Distributing
Gas, OilProducts
When I was asked to write a guest column for the Market Bulletin I had thought I would attempt to analyze the reasons farmers are having to pay such high prices for fuel and nitrogen. These products are derived from crude oil and natural gas and for this reason the major oil companies and wholesale distributors are being falsely blamed for the substantial increase in the cost of such items.
Rightfully, the blame should be placed on the U.S. Congress because
its members have steadfastly refused to develop a realistic energy policy for our country, consequently prices for fuel and nitrogen have continued their upward trend over the past two years due to the tremendous increase in imports of high priced crude. However, when I read in the April 21 issue of the Market Bulletin the

statements made by the Executive Director of the Georgia Association of Petroleum Retailers I knew that I must reply to the innuendos he presented in that article.
The article indicated that all service station dealers in this state are being driven out of business by unscrupulous oil distributors and the major oil companies. This is not true as there is now and always will be a place in the distribution system for efficient dealers.
I cannot understand why legislation should be passed in order to give a worthless dealer a perpetual lease on a station since the desirable dealers need no additional protection under the law. Service station dealers have more advantages than any small businessman I know of since they can move into a station which cost the supplier some $150350,000 to build and with an investment of some $1,000, probably borrowed from the supplier, begin a business that could net him $40,000 per year. Good dealers in good locations make that kind of money.
I do not believe that many far-

Although peanuts is Georgia's number two crop [dollar-wise] we lead the nation in peanut production with 1,661,520,000 pounds produced in 1974. 516,000 acres of Georgia farmland is devoted to peanuts concentrated in the southwest and south central part of the state. Farmers tried to grow peanuts as an alternative to cotton but low prices hi the 30's discouraged planting except in the most productive areas. The average per acre yield was 650 pounds up to 1950. With unproved production techniques, a peanut farmer can expect more than 2500 pounds per acre today. In 1974, peanuts produced $302,967,000 in farm income.
Potted Holiday Plants
Provide Outdoor Beauty

During the Easter season many potted plants were received as gifts. Providing the right kind of care will keep these plants looking their best for several weeks. Do not take plants from inside and set in full sun outdoors .^ant foliage can be damaged by bright sunlight after becoming accustomed to reduced light intensities.

Four Youngsters
Represent Georgia
Four young 4-H'ers from Oconee County will represent Georgia at the International Land Judging contest in Oklahoma City on May 5 and 6.
The 4-H'ers, all from Watkinsville, are Andy Griner, Jeff Martin, Jimmy Rice, and Carry White. Winning the state 4-H land judging contest qualified the team for the international competition.
Land judging skill is based on the ability to recognize different types and quality of soil. The young people's knowledge of managing soil for crop production is also considered.

Easter Lily Give lilies considerable light. A southern exposure is preferred. A cool room will keep flowers looking their best longer. Water the plants when the soil begins to become dry to the touch. Plants may be transferred to the border after flowering. They will bloom next year, however, much later in the season.
Hydrangea Careful attention to watering is good advice where hydrangeas are concerned. These plants with both large blooms and leaves transpire considerable moisture to the air. It may be necessary to water daily. Place plants where they receive strong light. After blooms fade, plants can be planted in the yard. Select a

It's chicken cooking time at the Macon State Farmer's Market. The annual state cook-off to determine Georgia's champion and representative to the National Chicken Cooking Contest will be held at the new market facility, May 21st. The hustle-bustle of the market will lend an unique atmosphere to the day's activities.
The five finalists have been selected by the National Broiler Council. They are: Mrs. Anne Bell, Tifton, "Chicken Bread"; Miss Donna Garrett, Roswell, "Sun Shiny Chicken"; Mrs. Mary Ann Miller, Louisville, "Chicken Pansit"; Mrs. Emily Posey, Atlanta, "Posies Planked Chicken" and Ms. Catherine Richardson, Monroe, "Chicken Ratatouille".
Sponsors of the local event are the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Georgia Poultry Federation and the Georgia Poultry Processors. The winner of the state cook-off will go to Philadelphia in July to compete for prizes, including the grand prize of $10,000.
The Georgia winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to the National Cook-Off plus $100 cash. Local donations of cash prizes and gifts are compliment of Atlanta Coca Cola Bottling Company, Atlanta; Atlanta Gas Light, Macon; Atlanta Produce Dealers Association, Forest

Dear Editor: My grandmother always prepared a window
washing mixture which worked really well. I thought your readers would like to know about it too. Mix 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/3 cup ammonia in one gallon water. Spray or wipe on and then rinse. You can use old wadded up newspapers to polish the glass for a real shine.

Stout Rue?

The term shrub rose is

generally applied to old-fashion

and wild roses from all over the

world. They are usually single-

flowered and bloom only once a

year. There are exceptions that

produce full blooms and some

species do have two flowering

seasons. Most produce colorful

fruit in the fall.

The full beauty of shrub roses

can only be enjoyed when they

are allowed to develop naturally

'with little or no pruning. They are

suitable for planting in shrub

borders or in isolated corners of

the yard.

Shrub roses appeal to gardeners

who prefer informal rose gardens

as opposed to the formal hybrid

teas and floribundas. Also, shrub

roses -are more hardy and easier

to grow than their cultured

relations. Ordinary soil, compost,

and full sun will make most shrub

roses happy.

Old fashion shrub roses are

frequently advertised in the

MARKET BULLETIN. To aide our

readers and advertisers in

identification and enjoyment, some

of the most popular varieties will

be featured in this column in

weeks to come.

The average farmer must borrow a large amount of money to operate his business whereas the dealer has a ready-made station, built at no cost to him, and if he doesn't make a profit he simply walks away, leaving the supplier holding the bag.
The farmer can't walk away from his tremendous investment any more so than can the oil distributor or the major oil companies but I am not aware of their pressuring the General Assembly to pass legislation guaranteeing them a profit. No one runs a bigger risk than farmers when they plant their crops every year and compared to the gamble they take, service station dealers run no risk whatsoever.
The leaders of GAPR evidently are not aware of the free enterprise system which has made this country such a great nation, as they castigated the members of the General Assembly for their failure to pass a socialist bill (HB-78) that would have created a monopoly for service station dealers.
The legislation they proposed would have made it mandatory for gasoline, diesel fuel, oils and lubricants to be sold only through service stations. I doubt that many farmers would support legislation
which would require them to buy all their fuel from service stations. It is difficult enough to make a profit from farming now but it would be an impossible task if all the farmers'
fuel had to be purchased retail. The article stated that oil retailers
are caught in a bind, created by the big bad oil companies and unscrupulous distributors, but I say to you in all sincerity, if the legislation proposed by GAPR ever became law it wouldn't be the oil dealers but the consumer, including the farmers, who would be caught in a bind.
Annual Screwworm Precautions Begin
Livestock purchasers face the hazard of possibly "buying trouble" every time they acquire new animals. Some problems, like screwworms, can infest an entire region.
Protective measures are taken to lessen this hazard whenever possible. Federal law prohibits shipping screwworm infested animals across any state line at any time.
Between April 15 and November 30 of each year all animals shipped across the U. S. must be accompanied by a health certificate saying they have been sprayed or dipped, and inspected and been found free of screwworms. The certificate can only be signed by a federally accredited veterinarian, or a state or federal animal health official.
Screwworms are a parasite of all warm blooded animals. Female screwworm flies deposit their eggs on the edges of wounds in warm blooded animals. As eggs hatch the tiny larvae burrow into the wound to feed on live flesh.

Outdoor Beauty

partially shaded location. Cut shoots back to several inches above pot level, leaving at least three nodes (joints). The potbound root system should be loosened. Prepare a good soil mixture for use in backfilling around plants.
Azaleas Strong indirect light is needed for azaleas to lengthen their bloom life. However, don't expose to direct sun. Do not let these plants dry out excessively, as wilting decreases bloom life. After blooming, azaleas may be planted in outdoor beds in a semi-shaded area. Azaleas like soils well fortified with organic matter, such as peat moss. Mulch and water well for the plant to become established. Some florist azaleas are more tender than others; therefore, some many not survive cold weather further inland.
Caladiums These plants are noted for their beautifully colored leaves. They are most often grown in a well drained, highly organic media. Keep these pot plants evenly moist to prevent wilting. When grown as a pot plant, place the plants where they receive lots of indirect light. The plants can be planted outside in 40-60 percent shade. Some varieties can be exposed to early morning sun if protected from midday and late afternoon sun. Plant where drainage is good and fortify soils generously with organic matter. Monthly fertilization (1 teaspoonful per square foot] is recommended.

Big Tree In Ga.
Georgia's largest fringe tree, to date, has been located on the property of Dr. W. C. McGarity of Social Circle. The tree measures 19 inches in circumference; is 33 feet tall; and has a crown spread of 13 feet.
Sometimes known as Old Man's Beard, the tree grows from Pennsylvania to Kentucky and Florida to Arkansas. The fringe tree normally attains a height of 20-30 feet.
Spring comes dancing over the hills,
Touching her wand to the daffodils,
Causing the tulips to lift their bright heads,
Rousing the violets from mossy beds;
Exhorting the birds to burst into song,
And coaxing the apple blossoms along.
Hanging the moon in the sycamore trees,
Serenading the world with sweet melodies,
And each time she comes, there is a rebirth
Of love, hope and faith upon this old earth.
