has arrived for beef cattle producers to use only those bulls for breeding that have been tested for both their rate and efficiency of weight gains. It is essential that producers know exactly what they are using and the results to expect. Beef cattle producers are quite aware of the importance of testing and purchasing bulls that have been tested for their rate of weight gains. Many producers may not be familiar with the importance of testing to determine how efficient those gains are. After all, in the final analysis, the amount of feed required to put the weight on the animals is the critical item. Cattlemen are being forced to become more performance and efficiency minded because of high (Our guest columnist this week is Dr. William F. Moore, Chairman, Agriculture Department, Director, Rollins Beef Research Center, Berry College, Mount Berry 30149.) production costs. The producers who are now culling their low quality cattle and selecting new breeding stock on the basis of their actual performance and feed conversion efficiency will be ahead when the current "slump" in the cattle market is over. It will probably take much longer, or forever, for the "slump" to be over for those producers who do not make an effort to improve the quality of their cattle. It is profitable to pay more for good proven breeding stock. In the total performance testing system at Rollins Research Center, Berry College, Mount Berry, prospective breeding animals are individually fed. This allows both the rapidity and efficiency of weight gains (Ibs. of feed required per Ib. of gain) to be determined. It has been observed at Rollins Center, that the fastest gaining animals are not always the most efficient feed converters. In many cases, the most rapid gaining animals have just consumed more {Continued On Page 8] B-brand means Brucellosis....All infected animals must be branded on the left jaw. They are then sent immediately to slaughter. This keeps these animals from mixing with other healthy cattle while in the market channels. Bought and Paid For Eradication Efforts Costly, Difficult For Brucellosis "Don't buy Brucellosis." Cattlemen and dairymen who've experienced this disease in their herds know brucellosis is bad news. Their farms are quarantined. This disease, which causes abortions and breeding problems, is costly. Getting rid of it is often a prolonged and difficult job. Research Society Names President S. E. Trieb, head of the Cooperative Extension Service marketing department at the University of Georgia, has been named president of the Food Distribution Research Society, Inc. The Society, organized in 1967, is made up of educators, government researchers, and food industry representatives. Brucellosis is an infectious bacterial disease of cattle and other livestock. It can be transmitted from animals to man as undulant fever so called because of the intermittent fever it produces in human victims. How is Brucellosis Spread? It is commonly transmitted to susceptible animals by direct contact with infected animals. It is also transmitted to susceptible animals in contact with an environment which has been contaminated with discharges from (Continued On Page 8) Number 2 Southern Chickens Eat More Than Swine Population Which consume more feed? Chickens or hogs? According to figures compiled in a study of animal numbers and feed requirements projected to 1985, the South's poultry population will out-eat the hog family by 53 percent to the hog's 16 percent. This margin is based on a projected 53.5 million tons of feed concentrate, equivalent to corn in feeding value. Feed concentrates contain large amounts of energy in relation to bulk. Except for dairy cows, 11 states below the Mason-Dixon Line have experienced faster growth in animal numbers than the rest of the United States. By 1985, says ARS agricultural economist Yvonne Davies at the Russell Research Center, Athens, Ga., the South will have 3.5 billion broilers, 190 million layers, 288 million layer replacements pullets up to 20 weeks old and 70 million turkeys. There will be 20 million hogs, 4 million "fed" cattle, and 2 million dairy cattle. Poultry, still the shopper's alloccasion favorite, will consume the most with 53 percent. Cattle fattened to provide beef ranging from U. S. Choice sirloins to ground chuck will rank second, consuming 26 percent of the South's total feed requirements. Hogs rank third with 16 percent of the feed. Georgia Continues 4s Poultry Leader Georgia continues as the Poultry Capital of the world and poultry as the largest segment of Georgia agriculture. In 1975, the gigantic Georgia poultry industry logged its 20th consecutive year as Georgia's leading agricultural money-maker and the 18th as the nation's leader in poultry income. To keep both crowns in 1975, Georgia poultrymen processed a working day average of some 4,714,497 pounds of chicken, over two million dozen eggs and approximately 60 tons of turkey. According to figures of the Georgia Poultry Market News Service, Georgia's poultry plants processed 408,589,800 broilers in 1975, a 4.3 per cent increase over 1974.
