Future Homemakers
Build Foundation
Future Homemakers of America throughout Georgia will observe National FHA Week, February 9-15 in conjunction with Vocational Education Week. Using the theme VOCATIONAL EDUCATION FOR PRODUCTIVE CAREERS they join some half-a-million other young men and women members across the country in demonstrating projects that have real value for youth in preparation for future responsibilities.
Future Homemakers of America is one of six vocational educa-
tion youth groups. Inter- re la ted
with the home economics education program in the secondary schools, it provides meaning | and motivation | for youth working toward educational goals related to home .economics and vocational education reaching beyond the classroom instruction into the home and community. The overall goal of the organization is to help youth assume their roles in society through home

economics in areas of personal growth, family life, vocational preparation and community involvement.
In other words, it helps us develop leadership, good citizenship, and prepare for the vital work of our country. In our FHA chapter meetings we analyze member concerns and then develop what we call in-depth projects that are related to our home economics classroom studies.
Many people have no idea what is taught in home economics classes today. It isn't just cooking and sewing, it's learning about living, teaching us how to cope with the dual role of homemaker and wage earner in today's fast-paced society.
During this week we want to impress on people the importance of vocational education and of Future Homemakers of America as a part of home economics education in preparing us for future living.
The Georgia Association ranks fourth in membership with a total of 19,496 members. This total mem-

Mountain Center
Preserves Culture
Plans for opening a Mountain Cultural Center in Dahlonega have been announced by the Georgia Mountain Center Committee.
The Georgia Mountain Center will provide a central location for visitors to Southern Appalachia to obtain information on mountain history, crafts and art. Blacksmiths, artists, weavers, spinners, potters, etc. will exhibit and demonstrate their craft.
Artists and craftsmen at the center will be selected on the basis of skill and economic need. Families will be able to learn a craft, make goods and sell them at the one central location in Dahlonega.
The center is accepting applications now for display space. For more information write The Georgia Mountain Center, P.O. Box 734, .Dahlonega 30533.

Rafael Carlo, owner of the R. C. Ranch Rabbit Processing Plant, the only such plant in Georgia, and Dr. George Schuler of the
Food Science Department check the dressed rabbit ready for market.
Beware Hydroponic
Greenhouse Claims
Georgians are warned that some greenhouse companies are advertising misleading claims stating that yearly incomes can be from $7,000 to $13,000 from growing tomatoes and other vegetables in a hydropohic greenhouse. The claims are misleading in that they do not specify net or gross income, nor do they explain consideration made for humidity, fertilizer, electricity or labor. '
Many Georgians have been terribly disappointed in the results. In checking into over 100 operations in the state, only one was found to be showing any profit.
As a result of this many of the unr successful hydroponic houses have been converted into conventional greenhouses raising bedding plants where the grower may be able to recover his investment and make some profit.
One of the main reasons for the problems plaguing hydroponic greenhouse operations is the communicable water supply. Any disease in the water tank can be transmitted to the entire greenhouse crop
Chicken Pie Supper

Also known as all-heal and St. George's herb, valerian was used in medieval days to treat epilepsy and other ailments associated with the heart and brain.
The plant is tall, growing to a height of about four feet. The light green leaves grow in pairs that are divided into smaller pairs of leaflets toward the end of the long straight stem.
Valerian is a perennial and spreads by creeping underground runners. Once established it can easily become invasive. It thrives in good garden soil, sun or partial shade and is propagated by seeds or division of existing plants.
The tiny white, pink or lavendarblue flowers of Valerian are most attractive and frequently used in flower arrangements. They also enhance the borders of herb gardens if not allowed to crowd other plants.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

.Ga.'s Lowest Cotton Acreage

Predicted Since Mid-1800's

According to crop surveys of prospective plantings, Georgia cotton growers
indicate that their plantings in 1975 would be down 57 percent from that planted last year dropping from 423,000 acres to 180,000 acres. If these early predictions are realized, this would be the smallest cotton acreage for the state since records began in the mid-1800's.

Cheap Bargains
Can Cost Money
In Fertilization Undeniably, fertilizer costs have gone up, but the cost of unproven substitutes may be much higher, the Georgia Department of Agriculture warns, especially in lost crop yields. With the presently favorable grain prices, money spent for fertilizer is still a high input, but only if it is spent wisely for fertilizers of proven effectiveness.
Examine any unfamiliar fertilizer product or "fertilizer substitute" carefully. You may or may not benefit from a "soil conditioner" with a small amount of micronutrients, but no such product can substitute for your crop's major needs for the primary nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
Shopping for the least cost nutrient source may also save the farmer money in some cases; however, looking for plant food "bargains" calls for being a wary shopper. You cannot get thirty pounds of plant food from a ten pound gallon of liquid fertilizer. Write the claims down on a piece of paper and take it home to figure it out, or contact the Georgia Department of Agriculture, your local Extension Agent, or Vocational Agriculture teacher before you spend your money.
Current shortages and increases in the price of fertilizer have provided proper cause for farmers to search for ways to reduce the cost of this essential production input. Soil testing, closer attention to actual individual nutrient needs, and in some cases, drawing on plant food reserves that have been built up in the soil over prior years are practical costsaving-practices.
Increased use of legumes to reduce fertilizer nitrogen needs is certainly a worthwhile practice where applicable. Adequate liming is a well proven way to not only promote growth of legumes, but to enhance the effectiveness of both added and residual plant nutrients.
Horse Breeders
A Horse Breeders Short course will be held in Athens February 2122. The two-day event will provide the latest scientific facts and practical recommendations for managing horse breeding operations.
Speakers will include horse breeders and faculty of both the University of Georgia School of Agriculture and School of Veterinary Medicine, with topics ranging from nutrition to artificial insemination.
Details and registration blanks may be obtained from county Extension offices or from Charles A. Hutton, Extension Animal Scientist, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia 30602.

According to crop surveys of prospective plantings, Georgia cotton growers indicate that their plantings in 1975 would be down 57 percent from that planted last year dropping from 423,000 acres to 180,000 acres. If these early predictions are realized, this would be the smallest cotton acreage for the state since records began in the mid1800's.
The crop survey taken the first of January was indicative of the way farmers felt at that time.Whether they will carry through with their plans to plant less cotton remains to be seen. The decision will probably be based on the price of cotton as well as competing commodities at planting time.
"I would hope, and it was a surprise to me to see the acreage estimates so low, that it doesn't get that low. Based on the cotton farmers I know and my information, I think we will lose between 1/5 and 1/3 cotton acreage rather than the 1 /2 indicated," Extension Agronomist Wilbur Seigler commented.
Cotton has been in this position of up and down for many years: good seasons, bad seasons, good markets, bad markets. This has been a bad market year with many problems. The farm economy is usually good or bad, but this year the cotton economy has been hurt where competing crop prices are good.
Most of Georgia's cotton will be planted prior to the last week in April. If at that time there is a 35% production cut in cotton acreage, the yield would drop from over 400,000 bales to between 275,000 and 300,000. The average yield per acre, however, would probably increase since only those farmers with a high yield per acre would be growing cotton.
Recertification
For Fuel Necessary
The State Energy Office cautions that if fuel requirements are going to be higher next year, it will be necessary for the farmers to contact their suppliers and recertify their needs. This recertification is necessary if you have new equipment or if acreage has been added since the original certification.
All of the farmers in the state of Georgia are entitled to an allocation level of 100 percent of current fuel requirements for agricultural production.
If this is the first year for farming operation, you should obtain a supplier. It is suggested that you contact the nearest distributor and certify your needs to him so that you will be sure to receive fuel for this year's operations. If you have difficulty in obtaining an allocation for fuel, please contact the State Energy Office, 7 Hunter St., SW, Room 145, Atlanta 30334, or call 656-5176.
